Dark plasmonic modes have interesting properties, such as a longer lifetime and a narrower linewidth than their radiative counterpart, as well as little to no radiative losses. However, they have not been extensively studied yet due to their optical inaccessibility. Using electron-energy loss (EEL) and cathodoluminescence (CL) spectroscopy, the dark radial breathing modes (RBMs) in thin, monochrystalline gold nanodisks are systematically investigated in this work. It is found that the RBMs can be detected in a CL set-up despite only collecting the far-field. Their visibility in CL is attributed to the breaking of the mirror symmetry by the high-index substrate, creating an effective dipole moment. The outcoupling into the far-field is demonstrated to be enhanced by a factor of 4 by increasing the thickness of the supporting SiN membrane from 5 to 50 nm due to the increased net electric dipole moment in the substrate. Furthermore, it is shown that the resonance energy of RBMs can be easily tuned by varying the diameter of the nanodisk, making them promising candidates for nanophotonic applications.
An efficient numerical method based on half-space Green function and spherical harmonics expansion is used to study the light scattering from coupled multiple nanospheres on a substrate. The ellipsometric spectra for various geometries of coupled Au nanospheres are calculated and analyzed to realize the effects of plasmonic coupling of closely-spaced nanospheres. With only a few parameters to describe the distribution of various coupled nanosphere clusters embedded in a random distribution of nanospheres, the calculated ellipsometric spectra can fit the experimental data very well. This illust…
We have developed an efficient numerical method to investigate light scattering from plasmonic nanospheres on a substrate covered by a shell, based on the half-space Greens function approach. We use this method to study optical scattering from DNA molecules attached to metallic nanoparticles on a substrate and compare with experiment. We obtain fairly good agreement between theoretical predictions and the measured ellipsometric spectra. The metallic nanoparticles were used to detect the binding with DNA molecules in a microfluidic setup via spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE), and a detectable cha…
The behavior of Fano resonance and the reversal of near field optical binding force of dimers over different substrates have not been studied so far. In this work, we observe that if the closely located plasmonic cube homodimers over glass or high permittivity dielectric substrate are illuminated with plane wave polarized parallel to dimer axis, no reversal of optical binding force occurs. But if we apply the same set-up over a plasmonic substrate, stable Fano resonance occurs along with the reversal of near field binding force. It is observed that during such Fano resonance stronger coupling …

We develop a numerical algorithm based on previous theoretical work that addresses the influence of a substrate on the plasmonic response of collections of nanoparticles of spherical shape. Our method is a real space approach within the quasi-static limit that can be applied to a wide range of structures. We illustrate the role of the substrate through numerical calculations that explore single nanospheres an…
In this letter, a plasmonic dark field microscopy taking advantages of the polymer loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide (PLSPPW) is experimentally demonstrated. The dye molecules (Rhodamine 6G, Rh6G) are doped in the PLSPPW to launch the plasmonic waves or guided waves. Due to the localized property of these waves, the near-field optical energy on the surface of PLSPPW can be scattered into the far-field only in the presence of the objects. The scattering signals then form the dark-field image of the objects. The proposed technique just utilizes a chip-scale integrated plasmonic multilay…
We report systematic studies of plasmonic and photonic guiding modes in large-area chemical-vapor-deposition-grown graphene on nanostructured silicon substrates. Light interaction in graphene with substrate photonic crystals can be classified into four distinct regimes depending on the photonic crystal lattice constant and the various modal wavelengths (i.e. plasmonic, photonic and free-space). By optimizing the design of the substrate, these resonant modes can magnify the graphene absorption in infrared wavelength, for efficient modulators, filters, sensors and photodetectors on silicon photo…
Chemical synthesized silver nanowires have been proved to be the efficient architecture for Plasmonic waveguides, but the high propagation loss prevents their widely applications. Here, we demonstrate that the propagation distance of the plasmons along the Ag NW can be extended if the Ag NW was placed on a dielectric multilayer substrate containing a photonic band gap, but not placed on a commonly used glass substrate. The propagation distance at 630 nm wavelength can reach 16 um even that the Ag NW is as thin as 90 nm in diameter. Experimental and simulation results further show that the pola…
Vibrational strong coupling of molecules to optical cavities based on plasmonic resonances has been explored recently, because plasmonic near-fields can provide strong coupling in sub-diffraction limited volumes. Such field localization maximizes coupling strength, which is crucial for modifying the vibrational response of molecules and, thereby, manipulating chemical reactions. Here, we demonstrate an angle-independent plasmonic nanodisk substrate that overcomes limitations of traditional Fabry-Perot optical cavities, because the design can strongly couple with all molecules on the surface of…

This review summarizes the recent developments of plasmon-free SERS substrates and specially focuses on the enhancement mechanisms and strategies. Furthermore, the promising appl…
Over the last decade, plasmonic antireflecting nanostructures have been extensively studied to be utilized in various optical and optoelectronic systems such as lenses, solar cells, photodetectors, and others. The growing interest to all-dielectric photonics as an alternative optical technology along with plasmonics motivates us to compare antireflection properties of all-dielectric and plasmonic nanoparticle coatings based on silver and crystalline silicon. Our results of numerical simulations for periodic arrays of spherical nanoparticles on top of amorphous silicon show that both silicon an…
Investigating the cellular internalization pathways of single molecules or single nano-objects is important to understanding cell-matter interactions and to applications in drug delivery and discovery. Imaging and tracking the motion of single molecules on cell plasma membrane require high spatial resolution in three dimensions (3D). Fluorescence imaging along the axial dimension with nanometer resolution has been highly challenging but critical to revealing displacements in trans-membrane events. Here, utilizing a plasmonic ruler based on the sensitive distance dependence of near-infrared flu…
We propose a composite layered structure for tunable, low-loss plasmon resonances, which con- sists of a noble-metal thin film coated in graphene and supported on a hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) substrate. We calculate electron energy loss spectra (EELS) for these structures, and nu- merically demonstrate that bulk plasmon losses in noble-metal films can be significantly reduced, and surface coupling enhanced, through the addition of a graphene coating and the wide-bandgap hBN substrate. Silver films with a trilayer graphene coating and hBN substrate demonstrated sur- face plasmon-dominant spe…
High-quality factor plasmonic devices are crucial components in the fields of nanophotonics, quantum computing and sensing. The majority of these devices are required to be fabricated on non-lattice matched or transparent amorphous substrates. Plasmonic devices quality factor is mainly defined by ohmic losses, scattering losses at grain boundaries, and in-plane plasmonic scattering losses of a metal - substrate system. Here, we demonstrate the deposition technique to e-beam evaporate ultralow-loss silver thin films on transparent lattice-mismatched substrates. The process is based on evolution…
Simple high-performance two-stage hybrid technique was developed for fabrication of different plasmonic nanostructures, including nanorods, nanorings, as well as more complex structures on glass substrates. In this technique a thin noble metal film on a dielectric substrate is irradiated by a tightly focused single nanosecond laser pulse and then the modified region is slowly polished by an accelerated argon ion (Ar+) beam. As a result, each nanosecond laser pulse locally modifies the initial metal film through initiation of fast melting and subsequent hydrodynamic processes, while the followi…
The plasmon resonances (modes) of a metal nanostructure can be defined as a dipole, a quadrupole, or high-order modes depending on the surface charge distribution induced by the incident field. In a non-symmetrical environment or clusters, the modes can hybridize and exhibit different behavior and properties. In this work, we study experimentally and numerically the substrate-induced hybridization of plasmonic modes of a silver nanocylinder. The applications of plasmonic nanoparticles such as refractive index sensing and enhanced spectroscopies often rely on the sustained mode spectral positio…
Molecular beam epitaxy allows for the monolithic integration of wavelength-flexible epitaxial infrared plasmonic materials with quantum-engineered infrared optoelectronic active regions. We experimentally demonstrate a six-fold enhancement in photoluminescence from ultra-thin (total thickness of 1/32-th wavelength) long wavelength infrared (LWIR) superlattices grown on highly doped semiconductor designer metal virtual substrates when compared to the same superlattice grown on an undoped virtual substrate. Analytical and numerical models of the emission process via a Dyadic Greens function form…
In this paper, we study a plasmonic horn nanoantenna on a metal-backed substrate. The horn nanoantenna structure consists of a two-wire transmission line (TWTL) flared at the end. We analyze the effect of the substrate thickness on the nanoantenna's radiation pattern, and demonstrate beam steering in a broad range of elevation angles. Furthermore, we analyze the effect of the ground plane on the impedance matching between the antenna and the TWTL, and observe that the ground plane increases the back reflection into the waveguide. To reduce the reflection, we develop a transmission line model t…
Understanding the interaction between plasmonic nanoparticles and transparent conductive oxides is instrumental to the development of next-generation photovoltaic, opto-electronic and energy-efficient solid-state lighting devices. We investigated the optical response of hybrid media composed of gold nanoparticles deposited on aluminum-doped zinc oxide thin films with varying doping concentration by spectroscopic ellipsometry. The dielectric functions of bare AZO were addressed first, revealing doping-induced effects such as the band-gap shift and the appearance of free carriers. In the hybrid …
The properties of thermal radiation exchange between hot and cold objects can be strongly modified if they interact in the near field where electromagnetic coupling occurs across gaps narrower than the dominant wavelength of thermal radiation. Using a rigorous fluctuational electrodynamics approach, we predict that ultra-thin films of plasmonic materials can be used to dramatically enhance near-field heat transfer. The total spectrally integrated film-to-film heat transfer is over an order of magnitude larger than between the same materials in bulk form and also exceeds the levels achievable w…
How to measure magnetic field induced magneto-optical (MO) activity of nonmagnetic elliptical plasmonic nanodisks which rest on a dielectric substrate remains a challenge since the substrate contribute most of the overall MO which varies with light polarization with respect to the orientation of the nanodisks. Here we present a spectroscopic characterization. We find that only when light is incident from the nanostructures side with polarization aligned with one of the two symmetry axes, one can subtract the MO contribution from the substrate by an amount equal to that of a bare one. By a deta…
Plasmonics enables deep-subwavelength concentration of light and has become important for fundamental studies as well as real-life applications. Two major existing platforms of plasmonics are metallic nanoparticles and metallic films. Metallic nanoparticles allow efficient coupling to far field radiation, yet their synthesis typically leads to poor material quality. Metallic films offer substantially higher quality materials, but their coupling to radiation is typically jeopardized due to the large momentum mismatch with free space. Here, we propose and theoretically investigate optically thin…
Using nanometer spatial resolution electron-energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and cathodoluminescence (CL) mapping, we demonstrate that Au alloys containing a poor plasmonic metal (Pd) can nevertheless sustain multiple size-dependent localized surface plasmon resonances and observe strong field enhancement at Pd-rich tips, where the composition is in fact least favorable for plasmons. These Au/Pd stellated nanocrystals are also involved in substrate and interparticle coupling, as unraveled by EELS tilt series.
We demonstrated a highly sensitive, waferscale, highly uniform plasmonic nanomushroom substrate based on plastic for nakedeye plasmonic colorimetry and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). We gave it the name FlexBrite. The dualmode functionality of FlexBrite allows for label-free qualitative analysis by SERS with an enhancement factor (EF) of 10^8 and labelfree quantitative analysis by naked eye colorimetry with a sensitivity of 611 nm RIU-1. The SERS EF of FlexBrite in the wet state was found to be 4.81 X 10^8, 7 times stronger than in the dry state, making FlexBrite suitable for aque…
In this Letter we theoretically study the possibility of total power absorption of light in a planar grid modelled as an effective sheet with zero optical thickness. The key prerequisite of this effect is the simultaneous presence of both resonant electric and magnetic modes in the structure. We show that the needed level of the magnetic mode is achievable using the effect of substrate-induced bianisotropy which also allows the huge local field enhancement at the same wavelength where the maximal absorption holds.
Nanofabrication of photonic components based on dielectric-loaded surface plasmon-polariton waveguides (DLSPPWs) excited by single nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in nanodiamonds is demonstrated. DLSPPW circuits are built around NV containing nanodiamonds, which are certified to be single-photon emitters, using electron-beam lithography of hydrogen silsesquioxane (HSQ) resist on silver-coated silicon substrates. A propagation length of ~20 μm for the NV single-photon emission is measured with DLSPPWs. A 5-fold enhancement in the total decay rate and up to 63% coupling efficiency to the DLSPPW mo…
To develop highly sensitive, stable and repeatable surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates is crucial for analytical detection, which is a challenge for traditional metallic structures. Herein, by taking advantage of the high surface activity of 1T' transition metal telluride, we have fabricated high-density gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) that are spontaneously in-situ prepared on the 1T' MoTe2 atomic layers via a facile method, forming a plasmonic-2D material hybrid SERS substrate. This AuNP formation is unique to the 1T' phase, which is repressed in 2H MoTe2 with less surface activit…
A range of seven different Ag plasmonic arrays formed using nanostructures of varying shape, size and gap were fabricated using helium-ion lithography (HIL) on an InGaN/GaN quantum well (QW) substrate. The influence of the array geometry on plasmon-enhanced Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) from a single InGaN QW to a ~ 80 nm layer of CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) embedded in a poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) matrix is investigated. It is shown that the energy transfer efficiency is strongly dependent on the array properties and an efficiency of ~ 51% is observed for a nanoring array. Th…
Nanoparticles made of non-noble metals such as gallium have recently attracted significant attention due to promising applications in UV plasmonics. To date, experiments have mostly focused on solid and liquid pure gallium particles immobilized on solid substrates. However, for many applications, colloidal liquid-metal nanoparticle solutions are vital. Here, we experimentally demonstrate strong UV plasmonic resonances of eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) liquid-metal alloy nanoparticles suspended in ethanol. We rationalise experimental results through a theoretical model based on Mie theory. Our…
Cathodoluminescence spectroscopy has been performed on silver nanoparticles in a scanning electron microscopy setup. Peaks appearing in the visible range for particles fabricated on silicon substrate are shown to arrive from excitation of out of plane eigenmodes by the electron beam. Monochromatic emission maps have been shown to resolve spatial field variation of resonant plasmon mode on length scale smaller than 25nm. Finite-difference time-domain numerical simulations are performed for both the cases of light excitation and electron excitation. The results of radiative emission under electr…
Quantum photonic integrated circuits (QPICs) based on dielectric waveguides have been widely used in linear optical quantum computation. Recently, surface plasmons have been introduced to this application because they can confine and manipulate light beyond the diffraction limit. In this study, the on-chip quantum interference of two single surface plasmons was achieved using dielectric-loaded surface-plasmon-polariton waveguides. The high visibility (greater than 90%) proves the bosonic nature of single plasmons and emphasizes the feasibility of achieving basic quantum logic gates for linear …
Formation of nanoscale laser-induced periodic surface structures on thin metal films (of the size of the optical penetration depth) is a yet unexplored area that is expected to open new routes for laser patterning and a wealth of exciting applications in optics, photonics, and sensing. In contrast to the common belief that excitation of Surface Plasmon Polaritons (SPPs) on the air/metal interface plays the dominant role in the features of the induced topographies, in this work, we demonstrate that the excitation of coupled SPPs in both air/metal and metal/substrate interfaces, along with other…
Optically-induced magnetic resonances in non-magnetic media have unlocked magnetic light-matter interactions and led to new technologies in many research fields. Previous proposals for the levitation of nanoscale particles without structured illumination have worked on the basis of epsilon-near-zero surfaces or anisotropic materials but these carry with them significant fabrication difficulties. We report the optical levitation of a magnetic dipole over a wide range of realistic materials, including bulk metals, thereby relieving these difficulties. The repulsion is independent of surface loss…
The nanoscale mode volumes of surface plasmon polaritons have enabled plasmonic lasers and condensates with ultrafast operation. Most plasmonic lasers are based on noble metals, rendering the optical mode structure inert to external fields. Here, we demonstrate active magnetic-field control over lasing in a periodic array of Co/Pt multilayer nanodots immersed in an IR-140 dye solution. We exploit the magnetic nature of the nanoparticles combined with mode tailoring to control the lasing action. Under circularly polarized excitation, angle-resolved photoluminescence measurements reveal a transi…
We report that rhomb-shaped metal nanoantenna arrays support multiple plasmonic resonances, making them favorable bio-sensing substrates. Besides the two localized plasmonic dipole modes associated with the two principle axes of the rhombi, the sample supports an additional grating-induced surface plasmon polariton resonance. The plasmonic properties of all modes are carefully studied by far-field measurements together with numerical and analytical calculations. The sample is then applied to surface-enhanced Raman scattering measurements. It is shown to be highly efficient since two plasmonic …
The key component of nanoplasmonics is metals. For a long time, gold and silver have been the metals of choice for constructing plasmonic nanodevices because of their excellent optical properties. However, these metals possess a common characteristic, i.e., their optical responses are static. The past decade has been witnessed tremendous interest in dynamic control of the optical properties of plasmonic nanostructures. To enable dynamic functionality, several approaches have been proposed and implemented. For instance, plasmonic nanostructures can be fabricated on stretchable substrates or on …
Molecular motor proteins form the basis of cellular dynamics. Recently, notable efforts have led to the creation of their DNA-based mimics, which can carry out complex nanoscale motion. However, such functional analogues have not yet been integrated or operated inside synthetic cells toward the goal of realizing artificial biological systems entirely from the bottom-up. In this Letter, we encapsulate and actuate DNA-assembled dynamic nanostructures inside cell-sized microfluidic compartments. These encapsulated DNA nanostructures not only exhibit structural reconfigurability owing to their pH-…
Nanoparticle chain waveguide based on negative-epsilon material is investigated through a generic 3D finite-element Bloch-mode solver which derives complex propagation constant ($k$). Our study starts from waveguides made of non-dispersive material, which not only singles out "waveguide dispersion" but also motivates search of new materials to achieve guidance at unconventional wavelengths. Performances of gold or silver chain waveguides are then evaluated; a concise comparison of these two types of chain waveguides has been previously missing. Beyond these singly-plasmonic chain waveguides, w…
