We provide a general treatment of perturbations of a class of functionals modeled on convolution energies with integrable kernel which approximate the $p$-th norm of the gradient as the kernel is scaled by letting a small parameter $\varepsilon$ tend to $0$. We first provide the necessary functional-analytic tools to show coerciveness in $L^p$. The main result is a compactness and integral-representation theorem which shows that limits of convolution-type energies is a standard local integral functional with $p$-growth defined on a Sobolev space. This result is applied to obtain periodic homogenization results, to study applications to functionals defined on point-clouds, to stochastic homogenization and to the study of limits of the related gradient flows.
Following the global method for relaxation we prove an integral representation result for a large class of variational functionals naturally defined on the space of functions with Bounded Deformation. Mild additional continuity assumptions are required on the functionals.
We study a variational functional of Trudinger-Moser type associated with one-sided Borel probability measure. Its boundedness at the extremal parameter holds when the residual vanishing occurs. In the proof we use a variant of the Y.Y. Li estimate.
In this paper, we study the Wasserstein gradient flow structure of the porous medium equation. We prove that, for the case of $q$-Gaussians on the real line, the functional derived by the JKO-discretization scheme is asymptotically equivalent to a rate-large-deviation-like functional. The result explains why the Wasserstein metric as well as the combination of it with the Tsallis-entropy play an important role.
We consider a Neumann problem for strictly convex variational functionals of linear growth. We establish the existence of minimisers among $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-functions provided that the domain under consideration is simply connected. Hence, in this situation, the relaxation of the functional to the space of functions of bounded variation, which has better compactness properties, is not necessary. Similar $\operatorname{W}^{1,1}$-regularity results for the corresponding Dirichlet problem are only known under rather restrictive convexity assumptions limiting its non-uniformity up to the bo…
We study an approximation scheme for a variational theory of cohesive fracture in a one-dimensional setting. Here, the energy functional is approximated by a family of functionals depending on a small parameter $0 < \varepsilon \ll 1$ and on two fields: the elastic part of the displacement field and an eigendeformation field that describes the inelastic response of the material beyond the elastic regime. We measure the inelastic contributions of the latter in terms of a non-local energy functional. Our main result shows that, as $\varepsilon \to 0$, the approximate functionals $Γ$-converge to …
In this paper, we show that given appropriate boundary data, the free boundary and the fixed boundary of minimizers of functionals of type \eqref{functional} contact each other in a tangential fashion. We prove this result via classification of the global profiles, adapting the ideas from \cite{KKS06}.
We connect the well-known theory of functional forms of variational bicomplex with the theory of antiexact differential forms. We identify antiexact functional forms as an obstruction to the variationality of differential equations. The most prominent result of this observation is the formulation of the variational problem for some differential equations that are not variational and neither have a variational multiplier. Heat, Navier-Stokes, and KdV equations illustrate this new variational principle.
In this paper we consider variational problems involving 1-dimensional connected sets in the Euclidean plane, such as the classical Steiner tree problem and the irrigation (Gilbert-Steiner) problem. We relate them to optimal partition problems and provide a variational approximation through Modica-Mortola type energies proving a $Γ$-convergence result. We also introduce a suitable convex relaxation and develop the corresponding numerical implementations. The proposed methods are quite general and the results we obtain can be extended to $n$-dimensional Euclidean space or to more general manifo…
We consider the reduced Allen-Cahn action functional, which appears as the sharp interface limit of the Allen-Cahn action functional and can be understood as a formal action functional for a stochastically perturbed mean curvature flow. For suitable evolutions of generalized hypersurfaces this functional consists of the sum of the squares of the mean curvature and of the velocity vector, integrated over time and space. For given initial and final conditions we investigate the corresponding action minimization problem. We give a generalized formulation and prove compactness and lower semicontin…
A new energy functional for pure traction problems in elasticity has been deduced in [23] as the variational limit of nonlinear elastic energy functional for a material body subject to an equilibrated force field: a sort of Gamma limit with respect to the weak convergence of strains when a suitable small parameter tends to zero. This functional exhibits a gap that makes it different from the classical linear elasticity functional. Nevertheless a suitable compatibility condition on the force field ensures coincidence of related minima and minimizers. Here we show some relevant properties of the…
We study the variational limit of the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ spin model on the square lattice in the vicinity of the ferromagnet/helimagnet transition point as the lattice spacing vanishes. We carry out the $Γ$-convergence analysis of proper scalings of the energy and we characterize the optimal cost of a chirality transition in $BV$ proving that the system is asymptotically driven by a discrete version of a non-linear perturbation of the Aviles-Giga energy functional.
We consider the Perona-Malik functional in dimension one, namely an integral functional whose Lagrangian is convex-concave with respect to the derivative, with a convexification that is identically zero. We approximate and regularize the functional by adding a term that depends on second order derivatives multiplied by a small coefficient. We investigate the asymptotic behavior of minima and minimizers as this small parameter vanishes. In particular, we show that minimizers exhibit the so-called staircasing phenomenon, namely they develop a sort of microstructure that looks like a piecewise co…

We present a variational resolution of the incompressible Navier-Stokes system by means of stabilized Weighted-Inertia-Dissipation-Energy (WIDE) functionals. The minimization of these parameter-dependent functionals corresponds to an elliptic-in-time regularization of the system. By passing to the limit in the regularization parameter along subsequences of WIDE minimizers one recovers a classical Leray-Hopf weak solution.
Let $Ω$ be an open subset of a Stein manifold $Σ$ and let $M$ be its boundary. It is well known that $M$ inherits a natural contact structure. In this paper we consider a family of variational functionals $F_\varepsilon$ defined by the sum of two terms: a Dirichlet-type energy associated with a sub-Riemannian structure in $Ω$ and a potential term on the boundary $M$. We prove that the functionals $F_\varepsilon$ $Γ$-converge to the intrinsic perimeter in $M$ associated with its contact structure. Similar results have been obtained in the Euclidean space by Alberti, Bouchitté, Seppecher. We str…
This paper studies the large sample asymptotics of data analysis procedures based on the optimization of functionals defined on $k$-NN graphs on point clouds. The paper is framed in the context of minimization of balanced cut functionals, but our techniques, ideas and results can be adapted to other functionals of relevance. We rigorously show that provided the number of neighbors in the graph $k:=k_n$ scales with the number of points in the cloud as $n \gg k_n \gg \log(n)$, then with probability one, the solution to the graph cut optimization problem converges towards the solution of an analo…
We study two non-local variational problems that are characterized by the presence of a Riesz-like repulsive term that competes with an attractive term. The first functional is defined on the subsets of $\mathbb{R}^N$ and has the fractional perimeter $\mathcal{P}_s$ as attractive term. The second functional instead is defined on $L^1(\mathbb{R}^N;[0,1])$ and contains an attractive term of positive-power-type. For both of the functionals we prove that balls are the unique minimizers in the appropriate volume constraint range, generalizing the results already present in the literature for more s…
We introduce a stochastic particle system that corresponds to the Fokker-Planck equation with decay in the many-particles limit, and study its large deviations. We show that the large-deviation rate functional corresponds to an energy-dissipation functional in a Gamma-convergence sense. Moreover, we prove that the resulting functional, which involves entropic terms and the Wasserstein metric, is again a variational formulation for the Fokker-Planck equation with decay.
We consider hydrodynamic scaling limits for a class of reversible interacting particle systems, which includes the symmetric simple exclusion process and certain zero-range processes. We study a (non-quadratic) microscopic action functional for these systems. We analyse the behaviour of this functional in the hydrodynamic limit and we establish conditions under which it converges to the (quadratic) action functional of Macroscopic Fluctuation Theory. We discuss the implications of these results for rigorous analysis of hydrodynamic limits.
The Bayesian update can be viewed as a variational problem by characterizing the posterior as the minimizer of a functional. The variational viewpoint is far from new and is at the heart of popular methods for posterior approximation. However, some of its consequences seem largely unexplored. We focus on the following one: defining the posterior as the minimizer of a functional gives a natural path towards the posterior by moving in the direction of steepest descent of the functional. This idea is made precise through the theory of gradient flows, allowing to bring new tools to the study of Ba…
