23Na NMR studies of the Na-K eutectic alloy embedded into porous glass with 7 nm pores showed that melting of Na2K confined nanoparticles is a continuous process with smooth changes in the Knight shift of a narrow resonance line and nuclear spin relaxation between those in the crystalline and liquid states. The intermediate state which occurs upon melting is stable and more favorable than the liquid state. The inverse freezing transformation can be sharp as at a first order transition or continuous depending on the initial temperature of cooling. The results suggest revision of theoretical predictions for the melting and freezing transitions in confined geometry.
Computer simulations of contact melting and associated interfacial phenomena in binary eutectic systems were performed on the basis of the standard phase-field model with miscibility gap in solid state. It is shown that the model predicts the existence of equilibrium three-phase (solid-liquid-solid) states above the eutectic temperature, which suggest the explanation of the phenomenon of phase separation in liquid eutectic observed in experiments. The results of simulations provide the interpretation for the phenomena of contact melting and formation of diffusion zone observed in the experimen…
With important application prospects, eutectic high entropy alloys have received extensive attention for their excellent strength and ductility in a large temperature range. The excellent casting characteristics of eutectic high entropy alloys make it possible to achieve well manufacturability of selective laser melting. For the first time, we have achieved crack-free eutectic high entropy alloy fabricated by selective laser melting, which has excellent mechanical properties in a wide temperature range of -196 degrees Celsius~760 degrees Celsius due to ultra-fine eutectic lamellar spacing of 1…
We have performed a thorough examination of the reorientational relaxation dynamics and the ionic charge transport of three typical deep eutectic solvents, ethaline, glyceline and reline by broadband dielectric spectroscopy. Our experiments cover a broad temperature range from the low-viscosity liquid down to the deeply supercooled state, allowing to investigate the significant influence of glassy freezing on the ionic charge transport in these systems. In addition, we provide evidence for a close coupling of the ionic conductivity in these materials to reorientational dipolar motions which sh…
The eutectic Ga-In (EGaIn) alloy has low vapor pressure, low toxicity, high thermal and electrical conductivities, and thus has shown a great potential for smart material applications. For such applications, EGaIn is maintained above its melting point, below which it undergoes solidification and phase separation. A scientific understanding of the structural and compositional evolution during thermal cycling could help further assess the application range of low-melting-point fusible alloys. Here, we use an integrated suite of cryogenically-enabled advanced microscopy & microanalysis to better …

DTA measurements with mixtures of aluminum oxide and lutetium oxide around the 1:1 perovskite composition were performed up to 1970 deg. C. A peak with onset 1901 deg C was due to the melting of the eutectic Lu4Al2O9 (monoclinic phase) and LuAlO3 (perovskite). Neither peritectic melting of the perovskite nor its decomposition in the solid phase could be resolved experimentally. The maximum of the eutectic peak size is near x=0.44, on the Lu-rich side of the perovskite, which is consistent with the conclusion that LuAlO3 melts peritectically at ca. 1907 deg. C as proposed by Wu, Pelton, J. Allo…
The invariance of several structural and dynamical properties of the Lennard-Jones (LJ) system along the freezing and melting lines is interpreted in terms of the isomorph theory. First the freezing/melting lines for LJ system are shown to be approximated by isomorphs. Then we show that the invariants observed along the freezing and melting isomorphs are also observed on other isomorphs in the liquid and crystalline phase. Structure is probed by the radial distribution function and the structure factor and dynamics is probed by the mean-square displacement, the intermediate scattering function…
The high-pressure melting curves of metals provide simple and useful tests for theories of melting, as well as important constraints for the modeling of planetary interiors. Here, we present an experimental technique that reveals the latent heat of fusion of a metal sample compressed inside a diamond anvil cell. The technique combines microsecond-timescale pulsed electrical heating with an internally-heated diamond anvil cell for the first time. Further, we use the technique to measure the melting curve of platinum to the highest pressure measured to date. Melting temperature increases from $\…
We investigate the behavior of hydrated sulfonated polysulfones over a range of ion contents through differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Experimental evidence shows that at comparable ion contents, the spacing between the ionic groups along the polymer backbone can significantly impact the amount of melting water present in the polymer. When we only consider water molecules that can hydrogen bond to four neighboring water molecules as the melting water, the MD simulation results are found to agree wit…
Antifreeze proteins (AFPs) evolved in cold-adapted organisms and serve to protect them against freezing in cold conditions by arresting ice crystal growth. Recently, we have shown quantitatively that adsorption of AFPs not only prevents ice from growing but also from melting. This melting inhibition by AFPs, which results in superheated ice (Celik et al, PNAS 2010), is not a well-known phenomenon. Here we present our recent findings in which the Ca2+ - dependent hyperactive AFP from Marinomonas primoryensis (MpAFP) clearly displays this property. Additionally, we found that an ice crystal that…
Condensation, melting and freezing of nitrogen in a powder of mesoporous silica grains (SBA-15) has been studied by combined volumetric sorption isotherm and scanning calorimetry measurements. Within the mean field model of Saam and Cole for vapor condensation in cylindrical pores a liquid nitrogen sorption isotherm is well described by a bimodal pore radius distribution. It encompasses a narrow peak centered at 3.3 nm, typical of tubular mesopores, and a significantly broader peak characteristic of micropores, located at 1 nm. The material condensed in the micropores as well as the first two …
Lithium-salt-based deep eutectic solvents, where the only cation is Li+, are promising candidates as electrolytes in electrochemical energy-storage devices like batteries. We have performed broadband dielectric spectroscopy on three such systems, covering a broad temperature and dynamic range that extends from the low-viscosity liquid around room temperature down to the glassy state approaching the glass-transition temperature. We detect a relaxational process that can be ascribed to dipolar reorientational dynamics and exhibits the clear signatures of glassy freezing. We find that the tempera…
The unique sub-grain patterns have been found in some particular alloys (316L, Al-Si, Co-Cr-Mo) selective laser melting (SLM), the submicron-scale cellular, elongated cellular or even band structures are always coexisting inside one single macro-solidified grain. Furthermore, the cellular structures are symmetrical with hexagonal, pentagonal and square cellular patterns where the cellular size is only around 1μm. Single-layer and bulk 316L SLM experiments are presented that reveals the forming mechanism of these sub-grain cellular microstructures. Complex cellular sub-micron patterns were form…
Eutectic related reaction is a special chemical/physical reaction involving multiple phases, solid and liquid. Visualization of phase reaction of composite nanomaterials with high spatial and temporal resolution provides a key understanding of alloy growth with important industrial applications. However, it has been a rather challenging task. Here we report the direct imaging and control of the phase reaction dynamics of a single, as-grown free-standing gallium arsenide nanowire encapped with a gold nanoparticle, free from environmental confinement or disturbance, using four-dimensional electr…
Melting and freezing transitions in two dimensional systems are known to show highly unusual characteristics. Most of the earlier studies considered atomic systems; the melting behavior in two dimensional molecular solids is still largely unexplored. In order to understand the role of multiple energy and length scales present in molecular systems on nature of melting transition, here we report computer simulation studies of melting of a two dimensional Mercedes-Benz (MB) system. We find that the interplay between the strength of isotropic and anisotropic interactions can give rise to rich phas…
Kinetics of crystal-growth is investigated along the solid-liquid coexistence line for the (100), (110) and (111) orientations of the Lennard-Jones and Weeks-Chandler-Andersen fcc crystal-liquid interface, using non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations. A slowing down of the growth kinetics along the coexistence line is observed, which is mostly a temperature effect, with other quantities such as the melting pressure and liquid self-diffusion coefficient having a negligible impact. The growth kinetics of the two potentials become similar at large values of the melting temperature and pre…
We apply microcanonical ensemble considerations to suggest that, whenever it may thermalize, a general disorder-free many-body Hamiltonian of a typical atomic system has solid-like eigenstates at low energies and fluid-type (and gaseous, plasma) eigenstates associated with energy densities exceeding those present in the melting (and, respectively, higher energy) transition(s). In particular, the lowest energy density at which the eigenstates of such a clean many body atomic system undergo a non-analytic change is that of the melting (or freezing) transition. We invoke this observation to analy…
Over the ages, efforts have been made to use composite design to reinforce metals and alloys in order to increase their strength and modulus. On the other hand, nature herself improves the strength, ductility, stiffness and toughness of materials by strengthening them with liquids having zero strength/modulus. Here, emulating nature, efforts have been made to develop a new class of tin based alloy/composite with liquid metal reinforcement (LMM). Based on thermodynamic calculations, a composition has been designed such that on melting and casting it forms a solid metal (tin solid solution) and …
Hydrogen exhibits unusual behaviors at megabar pressures, with consequences for planetary science, condensed matter physics and materials science. Experiments at such extreme conditions are challenging, often resulting in hard-to-interpret and controversial observations. We present a theoretical study of the phase diagram of dense hydrogen, using machine learning to overcome time and length scale limitations while describing accurately interatomic forces. We reproduce the re-entrant melting behavior and the polymorphism of the solid phase. In simulations based on the machine learning potential…
