We study theoretically the dipole-dipole interaction and energy transfer in a hybrid system consisting of a quantum dot and graphene nanodisk embedded in a nonlinear photonic crystal. In our model a probe laser field is applied to measure the energy transfer between the quantum dot and graphene nanodisk while a control field manipulates the energy transfer process. These fields create excitons in the quantum dot and surface plasmon polaritons in the graphene nanodisk which interact via the dipole-dipole interaction. Here the nonlinear photonic crystal acts as a tunable photonic reservoir for the quantum dot, and is used to control the energy transfer. We have found that the spectrum of power absorption in the quantum dot has two peaks due to the creation of two dressed excitons in the presence of the dipole-dipole interaction. The energy transfer rate spectrum of the graphene nanodisk also has two peaks due to the absorption of these two dressed excitons. Additionally, energy transfer between the quantum dot and the graphene nanodisk can be switched on and off by applying a pump laser to the photonic crystal or by adjusting the strength of the dipole-dipole interaction. We show that the intensity and frequencies of the peaks in the energy transfer rate spectra can be modified by changing the number of graphene monolayers in the nanodisk or the separation between the quantum dot and graphene. Our results agree with existing experiments on a qualitative basis. The principle of our system can be employed to fabricate nano-biosensors, optical nano-switches, and energy transfer devices.

We study localized plasmonic excitations in bilayer graphene (BLG) nanodisks, comparing AA-stacked and AB-stacked BLG and contrasting the results to the case of two monolayers without electronic hybridization. The electrodynamic response of the BLG electron gas is described in terms of a spatially homogeneous surface conductivity, and an efficient alternative two-dimensional electrostatic approach is employed to carry out all the numerical calculations of plasmon resonances. Due to a unique electronic band structures, the resonance frequency of the traditional dipolar plasmonic mode in the AA-…
Localized surface plasmons are confined collective oscillations of electrons in metallic nanoparticles. When driven by light, the optical response is dictated by geometrical parameters and the dielectric environment and plasmons are therefore extremely important for sensing applications. Plasmons in graphene disks have the additional benefit to be highly tunable via electrical stimulation. Mechanical vibrations create structural deformations in ways where the excitation of localized surface plasmons can be strongly modulated. We show that the spectral shift in such a scenario is determined by …
We investigate the ground-state properties of triangular graphene nanoflakes with zigzag edge configurations. The description of zero-dimensional nanostructures requires accurate many-body techniques since the widely used density-functional theory with local density approximation or Hartree-Fock methods cannot handle the strong quantum fluctuations. Applying the unbiased density-matrix renormalization group algorithm we calculate the magnetization and entanglement patterns with high accuracy for different interaction strengths and compare them to the mean-field results. With the help of quantu…
Engineering light-matter interactions up to the strong-coupling regime at room temperature is one of the cornerstones of modern nanophotonics. Achieving this goal will enable new platforms for potential applications such as quantum information processing, quantum light sources and even quantum metrology. Materials like transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) and in particular tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$) possess large transition dipole moments comparable to semiconductor-based quantum dots, and strong exciton binding energies allowing the detailed exploration of light-matter interactions at roo…
Light-matter interactions at the nanoscale constitute a fundamental ingredient for engineering applications in nanophotonics and quantum optics. To this regard electromagnetic Mie resonances excited in high-refractive index dielectric nanoparticles have recently attracted interest because of their lower losses and better control over the scattering patterns compared to their plasmonic metallic counterparts. The emergence of several resonances in those systems results in an overall high complexity, where the electric and magnetic dipoles have significant overlap in the case of spherical symmetr…
We investigate the energy spectrum, wave functions, and local density of states of an electrical dipole placed on a sheet of gapped graphene as function of the charge strength Zα for different sizes of the dipole and for different regularization parameters. The dipole is modeled as consisting of a positive and negative charge. Bound states are found within the gap region with some energy levels that anticross and others that cross as function of the impurity strength Zα. The anticrossings are more pronounced and move to higher charges Zα when the length of the dipole decreases. These energy le…
Electrically tunable graphene plasmons are anticipated to enable strong light-matter interactions with resonant quantum emitters. However, plasmon resonances in graphene are typically limited to infrared frequencies, below those of optical excitations in robust quantum light sources and many biologically interesting molecules. Here we propose to utilize near fields generated by the plasmon-assisted nonlinear optical response of nanostructured graphene to resonantly couple with proximal quantum emitters operating in the near-infrared. We show that the nonlinear near-field produced by a graphene…
Dark plasmonic modes have interesting properties, such as a longer lifetime and a narrower linewidth than their radiative counterpart, as well as little to no radiative losses. However, they have not been extensively studied yet due to their optical inaccessibility. Using electron-energy loss (EEL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy, the dark radial breathing modes (RBMs) in thin, monochrystalline gold nanodisks are systematically investigated in this work. It is found that the RBMs can be detected in a CL set-up despite only collecting the far-field. Their visibility in CL is attribute…
We analyse the interaction between charges and graphene layers. The electric polarisability of graphene induces a force, that can be described by an image charge. The analysis shows that graphene can be described as an imperfect conductor with a finite dielectric constant, $ε_r$, for weak coupling, and it behaves as a metal for strong fields. As a consequence, the interaction between polar molecules and graphene layer(s) tends to align the molecular dipole along the direction normal to the graphene, and quantitative estimates of the energy gain are given The strength of this interaction can be…

Recent experiments have measured local uniaxial strain fields in twisted bilayer graphene (TBG). Our calculations found that the finite Berry curvature generated by breaking the sublattice symmetry and the band proximity between narrow bands in these TBG induces a giant Berry dipole of order 10\,nm or larger. The large Berry dipole leads to transverse topological non-linear charge currents which dominates over the linear bulk valley current at experimentally accessible crossover in-plane electric field of $\sim 0.1 {\rm mV} / μ\rm{m}$. This anomalous Hall effect, due to Berry dipole, is strong…
The highly unidirectional excitation of graphene plasmons (GPs) through near-field interference of orthogonally polarized dipoles is investigated. The preferred excitation direction of GPs by a single circularly polarized dipole can be simply understood with the angular momentum conservation law. Moreover, the propagation direction of GPs can be switched not only by changing the phase difference between dipoles, but also by placing the z-polarized dipole to its image position, whereas the handedness of the background field remains the same. The unidirectional excitation of GPs can be extended …
It has been recently established that optoelectronic and non-linear transport experiments can give direct access to the dipole moment of the Berry curvature in non-magnetic and non-centrosymmetric materials. Thus far, non-vanishing Berry curvature dipoles have been shown to exist in materials with substantial spin-orbit coupling where low-energy Dirac quasiparticles form tilted cones. Here, we prove that this topological effect does emerge in two-dimensional Dirac materials even in the complete absence of spin-orbit coupling. In these systems, it is the warping of the Fermi surface that trigge…
Spin transitions driven by a periodically varying electric potential in dilute fluorinated graphene quantum dots are investigated. Flakes of monolayer graphene are considered as well as electrostatic electron traps induced in bilayer graphene. The stationary states are obtained within the tight-binding approach and are used to the basis of eigenstates to describe the system dynamics. The dilute fluorination of the top layer lifts the valley degeneracy of the confined states and attenuates the orbital magnetic dipole moments due to current circulation within the flake. Moreover, the spin-orbit …
We revisit the problem of bound states in graphene under the influence of point electric monopole and dipole impurity potentials extended to the case in which the membrane of this material is uniformly and uniaxially strained, which leads to a redefinition of the charge and dipole moment, respectively. By considering an anisotropic Fermi velocity, we analytically solve the resulting Dirac equation for each potential. We observe that the effect of the anisotropy is to promote or inhibit the critical behavior known to occur for each kind of impurity, depending on the direction along which strain…
We demonstrate that the electronic, thermal, and optical properties of a graphene bilayer with boron and nitrogen dopant atoms can be controlled by the interlayer distance between the layers in which the interaction energy and the van der Waals interaction between the dopant atoms play an essential role. We find a conversion of an AA- to an AB-stacked bilayer graphene caused by the repulsive interaction between dopant atoms. At a short interlayer distance, a strong repulsive interaction inducing a strong electric dipole moment of the dopant atoms is found. This gives rise to a breaking of the …
The Schottky barrier height ($E_{SBH}$) is a crucial factor in determining the transport properties of semiconductor materials as it directly regulates the carrier mobility in opto-electronics devices. In principle, van der Waals (vdW) Janus heterostructures offer an appealing avenue to controlling the ESBH. However, the underlying atomistic mechanisms are far from understood conclusively, which prompts for further research in the topic. To this end, here, we carry out an extensive first principles study of the electronic properties and $E_{SBH}$ of several vdW Janus MXY/Graphene (M=Mo, W; X, …
The electronic energy gap and total dipole moment of chemically functionalized hexagonal and triangular graphene quantum dots are investigated by the density functional theory. It has been found that the energy gap can be efficiently tuned in the selected clusters by edge passivation with different elements or groups. Edge passivation with oxygen provides a considerable decrease of the large energy gap observed in hexagonal nanodots. The edge states and energy gap in triangular graphene quantum dots can also be manipulated by passivation with fluorine. The total dipole moment strongly depends …
An external electric field changes the physical properties of polar-liquids due to the reorientation of their permanent dipoles. For example it should affect significantly the physical properties of water confined in a nanochannel. The latter effect is profoundly enhanced, if the field is applied along the nanochannel. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we predict that an in-plane electric field applied parallel to the channel polarizes water molecules which are confined between two graphene layers, resulting in distinct-ferroelectricity and electrical hysteresis. We found that electric fie…
We study the quantum nonlinear planar Hall effect in bilayer graphene under a steady in-plane magnetic field. When time-reversal symmetry is broken by the magnetic field, a charge current occurs in the second-order response to an external electric field, as a result of the Berry curvature dipole in momentum space. We have shown that a nonlinear planar Hall effect originating from the anomalous velocity is deduced by an orbital effect of an in-plane magnetic field on electrons in bilayer graphene in the complete absence of spin-orbit coupling. Taking into account the symmetry analysis, we deriv…
A split-ring resonator is a prototype of meta-atom in metamaterials. Though noble metal-based split-ring resonators have been extensively studied, up to date, there is no experimental demonstration of split-ring resonators made from graphene, an emerging intriguing plasmonic material. Here, we experimentally demonstrate graphene split-ring resonators with deep subwavelength (about one hundredth of the excitation wavelength) magnetic dipole response in the terahertz regime. Meanwhile, the quadrupole and electric dipole are observed, depending on the incident light polarization. All modes can be …
The unique gate-voltage dependent optical properties of graphene make it a promising electrically-tunable plasmonic material. In this work, we proposed in-situ control of the polarization of nanoantennas by combining plasmonic structures with an electrostatically tunable graphene monolayer. The tunable polarizer is designed based on an asymmetric cross nanoantenna comprising two orthogonal metallic dipoles sharing the same feed gap. Graphene monolayer is deposited on a Si/SiO2 substrate, and inserted beneath the nanoantenna. Our modelling demonstrates that as the chemical potential is incremen…
The spontaneous self-consistent generation of axial current and corresponding dipole-like magnetic field in a planar electron-positron system similar to graphene and related hetero-structures doped by charged impurity with charge $Z$ is explored. It is shown that this effect takes place for $Z \geq Z^{\ast}$ with $Z^{\ast}$ being a peculiar analogue of the Curie point in ferromagnetics. The properties of induced ferromagnetic state are studied in detail. It is shown also that the arising this way magnetic dipole leads to a significant decrease of the total Casimir (vacuum) energy of the system…
For centrosymmetric materials such as monolayer graphene, no optical second harmonic generation (SHG) is generally expected because it is forbidden under the electric-dipole approximation. Yet we observed a strong, doping induced SHG from graphene, with its highest strength comparable to the electric-dipole allowed SHG in non-centrosymmetric 2D materials. This novel SHG has the nature of an electric-quadrupole response, arising from the effective breaking of inversion symmetry by optical dressing with an in-plane photon wave vector. More remarkably, the SHG is widely tuned by carrier doping or…
Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) are nanoscale structures of graphene with quantum properties and edge effects that give photoluminescence properties. The effect of quantum confinement and differences in the nature of GQD structure makes its optical characteristics highly dependent on the size of the structure. This study explains a few exploratory semi empirical calculations of nonlinear polarization properties of functionalized GQD (fGQD) three dimensionally. Based on this, the calculation of the linear polarization and first hyperpolarization was performed by the finite field method, which is b…
Any structural transformation of water is sensitive to an external electric field, since water molecules have dipole moments. We study influence of external uniform electric field on crystallization of supercooled water enclosed between two graphene planes. Crystallization of such the system is caused by ordinary relaxation of the metastable phase into an ordered (crystalline) phase and by dipole alignment induced by an applied electric field. We found that this system at the temperature $T=268$ K, where water has the density $0.94$ g/cm$^3$ and the applied electric field is of the magnitude $…
Density functional theory (DFT) and many body perturbation theory at the G$_0$W$_0$ level are employed to study the electronic properties of polythiophene (PT) adsorbed on graphene surface. Analysis of charge density difference shows the substrate-adsorbate interaction leading to a strong physisorption and interfacial electric dipole moment formation. The electrostatic potential displays a -0.19 eV shift in the graphene work function from its initial value of 4.53 eV, as the result of the interaction. The LDA band gap of the polymer does not show any change, however the energy level lineshapes…
