Based on astrochemical theory, the complex molecular composition around high-mass YSOs should evolve from the outer envelope in toward the central hot region as a sequence of temperature dependent chemical pathways are activated in ices and in the gas-phase. The resulting complex molecules have been broadly classified into three generations dependent on the temperature (<25, >25, and >100 K) required for formation. We combine IRAM 30m and Submillimeter Array observations to explore the spatial distribution of organic molecules around the high-mass young stellar object NGC 7538 IRS9, whose weak complex molecule emission previously escaped detection, quantifying the emission and abundance profiles of key organic molecules as a function of distance from the central protostar. We find that emission from N-bearing organics and saturated O-bearing organics present large increases in emission around 8000 AU and R<3000 AU, while O-bearing molecules and hydrocarbons do not. The increase in flux from some complex molecules in the envelope, around 8000 AU or 25 K, is consistent with recent model predictions of an onset of complex ice chemistry at 20-30 K. The emission increase for some molecules at R<3000 AU suggests the presence of a weak hot core, where thermal ice evaporation and hot gas-phase chemistry drives the chemistry. Complex organics thus form at all radii and temperatures around this protostar, but the composition changes dramatically as the temperature increases, which is used to constrain the chemical generation(s) to which different classes of molecule belong.
We present a comprehensive study of massive young stellar objects (YSOs) in the metal-poor galaxy NGC 6822 using IRAC and MIPS data obtained from the {\em Spitzer Space Telescope}. We find over 500 new YSO candidates in seven massive star-formation regions; these sources were selected using six colour-magnitude cuts. Via spectral energy distribution fitting to the data with YSO radiative transfer models we refine this list, identifying 105 high-confidence and 88 medium-confidence YSO candidates. For these sources we constrain their evolutionary state and estimate their physical properties. The…
We present medium-resolution (R $\sim$ 4000) YJ, H \& K band spectroscopy of candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in NGC~346, the most active star-formation region in the metal-poor (Z = 1/5 Z$_{\sun}$) Small Magellanic Cloud. The spectra were obtained with the KMOS (K-Band Multi Object Spectrograph) integral field instrument on the Very Large Telescope. From our initial sample of 18 candidate high-mass YSOs previously identified from mid-IR photometry and radiative transfer model fits to their spectral energy distributions, approximately half were resolved into multiple components by our in…
Aims. To demonstrate that `INDICATE' is a powerful spatial analysis tool which when combined with kinematic data from Gaia DR2 can be used to robustly probe star formation history. Methods. We compared the dynamic & spatial distributions of young stellar objects (YSOs) at various evolutionary stages in NGC 2264 using Gaia DR2 proper motion data and INDICATE. Results. The dynamic & spatial behaviours of YSOs at different evolutionary stages are distinct. Dynamically, Class II YSOs predominately have non-random trajectories that are consistent with known substructures, whereas Class III YSOs hav…
We present results from high resolution optical spectra toward 66 young stars in the Orion B molecular cloud to study their kinematics and other properties. Observations of the H$α$ and Li I 6707 Å lines are used to check membership and accretion properties. While the stellar radial velocities of in NGC 2068 and L1622 show good agreement with that of the molecular gas, many of the stars in NGC 2024 show a considerable offset. This could be a signature of either expansion of the cluster, high degree of the ejection of the stars from the cluster through the dynamical interaction, or the accelera…
The mass segregation of stellar clusters could be primordial rather than dynamical. Despite the abundance of studies of mass segregation for stellar clusters, those for stellar progenitors are still scarce, so the question on the origin and evolution of mass segregation is still open. Our goal is to characterize the structure of the NGC 2264 molecular cloud and compare the populations of clumps and young stellar objects (YSOs) in this region whose rich YSO population has shown evidence of sequential star formation. We separated the Herschel column density map of NGC 2264 in three subregions an…
Deep optical photometric data on the NGC 7538 region were collected and combined with archival data sets from $Chandra$, 2MASS and {\it Spitzer} surveys in order to generate a new catalog of young stellar objects (YSOs) including those not showing IR excess emission. This new catalog is complete down to 0.8 M$_\odot$. The nature of the YSOs associated with the NGC 7538 region and their spatial distribution are used to study the star formation process and the resultant mass function (MF) in the region. Out of the 419 YSOs, $\sim$91\% have ages between 0.1 to 2.5 Myr and $\sim$86\% have masses b…
JWST observations of NGC 346, a star-forming region in the metal-poor Small Magellanic Cloud, reveal a substantial population of sub-solar mass young stellar objects (YSOs) with IR excess. We detected $\sim$500 YSOs and pre main sequence (PMS) stars from more than 45,000 unique sources utilizing all four NIRCam wide filters with deep, high-resolution imaging, where ongoing low-mass star formation is concentrated along dust filaments. From these observations, we construct detailed near-IR colour-magnitude diagrams with which preliminary categorizations of YSO classes are made. For the youngest,…
Isolated dense molecular cores are investigated to study the onset of complex organic molecule formation in interstellar ice. Sampling three cores with ongoing formation of low-mass stars (B59, B335, and L483) and one starless core (L694-2) we sample lines of sight to nine background stars and five young stellar objects (YSOs; A_K ~0.5 - 4.7). Spectra of these stars from 2-5 $μ$m with NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF) simultaneously display signatures from the cores of H$_2$O (3.0 $μ$m), CH$_3$OH (C-H stretching mode, 3.53 $μ$m) and CO (4.67 $μ$m) ices. The CO ice is traced by nine sta…
We present here the recent results on two distant Galactic H II regions, namely NGC~2282 and Sh2-149, obtained with multiwavelength observations. Our optical spectroscopic analysis of the bright sources have been used to identify the massive members, and to derive the fundamental parameters such as age and distance of these regions. Using IR colour-colour criteria and H$_α$-emission properties, we have identified and classified the candidate young stellar objects (YSOs) in these regions. The $^{12}$CO(1-0) continuum maps along with the {\it K}-band extinction maps, and spatial distribution of …

The spatial properties of small star-clusters suggest that they may originate from a fragmentation cascade of the cloud for which there might be traces up to a few dozen of kAU. Our goal is to investigate the multi-scale spatial structure of gas clumps, to probe the existence of a hierarchical cascade and to evaluate its possible link with star production in terms of multiplicity. From the Herschel emission maps of NGC 2264, clumps are extracted using getsf software at each of their associated spatial resolution, respectively [8.4, 13.5, 18.2, 24.9, 36.3]". Using the spatial distribution of th…
NGC 281 is a complex region of star formation at 2.8 kpc. This complex is situated 300 pc above the Galactic plane, and appears to be part of a 270 pc diameter ring of atomic and molecular clouds expanding at 22 km/s (Megeath et al. 2003). It appears that two modes of triggered star formation are at work here: an initial supernova to trigger the ring complex and the initial O~stars and the subsequent triggering of low mass star formation by photoevaporation driven molecular core compression. To get a complete census of the young stellar population, we use \textbf{observations from} Chandra ACI…

We have conducted an interferometric line survey in the 0.8 mm band toward the young high-mass protostar candidate NGC 2264 CMM3 with ALMA. CMM3 is resolved into the two continuum peaks, CMM3A and CMM3B, at an angular separation of 0.9". Thus, CMM3 is found to be a binary system candidate. We have detected molecular outflows associated with CMM3A and CMM3B each, indicating active star formation. In addition to the two peaks, six faint continuum peaks are detected around CMM3A and CMM3B, most of which are thought to be evolved low-mass protostars. CMM3A is found to be rich in molecular line emi…

We present the results of the Gould's Belt Distances Survey (GOBELINS) of young star forming regions towards the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex. We detected 36 YSOs with the Very Large Baseline Array (VLBA), 27 of which have been observed in at least 3 epochs over the course of 2 years. At least half of these YSOs belong to multiple systems. We obtained parallax and proper motions towards these stars to study the structure and kinematics of the Complex. We measured a distance of 388$\pm$5 pc towards the Orion Nebula Cluster, 428$\pm$10 pc towards the southern portion L1641, 388$\pm$10 pc toward…
Aims: A unique environment to study how interstellar Complex Organic Molecules (iCOMs) can be formed is the shocked gas along low-mass protostellar outflows, as the dust mantles composition is sputtered into the gas phase. The chemical richness in these environments has been so far studied only in the L1157 blue shifted outflow. Methods: To understand if the L1157-B1 case is unique, we imaged the NGC 1333 IRAS 4A outflows using the NOEMA (NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array) interferometer as part of the IRAM SOLIS (Seeds Of Life in Space) Large Program and compared the observations with the GR…
We use NH3 inversion transitions to trace the dense gas in the NGC 1333 region of the Perseus molecular cloud. NH3(1,1) and NH3(2,2) maps covering an area of 102 square arcminutes at an angular resolution of ~3.7" are produced by combining VLA interferometric observations with GBT single dish maps. The combined maps have a spectral resolution of 0.14 km/s and a sensitivity of 4 mJy/beam. We produce integrated intensity maps, peak intensity maps and dispersion maps of NH3(1,1) and NH3(2,2) and a line-of-sight velocity map of NH3(1,1). These are used to derive the optical depth for the NH3(1,1) …
Astrophysical observations show complex organic molecules (COMs) in the gas phase of protoplanetary disks. X-rays emitted from the central young stellar object (YSO) that irradiate interstellar ices in the disk, followed by the ejection of molecules in the gas phase, are a possible route to explain the abundances observed in the cold regions. This process, known as X-ray photodesorption, needs to be quantified for methanol-containing ices. We aim at experimentally measuring X-ray photodesorption yields of methanol and its photo-products from binary mixed ices: $^{13}$CO:CH$_3$OH ice and H$_2$O…
G351.16+0.70 is a relatively well-studied High Mass Star Forming Region with at least two main bipolar outflow structures originating from an OB embedded star and multiple IR cores. Using high-resolution and large bandwidth SMA observations, we studied its molecular content to probe the emission of iCOMs which could be related to the bipolar outflows or their jets. We analyzed the emission spectra in the 1mm band within 8 GHz bandwidth coverage, from 216.75 to 220.75 GHz, and from 228.75 to 232.75 GHz. Employing the LTE approximation using the XCLASS software, we identified 260 emission lines …
We examine the clustering and kinematics of young stellar objects (YSOs) in the North America/Pelican Nebulae, as revealed by Gaia astrometry, in relation to the structure and motions of the molecular gas, as indicated in molecular line maps. The Gaia parallaxes and proper motions allow us to significantly refine previously published lists of YSOs, demonstrating that many of the objects previously thought to form a distributed population turn out to be non-members. The members are subdivided into at least 6 spatio-kinematic groups, each of which is associated with its own molecular cloud compo…
We used the Atacama Large (sub-)Millimeter Array (ALMA) and the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) to image, with an angular resolution of 0.5$''$ (120 au) and 1$''$ (235 au), respectively, the emission from 11 different organic molecules in the protostellar binary NGC1333 IRAS 4A. We clearly disentangled A1 and A2, the two protostellar cores present. For the first time, we were able to derive the column densities and fractional abundances simultaneously for the two objects, allowing us to analyse the chemical differences between them. Molecular emission from organic molecules is conce…
We present the first results of a pilot program to conduct an ALMA Band 10 spectral line survey of the high-mass star-forming region NGC 6334I. The observations were taken in exceptional weather conditions (0.19 mm precipitable water) with typical system temperatures $T_{\rm{sys}}$ $<$950 K at $\sim$890 GHz. A bright, bipolar north-south outflow is seen in HDO and CS emission, driven by the embedded massive protostar MM1B. This has allowed, for the first time, a direct comparison of the thermal water in this outflow to the location of water maser emission from prior 22 GHz VLA observations. Th…
We have analyzed ALMA Cycle 5 data in Band 4 toward three low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs), IRAS 03235+3004 (hereafter IRAS 03235), IRAS 03245+3002 (IRAS 03245), and IRAS 03271+3013 (IRAS 03271), in the Perseus region. The HC$_{3}$N ($J=16-15$; $E_{\rm {up}}/k = 59.4$ K) line has been detected in all of the target sources, while four CH$_{3}$OH lines ($E_{\rm {up}}/k = 15.4-36.3$ K) have been detected only in IRAS 03245. Sizes of the HC$_{3}$N distributions ($\sim 2930-3230$ au) in IRAS 03235 and IRAS 03245 are similar to those of the carbon-chain species in the warm carbon chain chemistr…
We present ALMA band 6/7 (1.3 mm/0.87 mm) and VLA Ka band (9 mm) observations toward NGC 2071 IR, an intermediate-mass star forming region. We characterize the continuum and associated molecular line emission towards the most luminous protostars, i.e., IRS1 and IRS3, on ~100 au (0. 2") scales. IRS1 is partly resolved in millimeter and centimeter continuum, which shows a potential disk. IRS3 has a well resolved disk appearance in millimeter continuum and is further resolved into a close binary system separated by ~40 au at 9 mm. Both sources exhibit clear velocity gradients across their disk ma…
We present a study of narrow filaments toward a massive infrared dark cloud, NGC 6334S, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). Thirteen gas filaments are identified using the H$^{13}$CO$^{+}$ line, while a single continuum filament is revealed by the continuum emission. The filaments present a compact radial distribution with a median filament width of $\sim$0.04 pc narrower than the previously proposed `quasi-universal' 0.1~pc filament width. The higher spatial resolution observations and higher-density gas tracer tend to identify even narrower and lower mass filaments…
We report the results of subparsec-scale submillimeter observations towards an embedded high-mass young stellar object in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) with ALMA. Complementary infrared data obtained with the AKARI satellite and the Gemini South telescope are also presented. The target infrared point source is spatially resolved into two dense molecular cloud cores; one is associated with a high-mass young stellar object (YSO core), while another is not associated with an infrared source (East core). The two cores are dynamically associated but show different chemical characteristics. Emiss…

The increasing sensitivity and resolution of ground-based telescopes have enabled the detection of gas-phase complex organic molecules (COMs) across a variety of environments. Many of the detected species are expected to form on the icy surface of interstellar grains and transfer later into the gas phase. Therefore, icy material is regarded as a primordial source of COMs in the ISM. Upcoming JWST observations of interstellar ices in star-forming regions will reveal IR features of frozen molecules with unprecedented resolution and sensitivity. To identify COM features in the JWST data, lab IR s…
Complex organic molecules have been observed for decades in the interstellar medium. Some of them might be considered as small bricks of the macromolecules at the base of terrestrial life. It is hence particularly important to understand organic chemistry in Solar-like star forming regions. In this article, we present a new observational project: SOLIS (Seeds Of Life In Space). This is a Large Project at the IRAM-NOEMA interferometer, and its scope is to image the emission of several crucial organic molecules in a sample of Solar-like star forming regions in different evolutionary stage and en…
We report the detection of more than 120 emission lines corresponding to 8 complex organic molecules (CH3OH, CH3CH2OH, CH3OCH3, CH3OCHO, CH3COCH3, NH2CHO, CH2DCN, and CH3CH2CN) and 3 isotopologues (CH2DOH, 13CH3CN, and CH3C15N) toward the western component of the Ser-emb 11 binary young stellar object (YSO) using observations with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array at ~1 mm. The complex organic emission was unresolved with a ~0.5" beam (~220 au) in a compact region around the central protostar, and a population diagram analysis revealed excitation temperatures above 100 K for all…
