We consider the reduced Allen-Cahn action functional, which appears as the sharp interface limit of the Allen-Cahn action functional and can be understood as a formal action functional for a stochastically perturbed mean curvature flow. For suitable evolutions of generalized hypersurfaces this functional consists of the sum of the squares of the mean curvature and of the velocity vector, integrated over time and space. For given initial and final conditions we investigate the corresponding action minimization problem. We give a generalized formulation and prove compactness and lower semicontinuity properties of the action functional. Furthermore we characterize the Euler-Lagrange equation for smooth stationary points and investigate conserved quantities. Finally we present an explicit example and consider concentric spheres as initial and final data and characterize in dependence of the given time span the properties of the minimal rotationally symmetric connection.
Prescribing, by conformal transformation, the kth-elementary symmetric polynomial of the Schouten tensor $P$ to be constant is a generalisation of the Yamabe problem. On compact Riemannian n-manifolds we show that, for k between and including 3 and n, this prescription equation is an Euler-Lagrange equation of some action if and only if the structure is locally conformally flat.
We study the spectrum of phase transitions with prescribed mean curvature in Riemannian manifolds. These phase transitions are solutions to an inhomogeneous semilinear elliptic PDE that give rise to diffuse objects (varifolds) that limit to hypersurfaces, possibly with singularities, whose mean curvature is determined by the "prescribed mean curvature" function and the limiting multiplicity. We establish upper bounds for the eigenvalues of the diffuse problem, as well as the more subtle lower bounds when the diffuse problem converges with multiplicity one. For the latter, we also establish asy…
We study the resonant prescribed T-curvature problem on a compact 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold with boundary. We derive sharp energy and gradient estimates of the associated Euler-Lagrange functional to characterize the critical points at infinity of the associated variational problem under a non-degeneracy on a naturally associated Hamiltonian function. Using this, we derive a Morse type lemma around the critical points at infinity. Using the Morse lemma at infinity, we prove new existence results of Morse theoretical type. Combining the Morse lemma at infinity and the Liouville version …
Existence and regularity of minimizers for a geometric variational problem is shown. The variational integral models an energy contribution of the interface between two immiscible fluids in the presence of surfactants and includes a Helfrich type contribution, a Frank type contribution and a coupling term between the orientation of the surfactants and the curvature of the interface. Analytical results are proven in a one--dimensional situation for curves.
We propose a definition of the weighted $σ_k$-curvature of a smooth metric measure space and justify it in two ways. First, we show that the weighted $σ_k$-curvature prescription problem is governed by a fully nonlinear second order elliptic PDE which is variational when $k=1,2$ or the smooth metric measure space is locally conformally flat in the weighted sense. Second, we show that, in the variational cases, quasi-Einstein metrics are stable with respect to the total weighted $σ_k$-curvature functional. We also discuss related conjectures for weighted Einstein manifolds.
Conformal invariance plays a significant role in many areas of Physics, such as conformal field theory, renormalization theory, turbulence, general relativity. Naturally, it also plays an important role in geometry: theory of Riemannian surfaces, Weyl tensors, $Q$-curvature, Yang-Mills fields, etc... We shall be concerned with the study of conformal invariance in analysis. More precisely, we will focus on the study of nonlinear PDEs arising from conformally invariant two dimensional variational problems (e.g. harmonic maps, prescribed mean curvature surfaces, Willmore and Constrained conformal…
We consider the Willmore functional on graphs, with an additional penalization of the area where the curvature is non-zero. Interpreting the penalization parameter as a Lagrange multiplier, this corresponds to the Willmore functional with a constraint on the area where the graph is flat. Sending the penalization parameter to $\infty$ and rescaling suitably, we derive the limit functional in the sense of $Γ$-convergence.
We study curvature functionals for immersed 2-spheres in a compact, three-dimensional Riemannian manifold M. Under the assumption that the sectional curvature of M is strictly positive, we prove the existence of a smoothly immersed sphere minimizing the L^{2} integral of the second fundamental form. Assuming instead that the sectional curvature is less than or equal to 2, and that there exists a point in M with scalar curvature bigger than 6, we obtain a smooth 2-sphere minimizing the integral of 1/4|H|^{2} +1, where H is the mean curvature vector.
Functionals involving surface curvature are important across a range of scientific disciplines, and their extrema are representative of physically meaningful objects such as atomic lattices and biomembranes. Inspired in particular by the relationship of the Willmore energy to lipid bilayers, we consider a general functional depending on a surface and a symmetric combination of its principal curvatures, provided the surface is immersed in a 3-D space form. We compute the first and second variations of this functional, leading to expressions given entirely in terms of the surface fundamental for…
We propose a natural definition of the weighted $σ_k$-curvature for a manifold with density; i.e.\ a triple $(M^n,g,e^{-ϕ}\mathrm{dvol})$. This definition is intended to capture the key properties of the $σ_k$-curvatures in conformal geometry with the role of pointwise conformal changes of the metric replaced by pointwise changes of the measure. We justify our definition through three main results. First, we show that shrinking gradient Ricci solitons are local extrema of the total weighted $σ_k$-curvature functionals when the weighted $σ_k$-curvature is variational. Second, we characterize th…
On simple geodesic disks of constant curvature, we derive new functional relations for the geodesic X-ray transform, involving a certain class of elliptic differential operators whose ellipticity degenerates normally at the boundary. We then use these relations to derive sharp mapping properties for the X-ray transform and its corresponding normal operator. Finally, we discuss the possibility of theoretically rigorous regularized inversions for the X-ray transform when defined on such manifolds.
This paper connects nonpositive sectional curvature of a Riemannian manifold with the displacement convexity of the variance functional on the space $P(M)$ of probability measures over $M$. We show that $M$ has nonpositive sectional curvature and has trivial topology (i.e, is homeomorphic to $\mathbf{R}^n$) if and only if the variance functional on $P(M)$ is displacement convex. This is followed by a Jensen type inequality for the variance functional with respect to Wasserstein barycenters, as well as by a result comparing the variance of the Wasserstein and linear barycenters of a probability…
Given a compact four-dimensional Riemannian manifold $(M, g)$ with boundary, we study the problem of existence of Riemannian metrics on $M$ conformal to $g$ with prescribed $Q$-curvature in the interior $\mathring{M}$ of $M$, and zero $T$-curvature and mean curvature on the boundary $\partial M$ of $M$. This geometric problem is equivalent to solving a fourth-order elliptic boundary value problem (BVP) involving the Paneitz operator with boundary conditions of Chang-Qing and Neumann operators. The corresponding BVP has a variational formulation but the corresponding variational problem, in the…
By variational methods, for a kind of Webster scalar curvature problems on the CR sphere with cylindrically symmetric curvature, we construct some multi-peak solutions as the parameter is sufficiently small under certain assumptions. We also obtain the asymptotic behaviors of the solutions.
For two-dimensional, immersed closed surfaces $f:Σ\to \R^n$, we study the curvature functionals $\mathcal{E}^p(f)$ and $\mathcal{W}^p(f)$ with integrands $(1+|A|^2)^{p/2}$ and $(1+|H|^2)^{p/2}$, respectively. Here $A$ is the second fundamental form, $H$ is the mean curvature and we assume $p > 2$. Our main result asserts that $W^{2,p}$ critical points are smooth in both cases. We also prove a compactness theorem for $\mathcal{W}^p$-bounded sequences. In the case of $\mathcal{E}^p$ this is just Langer's theorem \cite{langer85}, while for $\mathcal{W}^p$ we have to impose a bound for the Willmor…
We investigate the boundary behavior of variational solutions of Dirichlet problems for prescribed mean curvature equations at smooth boundary points where certain boundary curvature conditions are satisfied (which preclude the existence of local barrier functions). We prove that if the Dirichlet boundary data $ϕ$ is continuous at such a point (and possibly nowhere else), then the solution of the variational problem is continuous at this point.
We connect the well-known theory of functional forms of variational bicomplex with the theory of antiexact differential forms. We identify antiexact functional forms as an obstruction to the variationality of differential equations. The most prominent result of this observation is the formulation of the variational problem for some differential equations that are not variational and neither have a variational multiplier. Heat, Navier-Stokes, and KdV equations illustrate this new variational principle.
We present some results of geometric convergence of level sets for solutions of total variation denoising as the regularization parameter tends to zero. The common feature among them is that they make use of explicit constructions of variational mean curvatures for general sets of finite perimeter. Consequently, no additional regularity of the level sets of the ideal data is assumed, and in particular the subgradient of the total variation at it could be empty. In exchange, other restrictions on the data or on the noise are required. We consider two cases: characteristic functions with a param…
Following the global method for relaxation we prove an integral representation result for a large class of variational functionals naturally defined on the space of functions with Bounded Deformation. Mild additional continuity assumptions are required on the functionals.
We study a variational functional of Trudinger-Moser type associated with one-sided Borel probability measure. Its boundedness at the extremal parameter holds when the residual vanishing occurs. In the proof we use a variant of the Y.Y. Li estimate.
In this paper, we study the Wasserstein gradient flow structure of the porous medium equation. We prove that, for the case of $q$-Gaussians on the real line, the functional derived by the JKO-discretization scheme is asymptotically equivalent to a rate-large-deviation-like functional. The result explains why the Wasserstein metric as well as the combination of it with the Tsallis-entropy play an important role.
We consider thin plates whose energy density is a quadratic function of the difference between the second fundamental form of the deformed configuration and a "natural" curvature tensor. This tensor either denotes the second fundamental form of the stress-free configuration, if it exists, or a target curvature tensor. In the latter case, residual stress arises from the geometrical frustration involved in the attempt to achieve the target curvature: as a result, the plate is naturally twisted, even in the absence of external forces or prescribed boundary conditions. Here, starting from this kin…
We consider a Neumann problem for strictly convex variational functionals of linear growth. We establish the existence of minimisers among $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-functions provided that the domain under consideration is simply connected. Hence, in this situation, the relaxation of the functional to the space of functions of bounded variation, which has better compactness properties, is not necessary. Similar $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-regularity results for the corresponding Dirichlet problem are only known under rather restrictive convexity assumptions limiting its non-uniformity up to the bo…
We provide a general treatment of perturbations of a class of functionals modeled on convolution energies with integrable kernel which approximate the $p$-th norm of the gradient as the kernel is scaled by letting a small parameter $\varepsilon$ tend to $0$. We first provide the necessary functional-analytic tools to show coerciveness in $L^p$. The main result is a compactness and integral-representation theorem which shows that limits of convolution-type energies is a standard local integral functional with $p$-growth defined on a Sobolev space. This result is applied to obtain periodic homog…
We investigate the problem of finding smooth hypersurfaces of constant mean curvature in hyperbolic space, which can be represented as radial graphs over a subdomain of the upper hemisphere. Our approach is variational and our main results are proved via rearrangement techniques.
We minimize elastic energies on framed curves which penalize both curvature and torsion. We also discuss critical points using the infinite dimensional version of the Lagrange multipliers' method. Finally, some examples arising from the applications are discussed and also numerical experiments are presented.
We study an approximation scheme for a variational theory of cohesive fracture in a one-dimensional setting. Here, the energy functional is approximated by a family of functionals depending on a small parameter $0 < \varepsilon \ll 1$ and on two fields: the elastic part of the displacement field and an eigendeformation field that describes the inelastic response of the material beyond the elastic regime. We measure the inelastic contributions of the latter in terms of a non-local energy functional. Our main result shows that, as $\varepsilon \to 0$, the approximate functionals $Γ$-converge to …
In this paper we consider variational problems involving 1-dimensional connected sets in the Euclidean plane, such as the classical Steiner tree problem and the irrigation (Gilbert-Steiner) problem. We relate them to optimal partition problems and provide a variational approximation through Modica-Mortola type energies proving a $Γ$-convergence result. We also introduce a suitable convex relaxation and develop the corresponding numerical implementations. The proposed methods are quite general and the results we obtain can be extended to $n$-dimensional Euclidean space or to more general manifo…
Solution Theory, Variational Formulations, and Functional A Posteriori Error Estimates for General First Order Systems with Applications to Electro-Magneto-Statics and More
We propose a model for finding one-dimensional structure in a given measure. Our approach is based on minimizing an objective functional which combines the average-distance functional to measure the quality of the approximation and penalizes the curvature, similarly to the elastica functional. Introducing the curvature penalization overcomes some of the shortcomings of the average-distance functional, in particular the lack of regularity of minimizers. We establish existence, uniqueness and regularity of minimizers of the proposed functional. In particular we establish $C^{1,1}$ estimates on t…
We study the variational limit of the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ spin model on the square lattice in the vicinity of the ferromagnet/helimagnet transition point as the lattice spacing vanishes. We carry out the $Γ$-convergence analysis of proper scalings of the energy and we characterize the optimal cost of a chirality transition in $BV$ proving that the system is asymptotically driven by a discrete version of a non-linear perturbation of the Aviles-Giga energy functional.
This paper studies the large sample asymptotics of data analysis procedures based on the optimization of functionals defined on $k$-NN graphs on point clouds. The paper is framed in the context of minimization of balanced cut functionals, but our techniques, ideas and results can be adapted to other functionals of relevance. We rigorously show that provided the number of neighbors in the graph $k:=k_n$ scales with the number of points in the cloud as $n \gg k_n \gg \log(n)$, then with probability one, the solution to the graph cut optimization problem converges towards the solution of an analo…
A new energy functional for pure traction problems in elasticity has been deduced in [23] as the variational limit of nonlinear elastic energy functional for a material body subject to an equilibrated force field: a sort of Gamma limit with respect to the weak convergence of strains when a suitable small parameter tends to zero. This functional exhibits a gap that makes it different from the classical linear elasticity functional. Nevertheless a suitable compatibility condition on the force field ensures coincidence of related minima and minimizers. Here we show some relevant properties of the…
We consider the Perona-Malik functional in dimension one, namely an integral functional whose Lagrangian is convex-concave with respect to the derivative, with a convexification that is identically zero. We approximate and regularize the functional by adding a term that depends on second order derivatives multiplied by a small coefficient. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of minima and minimizers as this small parameter vanishes. In particular, we show that minimizers exhibit the so-called staircasing phenomenon, namely they develop a sort of microstructure that looks like a piecewise co…
We introduce a stochastic particle system that corresponds to the Fokker-Planck equation with decay in the many-particles limit, and study its large deviations. We show that the large-deviation rate functional corresponds to an energy-dissipation functional in a Gamma-convergence sense. Moreover, we prove that the resulting functional, which involves entropic terms and the Wasserstein metric, is again a variational formulation for the Fokker-Planck equation with decay.
