We present centimeter and millimeter observations of the NGC 2071 star-forming region performed with the VLA and CARMA. We detected counterparts at 3.6 cm and 3 mm for the previously known sources IRS 1, IRS 2, IRS 3, and VLA 1. All these sources show SEDs dominated by free-free thermal emission at cm wavelengths, and thermal dust emission at mm wavelengths, suggesting that all of them are associated with YSOs. IRS 1 shows a complex morphology at 3.6 cm, with changes in the direction of its elongation. We discuss two possible explanations to this morphology: the result of changes in the direction of a jet due to interactions with a dense ambient medium, or that we are actually observing the superposition of two jets arising from two components of a binary system. Higher angular resolution observations at 1.3 cm support the second possibility, since a double source is inferred at this wavelength. IRS 3 shows a clear jet-like morphology at 3.6 cm. Over a time-span of four years, we observed changes in the morphology of this source that we interpret as due to ejection of ionized material in a jet. The emission at 3 mm of IRS 3 is angularly resolved, with a deconvolved size (FWHM) of ~120 AU, and seems to be tracing a dusty circumstellar disk perpendicular to the radio jet. An irradiated accretion disk model around an intermediate-mass YSO can account for the observed SED and spatial intensity profile at 3 mm, supporting this interpretation.
We report the discovery of bent double jets in the elliptical galaxy NGC 1272, a member of the Perseus cluster. The jets have a radius of curvature of ~2 kpc, much smaller than the galaxy half-light radius of ~11 kpc. This bending is likely a result of ram pressure, and indicates that the intracluster gas enters deep within the galaxy and that the interstellar medium of NGC 1272 has been significantly removed. X-ray observations of the surrounding intracluster medium allow us to constrain the pressure within the jet. We find that the standard assumptions of equipartition often used in interpre…
Context: The earliest evolutionary stages of low-mass protostars are characterised by hot and fast jets which remove angular momentum from the circumstellar disk, thus allowing mass accretion onto the central object. However, the launch mechanism is still being debated. Aims: We would like to exploit high-angular (~ 0.8") resolution and high-sensitivity images to investigate the origin of protostellar jets using typical molecular tracers of shocked regions, such as SiO and SO. Methods: We mapped the inner 22" of the NGC1333-IRAS2A protostar in SiO(5-4), SO(65-54), and the continuum emission at…
The discovery of faint FR~I radio jets in the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 5322 is reported here using 144 MHz LOFAR image. The jets have an angular extent of $\sim40$ arcmin or a projected physical extent of $\sim350$ kpc. The faint jets remain well collimated and disappear in the intergalactic medium, without any visible hotspot or radio lobes. The jets detected up to $\sim20$ kpc extent at higher frequencies are relatively bright within the optical extent of the galaxy but become faint abruptly outside, where detection is made only in the LOFAR image. The total radio luminosity of the galax…
The multiplicity properties of massive stars are one of the important outstanding issues in stellar evolution. Quantifying the binary statistics of all evolutionary phases is essential to paint a complete picture of how and when massive stars interact with their companions, and to determine the consequences of these interactions. We investigate the multiplicity of an almost complete census of red supergiant stars (RSGs) in NGC 330, a young massive cluster in the SMC. Using a combination of multi-epoch HARPS and MUSE spectroscopy, we estimate radial velocities and assess the kinematic and multi…
The fate of cooling gas in the centers of galaxy clusters and groups is still not well understood, as is also the case for the complex process of triggering active galactic nucleus (AGN) outbursts in their central dominant galaxies, and the consequent re-heating of the gas by the AGN jets. With the largest known reservoir of cold molecular gas of any group-dominant galaxy and three epochs of AGN activity visible as cavities in its hot gas, NGC 5044 is an ideal system in which to study the cooling/AGN feedback cycle at the group scale. We present VLBA observations of NGC 5044 to ascertain the c…
Owing to the paucity of sub-arcsecond (sub)mm observations required to probe the innermost regions of newly forming protostars, several fundamental questions are still being debated, such as the existence and coevality of close multiple systems. We study the physical and chemical properties of the jets and protostellar sources in the NGC1333-IRAS4A proto-binary system using continuum emission and molecular tracers of shocked gas. We observed NGC1333-IRAS4A in the SiO(6-5), SO(6_5-5_4), and CO(2-1) lines and the continuum emission at 1.3, 1.4, and 3 mm using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferome…
It is well known that massive O-stars are frequently (if not always) found in binary or higher-order multiple systems, but this fact has been less robustly investigated for the lower mass range of the massive stars, represented by the B-type stars. Obtaining the binary fraction and orbital parameter distributions of B-type stars is crucial to understand the impact of multiplicity on the archetypal progenitor of core-collapse supernovae as well as to properly investigate formation channels for gravitational wave progenitors. This work aims to characterise the multiplicity of the B-star populati…
WIYN/Hydra spectra (R $\sim$ 13,500, signal-to-noise pixel$^{-1}$ = 50-1000) of a 400 $\unicode{x212B}$ region around Li 6708 $\unicode{x212B}$ are used to determine radial and rotational velocities for 287 photometrically selected candidate members of the open cluster M48. The sample ranges from turnoff A stars to late-K dwarfs and eight giants. We combine our $V_{\rm{RAD}}$ measurements and power spectrum analysis with parallax and proper motion data from Gaia DR2 to evaluate membership and multiplicity. We classify 152 stars as single cluster members, 11 as binary members, 16 as members of …
High-resolution Very-Long-Baseline Interferometry observations of NGC 1052 show a two sided jet with several regions of enhanced emission and a clear emission gap between the two jets. This gap shrinks with increasing frequency and vanishes around $ν\sim43$ GHz. The observed structures are due to both the macroscopic fluid dynamics interacting with the surrounding ambient medium including an obscuring torus and the radiation microphysics. In this paper we investigate the possible physical conditions in relativistic jets of NGC 1052 by directly modelling the observed emission and spectra via sta…
Outflows accelerated by AGN are commonly observed in the form of coherent, mildly collimated high-velocity gas directed along the AGN ionisation cones and kinetically powerful (>$10^{44-45}$ erg/s) jets. Recent works found that outflows can also be accelerated by low-power (<$10^{44}$ erg/s) jets, and the most recent cosmological simulations indicate that these are the dominant source of feedback on sub-kpc scales. We study the relation between radio jets and the distribution and kinematics of the ionised gas in IC 5063, NGC 5643, NGC 1068, and NGC 1386 as part of our MAGNUM survey of nearby S…
The radio galaxy NGC 1052 casts absorption features of sulfur-bearing molecules, H$_2$S, SO, SO$_2$, and CS toward the radio continuum emission from the core and jets. Using ALMA, we have measured the equivalent widths of SO absorption features in multiple transitions and determined the temperatures of $344 \pm 43$ K and $26 \pm 4$ K in sub-millimeter and millimeter wavelengths, respectively. Since sub-mm and mm continuum represents the core and jets, the high and low temperatures of the absorbers imply warm environment in the molecular torus and cooler downstream flows. The high temperature i…
The nuclear radio emission of low-luminosity active galactic nuclei (LLAGN) is often associated with unresolved cores. In this paper we show that most LLAGN present extended jet radio emission when observed with sufficient angular resolution and sensitivity. They are thus able to power, at least, parsec-scale radio jets. To increase the detection rate of jets in LLAGN, we analyze subarcsecond resolution data of three low-ionization nuclear emission regions. This yields the detection of extended jet-like radio structures in NGC\,1097 and NGC\,2911 and the first resolved parsec-scale jet of NGC\…
Star-formation feedback onto the parent cloud is conventionally examined through the study of molecular outflows. Little is however known on the effect that atomic ejecta, tracing fast shocks, can have on the global cloud properties. In this study we employ Herschel/PACS [OI] and [CII] spectral line maps of the NGC 1333 star-forming region to assess the relative influence of atomic jets onto the star-formation process. Atomic line maps are compared against molecular outflow tracers and atomic ejecta are associated to individual driving sources. We study the detailed morphology and velocity dis…
We aim to determine the properties of the central region of NGC 1052 using X-ray and radio data. NGC 1052 (z=0.005) has been investigated for decades in different energy bands and shows radio lobes and a low luminosity active galactic nucleus (LLAGN). We use X-ray images from Chandra and radio images from Very Large Array (VLA) to explore the morphology of the central area. We also study the spectra of the nucleus and the surrounding region using observations from Chandra and XMM-Newton. We find diffuse soft X-ray radiation and hotspots along the radio lobes. The spectrum of the circum-nuclear…
We have analysed a new high-resolution e-MERLIN 1.5 GHz radio continuum map together with $HST$ and SDSS imaging of NGC 5322, an elliptical galaxy hosting radio jets, aiming to understand the galaxy's central structure and its connection to the nuclear activity. We decomposed the composite $HST$ + SDSS surface brightness profile of the galaxy into an inner stellar disc, a spheroid, and an outer stellar halo. Past works showed that this embedded disc counter-rotates rapidly with respect to the spheroid. The $HST$ images reveal an edge-on nuclear dust disc across the centre, aligned along the ma…
We present high-sensitivity eMERLIN radio images of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4151 at 1.5 GHz. We compare the new eMERLIN images to those from archival MERLIN observations in 1993 to determine the change in jet morphology in the 22 years between observations. We report an increase by almost a factor of 2 in the peak flux density of the central core component, C4, thought to host the black hole, but a probable decrease in some other components, possibly due to adiabatic expansion. The core flux increase indicates an AGN which is currently active and feeding the jet. We detect no significant motion…
We present the discovery of highly-collimated radio jets spanning a total of 355 kpc around the nearby elliptical galaxy NGC 2663, and the possible first detection of recollimation on kiloparsec scales. The small distance to the galaxy (~28.5 Mpc) allows us to resolve portions of the jets to examine their structure. We combine multiwavelength data: radio observations by the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA), the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and X-ray data from Chandra, Swift and SRG/eROSITA. We present intensity, rotation …
Observations of massive stars in young open clusters (< ~8 Myr) have shown that a majority of them are in binary systems, most of which will interact during their life. Populations of massive stars older than ~20 Myr allow us to probe the outcome of such interactions after many systems have experienced mass and angular momentum transfer. Using multi-epoch integral-field spectroscopy, we investigate the multiplicity properties of the massive-star population in NGC 330 (~40 Myr) in the Small Magellanic Cloud to search for imprints of stellar evolution on the multiplicity properties. From six epo…
Context: High-mass stars have a high degree of multiplicity and most likely form via disk accretion processes. The detailed physics of the binary and disk formation are still poorly constrained. Methods: Using the VLA in its most extended configuration at ~24GHz toward the prototypical high-mass star-forming region NGC7538IRS1 has allowed us to study the NH3 and thermal CH3OH emission and absorption as well as the cm continuum emission at an unprecedented spatial resolution of 0.06"x0.05", corresponding to a linear resolution of ~150AU at a distance of 2.7kpc. Results: A comparison of these ne…
We report the detection of a new feature at the centre of NGC 1275 in the Perseus cluster, hosting the radio source 3C 84. This feature emerges ~ 2 mas (~ 0.8 pc) north of the central core in recent 15 and 43 GHz VLBA images, and seems to be the counterjet to a known radio jet expanding to the south of the core. Apparently, the two jets were born through an outburst around 2005. From the ratio of the apparent lengths of the two jets from the core, we found that the jet angle to the line of sight is θ=65^\circ\pm 16^\circ, which is not much different from the angle of the outer jets generated b…
We investigated the jet width profile with distance along the jet in the nearby radio galaxy NGC 1052 at radial distances between $\sim300$ to $4 \times 10^7$ Schwarzschild Radii($R_{\rm S}$) from the central engine on both their approaching and receding jet sides. The width of jets was measured in images obtained with the VLBI Space Observatory Programme (VSOP), the Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), and the Very Large Array (VLA). The jet-width profile of receding jets are apparently consistent with that of approaching jets throughout the measuring distance ranges, indicating symmetry at least…
We present VLA and ALMA imaging of the deeply-embedded protostellar cluster NGC6334I from 5 cm to 1.3 mm at angular resolutions as fine as 0.17 (220 AU). The dominant hot core MM1 is resolved into seven components at 1.3 mm, clustered within a radius of 1000 AU. Four of the components have brightness temperatures >200 K, radii ~300 AU, minimum luminosities ~10000 Lsun, and must be centrally heated. We term this new phenomenon a "hot multi-core". Two of these objects also exhibit compact free-free emission at longer wavelengths, consistent with a hypercompact HII region (MM1B) and a jet (MM1D).…
Context: Few Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) reveal a double sided jet system. However, these are crucial to understand basic physical properties of extragalactic jets. Aims: We address the questions whether jets in AGN are symmetric in nature, how well they are collimated on small scales, and how do they evolve with time. Methods: We monitored the sub-parsec scale morphology of NGC1052 with the VLBA at 43GHz from 2005 to 2009. Results: A detailed study of 29 epochs show an asymmetry between both jets. A kinematic analysis of the outflows reveals higher apparent velocities for the eastern jet as …
We present a detailed analysis of the protostellar outflow activity in the massive star-forming region NGC 3324, as revealed by new Early Release Observations (ERO) from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). Emission from numerous outflows is revealed in narrow-band images of hydrogen Paschen-$α$ (Pa-$α$) and molecular hydrogen. In particular, we report the discovery of 24 previously unknown outflows based on their H$_2$ emission. We find three candidate driving sources for these H$_2$ flows in published catalogs of young stellar objects (YSOs) and we identify 15 IR point sources in the new J…
We report the discovery of optical and X-ray synchrotron emission from the brighter radio jet in galaxy NGC 7385 using data from HST and Chandra. The jet has a projected length of 5 kpc and a similar morphology to other known optical jets in low-power radio galaxies. We also report a strong jet-cloud interaction which appears to be deflecting the counter-jet and causing a reversal in its direction.
We studied the nearby, interacting galaxy NGC 5195 (M51b) in the radio, optical and X-ray bands. We mapped the extended, low-surface-brightness features of its radio-continuum emission; determined the energy content of its complex structure of shock-ionized gas; constrained the current activity level of its supermassive nuclear black hole. In particular, we combined data from the European Very Long Baseline Interferometry Network (~1-pc scale), from our new e-MERLIN observations (~10-pc scale), and from the Very Large Array (~100-1000-pc scale), to obtain a global picture of energy injection i…
