The Higgs-like signal observed at the LHC could be due to several mass degenerate resonances. We show that the number of resonances is related to the rank of a "production and decay" matrix, $R_{if}$. Each entry in this matrix contains the observed rate in a particular production mode $i$ and final state $f$. In the case of $N$ non-interfering resonances, the rank of $R$ is, at most, $N$. If interference plays a role, the maximum rank is $N^2$ or in the CP limit $N(N+1)/2$. As an illustration we use the present experimental data to constrain the rank of the corresponding matrix. We estimate the LHC reach of probing two and three resonances under various speculations on future measurements and uncertainties.
The observed Higgs boson signals to-date could be due to having two quasi-degenerate 125 GeV scalar states in Nature. This kind of scenario tallies well with the predictions from the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM). We have analysed the phenomenological NMSSM Higgs boson couplings and derived a parameterization of the signal strengths within the two quasi-degenerate framework. With essentially two parameters, it is shown that the combined strengths of the two quasi-degenerate Higgs states in the leptonic (and b-quark) decay channels depart from the Standard Model values i…
We discuss a scenario of the type-II 2HDM in which the $b\bar{b}γγ$ rate of the Higgs pair production is enhanced due to the two nearly degenerate 125 GeV Higgs bosons ($h$, $H$). Considering various theoretical and experimental constraints, we figure out the allowed ranges of the trilinear couplings of these two Higgs bosons and calculate the signal rate of $b\bar{b}γγ$ from the productions of Higgs pairs ($hh$, $hH$, $HH$) at the LHC. We find that in the allowed parameter space some trilinear Higgs couplings can be larger than the SM value by an order and the production rate of $b\bar{b}γγ$ …
More than one Higgs boson may be present near the currently discovered Higgs mass, which can not be properly resolved due to the limitations in the intrinsic energy resolution at the Large Hadron Collider. We investigated the scenarios where two $CP$-even Higgs bosons are degenerate in mass. To correctly predict the Higgs signatures, quantum interference effects between the two Higgs bosons must be taken into account, which, however, has been often neglected in the literature. We carried out a global analysis including the interference effects for a variety of Higgs searching channels at the L…
We examine the implication of the 750 GeV diphoton resonance on the two-Higgs-doublet model imposing various theoretical and experimental constraints. The production rate of two-Higgs-doublet model is smaller than the cross section observed at the LHC by two order magnitude. In order to accommodate the 750 GeV diphoton resonance, we extend the two-Higgs-doublet model by introducing additional Higgs fields, and focus on two different extensions, an inert complex Higgs triplet and a real scalar septuplet. With the 125 GeV Higgs being agreement with the observed data, the production rate for the …
Using the likelihood ratio test statistic, we present a method which can be employed to test the hypothesis of a single Higgs boson using the matrix of measured signal strengths. This method can be applied in the presence of incomplete data and takes into account uncertainties on the measurements. The p-value against the hypothesis of a single Higgs boson is defined from the expected distribution of the test statistic, generated using pseudo-experiments. The applicability of the likelihood-based test is demonstrated using numerical examples with uncertainties and missing matrix elements.
The scenario of two mass-degenerate Higgs bosons within the general two-Higgs-doublet model (2HDM) is revisited. We focus on the global picture when two $CP$-even Higgs bosons of $h$ and $H$ are nearly mass-degenerate. A global fit to the signal strength of the 125 GeV Higgs measured at the LHC is performed. Based on the best-fit result of the 2HDM mixing angles $(α,β)$, theoretical constraints, charged and $CP$-odd Higgs boson direct search constraints and the electroweak precision constraints are imposed to the 2HDM parameter space. We present the signal predictions of the $(4b\,, 2b\,2γ)$ c…
The Higgs resonance shape in gluon fusion: Heavy Higgs effects
Higgs Boson Phenomenology in a Simple Model with Vector Resonances
We investigate rare decays of Higgs via exchange of two almost degenerate heavy on-shell Majorana neutrinos $N_j$ ($j=1,2$): $Γ_{\pm} = Γ(h \to ν_k N_j \to ν_k \ell^{\pm} π^{\mp})$, and into the open quark channels $Γ_{\pm} = Γ(h \to ν_k N_j \to ν_k \ell^{\pm} U D)$, where $U D$ are two jets of open quarks (${\bar U} D$, or $U {\bar D}$, where $U=u, c$ and $D=d, s$). The related CP violation asymmetry $A_{\rm CP} = (Γ_{-} - Γ_{+})/(Γ_{-} + Γ_{+})$ is studied in detail. We take into account the $N_1$-$N_2$ overlap and oscillation effects. We can see that for certain, presently acceptable, range…
We chose the $μ$-term extended next-to-minimal supersymmetric standard model ($μ$NMSSM) for this work, and the phenomenological research is based on the assumption of double Higgs resonance state as the Standard Model (SM)-like Higgs considering the recent $(g-2)_μ$ result. The study also take into account a variety of experimental results, including direct detection of dark matter (DM) and searching results for sparticles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We study the characteristic of DM confronted with limitations of direct detection experiments. Following that, we concentrate on the prop…
The presence of two light higgsinos nearly degenerate in mass is one of the important characteristics of suspersymmetric models meeting the naturalness criteria. Probing such higgsinos at the LHC is very challenging, in particular when the mass-splitting between them is less than 5 GeV. In this study, we analyze such a degenerate higgsino scenario by exploiting the high collinearity between the two muons which originate from the decay of the heavier higgsino into the lighter one and which are accompanied by a high-$p_T$ QCD jet. Using our method, we can achieve a statistical significance $\sim…
We propose a noncommutative (NC) version for a global O(2) scalar field theory, whose damping feature is introduced into the scalar field theory through the NC parameter. In this context, we investigate how noncommutative drives spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) and Higgs-Kibble mechanisms and how the damping feature workout. Indeed, we show that the noncommutativity plays an important role in such mechanisms, i.e., the Higgs mass and VEV dependent on NC parameter. After that, it is explored the consequences of noncommutativity dependence of Higgs mass and VEV: for the first, it is shown tha…
We investigate, within the type-II two-Higgs-doublet extension of the standard model (SM), the impact of heavy neutral Higgs boson resonances with unsuppressed Yukawa couplings to top quarks on top-quark pair production at the LHC at next-to-leading order (NLO) in the strong coupling constant. We take into account the resonant Higgs boson contributions, the non-resonant SM $t\bar{t}$ continuum and the interference of these two contributions. The NLO QCD corrections to heavy Higgs production and the interference contributions are calculated in the large top-quark mass ($m_t$) limit, including a…
We discuss the sensitivity of a 100 TeV $pp$ collider to heavy resonances produced in longitudinal vector boson scattering and decaying to a pair of Higgs bosons. A Monte Carlo study has been performed using the $H \to ττ$ decay channel for both Higgs bosons, comparing the kinematics of such a signal to the irreducible Standard Model backgrounds. The results are presented in the context of a phenomenological model of a resonance ($η$) coupling to goldstone modes, $V_L V_L \to η\to HH$, as can arise in composite Higgs models. With a fractional width of 70% (20%), the $5 σ$ discovery reach is 4.…
A plausible explanation of the recent experimental indication of a resonance in the two-photon spectrum at LHC is that it corresponds to the CP-odd Higgs boson. We explore such a possibility in a generic framework of the two Higgs doublet models (2HDM), and combine $m_A \approx 750$GeV with the known $m_h =125.7(4)$~GeV to show that the charged Higgs boson and the other CP-even scalar masses become bounded from bellow and from above. We show that this possibility is also consistent with the electroweak precision data and the low energy observables, which we test in a few leptonic and semilepto…
The resonance-continuum interference is usually neglected when the width of a resonance is small compared to the resonance mass. We re-examine this standard by studying the interference effects in high-resolution decay channels, $γγ$ and $ZZ$, of the heavy Higgs boson $H^0$ in nearly aligned two-Higgs-doublet models. For the $H^0$ with a sub-percent width-to-mass ratio, we find that, in the parameter space where the LHC 14 TeV $ZZ$ resonance search can be sensitive, the interference effects can modify the $ZZ$ signal rate by ${\cal O}(10)\%$ and the exclusion reach by ${\cal O}(10)$ GeV. In ot…
Composite Higgs models are an intriguing scenario in which the Higgs particle is identified as a pseudo Nambu-Goldstone boson associated with spontaneous breaking of some global symmetry above the electroweak scale. They would predict new resonances at high energy scales, some of which can appear at multi-TeV scales. In such a case, analogies with pion physics in QCD that a sizable phase shift is predicted in pion-pion scattering processes might help us to evaluate scales of the resonances. In this paper, we discuss two complementary approaches to investigate the compositeness scale in minimal …
We propose a new search strategy for higgsinos. Assuming associated production of higgsino-like pairs with a $W$ or $Z$ boson, we search in the missing energy plus hadronically-tagged vector boson channel. We place sensitivity limits for (HL-)LHC searches assuming $\mathcal{O}({1\mathrm{-}3.5}~\mathrm{GeV})$ mass differences between the lightest neutral and charged states. We point out that using the $E_T^\mathrm{miss}$ distribution significantly increases the sensitivity of this search. We find the higgsinos up to 110 (210) GeV can be excluded with $139~(300)~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ data. The full …
We explore the possibility of explaining the recent $\sim 750$ GeV excesses observed by ATLAS and CMS in the $γγ$ spectrum in the context of a compelling theory of Naturalness. The potential spin-zero resonance responsible for the excesses also requires the existence of new heavy charged states. We show that both such features are naturally realized in a see-saw Composite Higgs model for EWSB, where the new pseudo-Goldstone bosons are expected to be comparatively heavier than the SM Higgs, and the new fermions have masses in the TeV range. If confirmed, the existence of this new resonance coul…
We consider the Higgs potential in generalizations of the Standard Model. The possibility of the potential to develop two almost degenerate minima is explored. This would imply that QCD matter at two distinct sets of quark masses is relevant for astrophysics and cosmology. If in the exotic minimum the QCD matter ground state is electromagnetically neutral, dark matter may consist of QCD matter and antimatter in bubbles of the Higgs field. We predict an abundance of gamma rays in the few MeV region as messengers of dark matter regions in space. In addition the ratio of dark matter to normal mat…
Based on the weak coupling expansion of gravity, we calculate the gravitational contributions to yukawa coupling, scalar quartic coupling as well as gauge couplings with general Landau-DeWitt gauge-fixing choice and a gauge preserving (of SM gauge group) cut off regularization scheme. We find that the results depend on the Landau-DeWitt gauge-fixing parameter. Based on the two loop RGE of SM couplings with one loop full gravitational contributions in harmonic gauge, we study the constraints on the higgs and top quark mass from the requirement of existing the other degenerate vacua at the Planc…
We provide a non-linear realisation of composite Higgs models in the context of the SU(4)/Sp(4) symmetry breaking pattern, where the effective Lagrangian of the spin-0 and spin-1 resonances is constructed via the CCWZ prescription using the Hidden Symmetry formalism. We investigate the EWPT constraints by accounting the effects from reduced Higgs couplings and integrating out heavy spin-1 resonances. This theory emerges from an underlying theory of gauge interactions with fermions, thus first principle lattice results predict the massive spectrum in composite Higgs models. This model can be us…
We consider a scenario of a composite Higgs arising from a strong sector. We assume that the lowest lying composite states are the Higgs scalar doublet and a massive vector triplet, whose dynamics below the compositeness scale are described in terms of an effective Lagrangian. Electroweak symmetry breaking takes place through a vacuum expectation value just as in the Standard Model, but with the vector resonances strongly coupled to the Higgs field. We determine the constraints on this scenario imposed by (i) the Higgs diphoton decay rate, (ii) the electroweak precision tests and (iii) searche…
In this work, we investigate the degenerate heavy Higgs bosons in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (NMSSM) by introducing vector-like particles. Such an extension is well motivated from the top-down view since some grand unified theories usually predict the existence of singlet scalars and vector-like particles at weak scale. Under the constraints from the LHC and dark matter experiments, we find that (1) the null results of searching for high mass resonances have tightly constrained the parameter space; (2) two degenerate heavy singlet Higgs bosons $h_2$ and $a_1$ can sizably…
We compute the 1-loop correction to the electroweak observables from spin-1 resonances in SO(5)/SO(4) composite Higgs models. The strong dynamics is modeled with an effective description comprising the Nambu-Goldstone bosons and the lowest-lying spin-1 resonances. A classification is performed of the relevant operators including custodially-breaking effects from the gauging of hypercharge. The 1-loop contribution of the resonances is extracted in a diagrammatic approach by matching to the low-energy theory of Nambu-Goldstone bosons. We find that the correction is numerically important in a sig…
We report computations of the production cross-section of longitudinal electroweak and Higgs boson pairs within Effective Field Theory for the Electroweak sector (including the Higgs). We have recently reported theoretical studies of gauge boson-gauge boson and Higgs-Higgs resonance production with various quantum numbers. We are now focusing on gauge boson-Higgs boson two-body axial-vector resonances and show a typical cross section. At last, we point out that photon-photon production has also been studied (in $e^-e^+$ as well as pp machines), as this is a very clean process allowing access t…
We examine a simple Composite Higgs Model (CHM) with vector resonances in addition to the Standard Model (SM) fields in perturbation theory by using the $K$-matrix method to implement unitarity constraints. We find that the $W_LW_L$ scattering amplitude has an additional scalar pole (analogous to the $σ$ meson of QCD) as in generic strongly interacting extensions of the SM. The mass and width of this dynamically generated scalar resonance are large and the mass behaves contrary to the vector one, so that when the vector resonance is lighter, the scalar one is heavier, and vice versa. We also a…
