We introduce a functional calculus with simple syntax and operational semantics in which the calculi introduced so far in the Curry-Howard correspondence for Classical Logic can be faithfully encoded. Our calculus enjoys confluence without any restriction. Its type system enforces strong normalization of expressions and it is a sound and complete system for full implicational Classical Logic. We give a very simple denotational semantics which allows easy calculations of the interpretation of expressions.
The stack calculus is a functional language in which is in a Curry-Howard correspondence with classical logic. It enjoys confluence but, as well as Parigot's lambda-mu, does not admit the Bohm Theorem, typical of the lambda-calculus. We present a simple extension of stack calculus which is for the stack calculus what Saurin's Lambda-mu is for lambda-mu.
Computability logic is a formal theory of computability. The earlier article "Introduction to cirquent calculus and abstract resource semantics" by Japaridze proved soundness and completeness for the basic fragment CL5 of computability logic. The present article extends that result to the more expressive cirquent calculus system CL6, which is a conservative extension of both CL5 and classical propositional logic.
Public announcement logic(PAL) is an extension of epistemic logic (EL) with some reduction axioms. In this paper, we propose a cut-free labelled sequent calculus for PAL, which is an extension of that for EL with sequent rules adapted from the reduction axioms. This calculus admits cut and allows terminating proof search.
We consider Gödel temporal logic ($\sf GTL$), a variant of linear temporal logic based on Gödel--Dummett propositional logic. In recent work, we have shown this logic to enjoy natural semantics both as a fuzzy logic and as a superintuitionistic logic. Using semantical methods, the logic was shown to be {\sc pspace}-complete. In this paper we provide a deductive calculus for $\sf GTL$, and show this calculus to be sound and complete for the above-mentioned semantics.
Bi-intuitionistic logic is the extension of intuitionistic logic with a connective dual to implication. Bi-intuitionistic logic was introduced by Rauszer as a Hilbert calculus with algebraic and Kripke semantics. But her subsequent ``cut-free'' sequent calculus for BiInt has recently been shown by Uustalu to fail cut-elimination. We present a new cut-free sequent calculus for BiInt, and prove it sound and complete with respect to its Kripke semantics. Ensuring completeness is complicated by the interaction between implication and its dual, similarly to future and past modalities in tense logic…
The so-called light logics have been introduced as logical systems enjoying quite remarkable normalization properties. Designing a type assignment system for pure lambda calculus from these logics, however, is problematic. In this paper we show that shifting from usual call-by-name to call-by-value lambda calculus allows regaining strong connections with the underlying logic. This will be done in the context of Elementary Affine Logic (EAL), designing a type system in natural deduction style assigning EAL formulae to lambda terms.
The paper introduces a knowledge representation language that combines the event calculus with description logic in a logic programming framework. The purpose is to provide the user with an expressive language for modelling and analysing systems that evolve over time. The approach is exemplified with the logic programming language as implemented in the Fusemate system. The paper extends Fusemate's rule language with a weakly DL-safe interface to the description logic $\cal ALCIF$ and adapts the event calculus to this extended language. This way, time-stamped ABoxes can be manipulated as fluent…
We introduce a refutation graph calculus for classical first-order predicate logic, which is an extension of previous ones for binary relations. One reduces logical consequence to establishing that a constructed graph has empty extension, i. e. it represents bottom. Our calculus establishes that a graph has empty extension by converting it to a normal form, which is expanded to other graphs until we can recognize conflicting situations (equivalent to a formula and its negation).
We present a hypersequent calculus $\text{G}^3\textŁ\forall$ for first-order infinite-valued Łukasiewicz logic and for an extension of it, first-order rational Pavelka logic; the calculus is intended for bottom-up proof search. In $\text{G}^3\textŁ\forall$, there are no structural rules, all the rules are invertible, and designations of multisets of formulas are not repeated in any premise of the rules. The calculus $\text{G}^3\textŁ\forall$ proves any sentence that is provable in at least one of the previously known hypersequent calculi for the given logics. We study proof-theoretic propertie…
The formal system of intuitionistic epistemic logic IEL was proposed by S. Artemov and T. Protopopescu. It provides the formal foundation for the study of knowledge from an intuitionistic point of view based on Brouwer-Hayting-Kolmogorov semantics of intuitionism. We construct a cut-free sequent calculus for IEL and establish that polynomial space is sufficient for the proof search in it. So, we prove that IEL is PSPACE-complete.
Nominal logic is a variant of first-order logic that provides support for reasoning about bound names in abstract syntax. A key feature of nominal logic is the new-quantifier, which quantifies over fresh names (names not appearing in any values considered so far). Previous attempts have been made to develop convenient rules for reasoning with the new-quantifier, but we argue that none of these attempts is completely satisfactory. In this article we develop a new sequent calculus for nominal logic in which the rules for the new- quantifier are much simpler than in previous attempts. We also pro…
The primary goal of this paper is to present a unified way to transform the syntax of a logic system into certain initial algebraic structure so that it can be studied algebraically. The algebraic structures which one may choose for this purpose are various clones over a full subcategory of a category. We show that the syntax of equational logic, lambda calculus and first order logic can be represented as clones or right algebras of clones over the set of positive integers. The semantics is then represented by structures derived from left algebras of these clones.
Nakano's "later" modality, inspired by Gödel-Löb provability logic, has been applied in type systems and program logics to capture guarded recursion. Birkedal et al modelled this modality via the internal logic of the topos of trees. We show that the semantics of the propositional fragment of this logic can be given by linear converse-well-founded intuitionistic Kripke frames, so this logic is a marriage of the intuitionistic modal logic KM and the intermediate logic LC. We therefore call this logic $\mathrm{KM}_{\mathrm{lin}}$. We give a sound and cut-free complete sequent calculus for $\math…
Full Intuitionistic Linear Logic (FILL) is multiplicative intuitionistic linear logic extended with par. Its proof theory has been notoriously difficult to get right, and existing sequent calculi all involve inference rules with complex annotations to guarantee soundness and cut-elimination. We give a simple and annotation-free display calculus for FILL which satisfies Belnap's generic cut-elimination theorem. To do so, our display calculus actually handles an extension of FILL, called Bi-Intuitionistic Linear Logic (BiILL), with an `exclusion' connective defined via an adjunction with par. We…
We have developed a web-based pedagogical proof assistant, the Proof Tree Builder, that lets you apply rules upwards from the initial goal in sequent calculus and Hoare logic for a simple imperative language. We equipped our tool with a basic proof automation feature and Z3 integration. Students in the automated reasoning course at Princeton University used our tool and found it intuitive. The Proof Tree Builder is available online at https://proof-tree-builder.github.io.
In this paper, we show that theory of processes can be reduced to the theory of spatial logic. Firstly, we propose a spatial logic SL for higher order pi-calculus, and give an inference system of SL. The soundness and incompleteness of SL are proved. Furthermore, we show that the structure congruence relation and one-step transition relation can be described as the logical relation of SL formulae. We also extend bisimulations for processes to that for SL formulae. Then we extend all definitions and results of SL to a weak semantics version of SL, called WL. At last, we add mu-operator to SL. T…
We specify the operational semantics and bisimulation relations for the finite pi-calculus within a logic that contains the nabla quantifier for encoding generic judgments and definitions for encoding fixed points. Since we restrict to the finite case, the ability of the logic to unfold fixed points allows this logic to be complete for both the inductive nature of operational semantics and the coinductive nature of bisimulation. The nabla quantifier helps with the delicate issues surrounding the scope of variables within pi-calculus expressions and their executions (proofs). We illustrate seve…
In this paper, we define a multi-type calculus for inquisitive logic, which is sound, complete and enjoys Belnap-style cut-elimination and subformula property. Inquisitive logic is the logic of inquisitive semantics, a semantic framework developed by Groenendijk, Roelofsen and Ciardelli which captures both assertions and questions in natural language. Inquisitive logic is sound and complete w.r.t. the so-called state semantics (also known as team semantics). The Hilbert-style presentation of inquisitive logic is not closed under uniform substitution; indeed, some occurrences of formulas are re…
Modal fixpoint logics traditionally play a central role in computer science, in particular in artificial intelligence and concurrency. The mu-calculus and its relatives are among the most expressive logics of this type. However, popular fixpoint logics tend to trade expressivity for simplicity and readability, and in fact often live within the single variable fragment of the mu-calculus. The family of such flat fixpoint logics includes, e.g., LTL, CTL, and the logic of common knowledge. Extending this notion to the generic semantic framework of coalgebraic logic enables covering a wide range o…
A grammar logic refers to an extension to the multi-modal logic K in which the modal axioms are generated from a formal grammar. We consider a proof theory, in nested sequent calculus, of grammar logics with converse, i.e., every modal operator [a] comes with a converse. Extending previous works on nested sequent systems for tense logics, we show all grammar logics (with or without converse) can be formalised in nested sequent calculi, where the axioms are internalised in the calculi as structural rules. Syntactic cut-elimination for these calculi is proved using a procedure similar to that fo…
It is well known that we can use structural proof theory to refine, or generalize, existing paradigmatic computational primitives, or to discover new ones. Under such a point of view we keep developing a programme whose goal is establishing a correspondence between proof-search of a logical system and computations in a process algebra. We give a purely logical account of a process algebra operation which strictly includes the behavior of restriction on actions we find in Milner CCS. This is possible inside a logical system in the Calculus of Structures of Deep Inference endowed with a self-dua…
The aim of our paper is twofold: firstly we present a sequent calculus for an intuitionistic non-Fregean logic ISCI, which is based on the calculus presented in the paper by Chlebowski and Leszczynska-Jasion, 'An Investigation into Intuitionistic Logic with Identity' (Bulletin of the Section of Logic 48(4), p. 259-283, 2019) and, secondly, we discuss the problem of decidability of ISCI via the obtained system. The original calculus from the mentioned paper did not provide the decidability result for ISCI. There are two problems to be solved in order to obtain this result: the so called loops c…
The syntactic calculus of Lambek is a deductive system for the multiplicative fragment of intuitionistic non-commutative linear logic. As a fine-grained calculus of resources, it has many applications, mostly in formal computational investigations of natural languages. This paper introduces a calculus of beta-eta-long normal forms for derivations in the Lambek calculus with multiplicative unit and conjunction among its logical connectives. Reduction to normal form follows the normalization by evaluation (NbE) strategy: (i) evaluate a derivation in a Kripke model of Lambek calculus; (ii) extrac…
The paper presents probabilistic extensions of interval temporal logic (ITL) and duration calculus (DC) with infinite intervals and complete Hilbert-style proof systems for them. The completeness results are a strong completeness theorem for the system of probabilistic ITL with respect to an abstract semantics and a relative completeness theorem for the system of probabilistic DC with respect to real-time semantics. The proposed systems subsume probabilistic real-time DC as known from the literature. A correspondence between the proposed systems and a system of probabilistic interval temporal …
The framework of psi-calculi extends the pi-calculus with nominal datatypes for data structures and for logical assertions and conditions. These can be transmitted between processes and their names can be statically scoped as in the standard pi-calculus. Psi-calculi can capture the same phenomena as other proposed extensions of the pi-calculus such as the applied pi-calculus, the spi-calculus, the fusion calculus, the concurrent constraint pi-calculus, and calculi with polyadic communication channels or pattern matching. Psi-calculi can be even more general, for example by allowing structured …
Dialectical logic is the logic of dialectical processes. The goal of dialectical logic is to reveal the dynamical notions inherent in logical computational systems. The fundamental notions of proposition and truth-value in standard logic are subsumed by the notions of process and flow in dialectical logic. Standard logic motivates the core sequential aspect of dialectical logic. Horn-clause logic requires types and nonsymmetry and also motivates the parallel aspect of dialectical logic. The process logics of Milner and Hoare reveal the internal/external aspects of dialectical logic. The sequen…
Fractional calculus is a generalization of classical theories of integration and differentiation to arbitrary order (i.e., real or complex numbers). In the last two decades, this new mathematical modeling approach has been widely used to analyze a wide class of physical systems in various fields of science and engineering. In this paper, we describe an ongoing project which aims at formalizing the basic theories of fractional calculus in the HOL Light theorem prover. Mainly, we present the motivation and application of such formalization efforts, a roadmap to achieve our goals, current status …
In order to combine operational and logical styles of specifications in one unified framework, the notion of logic labelled transition systems (Logic LTS, for short) has been presented and explored by Lüttgen and Vogler in [TCS 373(1-2):19-40; Inform. & Comput. 208:845-867]. In contrast with usual LTS, two logical constructors $\wedge$ and $\vee$ over Logic LTSs are introduced to describe logical combinations of specifications. Hitherto such framework has been dealt with in considerable depth, however, process algebraic style way has not yet been involved and the axiomatization of constructors…
A logic calculus is presented that is a conservative extension of linear logic. The motivation beneath this work concerns lazy evaluation, true concurrency and interferences in proof search. The calculus includes two new connectives to deal with multisequent structures and has the cut-elimination property. Extensions are proposed that give first results concerning our objectives.
Classical first-order logic is in many ways central to work in mathematics, linguistics, computer science and artificial intelligence, so it is worthwhile to define it in full detail. We present soundness and completeness proofs of a sequent calculus for first-order logic, formalized in the interactive proof assistant Isabelle/HOL. Our formalization is based on work by Stefan Berghofer, which we have since updated to use Isabelle's declarative proof style Isar (Archive of Formal Proofs, Entry FOL-Fitting, August 2007 / July 2018). We represent variables with de Bruijn indices; this makes subst…
Cirquent calculus is a new proof-theoretic and semantic approach introduced by G.Japaridze for the needs of his theory of computability logic. The earlier article "From formulas to cirquents in computability logic" by Japaridze generalized the concept of cirquents to the version with what are termed clusterng and ranking, and showed that, through cirquents with clustering and ranking, one can capture, refine and generalize the so called extended IF logic. Japaridze's treatment of extended IF logic, however, was purely semantical, and no deductive system was proposed. The present paper syntacti…
We give a linear nested sequent calculus for the basic normal tense logic Kt. We show that the calculus enables backwards proof-search, counter-model construction and syntactic cut-elimination. Linear nested sequents thus provide the minimal amount of nesting necessary to provide an adequate proof-theory for modal logics containing converse. As a bonus, this yields a cut-free calculus for symmetric modal logic KB.
Fixpoints are an important ingredient in semantics, abstract interpretation and program logics. Their addition to a logic can add considerable expressive power. One general issue is how to define proof systems for such logics. Here we examine proof systems for modal logic with fixpoints. We present a tableau proof system for checking validity of formulas which uses names to keep track of unfoldings of fixpoint variables as devised by Jungteerapanich.
Bi-intuitionistic logic is the conservative extension of intuitionistic logic with a connective dual to implication. It is sometimes presented as a symmetric constructive subsystem of classical logic. In this paper, we compare three sequent calculi for bi-intuitionistic propositional logic: (1) a basic standard-style sequent calculus that restricts the premises of implication-right and exclusion-left inferences to be single-conclusion resp. single-assumption and is incomplete without the cut rule, (2) the calculus with nested sequents by Gore et al., where a complete class of cuts is encapsula…
The aim of illocutionary logic is to explain how context can affect the meaning of certain special kinds of performative utterances. Recall that performative utterances are understood as follows: a speaker performs the illocutionary act (e.g. act of assertion, of conjecture, of promise) with the illocutionary force (resp. assertion, conjecture, promise) named by an appropriate performative verb in the way of representing himself as performing that act. In the paper I proposed many-valued interpretation of illocutionary forces understood as modal operators. As a result, I built up a non-Archime…
Separation logics are a family of extensions of Hoare logic for reasoning about programs that mutate memory. These logics are "abstract" because they are independent of any particular concrete memory model. Their assertion languages, called propositional abstract separation logics, extend the logic of (Boolean) Bunched Implications (BBI) in various ways. We develop a modular proof theory for various propositional abstract separation logics using cut-free labelled sequent calculi. We first extend the cut-fee labelled sequent calculus for BBI of Hou et al to handle Calcagno et al's original logi…
In this paper, we present the interval neutrosophic logics which generalizes the fuzzy logic, paraconsistent logic, intuitionistic fuzzy logic and many other non-classical and non-standard logics. We will give the formal definition of interval neutrosophic propositional calculus and interval neutrosophic predicate calculus. Then we give one application of interval neutrosophic logics to do approximate reasoning.
We formalise the pi-calculus using the nominal datatype package, based on ideas from the nominal logic by Pitts et al., and demonstrate an implementation in Isabelle/HOL. The purpose is to derive powerful induction rules for the semantics in order to conduct machine checkable proofs, closely following the intuitive arguments found in manual proofs. In this way we have covered many of the standard theorems of bisimulation equivalence and congruence, both late and early, and both strong and weak in a uniform manner. We thus provide one of the most extensive formalisations of a process calculus e…
In this paper we present a cut-free sequent calculus, called SeqS, for some standard conditional logics, namely CK, CK+ID, CK+MP and CK+MP+ID. The calculus uses labels and transition formulas and can be used to prove decidability and space complexity bounds for the respective logics. We also present CondLean, a theorem prover for these logics implementing SeqS calculi written in SICStus Prolog.
Initiated by Abramsky [1994], the Proofs as Processes agenda is to establish a solid foundation for the study of concurrent languages, by researching the connection between linear logic and the $π$-calculus. To date, Proofs as Processes is still a partial success. Caires and Pfenning [2010] showed that linear propositions correspond to session types, which prescribe the observable behaviour of processes. Further, Carbone et al. [2018] demonstrated that adopting devices from hypersequents [Avron 1991] shapes proofs such that they correspond to the expected syntactic structure of processes in th…
This paper presents a logical approach to the translation of functional calculi into concurrent process calculi. The starting point is a type system for the π-calculus closely related to linear logic. Decompositions of intuitionistic and classical logics into this system provide type-preserving translations of the λ- and λμ-calculus, both for call-by-name and call-by-value evaluation strategies. Previously known encodings of the \lam-calculus are shown to correspond to particular cases of this logical embedding. The realisability interpretation of types in the π-calculus provides systematic so…
The probabilistic modal μ-calculus is a fixed-point logic designed for expressing properties of probabilistic labeled transition systems (PLTS's). Two equivalent semantics have been studied for this logic, both assigning to each state a value in the interval [0,1] representing the probability that the property expressed by the formula holds at the state. One semantics is denotational and the other is a game semantics, specified in terms of two-player stochastic parity games. A shortcoming of the probabilistic modal μ-calculus is the lack of expressiveness required to encode other important tem…
Probabilistic systems are an important theme in AI domain. As the specification language, the logic PCTL is now the default logic for reasoning about probabilistic properties. In this paper, we present a natural and succinct probabilistic extension of mu-calculus, another prominent logic in the concurrency theory. We study the relationship with PCTL. Interestingly, the expressiveness is highly orthogonal with PCTL. The proposed logic captures some useful properties which cannot be expressed in PCTL. We investigate the model checking and satisfiability problem, and show that the model checking …
We propose a new version of formula size game for modal logic. The game characterizes the equivalence of pointed Kripke-models up to formulas of given numbers of modal operators and binary connectives. Our game is similar to the well-known Adler-Immerman game. However, due to a crucial difference in the definition of positions of the game, its winning condition is simpler, and the second player does not have a trivial optimal strategy. Thus, unlike the Adler-Immerman game, our game is a genuine two-person game. We illustrate the use of the game by proving a non-elementary succinctness gap betw…
We offer a simple graphical representation for proofs of intuitionistic logic, which is inspired by proof nets and interaction nets (two formalisms originating in linear logic). This graphical calculus of proofs inherits good features from each, but is not constrained by them. By the Curry-Howard isomorphism, the representation applies equally to the lambda calculus, offering an alternative diagrammatic representation of functional computations.
This paper positively solves an open problem if it is possible to provide a Hilbert system to Epistemic Logic of Friendship (EFL) by Seligman, Girard and Liu. To find a Hilbert system, we first introduce a sound, complete and cut-free tree (or nested) sequent calculus for EFL, which is an integrated combination of Seligman's sequent calculus for basic hybrid logic and a tree sequent calculus for modal logic. Then we translate a tree sequent into an ordinary formula to specify a Hilbert system of EFL and finally show that our Hilbert system is sound and complete for the intended two-dimensional…
A genoid is a category of two objects such that one is the product of itself with the other. A genoid may be viewed as an abstract substitution algebra. It is a remarkable fact that such a simple concept can be applied to present a unified algebraic approach to lambda calculus and first order logic.
We consider an extension of bi-intuitionistic logic with the traditional modalities from tense logic Kt. Proof theoretically, this extension is obtained simply by extending an existing sequent calculus for bi-intuitionistic logic with typical inference rules for the modalities used in display logics. As it turns out, the resulting calculus, LBiKt, seems to be more basic than most intuitionistic tense or modal logics considered in the literature, in particular, those studied by Ewald and Simpson, as it does not assume any a priori relationship between the diamond and the box modal operators. We…
