Due to strong mode-confinement, long propagation-distance, and unique tunability, graphene plasmons have been widely explored in the mid-infrared and terahertz windows. However, it remains a big challenge to push graphene plasmons to shorter wavelengths in order to integrate graphene plasmon concepts with existing mature technologies in the near-infrared region. We investigate localized graphene plasmons supported by graphene nanodisks and experimentally demonstrated graphene plasmon working at 2 μm with the aid of a fully scalable block copolymer self-assembly method. Our results show a promising way to promote graphene plasmons for both fundamental studies and potential applications in the near-infrared window.
A method for the substantial reduction of propagation loss of surface plasmons was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The method is based on the fact that the propagation loss of the surface plasmons depends significantly on the optical confinement of the plasmon. A plasmonic structure, which contains a metal and two dielectric layers of different refractive indexes, is proposed in order to optimize optical confinement and to reduce propagation loss of the surface plasmons. A low propagation loss of 0.17 dB/um for a surface plasmon in a Fe/MgO/AlGaAs plasmonic structure was achieved. A …
Experimental evidence of mode-selective evanescent power coupling at telecommunication frequencies with efficiencies up to 75 % from a tapered optical fiber to a carefully designed metal nanoparticle plasmon waveguide is presented. The waveguide consists of a two-dimensional square lattice of lithographically defined Au nanoparticles on an optically thin silicon membrane. The dispersion and attenuation properties of the waveguide are analyzed using the fiber taper. The high efficiency of power transfer into these waveguides solves the coupling problem between conventional optics and plasmonic …
Controlling low power light beam self-confinement with ultrafast response time opens up opportunities for the development of signal processing in microdevices. The combination of highly nonlinear medium with the tight confinement of plasmonic waves offers a viable but challenging configuration to reach this goal. Here, we report the experimental observation of plasmon-soliton waves propagating in a chalcogenide-based four-layer planar geometry engineered to limit plasmon propagation losses while exhibiting efficient Kerr self-focusing at moderate power. The observations reveal a strongly enhan…
We theoretically demonstrate a high-sensitivity, graphene-plasmon based refractive index sensor working in the mid-infrared at room temperature. The bulk figure of merit of our sensor reaches values above $10$, but the key aspect of our proposed plasmonic sensor is its surface sensitivity which we examine in detail. We have used realistic values regarding doping level and electron relaxation time, which is the limiting factor for the sensor performance. Our results show quantitatively the high performance of graphene-plasmon based refractive index sensors working in the mid-infrared.
We present a magnetically biased graphene-ferrite structure discriminating the TE and TM plasmonic modes of graphene. In this structure, the graphene TM plasmons interact reciprocally with the structure. In contrast, the graphene TE plasmons exhibit nonreciprocity. This nonreciprocity is manifested in unidirectional TE propagation in a frequency band close to the interband threshold frequency. The proposed structure provides a unique platform for the experimental demonstration of the unusual existence of the TE plasmonic mode in graphene.
Two-dimensional graphene plasmon-based technologies will enable the development of fast, compact and inexpensive active photonic elements because, unlike plasmons in other materials, graphene plasmons can be tuned via the doping level. Such tuning is harnessed within terahertz quantum cascade lasers to reversibly alter their emission. This is achieved in two key steps: First by exciting graphene plasmons within an aperiodic lattice laser and, second, by engineering photon lifetimes, linking graphene's Fermi energy with the round-trip gain. Modal gain and hence laser spectra are highly sensitiv…
Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating along a waveguide working electrode are sensitive to changes in local refractive index, which follow changes in the concentration of reduced and oxidised species near the working electrode. The real-time response of the output optical power from a waveguide working electrode is proportional to the time convolution of the electrochemical current density, precluding the need to compute the latter a posteriori via numerical integration. The theoretical optical response of a waveguide working electrode is derived, and validated experimentally via chron…
A high-performance wide-angle refractive index sensor based on a simple onedimensional (1D) metallic deep nanogroove array with high aspect ratio is experimentally fabricated and demonstrated. The 1D deep groove array is featured by the excitation of magnetic plasmon (MP), referring to an effective coupling of incident electromagnetic waves with a strong magnetic response induced inside the deep grooves. Utilizing the MP resonances that are extremely sensitive to the surrounding dielectric medium, we successfully achieve a refractive index sensitivity (RIS) up to $\sim$1300 nm/RIU, which is hi…
We present an optical mode solver for a whispering gallery resonator coupled to an adjacent arbitrary shaped nano-particle that breaks the axial symmetry of the resonator. Such a hybrid resonator-nanoparticle is similar to what was recently used for bio-detection and for field enhancement. We demonstrate our solver by parametrically studying a toroid-nanoplasmonic device and get the optimal nano-plasmonic size for maximal enhancement. We investigate cases near a plasmonic resonance as well as far from a plasmonic resonance. Unlike common plasmons that typically benefit from working near their …
We demonstrate `deterministic' launching of propagative quantum surface-plasmon polaritons at freely chosen positions on gold plasmonic receptacles. This is achieved by using as plasmon launcher a near-field scanning optical source made of a diamond nanocrystal with two Nitrogen-Vacancy color-center occupancy. Our demonstration relies on leakage-radiation microscopy of a thin homogeneous gold film and on near-field optical microscopy of a nanostructured thick gold film. Our work paves the way to future fundamental studies and applications in quantum plasmonics that require an accurate position…
The device applications of plasmonic systems such as graphene and two dimensional electron gases (2DEGs) in III-V heterostructures include terahertz detectors, mixers, oscillators and modulators. These two dimensional (2D) plasmonic systems are not only well-suited for device integration, but also enable the broad tunability of underdamped plasma excitations via an applied electric field. We present demonstrations of the coherent coupling of multiple voltage tuned GaAs/AlGaAs 2D plasmonic resonators under terahertz irradiation. By utilizing a plasmonic homodyne mixing mechanism to downconvert …
The experimental demonstration and characterization is made of the plasmon-mediated resonant transmission through an embedded undulated continuous thin metal film under normal incidence. 1D undulations are shown to enable a spatially resolved polarisation filtering whereas 2D undulations lead to spatially resolved, polarization independent transmission. Whereas the needed submicron microstructure lends itself in principle to CD-like low-cost mass replication by means of injection moulding and embossing, the present paper demonstrates the expected transmission effects on experimental models bas…
Topological optical states exhibit unique immunity to defects and the ability to propagate without losses rendering them ideal for photonic applications.A powerful class of such states is based on time-reversal symmetry breaking of the optical response. However, existing proposals either involve sophisticated and bulky structural designs or can only operate in the microwave regime. Here, we propose and provide a theoretical proof-of-principle demonstration for highly confined topologically protected optical states to be realized at infrared frequencies in a simple 2D material structure-a period…
The paper contains a theory of laser action in a so called SPASER, a laser with a surface plasmon. The goal of the theory development is an ascertainment of physical nature of SPASER lasers that were successfully put into action by M. A. Noginov et al, announced in the paper entitled Demonstration of a spaser-based nanolaser, and by Xiang Zhang et al, the paper Plasmon lasers at deep subwavelength scale, both papers in Nature Advance online publication, August 2009. Plasmonic modes have huge losses but simultaneously the probabilities of radiative processes in atoms (molecules) with emission o…
We observe unique absorption resonances in silver/silica multilayer-based epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) metamaterials that are related to radiative bulk plasmon-polariton states of thin-films originally studied by Ferrell (1958) and Berreman (1963). In the local effective medium, metamaterial descrip- tion, the unique effect of the excitation of these microscopic modes is counterintuitive and captured within the complex propagation constant, not the effective dielectric permittivities. Theoretical anal- ysis of the band structure for our metamaterials shows the existence of multiple Ferrell-Berreman…
A fundamental building block for nanophotonics is the ability to achieve negative refraction of polaritons, because this could enable the demonstration of many unique nanoscale applications such as deep-subwavelength imaging, superlens, and novel guiding. However, to achieve negative refraction of highly squeezed polaritons, such as plasmon polaritons in graphene and phonon polaritons in boron nitride (BN) with their wavelengths squeezed by a factor over 100, requires the ability to flip the sign of their group velocity at will, which is challenging. Here we reveal that the strong coupling bet…
We present a quantum theory for the interaction of a two level emitter with surface plasmon polaritons confined in single-mode waveguide resonators. Based on the Green's function approach, we develop the conditions for the weak and strong coupling regimes by taking into account the sources of dissipation and decoherence: radiative and non-radiative decays, internal loss processes in the emitter, as well as propagation and leakage losses of the plasmons in the resonator. The theory is supported by numerical calculations for several quantum emitters, GaAs and CdSe quantum dots and NV centers tog…
Topologically protected plasmonic modes located inside topological bandgaps are attracting increasing attention, chiefly due to their robustness against disorder-induced backscattering. Here, we introduce a bilayer graphene metasurface that possesses plasmonic topological valley interface modes when the mirror symmetry of the metasurface is broken by horizontally shifting the lattice of holes of the top layer of the two freestanding graphene layers in opposite directions. In this configuration, light propagation along the domain-wall interface of the bilayer graphene metasurface shows unidirec…
Plasmonic metasurfaces are able to modify the wavefront by altering the light intensity, phase and polarization state. Active plasmonic metasurfaces would allow dynamic modulation of the wavefront which give rise to interesting application such as beam-steering, holograms and tunable waveplates. Graphene is an interesting material with dynamic property which can be controlled by electrical gating at an ultra-fast speed. We use a graphene-integrated metasurface to induce a tunable phase change to the wavefront. The metasurface supports a Fano resonance which produces high-quality resonances aro…
The advance in designing arrays of ultrathin two-dimensional optical nano-resonators, known as metasurfaces, is currently enabling a large variety of novel flat optical components. The remarkable control over the electromagnetic fields offered by this technology can be further extended to the active regime in order to manipulate the light characteristics in real-time. In this contribution, we couple the excitonic resonance of atomic thin MoS2 monolayers with gap-surface-plasmon (GSP) metasurfaces, and demonstrate selective enhancement of the exciton-plasmon polariton emissions. We further demo…
The recoil optical force that acts on emitters near a surface or waveguide relies on near-field directionality and conservation of momentum. It features desirable properties uncommon in optical forces, such as the ability to produce it via wide-area illumination of vast numbers of particles without the need for focusing, or being dynamically switchable via the polarization of light. Unfortunately, these recoil forces are usually very weak and have not been experimentally observed in small dipolar particles. Some works theoretically demonstrate orders-of-magnitude enhancement of these forces vi…
The electromagnetic field scattered by nano-objects contains a broad range of wave vectors and can be efficiently coupled to waveguided modes. The dominant contribution to scattering from subwavelength dielectric and plasmonic nanoparticles is determined by electric and magnetic dipolar responses. Here, we experimentally demonstrate spectral and phase selective excitation of Janus dipoles, sources with electric and magnetic dipoles oscillating out of phase, in order to control near-field interference and directional coupling to waveguides. We show that by controlling the polarisation state of …
We introduce a novel scheme for efficient manipulation and detection of terahertz (THz) radiation. Our work consists of two parts; with a focus on proving the concept of our novel scheme, and the exploitation of graphene's peculiar properties. For the first part, we report on the successful demonstration of two multiresonance Split Ring Resonator (SRR) designs, for efficient modulation of THz frequency beams. The two designs are based on SRR intracoupling, with multiple predefined resonances covering the bandwidth 40-300 GHz. The simulation results obtained have been experimentally verified. T…
