We present results of our Power Spectral Density (PSD) analysis of 30 AGN using the 58 month light curves from Swift's Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) in the 14-150 keV band. PSDs were fit using a Monte Carlo based algorithm to take into account windowing effects and measurement error. All but one source were found to be fit very well using an unbroken power law with a slope of ~-1, consistent at low frequencies with previous studies in the 2-10 keV band, with no evidence of a break in the PSD. For 5 of the highest S/N sources we tested the energy dependence of the PSD and found no significant difference in the PSD at different energies. Unlike previous studies of X-ray variability in AGN, we do not find any significant correlations between the hard X-ray variability and different properties of the AGN including luminosity and black hole mass. The lack of break frequencies and correlations seem to indicate that AGN are similar to the high state of Galactic Black Holes.
Detectability of low energy X-ray spectral components in type 1 AGN
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has detected high-energy astrophysical neutrinos in the TeV-PeV range. These neutrinos have an isotropic distribution on the sky, and therefore, likely originate from extragalactic sources. Active Galactic Nuclei form a class of astronomical objects which are promising neutrino source candidates given their high electromagnetic luminosity and potential ability to accelerate cosmic rays up to energies greater than 10$^{16}$ eV. Interactions of these cosmic rays within the AGN environment are expected to produce both neutrinos and pionic gamma rays. Some hadronic…
The scaling relations between the black hole (BH) mass and soft lag properties for both active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and BH X-ray binaries (BHXRBs) suggest the same underlying physical mechanism at work in accreting BH systems spanning a broad range of mass. However, the low-mass end of AGNs has never been explored in detail. In this work, we extend the existing scaling relations to lower-mass AGNs, which serve as anchors between the normal-mass AGNs and BHXRBs. For this purpose, we construct a sample of low-mass AGNs ($M_{\rm BH}<3\times 10^{6} M_{\rm \odot}$) from the XMM-Newton archive and…

In order to investigate the role of absorption in AGN with jets, we have studied the column density distribution of a hard X-ray selected sample of radio galaxies, derived from the INTEGRAL/IBIS and Swift/BAT AGN catalogues (~7-10% of the total AGN population). The 64 radio galaxies have a typical FRII radio morphology and are characterized by high 20-100 keV luminosities (from 10^42 to 10^46 erg/s) and high Eddington ratios (Log L_{Bol}/L_{Edd} typically larger than ~0.01). The observed fraction of absorbed AGN (N_{H} > 10^{22} cm^{-2}) is around 40% among the total sample, and ~75% among typ…
We investigate the intrinsic spectral energy distribution (SED) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at infrared (IR) bands with 42 $z < 0.5$ optically luminous Palomar Green survey quasars through SED decomposition. We decompose the SEDs of the 42 quasars by combining an AGN IR template library Siebenmorgen2015 that covers a wide range of the AGN parameter space with three commonly used galaxy template libraries. We determine the median AGN SED from the best-fitting results. The far-IR (FIR) contribution of our median AGN SED is significantly smaller than that of Symeonidis et al. 2016, but rough…
Context: After the successful launch of the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission in July 2019, eROSITA, the soft X-ray instrument aboard SRG, performed scanning observations of a large contiguous field, namely the eROSITA Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS), ahead of the planned four-year all-sky survey. eFEDS yielded a large sample of X-ray sources with very rich multi-band photometric and spectroscopic coverage. Aims: We present here the eFEDS Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) catalog and the eROSITA X-ray spectral properties of the eFEDS sources. Methods: Using a Bayesian method, we perform a…
This White Paper explores advances in the study of Active Galaxies which will be enabled by new observing capabilities at MeV energies (hard X-rays to gamma-rays; 0.1-1000 MeV), with a focus on multi-wavelength synergies. This spectral window, covering four decades in energy, is one of the last frontiers for which we lack sensitive observations. Only the COMPTEL mission, which flew in the 1990s, has significantly probed this energy range, detecting a handful of AGN. In comparison, the currently active Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, observing at the adjacent range of 0.1-100 GeV, is 100-1000 …
Physical models of X-ray binary outbursts can aid in understanding the origin of 'changing-look' active galactic nuclei (AGN), if we can establish that these two black hole accretion phenomena are analogous. Previously, studies of the correlation between the UV-to-X-ray spectral index alpha_OX and Eddington ratio using single-epoch observations of changing-look AGN samples have revealed possible similarities to the spectral evolution of outbursting X-ray binaries. However, direct comparisons using multi-epoch UV/X-ray light curves of individual changing-look AGN undergoing dramatic changes in …
The physics behind the dramatic and unpredictable X-ray variability of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) has eluded astronomers since it was discovered. We present an analysis of Swift XRT observations of 44 AGN with at least 20 Swift observations. We define HR-slope as the change of Hardness Ratio (HR) with luminosity ($L$). This slope is measured for all objects in order to: 1. Classify different AGN according to their HR-HR-slope relation and 2. compare HR-$L/L_\mathrm{Edd}$ trends with those observed in X-ray binaries for the 27 AGN with well measured black hole masses. We compare results using…
We have performed a very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) survey of local (z < 0.05) ultra hard X-ray (14-195 keV) selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) from the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) using KVN, KaVA, and VLBA. We first executed fringe surveys of 142 BAT-detected AGN at 15 or 22 GHz. Based on the fringe surveys and archival data, we find 10/279 nearby AGN (~4%) VLBI have 22 GHz flux above 30 mJy. This implies that the X-ray AGN with a bright nuclear jet are not common. Among these 10 radio-bright AGN, we obtained 22 GHz VLBI imaging data of our own for four targets and reprocess…
The physical parameters of galaxies and/or AGNs can be derived by fitting their multi-band spectral energy distributions (SEDs). By using CIGALE code, we perform multi-band SED fitting (from ultraviolet to infrared) for 791 X-ray sources (518 AGNs and 273 normal galaxies) in the 7 Ms Chandra Deep Field-south survey (CDFS). We consider the contributions from AGNs and adopt more accurate redshifts than published before. Therefore, more accurate star formation rates (SFRs) and stellar masses (M$_*$) are derived. We classify the 518 AGNs into type-I and type-II based on their optical spectra and t…
We present the spatial analysis of five Compton thick (CT) active galactic nuclei (AGNs), including MKN 573, NGC 1386, NGC 3393, NGC 5643, and NGC 7212, for which high resolution Chandra observations are available. For each source, we find hard X-ray emission (>3 keV) extending to ~kpc scales along the ionization cone, and for some sources, in the cross-cone region. This collection represents the first, high-signal sample of CT AGN with extended hard X-ray emission for which we can begin to build a more complete picture of this new population of AGN. We investigate the energy dependence of the…
We present X-ray spectral analysis of XMM and Chandra observations in the 31.3 deg$^2$ Stripe-82X (S82X) field. Of the 6181 X-ray sources in this field, we analyze a sample of 2937 active galactic nuclei (AGN) with solid redshifts and sufficient counts determined by simulations. Our results show a population with median values of spectral index $Γ=1.94_{-0.39}^{+0.31}$, column density log$\,N_{\mathrm{H}}/\mathrm{cm}^{-2}=20.7_{-0.5}^{+1.2}$ and intrinsic, de-absorbed, 2-10 keV luminosity log$\,L_{\mathrm{X}}/\mathrm{erg\,s}^{-1}=44.0_{-1.0}^{+0.7}$, in the redshift range 0-4. We derive the in…
This work presents the catalogue of optical spectral properties for all X-ray selected SPIDERS active galactic nuclei (AGN) up to SDSS DR14. SPIDERS (SPectroscopic IDentification of eROSITA Sources) is an SDSS-IV programme that is currently conducting optical spectroscopy of the counterparts to the X-ray selected sources detected in the ROSAT all-sky survey and the XMM-Newton slew survey in the footprint of the Extended Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (eBOSS). The SPIDERS DR14 sample is the largest sample of X-ray selected AGN with optical spectroscopic follow-up to date. The catalogue…
We present the host galaxy molecular gas properties of a sample of 213 nearby (0.01<z< 0.05) hard X-ray selected AGN galaxies, drawn from the 70-month catalog of Swift-BAT, with 200 new CO(2-1) line measurements obtained with the JCMT and APEX telescopes. We find that AGN in massive galaxies tend to have more molecular gas, and higher gas fractions, than inactive galaxies matched in stellar mass. When matched in star formation, we find AGN galaxies show no difference from inactive galaxies with no evidence of AGN feedback affecting the molecular gas. The higher molecular gas content is related…
We constrain X-ray spectral shapes for the ensemble of AGN based on the shape of the Cosmic X-ray Background (CXB). Specifically, we rule out regions of X-ray spectral parameter space that do not reproduce the CXB in the energy range 1-100 keV. The key X-ray spectral parameters are the photon index, Γ; the cutoff energy, Ecutoff; and the reflection scaling factor, R. Assuming each parameter follows a Gaussian distribution, we first explore the parameter space using a Bayesian approach and a fixed X-ray luminosity function (XLF). For σ_E = 36 keV and σ_R = 0.14, fixed at the observed values fro…
We present results of recurrence analysis of 46 active galactic nuclei (AGN) using light curves from the 157-month catalog of the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) in the 14-150 keV band. We generate recurrence plots and compute recurrence plot metrics for each object. We use the surrogate data method to compare all derived recurrence-based quantities to three sets of stochastic light curves with identical power spectrum, flux distribution, or both, in order to determine the presence of determinism, non-linearity, entropy, and non-stationarity. We compare these quantities with known physical c…
The discovery over the last several decades of moderate luminosity AGNs in disk-dominated galaxies - which show no "classical" bulges - suggests that secular mechanisms represent an important growth pathway for supermassive black holes in these systems. We present new follow-up NuSTAR observations of the optically-elusive AGNs in two bulgeless galaxies, NGC 4178 and J0851+3926. NGC 4178 was originally reported as hosting an AGN based on the detection of [Ne V] mid-infrared emission detected by Spitzer, and based on Chandra X-ray imaging it has since been argued to host either a heavily obscure…
Enhanced emission from the dense gas tracer HCN (relative to HCO$^+ $) has been proposed as a signature of active galactic nuclei (AGN). In a previous single-dish millimeter line survey we identified galaxies with HCN/HCO$ ^+ $ (1-0) intensity ratios consistent with those of many AGN but whose mid-infrared spectral diagnostics are consistent with little to no ( $\lesssim15\% $) contribution of an AGN to the bolometric luminosity. To search for putative heavily obscured AGN, we present and analyze \nustar hard X-ray (3-79 keV) observations of four such galaxies from the Great Observatories All-…
We present a new Bayesian method for reconstructing the parent distributions of X-ray spectral parameters of active galactic nuclei (AGN) in large surveys. The method uses the probability distribution function (PDF) of posteriors obtained by fitting a consistent physical model to each object with a Bayesian method. The PDFs are often broadly distributed and may present systematic biases, such that naive point estimators or even some standard parametric modeling are not sufficient to reconstruct the parent population without obvious bias. Our method uses a transfer function computed from a larg…
Water megamaser emission at 22 GHz has proven to be a powerful tool for astrophysical studies of AGN allowing an accurate determination of the central black hole mass and of the accretion disc geometry and dynamics. However, after searches among thousands of galaxies, only ~ 200 of them have shown such spectroscopic features, most of them of uncertain classification. In addition, the physical and geometrical conditions under which maser activates are still unknown. In this work we aim at characterizing the occurrence of water maser emission in an unbiased sample of AGN, investigating the relat…
