We design high quality factor photonic crystal nanobeam cavities formed by two mechanically isolated cantilevers. These "split-beam" cavities have a physical gap at the center, allowing mechanical excitations of one or both of the cavity halves. They are designed by analyzing the optical band structures and mode profiles of waveguides perforated by elliptical holes and rectangular gaps, and are predicted to support optical resonances with quality factors exceeding 1E6 at wavelengths of ~ 1.6 um.
Photonic nanocavities are a key component in many applications because of their capability of trapping and storing photons and enhancing interactions of light with various functional materials and structures. The maximal number of photons that can be stored in silicon photonic cavities is limited by the free-carrier and thermo-optic effects at room temperature. To reduce such effects, we performed the first experimental study of optical nonlinearities in ultrahigh-Q silicon disk nanocavities at cryogenic temperatures in a superfluid helium environment. At elevated input power, the cavity trans…
Ga$_{0.51}$In$_{0.49}$P is a promising candidate for thermally tunable nanophotonic devices due to its low thermal conductivity. In this work we study its thermo-optical response. We obtain the linear thermo-optical coefficient $dn/dT=2.0\pm0.3\cdot 10^{-4}\,\rm{K}^{-1}$ by investigating the transmission properties of a single mode-gap photonic crystal nanocavity.
We experimentally demonstrated high quality factors (Q-factors) of nanocavities in three-dimensional photonic crystals by increasing the in-plane area of the structure. Entire structures made of GaAs were fabricated by a micro-manipulation technique, and the nanocavities contained InAs self-assembled quantum dots that emitted near-infrared light. The obtained Q-factor was improved to 93,000, which is 2.4-times larger than that in a previous report of a three-dimensional photonic crystal nanocavity. Due to this large Q-factor, we successfully observed a lasing oscillation from this cavity mode.
Photonic crystal nanocavities at visible wavelengths are fabricated in a high refractive index (n>3.2) gallium phosphide membrane. The cavities are probed via a cross-polarized reflectivity measurement and show resonances at wavelengths as low as 645 nm at room temperature, with quality factors between 500 and 1700 for modes with volumes 0.7(lambda/n)^3. These structures could be employed for submicron scale optoelectronic devices in the visible, and for coupling to novel emitters with resonances in the visible such as nitrogen vacancy centers, and bio- and organic molecules.
Energy-efficient optical control of photonic device properties is crucial for diverse photonic signal processing. Here we demonstrate extremely efficient optical tuning of photonic nanocavities, with only photon-level optical energy. With a lithium niobate photonic crystal nanocavity with an optical Q up to 1.41 million and an effective mode volume down to 0.78$(λ/n)^3$, we are able to achieve a resonance tuning rate of about 88.4~MHz/photon (0.67~GHz/aJ), which allows us to tune across the whole cavity resonance with only about 2.4 photons on average inside the cavity. Such a photon-level res…
We demonstrate second harmonic generation in photonic crystal nanocavities fabricated in the semiconductor gallium phosphide. We observe second harmonic radiation at 750 nm with input powers of only nanowatts coupled to the cavity and conversion efficiency $P_{\rm out}/P_{\rm in, coupled}^2 = 430%/{\rm W}$. The large electronic band gap of GaP minimizes absorption loss, allowing efficient conversion. Our results are promising for integrated, low-power light sources and on-chip reduction of input power in other nonlinear processes.
We propose a method to generate path-entangled $N00N$-state photons from quantum dots (QDs) and coupled nanocavities. In the systems we considered, cavity mode frequencies are tuned close to the biexciton two-photon resonance. Under appropriate conditions, the system can have the target $N00N$ state in the energy eigenstate, as a consequence of destructive quantum interference. The $N00N$ state can be generated by the resonant laser excitation. This method, first introduced for two-photon $N00N$ state ($N=2$), can be extended toward higher $N00N$ state ($N>2$) based on our recipe, which is app…
We propose and experimentally demonstrate a photonic crystal nanocavity with multiple resonances that can be tuned nearly independently. The design is composed of two orthogonal intersecting nanobeam cavities. Experimentally, we measure cavity quality factors of 6,600 and 1000 for resonances separated by 382 nm; we measure a maximum separation between resonances of 506 nm. These structures are promising for enhancing efficiency in nonlinear optical processes such as sum/difference frequency and stimulated Raman scattering.
We demonstrate photonic crystal nanobeam cavities that support both TE- and TM-polarized modes, each with a Quality factor greater than one million and a mode volume on the order of the cubic wavelength. We show that these orthogonally polarized modes have a tunable frequency separation and a high nonlinear spatial overlap. We expect these cavities to have a variety of applications in resonance-enhanced nonlinear optics.
We report on the design, fabrication and optical characterization of bichromatic photonic crystal cavities in thin silicon membranes, with resonances around 1550 nm wavelength. The cavity designs are based on a recently proposed photonic crystal implementation of the Aubry-André-Harper bichromatic potential, which relies on the superposition of two one-dimensional lattices with non-integer ratio between the periodicity constants. In photonic crystal nanocavities, this confinement mechanism is such that optimized figures of merit can be straightforwardly achieved, in particular an ultra-high-Q …
We present a theoretical study of dielectric bowtie cavities and show that they are governed by two essentially different confinement regimes. The first is confinement inside the bulk dielectric and the second is a local lightning-rod regime where the field is locally enhanced at sharp corners and may yield a vanishing mode volume without necessarily enhancing the mode inside the bulk dielectric. We show that while the bulk regime is reminiscent of the confinement in conventional nanocavities, the most commonly used definition of the mode volume gauges in fact the lightning-rod effect when app…
We examine the cavity resonance tuning of high-Q silicon photonic crystal heterostructures by localized laser-assisted thermal oxidation using a 532 nm continuous wave laser focused to a 2.5 mm radius spot-size. The total shift is consistent with the parabolic rate law. A tuning range of up to 8.7 nm is achieved with ~ 30 mW laser powers. Over this tuning range, the cavity Q decreases from 3.2\times10^5 to 1.2\times10^5. Numerical simulations model the temperature distributions in the silicon photonic crystal membrane and the cavity resonance shift from oxidation.
Photonic crystal (PhC) nanocavities have demonstrated unique capabilities in terms of light confinement and manipulation. As such, they are becoming attractive for the design of novel resonance-based photonic integrated circuits (PICs). Here two essential challenges arise however - how to realize ultrahigh-Q PhC cavities using standard fabrication processes compatible with large volume fabrication, and how to efficiently integrate them with other standard building blocks, available in exiting PIC platforms. In this work, we demonstrate ultrahigh-Q 1D PhC nanocavities fabricated on a 300 mm SOI…
Single-crystal diamond, with its unique optical, mechanical and thermal properties, has emerged as a promising material with applications in classical and quantum optics. However, the lack of heteroepitaxial growth and scalable fabrication techniques remain major limiting factors preventing more wide-spread development and application of diamond photonics. In this work, we overcome this difficulty by adapting angled-etching techniques, previously developed for realization of diamond nanomechanical resonators, to fabricate racetrack resonators and photonic crystal cavities in bulk single-crysta…
Using Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) simulation, we show that ultrahigh- Q nanocavities can be obtained through the manipulation of a single semiconductor nanowire (NW) inside a slot in a line defect of a two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal. By controlling the design and its lattice parameters of the photonic crystal, we have achieved a quality factor Q larger than 106 and a mode volume Vc smaller than 0.11 μm3 (1.25 of a cubic wavelength in the NW) for a cavity peak in the telecommunication band. This design is useful for realizing a position-controlled cavity in a photonic crystal. H…
We investigate the nonlinear optical response of suspended 1D photonic crystal nanocavities fabricated on a silicon nitride chip. Strong thermo-optical nonlinearities are demonstrated for input powers as low as $2\,μ\text{W}$ and a self-sustained pulsing regime is shown to emerge with periodicity of several seconds. As the input power and laser wavelength are varied the temporal patterns change in period, duty cycle and shape. This dynamics is attributed to the multiple timescale competition between thermo-optical and thermo-optomechanical effects and closely resembles the relaxation oscillati…
We investigate the use of guided modes bound to defects in photonic crystals for achieving double resonances. Photoluminescence enhancement by more than three orders of magnitude has been observed when the excitation and emission wavelengths are simultaneously in resonance with the localized guided mode and cavity mode, respectively. We find that the localized guided modes are relatively insensitive to the size of the defect for one of the polarizations, allowing for flexible control over the wavelength combinations. This double resonance technique is expected to enable enhancement of photolum…
Photonic crystal membranes (PCM) provide a versatile planar platform for on-chip implementations of photonic quantum circuits. One prominent quantum element is a coupled system consisting of a nanocavity and a single quantum dot (QD) which forms a fundamental building block for elaborate quantum information networks and a cavity quantum electrodynamic (cQED) system controlled by single photons. So far no fast tuning mechanism is available to achieve control within the system coherence time. Here we demonstrate dynamic tuning by monochromatic coherent acoustic phonons formed by a surface acoust…
We observe the weak coupling of lead sulphide nanocrystals to localized defect modes of 2-dimensional silicon nanocavities. Cavity resonances characterized with ensemble nanocrystals are verified with cold-cavity measurements using integrated waveguides. Polarization dependence of the cavity field modes is observed. The linewidths measured in coupling experiments are broadened in comparison to the cold-cavity characterization, partly due to large homogeneous linewidths of the nanocrystals. The calculated Purcell factor for a single exciton is 75, showing promise toward applications in single p…
The spectra of two-dimensional photonic crystal slab nanocavities with embedded InAs quantum dots are measured by photoluminescence and reflectance. In comparing the spectra taken by these two different methods, consistency with the nanocavities' resonant wavelengths is found. Furthermore, it is shown that the reflectance method can measure both active and passive cavities. Q-factors of nanocavities, whose resonant wavelengths range from 1280 to 1620 nm, are measured by the reflectance method in cross polarization. Experimentally, Q-factors decrease for longer wavelengths and the intensity, re…
We observe experimentally optical bistability enhanced through Fano interferences in high-Q localized silicon photonic crystal resonances (Q ~ 30,000 and modal volume ~ 0.98 cubic wavelengths). This phenomenon is analyzed through nonlinear coupled-mode formalism, including the interplay of chi(3) effects such as two-photon absorption and related free-carrier dynamics, and optical Kerr as well as thermal effects and linear losses. Our experimental and theoretical results demonstrate for the first time Fano-resonance based bistable states with switching thresholds of 185 micro-Watt and 4.5 fJ in…
Lithium niobate (LN) exhibits unique material characteristics that have found many important applications. Scaling LN devices down to a nanoscopic scale can dramatically enhance light-matter interaction that would enable nonlinear and quantum photonic functionalities beyond the reach of conventional means. However, developing LN-based nanophotonic devices turns out to be nontrivial. Although significant efforts have been devoted in recent years, LN photonic crystal structures developed to date exhibit fairly low quality. Here we demonstrate LN photonic crystal nanobeam resonators with optical …
Solid-state single-quantum emitters are a crucial resource for on-chip photonic quantum technologies and require efficient cavity-emitter coupling to realize quantum networks beyond the single-node level. Previous approaches to enhance light-matter interactions rely on forming nanocavities around randomly located quantum dots or color centers but lack spatial control of the quantum emitter itself that is required for scaling. Here we demonstrate a deterministic approach to achieve Purcell-enhancement at lithographically defined locations using the sharp corner of a metal nanocube for both elec…
An H1 photonic crystal nanocavity is based on a single point defect and has eigenmodes with a variety of symmetric features. Thus, it is a promising building block for photonic tight-binding lattice systems that can be used in studies on condensed matter, non-Hermitian and topological physics. However, improving its radiative quality ($Q$) factor has been considered challenging. Here, we report the design of a hexapole mode of an H1 nanocavity with a $Q$ factor exceeding $10^8$. We achieved such extremely high-$Q$ conditions by designing only four structural modulation parameters thanks to the…
Stochastic computing allows a drastic reduction in hardware complexity using serial processing of bit streams. While the induced high computing latency can be overcome using integrated optics technology, the design of realistic optical stochastic computing architectures calls for energy efficient switching devices. We demonstrate a nonlinear photomodulation spectroscopy method to image the mode profile of a high-Q photonic crystal resonator (PhCR). This far-field imaging method is suitable for ultrahigh-Q cavities which we demonstrate on a Q = 619000 PhCR. We scan the PhCR surface with a 405 nm pump beam that modulates the refractive index by local thermal tuning, while probing the response of the resonance. We enhance resolution by probing at high power, using the thermo-optical nonlinearity of the PhCR. Spatial resolution of the thermo-optical effect is typically constrained by the broad thermal profil…
We provide a numerical study showing that a bottom reflector is indispensable to achieve unidirectional emission from a photonic-crystal (PhC) nanolaser. First, we study a PhC slab nanocavity suspended over a flat mirror formed by a dielectric or metal substrate. We find that the laser's vertical emission can be enhanced by more than a factor of six compared with the device in the absence of the mirror. Then, we study the situation where the PhC nanocavity is in contact with a flat metal surface. The underlying metal substrate may serve as both an electrical current pathway and a heat sink, wh…
We present a method to analyze the suitability of particular photonic cavity designs for information exchange between arbitrary superposition states of a quantum emitter and the near-field photonic cavity mode. As an illustrative example, we consider whether quantum dot emitters embedded in "L3" and "H1" photonic crystal cavities are able to transfer a spin superposition state to a confined photonic superposition state for use in quantum information transfer. Using an established dyadic Green's function (DGF) analysis, we describe methods to calculate coupling to arbitrary quantum emitter posi…

Strongly enhanced third-harmonic generation (THG) by the topological localization of an edge mode in a Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chain of silicon photonic crystal nanocavities is demonstrated. The edge mode of the nanocavity chain not only naturally inherits resonant properties of the single nanocavity, but also exhibits the topological feature with mode robustness extending well beyond individual nanocavity. By engineering the SSH nanocavities with alternating strong and weak coupling strengths on a silicon slab, we observe the edge mode formation that entails a THG signal with three orders …
Strong coupling between light and matter is the foundation of promising quantum photonic devices such as deterministic single photon sources, single atom lasers and photonic quantum gates, which consist of an atom and a photonic cavity. Unlike atom-based systems, a strong coupling unit based on an emitter-plasmonic nanocavity system has the potential to bring these devices to the microchip scale at ambient conditions. However, efficiently and precisely positioning a single or a few emitters into a plasmonic nanocavity is challenging. In addition, placing a strong coupling unit on a designated …
Nanoparticle-on-mirror plasmonic nanocavities, capable of extreme optical confinement and enhancement, have triggered state-of-the-art progress in nanophotonics and development of applications in enhanced spectroscopies and molecular detection. However, the optical quality factor and thus performance of these nanoconstructs are undermined by the granular polycrystalline metal films used as a mirror. Here, we report an atomically smooth single-crystalline platform for low-loss nanocavities using chemically-synthesized gold microflakes as a mirror. Nanocavities constructed using gold nanorods on…

The coupling between multiple nanocavities in close vicinity leads to hybridization of their modes. Stacked Metal/Insulator/Metal (MIM) nanocavities constitute a highly versatile and very interesting model system to study and engineer such mode coupling, since they can be realized by lithography-free fabrication methods with fine control on the optical and geometrical parameters. The resonant modes of such MIM cavities are epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) resonances, which are appealing for non-linear photophysics and a variety of applications. Here we study the hybridization of ENZ resonances in MIMIM…
Scanning Near-field Optical Microscopy (SNOM) has been successful in finely tuning the optical properties of photonic crystal (PC) nanocavities. The SNOM nanoprobes proposed so far allowed for either redshifting or blueshifting the resonance peak of the PC structures. In this Letter, we theoretically demonstrate the possibility of redshifting (up to +0.65nm) and blueshifting (up to $-5$~nm) PC cavity resonance with a single SNOM probe. This probe is obtained by opening a bowtie-aperture nano-antenna (BNA) at the apex of a metal-coated tip. This double-way PC tunability is the result of a compe…
We report on lasing at room temperature and at telecommunications wavelength from photonic crystal nanocavities based on InAsP/InP quantum dots. Such laser cavities with a small modal volume and high quality factor display a high spontaneous emission coupling factor beta. Lasing is confirmed by measuring the second order autocorrelation function. A smooth transition from chaotic to coherent emission is observed, and coherent emission is obtained at 8 times the threshold power.
Enhancing magneto-optical effects is crucial for size reduction of key photonic devices based on non-reciprocal propagation of light and to enable active nanophotonics. We disclose a so far unexplored approach that exploits dark plasmons to produce an unprecedented amplification of magneto-optical activity. We designed and fabricated non-concentric magnetoplasmonic-disk/plasmonic-ring-resonator nanocavities supporting multipolar dark modes. The broken geometrical symmetry of the design enables coupling with free-space light and hybridization of dark modes of the ring nanoresonator with the dip…
In the past decade, advances in nanotechnology have led to the development of plasmonic nanocavities which facilitate light-matter strong coupling in ambient conditions. The most robust example is the nanoparticle-on-mirror (NPoM) structure whose geometry is controlled with subnanometer precision. The excited plasmons in such nanocavities are extremely sensitive to the exact morphology of the nanocavity, giving rise to unexpected optical behaviors. So far, most theoretical and experimental studies on such nanocavities have been based solely on their scattering and absorption properties. Howeve…
Second-order nonlinear effects, such as second-harmonic generation, can be strongly enhanced in nanofabricated photonic materials when both fundamental and harmonic frequencies are spatially and temporally confined. Practically designing low-volume and doubly resonant nanoresonators in conventional semiconductor compounds is challenging owing to their intrinsic refractive index dispersion. In this work we review a recently developed strategy to design doubly resonant nanocavities with low mode volume and large quality factor by localized defects in a photonic crystal structure. Our results clarify the relative contributions and evolution of the mechanisms, and demonstrate the lasing and shutdown thresholds. Our stu…
Deterministic coupling of single solid-state emitters to nanocavities is the key for integrated quantum information devices. We here fabricate a photonic crystal cavity around a preselected single silicon-vacancy color center in diamond and demonstrate modification of the emitters internal population dynamics and radiative quantum efficiency. The controlled, room-temperature cavity coupling gives rise to a resonant Purcell enhancement of the zero-phonon transition by a factor of 19, coming along with a 2.5-fold reduction of the emitter's lifetime.
Optical nanocavities for coherent interfaces usually have their electric field maximum at the center point, which normally benefits interactions with small local quantum emitters. Here, we propose a partial thickness modulation on 2D slab photonic crystal cavities for a cratered cavity mode function to improve nonlocal interactions. The thickness modulation is applied around the central region, and has little effect on the fringe electric field, which determines the coupling to waveguides or other cavities. Furthermore, the partial modulation enhances the cratered electric field at positions t…
Arrays of photonic cavities are relevant structures for developing large-scale photonic integrated circuits and for investigating basic quantum electrodynamics phenomena, due to the photon hopping between interacting nanoresonators.
