We quantify the density of rational points in the unit sphere $S^n$, proving analogues of the classical theorems on the embedding of $\q^n$ into $\r^n$. Specifically, we prove a Dirichlet theorem stating that every point $α\in S^n$ is sufficiently approximable, the optimality of this approximation via the existence of badly approximable points, and a Khintchine theorem showing that the Lebesgue measure of approximable points is either zero or full depending on the convergence or divergence of a certain sum. These results complement and improve on previous results, particularly recent theorems of Ghosh, Gorodnik and Nevo.
We prove a quantitative theorem for Diophantine approximation by rational points on spheres. Our results are valid for arbitrary unimodular lattices and we further prove 'spiraling' results for the direction of approximates. These results are quantitative generalizations of the Khintchine-type theorem on spheres proved by Kleinbock and Merrill.
We prove an effective estimate for the counting function of Diophantine approximants on the sphere S$^n$. We use homogeneous dynamics on the space of orthogonal lattices, in particular effective equidistribution results and non-divergence estimates for the Siegel transform, developping on recent results of Alam-Ghosh and Kleinbock-Merrill.
Let S be a sphere in R^n such that S\capQ^n\neq\emptyset and let Cl denote the closure operator in the Euclidean topology of R^n. If the center of S is in Q^n, then Cl(S\capQ^n) is S, as is easily proved. If the center of S is not in Q^n, then what is Cl(S\capQ^n)? This question, which was answered partially in the author's paper [Proc. Japan Acad. Ser. A Math. Sci. 80 (2004), no. 7, 146--149], is answered completely in this paper by representing Cl(S\capQ^n) in terms of the group of Q-automorphisms of the algebraic closure of Q(γ_1,...,γ_n) in C, where γ_1,...,γ_n denote the coordinates of th…
We apply Diophantine analysis to classify edge-to-edge tilings of the sphere by congruent almost equilateral quadrilaterals (i.e., edge combination a3b). Parallel to a complete classification by Cheung, Luk and Yan, the method implemented here is more systematic and applicable to other related tiling problems. We also provide detailed geometric data for the tilings.
We show that, if a rational homology 3-sphere $Y$ bounds a positive definite smooth 4-manifold, then there are finitely many negative definite lattices, up to the stable-equivalence, which can be realized as the intersection form of a smooth 4-manifold bounded by $Y$. To this end, we make use of constraints on definite forms bounded by $Y$ induced from Donaldson's diagonalization theorem, and correction term invariants due to Frøyshov, and Ozsváth and Szabó. In particular, we prove that all spherical 3-manifolds satisfy such finiteness property.
Ford circles are parameterized by the rational numbers but are also the result of an iterative geometric procedure. We review this and introduce an apparently new parameterization by solutions of a certain quadratic Diophantine equation. We then generalize to Eisenstein and Gaussian rationals where the resulting "Ford spheres" are also the result of iterative geometric procedures and are also parameterized by solutions of certain quadratic Diophantine equations. We generalize still further to imaginary quadratic fields.
We compute the rational homotopy groups of the $K(n)$-local sphere for all heights $n$ and all primes $p$, verifying a prediction that goes back to the pioneering work of Morava in the early 1970s. More precisely, we show that the inclusion of the Witt vectors into the Lubin-Tate ring induces a split injection on continuous stabilizer cohomology with torsion cokernel of bounded exponent, thereby proving Hopkins' chromatic splitting conjecture and the vanishing conjecture of Beaudry-Goerss-Henn rationally. The key ingredients are the equivalence between the Lubin-Tate tower and the Drinfeld tow…
We study lattice points in d-dimensional spheres, and count their number in thin spherical segments. We found an upper bound depending only on the radius of the sphere and opening angle of the segment. To obtain this bound we slice the segment by hyperplanes of rational direction, and then cover an arbitrary segment with one having rational direction. Diophantine approximation can be used to obtain the best rational direction possible.
In this paper we study a general class of conics starting from a quotient field. We give a group structure over these conics generalizing the construction of a group over the Pell hyperbola. Furthermore, we generalize the definition of Rédei rational functions in order to use them for evaluating powers of points over these conics. Finally, we study rational approximations of irrational numbers over conics, obtaining a new result for the approximation of quadratic irrationalities.
Let $b \ge 2$ and $\ell \ge 1$ be integers. We establish that there is an absolute real number $K$ such that all the partial quotients of the rational number $$ \prod_{h = 0}^\ell \, (1 - b^{-2^h}), $$ of denominator $b^{2^{\ell+1} - 1}$, do not exceed $\exp(K (\log b)^2 \sqrt{\ell} 2^{\ell/2})$.
We introduce an analog of Bianchi groups for rational quaternion algebras and use it to construct sphere packings that are analogs of the Apollonian circle packing known as integral crystallographic packings.
This note describes continued fraction representations for the rational approximations to the zeta function recently found by the author. It is tempting to think that these continued fractions might be analysed using a souped up version of the Worpitzky argument so as to produce zero-free regions for the approximations.
