In this paper, we construct the bilinear identities for the wave functions of an extended Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy, which is the KP hierarchy with particular extended flows (2008, Phys. Lett. A, 372: 3819). By introducing an auxiliary parameter (denoted by $z$), whose flow corresponds to the so-called squared eigenfunction symmetry of KP hierarchy, we find the tau-function for this extended KP hierarchy. It is shown that the bilinear identities will generate all the Hirota's bilinear equations for the zero-curvature forms of the extended KP hierarchy, which includes two types of KP equation with self-consistent sources (KPSCS). It seems that the Hirota's bilinear equations obtained in this paper for KPSCS are in a simpler form by comparing with the results by Hu and Wang (2007, Inverse Problems, 23: 1433).
In the paper we investigate integrability characteristics for the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy. These characteristics include symmetries, Hamiltonian structures and conserved quantities. We give a Lax triad to construct a master symmetry and a hierarchy of non-isospectral dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili flows. These non-isospectral flows, together with the known isospectral dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili flows, form a Lie algebra, which is used to derive two sets of symmetries for the isospectral dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy. By means of the m…
By the Sylvester equation $\bL\bM-\bM\bK=\br\bs^{\st}$ together with an evolution equation set of $\br$ and $\bs$, generalized Cauchy matrix approach is established to investigate exact solutions for Kadomtsev-Petviashvili system, including Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation and Schwarzian Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. The matrix $\bM$ provides $τ$-function by $τ=|\bI+\bM\bC|$. With the help of some recurrence relations, the reduction to Korteweg-de Vries system, Boussinesq system and extended Boussinesq system are also discussed.
In this note we consider a two-component extension of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy represented with two types of pseudo-differential operators, and construct its Hamiltonian structures by using the $R$-matrix formalism.
We provide rigorous analysis for the direct scattering theory of perturbed Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II one line solitons. Namely, for generic small initial data, the existence of the eigenfunction is proved by establishing uniform estimates of the Green function and the Cauchy integral equation for the eigenfunction is justified by analysing the spectral transform.
We construct the formal solution of the Cauchy problem for the dispersionless Kadomtsev - Petviashvili equation as application of the Inverse Scattering Transform for the vector field corresponding to a Newtonian particle in a time-dependent potential. This is in full analogy with the Cauchy problem for the Kadomtsev - Petviashvili equation, associated with the Inverse Scattering Transform of the time dependent Schroedinger operator for a quantum particle in a time-dependent potential.
The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili reduction method is a crucial method to derive the solitonic solutions of (1+1) dimensional integrable system from high dimensional system. In this work, we explore to use the solutions of lower dimensional system to construct the solutions in the high dimensional one with the Darboux transformation. Especially, we utilize this method to disclose the relationship between the rogue wave and lump solutions. Under one-constraint method, the asymptotic analysis to the lump pattern of Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation is given
In this paper, the compatibility between the gauge transformations and the additional symmetry of the constrained discrete Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy is given, which preserving the form of the additional symmetry of the cdKP hierarchy, up to shifting of the corresponding additional flows by ordinary time flows.
We derive two non-equivalent coverings for the r-th mdKP equation from Maurer--Cartan forms of its symmetry pseudo-group. Also we find Bäcklund transformations between the covering equations.
An extension of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy defined via scalar pseudo-differential operators was studied in [16, 20]. In this paper, we represent the extended KP hierarchy into the form of bilinear equation of (adjoint) Baker-Akhiezer functions, and construct its additional symmetries. As a byproduct, we derive the Virasoro symmetries for the constrained KP hierarchies.
Based on the idea of symmetric constraint, we apply the Gesztesy-Holden's method to derive explicit representations of the Baker-Ahkiezer function $ψ_1$ of the KP hierarchy, from which we provide theta function representations of algebro-geometric solutions for the whole Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) hierarchy. This provides a approach to obtain some special subclasses of algebro-geometric solutions for the KP hierarchy and other high dimensional hierarchy of equations.
The "pseudodual" of Ward's modified chiral model is a dispersionless limit of the matrix Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation. This relation allows to carry solution techniques from KP over to the former model. In particular, lump solutions of the su(m) model with rather complex interaction patterns are reached in this way. We present a new example.
A generalisation of the Lattice Potential Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (LPKP) equation is presented, using the method of Direct Linearisation based on an elliptic Cauchy kernel. This yields a (3+1)-dimensional lattice system with one of the lattice shifts singled out. The integrability of the lattice system is considered, presenting a Lax representation and soliton solutions. An associated continuous system is also derived, yielding a (3+1)-dimensional generalisation of the potential KP equation associated with an elliptic curve.
We study soliton interaction in the Modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-(II) equation (MKP-(II)) using the totally non-negative Grassmannian. One constructs the multi-kink soliton of MKP equation using the $τ$-function and the Binet-Cauchy formula, and then investigates the interaction between kink solitons and line solitons. Especially, Y-type kink-soliton resonance, O-type kink soliton and P-type kink soliton of X-shape are investigated. Their amplitudes of interaction are computed after choosing appropriate phases.
The paper reveals clear links between the differential-difference Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy and the (continuous) Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy, together with their symmetries, Hamiltonian structures and conserved quantities. They are connected through a uniform continuum limit. For the differential-difference Kadomtsev-Petviashvili system, we introduce Lax triads to generate isospectral and non-isospectral flows. This approach provides an integrable master symmetry and simple zero curvature representations of flows. The obtained flows are then proved to generate a Lie algebra w.r.t. …
We extend Gesztesy-Holden's method to 2+1 dimensional case to obtain a unified construction to the algebro-geometric solutions of the whole modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (mKP) hierarchy. Our tools include the relations between solutions of the Gerdjikov-Ivanov (GI) and mKP hierarchy, the Baker-Akhiezer functions in 2+1 dimensions, a special function $ψ_1(P)ψ_2(P^*)$ on $X\times \mathbb{R}^3$ and Dubrovin-type equations for auxiliary divisors.
We establish connections between two cascades of integrable systems generated from the continuum limits of the Hirota-Miwa equation and its remarkable nonlinear counterpart under the Miwa transformation respectively. Among these equations, we are mainly concerned with the semi-discrete bilinear Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation which is seldomly studied in literature. We present both of its Casorati and Grammian determinant solutions. Through the Pfaffianization procedure proposed by Hirota and Ohta, we are able to derive the coupled integrable system for the semi-discrete KP equation.
We present geometric interpretation of the discrete Schwarzian Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation in terms of quadrangular set of points of a projective line. We give also the corresponding interpretation for the projective line considered as a Moebius chain space. In this way we incorporate the conformal geometry interpretation of the equation into the projective geometry approach via Desargues maps.
Exploiting the known structure of soliton solutions, obtained through the Hirota transformation, a quantized representation of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation on the soliton sector is constructed over a Fock space of particles, which may be either bosons or fermions. The classical solution is mapped into an operator, which also obeys the KP equation. The operator is constructed in terms of the particle-number operators. Classical soliton solutions are the expectation values of this operator in multi-particle states in the Fock space. The operator is equation-specific and the state in …
We study a general class of line-soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation by investigating the Wronskian form of its tau-function. We show that, in addition to previously known line-soliton solutions, this class also contains a large variety of new multi-soliton solutions, many of which exhibit nontrivial spatial interaction patterns. We also show that, in general, such solutions consist of unequal numbers of incoming and outgoing line solitons. From the asymptotic analysis of the tau-function, we explicitly characterize the incoming and outgoing line-solitons of this…
Algebro-geometric solutions of the lattice potential modified Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (lpmKP) equation are constructed. A Darboux transformation of the Kaup--Newell spectral problem is employed to generate a Lax triad for the lpmKP equation, as well as to define commutative integrable symplectic maps which generate discrete flows of eigenfunctions. These maps share the same integrals with the finite-dimensional Hamiltonian system associated to the Kaup-Newell spectral problem. We investigate asymptotic behaviors of the Baker-Akhiezer functions and obtain their expression in terms of Riemann the…
A generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation (GKPE) $(u_t+u u_x + β(t)u +γ(t)u_{xxx})_x+σ(t)u_{yy}\ = \ 0$ is shown to admit an infinite-dimensional Lie group of symmetries when $\bt(t), \ga(t)$ and $\si(t)$ are arbitrary. The Lie algebra of this symmetry group contains two arbitrary functions $f(t)$ and $g(t)$. Further, low-dimensional subalgebras and physically meaningful five dimensional Lie algebra containing translation and Galilei transformation are derived. A solution of GKPE involving two arbitrary functions of time $t$, in addition to $f(t)$ and $g(t)$, is obtained using an one-dimen…
The residual symmetry coming from truncated Painleve expansion of KP equation is nonlocal, which is localized in this paper by introducing multiple new dependent variables. By using the standard Lie group approach, the symmetry reduction solutions for KP equation is obtained based on the general form of Lie point symmetry for the prolonged system. In this way, the interaction solutions between solitons and background waves is obtained, which is hard to study by other traditional methods.
A new integrable class of Davey--Stewartson type systems of nonlinear partial differential equations (NPDEs) in 2+1 dimensions is derived from the matrix Kadomtsev--Petviashvili equation by means of an asymptotically exact nonlinear reduction method based on Fourier expansion and spatio-temporal rescaling. The integrability by the inverse scattering method is explicitly demonstrated, by applying the reduction technique also to the Lax pair of the starting matrix equation and thereby obtaining the Lax pair for the new class of systems of equations. The characteristics of the reduction method su…
Regular Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) solitons have been investigated and classified successfully by the Grassmannian. We provide rigorous analysis for the direct scattering problem of perturbed $\textrm{Gr}(1, 2)_{\ge 0}$ KP solitons.
We represent an algorithm allowing one to construct new classes of partially integrable multidimensional nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) starting with the special type of solutions to the (1+1)-dimensional hierarchy of nonlinear PDEs linearizable by the matrix Hopf-Cole substitution (the Bürgers hierarchy). We derive examples of four-dimensional nonlinear matrix PDEs together with they scalar and three-dimensional reductions. Variants of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili type and Korteweg-de Vries type equations are represented among them. Our algorithm is based on the combination of …
In nonlinear physics, the interactions among solitons are well studied thanks to the multiple soliton solutions can be obtained by various effective methods. However, it is very difficult to study interactions among different types of nonlinear waves such as the solitons (or solitary waves), the cnoidal periodic waves and Painlevé waves. In this paper, the nonlocal symmetries related to the Darboux transformations (DT) of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation is localized after imbedding the original system to an enlarged one. Then the DT is used to find the corresponding group invariant so…
A wealth of observations, recently supported by rigorous analysis, indicate that, asymptotically in time, most multi-soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation self-organize in webs comprised of solitons and soliton-junctions. Junctions are connected in pairs, each pair - by a single soliton. The webs expand in time. As distances between junctions grow, the memory of the structure of junctions in a connected pair ceases to affect the structure of either junction. As a result, every junction propagates at a constant velocity, which is determined by the wave numbers that go into…
Regular Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) line solitons have been investigated and classified successfully by the Grassmannians. The inverse scattering method provides a promising and powerful approach to study the stability properties of $\textrm{Gr}(N, M)_{> 0}$ KP solitons. In this paper, we complete rigorous analysis for the direct scattering problem of perturbed $\textrm{Gr}(N, M)_{> 0}$ KP solitons}.
Based on the symbolic computation approach, multiple rogue wave solutions of the generalized (2+1)-dimensional Camassa-Holm-Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation are studied. As an example, we present the 1-rogue wave solutions, 3-rogue wave solutions and 6-rogue wave solutions. Furthermore, some dynamics features of the obtained multiple rogue wave solutions are shown by 3D, contour and density graphics.
We first review the known mathematical results concerning the KP type equations. Then we perform numerical simulations to analyze various qualitative properties of the equations : blow-up versus long time behavior, stability and instability of solitary waves.
The Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation admits a large variety of multi-soliton solutions which exhibit both elastic as well as inelastic types of interactions. This work investigates a general class of multi-solitons which were not previously studied, and which do not in general conserve the number of line solitons after interaction. The incoming and outgoing line solitons for these solutions are explicitly characterized by analyzing the $τ$-function generating such solutions. A special family of $N$-soliton solutions is also considered in this article. These solutions are characterized…
This is a short review of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchies of types B and C. The main objects are the $L$-operator, the wave operator, the auxiliary linear problems for the wave function, the bilinear identity for the wave function and the tau-function. All of them are discussed in the paper. The connections with the usual Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy (of the type A) are clarified. Examples of soliton solutions and the dispersionless limit of the hierarchies are also considered.
Inspired by the works of Y. Ohta and J. Yang, one constructs the lumps solutions in the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-(I) equation using the Grammian determinants. It is shown that the locations of peaks will depend on the real roots of Wronskian of the orthogonal polynomials for the asymptotic behaviors in some particular cases. Also, one can prove that all the locations of peaks are on a vertical line when time approaches - $\infty$, and then they will be on a horizontal line when time approaches $\infty$, i.e., there is a rotation $\fracπ{2}$ after interaction.
We numerically investigate transverse stability and instability of so-called cnoidal waves, i.e., periodic traveling wave solutions of the Korteweg-de Vries equation, under the time-evolution of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. In particular, we find that in KP-I small amplitude cnoidal waves are stable (at least for spatially localized perturbations) and only become unstable above a certain threshold. In contrast to that, KP-II is found to be stable for all amplitudes, or, equivalently, wave speeds. This is in accordance with recent analytical results for solitary waves given in \cite{RT1…
We consider the vectorial approach to the binary Darboux transformations for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy in its Zakharov-Shabat formulation. We obtain explicit formulae for the Darboux transformed potentials in terms of Grammian type determinants. We also study the $n$-th Gel'fand-Dickey hierarchy introducing spectral operators and obtaining similar results. We reduce the above mentioned results to the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili I and II real forms, obtaining corresponding vectorial Darboux transformations. In particular for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili I hierarchy we get the line soliton, …
A functional of the solution of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation maps multi-soliton solutions onto systems of vertices - structures that are localized around soliton junctions. A solution with one junction is mapped onto a single vertex, which emulates a free, spatially extended, particle. In solutions with several junctions, each junction is mapped onto a vertex. Moving in the x-y plane, the vertices collide, coalesce upon collision, and then split up. When well separated, they emulate free particles. Multi-soliton solutions, whose structure does not change under space-time inversion as…
We consider a Frobenius structure associated with the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. This is done, essentially, by applying a continuous analogue of the finite dimensional theory in the space of Schwartz functions on the line. The potential of the Frobenius manifold is found to be a logarithmic potential with quadratic external field. Following the construction of the principal hierarchy, we construct a set of infinitely many commuting flows, which extends the classical dKP hierarchy.
The coupled Kadomtsev--Petviashvili system associated with an elliptic curve, proposed by Date, Jimbo and Miwa [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn., 52:766--771, 1983], is reinvestigated within the direct linearisation framework, which provides us with more insights into the integrability of this elliptic model from the perspective of a general linear integral equation. As a result, we successfully construct for the elliptic coupled Kadomtsev--Petviashvili system not only a Lax pair composed of differential operators in $2\times2$ matrix form but also multi-soliton solutions with phases parametrised by points …
We present the Lax pair for the field elliptic Calogero-Moser system and establish a connection between this system and the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation. Namely, we consider elliptic families of solutions of the KP equation, such that their poles satisfy a constraint of being balanced. We show that the dynamics of these poles is described by a reduction of the field elliptic CM system. We construct a wide class of solutions to the field elliptic CM system by showing that any N-fold branched cover of an elliptic curve gives rise to an elliptic family of solutions of the KP equation with bala…
An asymptotic description of the formation of dispersive shock waves in solutions to the generalized Kadomtsev--Petviashvili (KP) equation is conjectured. The asymptotic description based on a multiscales expansion is given in terms of a special solution to an ordinary differential equation of the Painleve' I hierarchy. Several examples are discussed numerically to provide strong evidence for the validity of the conjecture.
We study the (n+1)-dimensional generalization of the dispersionless Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (dKP) equation, a universal equation describing the propagation of weakly nonlinear, quasi one dimensional waves in n+1 dimensions, and arising in several physical contexts, like acoustics, plasma physics and hydrodynamics. For n=2, this equation is integrable, and it has been recently shown to be a prototype model equation in the description of the two dimensional wave breaking of localized initial data. We construct an exact solution of the n+1 dimensional model containing an arbitrary function of one …
We study the maximum wave amplitude produced by line-soliton interactions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II (KPII) equation, and we discuss a mechanism of generation of large amplitude shallow water waves by multi-soliton interactions of KPII. We also describe a method to predict the possible maximum wave amplitude from asymptotic data. Finally, we report on numerical simulations of multi-soliton complexes of the KPII equation which verify the robustness of all types of soliton interactions and web-like structure.
We derive a particular solution of the extended $r$-reduced KP hierarchy, which is specified by a generalized string equation. The work is a generalization to arbitrary $r\geq 2$ of Buryak's recent results of a solution to the extended open KdV hierarchy which corresponds to $r=2$.
The genus-1 KP-Whitham system is derived for both variants of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (KP) equation (namely, the KPI and KPII equations). The basic properties of the KP-Whitham system, including symmetries, exact reductions, and its possible complete integrability, together with the appropriate generalization of the one-dimensional Riemann problem for the Korteweg-deVries equation are discussed. Finally, the KP-Whitham system is used to study the linear stability properties of the genus-1 solutions of the KPI and KPII equations; it is shown that all genus-1 solutions of KPI are linearly uns…
Under investigation is a generalized (3 + 1)-dimensional B-type Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation with variable coefficients in fluid dynamics. Based on the Hirota's bilinear form and the positive quadratic function, abundant lump solutions are obtained. The interaction solutions between lump solutions and other solitons are also presented. Their dynamical behaviors are graphically shown with different choices of the free parameters.
A generalized Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, describing water waves in oceans of varying depth, density and vorticity is discussed. A priori, it involves 9 arbitrary functions of one, or two variables. The conditions are determined under which the equation allows an infinite dimensional symmetry algebra. This algebra can involve up to three arbitrary functions of time. It depends on precisely three such functions if and only if it is completely integrable.
A characterization of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili hierarchy of type C (CKP) in terms of the KP tau-function is given. Namely, we prove that the CKP hierarchy can be identified with the restriction of odd times flows of the KP hierarchy on the locus of turning points of the second flow. The notion of CKP tau-function is clarified and connected with the KP tau function. Algebraic-geometrical solutions and in particular elliptic solutions are discussed in detail. The new identity for theta-functions of curves with holomorphic involution having fixed points is obtained.
We investigate the Cauchy problem on the cylinder, namely the semi-periodic problem where there is periodicity in the $x$-direction and decay in the $y$-direction, for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation by the inverse spectral transform method. For initial data with small $L^1$ and $L^2$ norms, assuming the zero mass constraint, this initial-value problem is reduced to a Riemann-Hilbert problem on the boundary of certain infinite strips with shift.
The (2+1)-dimensional spherical Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (SKP) equation of J.-K. Xue [Phys. Lett. A 314:479-483 (2003)] fails the Painleve test for integrability at the highest resonance, where a nontrivial compatibility condition for recursion relations appears. This compatibility condition, however, is sufficiently weak and thus allows the SKP equation to possess an integrable (1+1)-dimensional reduction, which is detected by the Weiss method of truncated singular expansions.
This work describes a classification of the $N$-soliton solutions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili II equation in terms of chord diagrams of N chords joining pairs of 2N points. The different classes of N-solitons are enumerated by the distribution of crossings of the chords. The generating function of the chord diagrams is expressed as a continued fraction, special cases of which are moment generating functions for certain kinds of $q$-orthogonal polynomials.
There exist two versions of the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation, related to the Cartesian and cylindrical geometries of the waves. In this paper we derive and study a new version, related to the elliptic cylindrical geometry. The derivation is given in the context of surface waves, but the derived equation is a universal integrable model applicable to generic weakly-nonlinear weakly-dispersive waves. We also show that there exist nontrivial transformations between all three versions of the KP equation associated with the physical problem formulation, and use them to obtain new classes of appro…
Equivalence is established between a special class of Painleve VI equations parametrized by a conformal dimension $μ$, time dependent Euler top equations, isomonodromic deformations and three-dimensional Frobenius manifolds. The isomodromic tau function and solutions of the Euler top equations are explicitly constructed in terms of Wronskian solutions of the 2-vector 1-constrained symplectic Kadomtsev-Petviashvili (CKP) hierarchy by means of Grassmannian formulation. These Wronskian solutions give rational solutions of the Painleve VI equation for $μ=1,2,{...} $.
