We investigate the intrinsic spectral energy distribution (SED) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at infrared (IR) bands with 42 $z < 0.5$ optically luminous Palomar Green survey quasars through SED decomposition. We decompose the SEDs of the 42 quasars by combining an AGN IR template library Siebenmorgen2015 that covers a wide range of the AGN parameter space with three commonly used galaxy template libraries. We determine the median AGN SED from the best-fitting results. The far-IR (FIR) contribution of our median AGN SED is significantly smaller than that of Symeonidis et al. 2016, but roughly consistent with that of Lyu et al. 2017. The AGN IR SED becomes cooler with increasing bolometric luminosity, which might be due to that more luminous AGNs might have stronger radiative feedback to change torus structures and/or their tori might have higher metallicities. Our conclusions do not depend on the choice of galaxy template libraries. However, since the predicted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) emission line flux is galaxy template-dependent, cautions should be taken on deriving galaxy FIR contribution from PAH fluxes.
We restudy the issue of cross-correlations between broad-line and jet emission variations, and aim to locate the position of radio (and gamma-ray) emitting region in jet of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Considering the radial profiles of the radius and number density of clouds in a spherical broad-line region (BLR), we derive new formulae connecting jet emitting position $R_{\rm{jet}}$ to time lag $τ_{\rm{ob}}$ between broad-line and jet emission variations, and BLR radius. Also, formulae are derived for a disk-like BLR and a spherical shell BLR. The model-independent FR/RSS method is used to…
Active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback, driven by radiation pressure on dust, is an important mechanism for efficiently coupling the accreting black hole to the surrounding environment. Recent observations confirm that X-ray selected AGN samples respect the effective Eddington limit for dusty gas in the plane defined by the observed column density versus the Eddington ratio, the so-called $N_{\rm H} - λ$ plane. A `forbidden' region occurs in this plane, where obscuring clouds cannot be long-lived, due to the action of radiation pressure on dust. Here we compute the effective Eddington limit by…
Radio AGN feedback in X-ray cool cores has been proposed as a crucial ingredient in the evolution of baryonic structures. However, it has long been known that strong radio AGNs also exist in "noncool core" clusters, which brings up the question whether an X-ray cool core is always required for radio feedback. We present a systematic analysis of 152 groups and clusters to show that every BCG with a strong radio AGN has an X-ray cool core. Those strong radio AGNs in the center of the "noncool core" systems identified before are in fact associated with small X-ray cool cores with typical radii of…
Discrepancies between reported structure function (SF) slopes and their overall flatness as compared to expectations from the damped random walk (DRW) model, which generally well describes the variability of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), have triggered us to study this problem in detail. We review common AGN variability observables and identify their most common problems. Equipped with this knowledge, we study ~9000 r-band AGN light curves from Stripe 82 of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, using SFs described by stochastic processes with the power exponential covariance matrix of the signal. We …
We use deep Herschel observations of the complete 2Jy sample of powerful radio AGNs in the local universe (0.05 < z < 0.7) to probe their cool interstellar medium (ISM) contents and star-forming properties, comparing them against other samples of nearby luminous AGNs and quiescent galaxies. This allows us to investigate triggering and feedback mechanisms. We find that the dust masses of the strong-line radio galaxies (SLRGs) in our sample are similar to those of radio-quiet quasars, and that their median dust mass (Mdust = 2 x 10^7 Msun) is enhanced by a factor ~200 compared to that of non-AGN…
This review describes recent developments related to the unified model of active galactic nuclei (AGN). It focuses on new ideas about the origin and properties of the central obscurer (torus), and the connection with its surrounding. The review does not address radio unification. AGN tori must be clumpy but the uncertainties about their properties are still large. Todays most promising models involve disk winds of various types and hydrodynamical simulations that link the large scale galactic disk to the inner accretion flow. IR studies greatly improved the understanding of the spectral energy…
The Faint Object Camera (FOC) aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observed 26 individual active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in ultraviolet imaging polarimetry between 1990 and 2002. Tremendous progresses have been made thanks to those high spatial resolution, high signal-to-noise ratio observations, such as the identification of the location of hidden active nuclei and the three dimensional arrangement of polar material within the first hundred of parsecs around the central core. However, not all AGN observations have been reduced and analyzed, and none in a standardized framework. In this lect…
We present a reanalysis of the cumulative ACIS S Chandra data set pointed at the double AGNs of the NGC 6240 merging galaxy, focusing on the hard energy bands containing the hard spectral continuum (5.5-5.9 keV), the redshifted Fe I K alpha line (6.0-6.4 keV), and the redshifted Fe XXV line (6.4-6.7 keV). We have used to the full the Chandra telescope angular resolution, and we have modeled the Chandra PSF by comparing pre-flight calibration model to the data for the two bright AGNs. With two complementary approaches: (1) studying the residuals after PSF subtraction, and (2) producing reconstr…
We performed a detailed study of the extended cool gas, traced by MgII absorption [$W_r(2796)\geq0.3$~Å], surrounding 14 narrow-line active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at 0.12<z<0.22 using background quasar sight-lines. The background quasars probe the AGNs at projected distances of $60\leq D\leq265$~kpc. We find that, between $100\leq D\leq200$~kpc, AGNs appear to have lower MgII gas covering fractions (0.09$^{+0.18}_{-0.08}$) than quasars (0.47$^{+0.16}_{-0.15}$) and possibly lower than in active field galaxies (0.25$^{+0.11}_{-0.09}$). We do not find a statistically significant azimuthal angle d…
We present a study of 107 galaxies, groups, and clusters spanning ~3 orders of magnitude in mass, ~5 orders of magnitude in central galaxy star formation rate (SFR), ~4 orders of magnitude in the classical cooling rate (dM/dt) of the intracluster medium (ICM), and ~5 orders of magnitude in the central black hole accretion rate. For each system in this sample, we measure dM/dt using archival Chandra X-ray data and acquire the SFR and systematic uncertainty in the SFR by combining over 330 estimates from dozens of literature sources. With these data, we estimate the efficiency with which the ICM…
We examine the robustness of the color-color selection of quiescent galaxies (QGs) against contamination of dusty star-forming galaxies using the latest submillimeter data. We selected 18,304 QG candidates out to $z\sim$ 3 using the commonly adopted $NUV-r-J$ selection based on the high-quality multi-wavelength COSMOS2015 catalog. Using extremely deep 450 and 850 $μ$m catalogs from the latest JCMT SCUBA-2 Large Programs, S2COSMOS, and STUDIES, as well as ALMA submillimeter, VLA 3 GHz, and $Spitzer$ MIPS 24 $μ$m catalogs, we identified luminous dusty star-forming galaxies among the QG candidate…
Metallicity of Active Galactic Nuclei from ultraviolet and optical emission lines-II. Revisiting the $C43$ metallicity calibration and its implications
The importance of some atom hydrogen collisions in AGN has been investigated. The results are useful for better estimate of the hydrogen Balmer lines uxes, which usage for effective temperature diagnostics in astrophysical plasma is limited by errors from the line formation models. The data could be also useful for modeling cooler and denser parts of AGN BLR clouds, as well as for the investigation of Rydberg states of hydrogen and for the study of their in uence during the cosmological recombination epoch. The results of the present work suggest that the investigated processes are of interest…
Recent observations show that the space density of luminous active galactic nuclei (AGNs) peaks at higher redshifts than that of faint AGNs. This downsizing trend in the AGN evolution seems to be contradictory to the hierarchical structure formation scenario. In this study, we present the AGN space density evolution predicted by a semi-analytic model of galaxy and AGN formation based on the hierarchical structure formation scenario. We demonstrate that our model can reproduce the downsizing trend of the AGN space density evolution. The reason for the downsizing trend in our model is a combinat…
Recent cosmological simulations have shown that turbulence should be generally prevailing in clusters because clusters are continuously growing through matter accretion. Using one-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations, we study the heating of cool-core clusters by the ubiquitous turbulence as well as feedback from the central active galactic nuclei (AGNs) for a wide range of cluster and turbulence parameters, focusing on the global stability of the core. We find that the AGN shows intermittent activities in the presence of moderate turbulence similar to the one observed with Hitomi. The cluster…

Cool outflows are now commonly observed in galaxies, but their physical origin and driving mechanism remain unclear. Active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback can potentially accelerate cool galactic outflows via cosmic rays (CR) and radiation pressure on dust. Here we investigate the relative importance of CR and radiation feedback in AGNs, and we analyse the physical conditions for outflow launching as a function of the black hole accretion flow mode. We assume CRs from AGN jet origin and consider the analogy with Galactic X-ray binaries, whereby the jet is prominent at low accretion rates (har…
The FeII/MgII line flux ratio has been used as an indicator of the Fe/Mg abundance ratio in the broad line region (BLR) of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). On the basis of archival rest-frame UV spectra obtained via the Hubble Space Telescope and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, we investigate the FeII/MgII ratios of type 1 AGNs at z < 2. Over wide dynamic ranges of AGN properties (i.e., black hole mass, AGN luminosity, and Eddington ratio), we confirm that the FeII/MgII ratio strongly correlates with Eddington ratio but not with black hole mass, AGN luminosity, or redshift. Our results suggest tha…
We study the heating of the cool cores in galaxy clusters by cosmic-rays (CRs) accelerated by the central active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We especially focus on the stability of the heating. The CRs stream with Alfvén waves in the intracluster medium (ICM) and heat the ICM. First, assuming that the heating and radiative cooling is balanced, we search steady state solutions for the ICM and CR profiles of clusters by solving a boundary value problem. The boundary conditions are set so that the solutions are consistent with observations of clusters. We find steady state solutions if the magnetic f…

Images and spectra recorded with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on Gemini South are used to investigate the stellar content of the open cluster Haffner 16. The (i', g'-i') color-magnitude diagram (CMD) constructed from these data samples the cluster main sequence (MS) and 5 magnitudes of the pre-MS (PMS). The isochrones do not track the PMS on the CMD, in the sense that the PMS has a shallower slope on the CMD than predicted by the models. Still, a dip in star counts that is associated with the relaxation of PMS stars onto the MS is identified near i' = 17. The depth and brightness of th…
The non-gravitational energy feedback is of crucial importance in modeling/simulating clusters to be used as cosmological probes. AGNs are, arguably, of primary importance in injecting energy in the cluster cores. We make the first estimate of non-gravitational energy {\it profiles} in galaxy cluster cores (and beyond) from observational data. Comparing the observed entropy profiles within $r_{500}$, from the Representative {\it XMM-Newton} Cluster Structure Survey (REXCESS), to simulated entropy profiles from both AMR and SPH non-radiative simulations, we estimate the amount of non-gravitatio…
The morphology of quiescent galaxies has been found to be correlated with the activity of their central super massive black hole. In this work, we use data from the first data release of the LOFAR Two$-$Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS DR1) and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 7 (SDSS DR7) to select more than 15 000 quiescent galaxies at $z<0.3$ to investigate the connection between radio-loud active galactic nuclei (RLAGNs) and the morphology of their host galaxy. Taking advantage of the depth of LoTSS, we find that the fraction of RLAGNs with $L_{\rm 150\,MHz}>10^{21}\rm\,W\,Hz^{-1}$ at fixe…

AGN jets carry more than sufficient energy to stave off catastrophic cooling of the intracluster medium (ICM) in the cores of cool-core clusters. However, in order to prevent catastrophic cooling, the ICM must be heated in a near-isotropic fashion and narrow bipolar jets with $P_{\rm jet}=10^{44-45}$ ergs/s, typical of radio AGNs at cluster centres, are inefficient at heating the gas in the transverse direction to the jets. We argue that due to existent conditions in cluster cores, the SMBHs will, in addition to accreting gas via radiatively inefficient flows, experience short stochastic episo…

Spatially-resolved velocity maps at high resolutions of 1-10 pc are becoming available for many nearby AGNs in both optical/infrared atomic emission lines and sub-mm molecular lines. For the former, it has been known that a linear relationship appears to exist between the velocity of the ionized gas clouds and the distance from the nucleus in the inner ~100 pc region, where these clouds are outflowing. Here we demonstrate that, in such a case, we can actually derive the three-dimensional (3D) geometrical distribution of the clouds directly from the velocity map. Revisiting such a velocity map …
