Localized surface plasmons are confined collective oscillations of electrons in metallic nanoparticles. When driven by light, the optical response is dictated by geometrical parameters and the dielectric environment and plasmons are therefore extremely important for sensing applications. Plasmons in graphene disks have the additional benefit to be highly tunable via electrical stimulation. Mechanical vibrations create structural deformations in ways where the excitation of localized surface plasmons can be strongly modulated. We show that the spectral shift in such a scenario is determined by a complex interplay between the symmetry and shape of the modal vibrations and the plasmonic mode pattern. Tuning confined modes of light in graphene via acoustic excitations, paves new avenues in shaping the sensitivity of plasmonic detectors, and in the enhancement of the interaction with optical emitters, such as molecules, for future nanophotonic devices.
We study localized plasmonic excitations in bilayer graphene (BLG) nanodisks, comparing AA-stacked and AB-stacked BLG and contrasting the results to the case of two monolayers without electronic hybridization. The electrodynamic response of the BLG electron gas is described in terms of a spatially homogeneous surface conductivity, and an efficient alternative two-dimensional electrostatic approach is employed to carry out all the numerical calculations of plasmon resonances. Due to a unique electronic band structures, the resonance frequency of the traditional dipolar plasmonic mode in the AA-…
Magnetoplasmonics exploits interactions between light and magnetic matter at the nanoscale for light manipulation and resonant magneto-optics. One of the great challenges of this field is overcoming optical losses in magnetic metals. Here we exploit surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) excited at the interface of a SiO2/Au bilayer to induce strong magneto-optical responses on the Ni nanodisks of a periodic array. Using a reference system made of Au nanodisks, we show that optical losses in Ni do hardly broaden the linewidth of SPP-driven magneto-optical signals. Loss mitigation is attained becaus…
The ability to modulate light at high speeds is of paramount importance for telecommunications, information processing, and medical imaging technologies. This has stimulated intense efforts to master optoelectronic switching at visible and near-infrared frequencies, although coping with current computer speeds in integrated architectures still remains a major challenge. As a partial success, midinfrared light modulation has been recently achieved through gating patterned graphene. Here we show that atomically thin noble metal nanoislands can extend optical modulation to the visible and near-in…
Plasmonic nanoantennas, the properties of which are essentially determined by their resonance modes, are of interest both fundamentally and for various applications. Antennas with various shapes, geometries and compositions have been demonstrated, each possessing unique properties and potential applications. Here, we propose the use of a sidewall coating as an additional degree of freedom to manipulate plasmonic gap cavity modes in strongly coupled metallic nanodisks. It is demonstrated that for a dielectric middle layer with a thickness of a few tens of nanometers and a sidewall plasmonic coa…
We study nonlinear modes in one-dimensional arrays of doped graphene nanodisks with Kerr-type nonlinear response in the presence of an external electric field. We present the theoretical model describing the evolution of the disks' polarizations, taking into account intrinsic graphene losses and dipole-dipole coupling between the graphene nanodisks. We reveal that this nonlinear system can support discrete dissipative scalar solitons of both longitudinal and transverse polarizations, as well as vector solitons composed of two mutually coupled polarization components. We demonstrate the formati…
It is very interesting to bring plasmonic circular dichroism spectroscopy to the mid-infrared spectral interval, and there are two reasons for this. This spectral interval is very important for thermal bio-imaging and, simultaneously, this spectral range includes vibrational lines of many chiral biomolecules. Here we demonstrate that graphene plasmons indeed offer such opportunity. In particular, we show that chiral graphene assemblies consisting of a few graphene nanodisks can generate strong circular dichroism (CD) in the mid-infrared interval. The CD signal is generated due to the plasmon-p…
Active nanoplasmonics has recently led to the emergence of many promising applications. One of them is spaser (surface plasmons amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) that has been shown to generate coherent and intense fields of selected surface plasmon modes that are strongly localized in the nanoscale. We propose a novel nanospaser composed of metal nanoparticles-graphene nanodisks hybrid plasmonic system as its resonator and a quantum dots cascade stack as its gain medium. We derive the plasmonic fields induced by pulsed excitation through the use of the effective medium theory…
Magneto optical activity implemented in plasmonic nanostructures provides a new functionality in active plasmonics. To what an extent, one can benefit from this new degree of freedom is still under open discussion. In this work, with the development of a wavelength parallel characterization tool for measuring the optic and MO properties of nanostructures, we present systematic studies of the magneto-optical activity of Au/[Co/Pt]n/Au nanodisk array with various of disk size, shape and grating constant.
We demonstrate strong exciton-plasmon coupling in silver nanodisk arrays integrated with monolayer MoS2 via angle-resolved reflectance microscopy spectra of the coupled system. Strong exciton-plasmon coupling is observed with the exciton-plasmon coupling strength up to 58 meV at 77 K, which also survives at room temperature. The strong coupling involves three types of resonances: MoS2 excitons, localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs) of individual silver nanodisks and plasmonic lattice resonances of the nanodisk array. We show that the exciton-plasmon coupling strength, polariton composit…
Engineering light-matter interactions up to the strong-coupling regime at room temperature is one of the cornerstones of modern nanophotonics. Achieving this goal will enable new platforms for potential applications such as quantum information processing, quantum light sources and even quantum metrology. Materials like transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDC) and in particular tungsten disulfide (WS$_2$) possess large transition dipole moments comparable to semiconductor-based quantum dots, and strong exciton binding energies allowing the detailed exploration of light-matter interactions at roo…
How to measure magnetic field induced magneto-optical (MO) activity of nonmagnetic elliptical plasmonic nanodisks which rest on a dielectric substrate remains a challenge since the substrate contribute most of the overall MO which varies with light polarization with respect to the orientation of the nanodisks. Here we present a spectroscopic characterization. We find that only when light is incident from the nanostructures side with polarization aligned with one of the two symmetry axes, one can subtract the MO contribution from the substrate by an amount equal to that of a bare one. By a deta…
Light-matter interactions at the nanoscale constitute a fundamental ingredient for engineering applications in nanophotonics and quantum optics. To this regard electromagnetic Mie resonances excited in high-refractive index dielectric nanoparticles have recently attracted interest because of their lower losses and better control over the scattering patterns compared to their plasmonic metallic counterparts. The emergence of several resonances in those systems results in an overall high complexity, where the electric and magnetic dipoles have significant overlap in the case of spherical symmetr…
Structural coloration of natural surfaces often originates from the change of reflected colors depending on the viewing or illumination angle. Recently, the structural coloration of nanoplasmonic structures have attracted a great deal of attention due to high compactness, robust stability and high color-tunability, as well as high sensitivity to an incident angle. Here we report complementary plasmonic structures (CPS) for transmission structural coloration by tailoring a single spectral peak depending on the incident angle of light. The CPS features self-aligned silver nanohole and nanodisk a…
Due to strong mode-confinement, long propagation-distance, and unique tunability, graphene plasmons have been widely explored in the mid-infrared and terahertz windows. However, it remains a big challenge to push graphene plasmons to shorter wavelengths in order to integrate graphene plasmon concepts with existing mature technologies in the near-infrared region. We investigate localized graphene plasmons supported by graphene nanodisks and experimentally demonstrated graphene plasmon working at 2 μm with the aid of a fully scalable block copolymer self-assembly method. Our results show a promi…
Suspended graphene waveguides were deposited on micron-scale periodic metal (plasmonic) structures. Raman scattering of test molecules (B. Megaterium), deposited on the waveguides' surface, exhibited azimuthal cycles upon rotation: at these micron scales, spontaneous Raman ought to be independent of phase matching conditions. In addition, we observed angular-selective quadratic intensity dependence contrary to the typical linear behavior of spontaneous Raman. The effects were observed at very modest pump laser intensities (<10 MW/cm2 at the sample surface, oftenly used in Raman experiments). W…

Using a nearest-neighbor tight-binding model we investigate quantum effects of plasmons on few-nanometer wide graphene nanoribbons, both for zigzag and armchair edge terminations. With insight from the Dirac description we find an emerging scale-invariant behavior that deviates from the classical model both for zigzag and armchair structures. The onset of the deviation can be related to the position of the lowest parabolic band in the band structure. Dirac theory is only valid in the parameter subspace where the scale invariance holds that relates narrow ribbons with high doping to wide ribbon…
A key component for optical on-chip communication is an efficient light source. However, to enable low energy per bit communication and local integration with Si CMOS, devices need to be further scaled down. In this work, we fabricate micro- and nanolasers of different shapes in InP by direct wafer bonding on Si. Metal-clad cavities have been proposed as means to scale dimensions beyond the diffraction limit of light by exploiting hybrid photonic-plasmonic modes. Here, we explore the size scalability of whispering-gallery mode light sources by cladding the sidewalls of the device with Au. The …
The optical response of metallic nanoparticle arrays is dominated by localized surface plasmon excitations and is the sum of individual particle contributions modified by inter-particle coupling depending on specific array geometry. Here we scrutinize how experimentally measured properties of large scale (30 mm$^{2}$) amorphous Au nanodisk arrays stem from single particle properties and their interaction. They give rise to a distinct oscillatory behavior of the plasmon peak position, full-width at half-maximum, and extinction efficiency which depends on the minimum particle center-to-center (C…
We simulate the near-field effects of strong coupling between molecular excitons and localized surface plasmons, supported by aluminum nanodisks. The simulations are done using a simple model of a two-level system, implemented in a commercial electromagnetic finite-difference time-domain solver. While the Rabi splitting is present in the near-field, its spectral gap is seen to be smaller than the one obtained in the far-field, although it follows a clear square root dependence on the molecular density as expected. Moreover, the energy exchange between the plasmonic mode and the excitonic mater…
Hybrid nanocomposites can offer a wide range of opportunities to control the light-matter interac- tion and electromagnetic energy flow at the nanoscale, leading to exotic optoelectronic devices. We study theoretically the dipole-dipole interaction in noble metal nanoparticles-graphene nanodisks- quantum dots hybrid systems in the optical region of the electromagnetic spectrum. The quantum dot is assumed to be a three-level atom interacting with ultrashort control and probe pulses in a Lambda configuration. The dynamics of the system are studied by numerically solving for the time evo- lution …
Doubly enhanced third harmonic generation (THG) is realized by the electric dipole resonance (EDR) in silicon nanodisks placed onto a metallic film at near-infrared. By introducing the metal substrate, the perfect electric conductor (PEC) surface effect can be formed to not only enhance the electric field in silicon, but also improve the near-field distribution. Meanwhile, in consideration of the periodic nanostructure, the silicon nanodisk, acting as a high-refractive-index dielectric grating, can generate a propagating surface plasmon resonance (PSPR) on the metal surface. By flexibly manipu…
Chirality is a fundamental asymmetry phenomenon, with chiral optical elements exhibiting asymmetric response in reflection or absorption of circularly polarized light. Recent realizations of such elements include nanoplasmonic systems with broken mirror symmetry and polarization-contrasting optical absorption known as circular dichroism. An alternative route to circular dichroism is provided by spin-valley polarized excitons in atomically thin semiconductors. In the presence of magnetic fields, they exhibit an imbalanced coupling to circularly polarized photons and thus circular dichroism. Her…
Metasurfaces consisting of hybrid metal/dielectric nanostructures carry advantages of both material platforms. The hybrid structures can not only tightly confine subwavelength electromagnetic fields but also lower the absorption losses. Such optical characteristics are difficult to realize in metamaterials with only metal or dielectric structures. Hybrid designs also expand the scope of material choices and the types of optical modes that can be excited in a metasurface, thereby allowing novel light matter interactions. Here we present a metallo-dielectric hybrid metasurface design consisting …
Localized and propagating surface plasmon resonances are known to show very pronounced interactions if they are simultaneously excited in the same nanostructure. Here we study the fano interference that occurs between localized (LSPR) and propagating (SPP) modes by means of phase sensitive spectroscopic ellipsometry. The sample structures consist of periodic gratings of gold nanodisks on top of a continuous gold layer and a thin dielectric spacer, in which the structural dimensions were tuned in such a way that the dipolar LSPR mode and the propagating SPP modes are excited in the same spectra…
We present a systematic study on the optical and magneto-optical properties of Ni/SiO$_2$/Au dimer lattices. By considering the excitation of orthogonal dipoles in the Ni and Au nanodisks, we analytically demonstrate that the magnetoplasmonic response of dimer lattices is governed by a complex interplay of near- and far-field interactions. Near-field coupling between dipoles in Ni and low-loss Au enhances the polarizabilty of single dimers compared to that of isolated Ni nanodisks. Far-field diffractive coupling in periodic lattices of these two particle types enlarges the difference in effect…
Localized surface plasmon resonances possess very interesting properties for a wide variety of sensing applications. In many of the existing applications only the intensity of the reflected or transmitted signals is taken into account, while the phase information is ignored. At the center frequency of a (localized) surface plasmon resonance, the electron cloud makes the transition between in- and out-of-phase oscillation with respect to the incident wave. Here we show that this information can experimentally be extracted by performing phase-sensitive measurements, which result in linewidths th…
