Novel imaging methods show that the mobile dopants in optimum doped La$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$ (LCO) get self-organized, instead of randomly distributed. Rigid-band models fail because of ordering of dopants and supercell calculations are required to obtain the Fermi surface reconstruction. We have performed advanced band calculations for a large supercell La$_{16}$Cu$_8$O$_{32+N}$ where $N$=1 or 2 oxygen interstitials form rows in the spacer La$_{16}$O$_{16+N}$ layers intercalated between the CuO$_2$ layers as determined by scanning nano x-ray diffraction. The additional oc cupied states made by interstitial oxygen orbitals sit well below the Fermi level ($E_F$) and lead to hole doping as expect ed. The unexpected results show that in the heavily doped puddles the altered Cu(3d)-O(2p) band hybridization at $E_F$ indu ces a multiband electronic structure with the formation of multiple Fermi surface spots: a) small gaps appear in the folde d Fermi surface, b) three mini-bands cross $E_F$ with reduced Fermi energies of 60, 150, and 240 meV respectively, c) the d ensity-of-states and band mass at $E_F$ show substantial increases, and d) spin-polarized calculations show a moderate incr ease of antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations. All calculated features are favorable to enhance superconductivity however the comparison with experimental methods probing the average electronic structure of cuprates will require the description of the electronics of a network of multigap superconducting puddles.
We present a combined magnetic neutron scattering and muon spin rotation study of the nature of the magnetic and superconducting phases in electronically phase separated La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+y), x = 0.04, 065, 0.09. For all samples, we find long-range modulated magnetic order below T_N ~ T_c = 39 K. In sharp contrast wit oxygen-stoichiometric La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4), we find that the magnetic propagation vector as well as the ordered magnetic moment is independent of Sr content and consistent with that of the 'striped' cuprates. Our study provides direct proof that superoxygenation in La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(…
Novel nanoscale probes are opening new venues for understanding unconventional electronic and magnetic functionalities driven by multiscale lattice complexity in doped high temperature superconducting perovskites. In this work we focus on the multiscale texture at supramolecular level of atomic oxygen interstitials (O-i) stripes in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$ at optimal doping for the highest superconducting critical temperature $T_C$=94K. We report compelling evidence for the nematic phase of oxygen-interstitial O-i atomic wires with fractal-like spatial distribution over multiple scales by using sca…
While recent experiments have found that at optimum doping for the highest critical temperature in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$ (Hg1201) the oxygen interstitials (O-i) are not homogeneously distributed but form one-dimensional atomic wires, there are no available information of its electronic structure considering self-organized O-i atomic wires. Here we report the calculated electronic structure of HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$ where oxygen interstitials form atomic wires along (1,0,0) crystal direction in the Hg layer. We find that at optimum doping for superconductivity the chemical potential is tuned near an…
It is well known that the microstructures of the transition-metal oxides (refs 1-3), including the high-transition-temperature (high-Tc) copper oxide superconductors (refs 4-7), are complex. This is particularly so when there are oxygen interstitials or vacancies (ref.8), which influence the bulk properties. For example, the oxygen interstitials in the spacer layers separating the superconducting CuO2 planes undergo ordering phenomena in Sr(2)O(1+y)CuO(2) (ref. 9), YBa(2)Cu(3)O(6+y) (ref. 10) and La(2)CuO(4+y) (refs 11-15) that induce enhancements in the transition temperatures with no changes…
We present results of magnetic neutron diffraction experiments on the co-doped super-oxygenated La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4+y) (LSCO+O) system with x=0.09. The spin-density wave has been studied and we find long-range incommensurate antiferromagnetic order below T_N coinciding with the superconducting ordering temperature T_c=40 K. The incommensurability value is consistent with a hole-doping of n_h~1/8, but in contrast to non-superoxygenated La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO(4) with hole-doping close to n_h ~ 1/8 the magnetic order parameter is not field-dependent. We attribute this to the magnetic order being fully dev…
Band structure calculations are presented for large supercells of Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ (BCO) with O-vacancies in planar or apic al positions, and of superoxygenated La$_2$CuO$_4$ (LCO) with oxygen interstitials in the La$_2$O$_2$ layers. It is foun d that apical oxygen vacancies in BCO act as electron dopants and makes the electronic structure similar to that of hole doped LCO. Excess oxygen interstitials forming wires in the La$_2$O$_2$ layers of LCO are shown to yield a much larger density-of-states at the Fermi energy than for the stoichiometric compound related with a segmentation of the Fermi su…
It is well established that the hole density in the prototypical superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ is very inhomogeneous due to Sr-dopant induced disorder. On the other hand, until recently it is widely believed that the hole distribution in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ doped by interstitial oxygen is much more uniform. Recent nuclear magnetic resonance measurements indicate, however, that the charge inhomogeneity in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ is close to that in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$. Calculations performed in the present paper confirm this observation. We also show t…
The effect of hydrostatic pressure up to 2 GPa on the superconductiong transitions in La{2-x}Sr{x}CuO{4+delta} is investigated. The ambient and high pressure properties of two series of samples with x=0 and x=0.015 and 0<delta<0.1 are characterized and compared by ac-susceptibility measurements. At ambient pressure both sets of samples fit into the same phase diagram as a function of the total hole concentration, n_h. For n_h<0.085 there is a single superconducting transition (T_{c} approx 30 K) with an unusually large pressure coefficient, dT_c{30}/dp approx 10K/GPa. At higher hole density (n…
The nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) spectrum of strontium doped La$_2$CuO$_4$ surprisingly resembles the NQR spectrum of La$_2$CuO$_4$ doped with excess oxygen, both spectra being dominated by a main peak and one principal satellite peak at similar frequencies. Using first-principles cluster calculations this is investigated here by calculating the electric field gradient (EFG) at the central copper site of the cluster after replacing a lanthanum atom in the cluster with a strontium atom or adding an interstitial oxygen to the cluster. In each case the EFG was increased by approximately 10 …
The oxygen dopants are essential in tuning electronic properties of Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_{n-1}$Cu$_n$O$_{2n+4+δ}$ superconductors. Here we apply the technique of scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy to study the influence of oxygen dopants in an optimally doped Bi$_2$Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$CuO$_{6+δ}$ and an overdoped Bi$_{2-y}$Pb$_y$Sr$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$. In both samples, we find that interstitial oxygen atoms on the SrO layers dominate over the other two forms of oxygen dopants, oxygen vacancies on the SrO layers and interstitial oxygen atoms on the BiO layers. The hole doping is estimated from th…
We present high energy X-ray diffraction studies on the structural phases of an optimal high-$T_c$ superconductor La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4+y}$ tailored by co-hole-doping. This is specifically done by varying the content of two very different chemical species, Sr and O, respectively, in order to study the influence of each. A superstructure known as staging is observed in all samples, with the staging number $n$ increasing for higher Sr dopings $x$. We find that the staging phases emerge abruptly with temperature, and can be described as a second order phase transition with transition temperatur…
The superconducting properties of high-\tc\ materials are functions of carriers concentration, which is controlled by the concentration of defects including heterovalent cations, interstitial oxygen ions, and oxygen vacancies. Here we combine low-temperature thermal treatment of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ epitaxial thin films and confocal Raman spectroscopy to control and investigate oxygen vacancies. We demonstrate that the apical site is the most favorable position to accommodate oxygen vacancies under low-temperature annealing conditions. Additionally we show that in high-quality films of …
Electron-doped infinite-layer Sr$_{1-x}$Eu$_{x}$CuO$_{2+y}$ films over a wide doping range have been prepared epitaxially on SrTiO$_3$(001) using reactive molecular beam epitaxy. In-plane transport measurements of the single crystalline samples reveal a dome-shaped nodeless superconducting phase centered at $x$ $\sim$ 0.15, a Fermi-liquid behavior and pronounced upturn in low temperature resistivity. We show that the resistivity upturn follows square-root temperature dependence, suggesting the emergence of superconductivity via a three-dimensional percolation process. The percolative supercond…
We present results of density functional theory (DFT) calculation of the structural supermodulation in BSCCO-2212 structure, and show that the supermodulation is indeed a spontaneous symmetry breaking of the nominal crystal symmetry, rather than a phenomenon driven by interstitial O dopants. The structure obtained is in excellent quantitative agreement with recent x-ray studies, and reproduces several qualitative aspects of scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) experiments as well. The primary structural modulation affecting the CuO_2 plane is found to be a buckling wave of tilted CuO_5 half-oc…
The organization of dopants in high temperature superconductors provides complex topological geometries that controls superconducting properties. This makes the study of dopants spatial distribution of fundamental importance. The mobile oxygen ions, y, in the CuO2 plane of YBa2Cu3O6+y (0.33<y<0.67) form ordered chains which greatly affect the transport properties of the material. Here we visualize and characterize the 2D spatial organization of these oxygen chains using scanning micro X-ray diffraction measurements in transmission mode on a thin single crystal slab with y=0.33 (Tc=7 K) near th…
Recent experiments on Bi-based cuprate superconductors have revealed an unexpected enhancement of the pairing correlations near the interstitial oxygen dopant ions. Here we propose a possible mechanism -- based on local screening effects -- by which the oxygen dopants do modify the electronic parameters within the CuO_2 planes and strongly increase the superexchange coupling J. This enhances the spin pairing effects locally and may explain the observed spatial variations of the density of states and the pairing gap.
We study the inhomogeneity of the electronic pairing gap observed by STM near the surface of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+δ}$ to be correlated with interstitial O defects. We treat the problem in a slave boson mean field theory of a disordered $t-t^{\prime}-J$ model, and identify three aspects of the O defects related to the inhomogeneity: (1)the superexchange interaction is locally enhanced in their vicinity, which enhances the local pairing gap and reduces the coherence peak; (2)they donate holes into CuO$_2$ plane, which reduces the spinon density of states of and hence the average gap a…
We present a methodology based on \textit{ex-situ} (post-growth) electrochemistry to control the oxygen concentration in thin films of the superconducting oxide La$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$ grown epitaxially on substrates of isostructural LaSrAlO$_4$. The superconducting transition temperature, which depends on the oxygen concentration, can be tuned by adjusting the pH level of the base solution used for the electrochemical reaction. As our main finding, we demonstrate that the dopant oxygens can either occupy the interstitial layer in an orientationally disordered state or organize into a crystalline ph…
Electronic functionalities in materials from silicon to transition metal oxides are to a large extent controlled by defects and their relative arrangement. Outstanding examples are the oxides of copper, where defect order is correlated with their high superconducting transition temperatures. The oxygen defect order can be highly inhomogeneous, even in "optimal" superconducting samples, which raises the question of the nature of the sample regions where the order does not exist but which nonetheless form the "glue" binding the ordered regions together. Here we use scanning X-ray microdiffractio…
