The rotation dynamics of spiral galaxies is modeled using a sum of two mass distributions: a spherical bulge and a thin disk. The density functions representing these mass distributions are calculated from the total angular momentum of the galaxy and known rotation curves. When both bulge and disk density functions are assumed to be smooth and are given a value of zero beyond the edge of the galaxy, a unique solution is obtained. Moreover, the calculated density functions show that constant rotation curves are obtained from a nearly exponential luminosity profile with a dark matter distribution which follows that of the light emitting matter, without the need for modified Newtonian dynamics. Experimental detection of molecular hydrogen in spiral galaxies confirms the presence of a baryonic massive component consistent with the results obtained with this model. It is proposed that dark matter does not have to be exotic non-baryonic matter. Instead, it can be made of molecular hydrogen and condensed matter.
The Galaxy rotation curve is usually assumed to be flat. However, some galaxies have rotation curves that are lower than the flat rotation curve. In our Galaxy the Keplerian rotation of interstellar clouds in the galactic longitude l=135 was observed. We use a kinematic approach to derive the rotational velocity of classical Cepheids. The rotational velocity was calculated from radial velocity and from proper motion. The derived rotational velocities of Cepheids are between Keplerian rotation and the flat one. We fit a Galaxy rotation model consisting of a black hole, bulge, disk and halo to t…
It is common to attribute a flat rotation curve to our Galaxy. However Galazutdinov et al. (2015) in a recent paper have obtained a Keplerian rotation curve for interstellar clouds in outer parts of the Galaxy. They have calculated the distances from equivalent widths of interstellar CaII lines. The radial velocity was also measured on the interstellar CaII absorption line. We verify the result by Galazutdinov et al. (2015) basing on observations of old open clusters. We propose, that the observations of flat and Keplerian rotation curves may be caused by the assumption of circular orbits. The…
We present a modified Schwarzschild metric to introduce a weak breakdown of asymptotic flatness. The kinematics of the metric captures a wide range of galaxy rotation curves. We show baryonic Tully-Fisher relation on the basis of this modified Schwarzschild metric. On the basis of the kinematics of this modified metric we also show some connections between the size and ordinary matter content of the observable universe and the rotation curves of spiral galaxies.
It is shown here that a model for inertial mass, called quantised inertia, or MiHsC (Modified inertia by a Hubble-scale Casimir effect) predicts the rotational acceleration of the 153 good quality galaxies in the SPARC dataset (2016 AJ 152 157), with a large range of scales and mass, from just their visible baryonic matter, the speed of light and the co-moving diameter of the observable universe. No dark matter is needed. The performance of quantised inertia is comparable to that of MoND, yet it needs no adjustable parameter. As a further critical test, quantised inertia uniquely predicts a sp…
Observations of the baryon to dark matter fraction in galaxies through cosmic time are a fundamental test for galaxy formation models. Recent observational studies have suggested that some disk galaxies at $z>1$ host declining rotation curves, in contrast with observations of low redshift disk galaxies where stellar or HI rotation curves flatten at large radii. We present an observational counterexample, a galaxy named DSFG850.95 at $z=1.555$ (4.1 Gyr after the big bang) that hosts a flat rotation curve between radii of $\sim$6--14 kpc (1.2--2.8 disk scale lengths) and has a dark matter fracti…
The nature of dark energy may be probed by the derivative $Q=\left.dq(z)/dz\right|_0$ at redshift $z=0$ of the deceleration parameter $q(z)$. It is probably static if $Q<1$ or dynamic if $Q>2.5$, supporting $Λ$CDM or, respectively, $Λ=(1-q)H^2$, where $H$ denotes the Hubble parameter. We derive $q=1-\left(4πa_0/cH\right)^{2}$, enabling a determination of $q(z)$ by measurement of Milgrom's parameter $a_0(z)$ in galaxy rotation curves, equivalent to the coefficient $A$ in the Tully-Fisher relation $V^4_c=AM_b$ between rotation velocity $V_c$ and baryonic mass $M_b$. We infer that dark matter sho…
Double-peaked narrow emission lines in active galactic nucleus (AGN) spectra can be produced by AGN outflows, rotation, or dual AGNs, which are AGN pairs in ongoing galaxy mergers. Consequently, double-peaked narrow AGN emission lines are useful tracers of the coevolution of galaxies and their supermassive black holes, as driven by AGN feedback and AGN fueling. We investigate this concept further with follow-up optical longslit observations of a sample of 95 Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) galaxies that have double-peaked narrow AGN emission lines. Based on a kinematic analysis of the longslit…
We derive a formula for the velocity distribution of an axially symmetric galaxy where the mass density is corrected using the mass formula from special relativity. We take some reasonable test mass densities and numerically compute the resulting galaxy rotation curves. We then compare these to the rotation curves obtained from a similar formula without a relativistic correction factor. We find that the correction factor has a small dark-matter like effect. Finally, we compare these to the corresponding Keplerian velocity curves. We find that there is a large discrepancy in this case, where aw…
We present a radio and optical study of the double-double radio galaxy J1328+2752 based on new low-frequency GMRT observations and SDSS data. The radio data were used to investigate the morphology and to perform a spectral index analysis. In this source we find that the inner double is misaligned by $\sim$30$^\circ$ from the axis of the outer diffuse structure. The SDSS spectrum shows that the central component has double-peaked line profiles with different emission strengths. The average velocity off-set of the two components is 235$\pm$10.5 km s$^{-1}$. The misaligned radio morphology along …
We present results of a study comparing the relative velocity of $\rm Lyα$ absorbers to the rotation velocity of nearby galaxy disks in the local universe ($z \leq 0.03$). We have obtained rotation curves via long-slit spectroscopy of eight galaxies with the Southern African Large Telescope, and combine this dataset with an additional 16 galaxies with data from the literature. Each galaxy appears within $3R_{\rm vir}$ of a QSO sightline with archival Cosmic Origin Spectrograph (COS) spectra. We study the velocity orientation of absorbers with respect to nearby galaxy's rotation, and compare wi…

To study some characteristics of the interstellar medium, observational data of pulsars with large Faraday rotation values (|RM|> 300 rad / m2) were used. It was suggested and justified that large |RM| values can be due to the contribution of the regions with increased electron concentration, projected on the pulsar. Most likely these are the HII regions, dark nebulae and molecular clouds. In these objects the magnetic field can be oriented in the direction of a large-scale field of the Galaxy, or simply is a deformed extension of the galactic field. It was shown that the Galactic distribution…
We use the galaxy rotation curves in the SPARC database to compare 9 different dark matter and modified gravity models on an equal footing, paying special attention to the stellar mass-to-light ratios. We compare three non-interacting dark matter models, a self interacting DM (SIDM) model, two hadronically interacting DM (HIDM) models, and three modified Newtonian dynamics type models: MOND, Radial Acceleration Relation (RAR) and a maximal-disk model. The models with DM-gas interactions generate a disky component in the dark matter, which significantly improves the fits to the rotation curves …
We study the rotational motion of the galaxy cluster Abell 2107 at redshift z = 0.04 and its connection to nearby large-scale structures using a large amount of spectroscopic redshift data. By combining 978 new redshifts from the MMT/Hectospec observations with data in the literature, we construct a large sample of 1968 galaxies with measured redshifts at clustercentric radius $R < 60^\prime$. Our sample has high (80%) and spatially uniform completeness at r-band apparent magnitude $m_{r,\textrm{Petro},0}$ < 19.1. We first apply the caustic method to the sample and identify 285 member galaxies…
Supermassive black hole (SMBH) binaries residing at the core of merging galaxies are recently found to be strongly affected by the rotation of their host galaxies. The highly eccentric orbits that form when the host is counterrotating emit strong bursts of gravitational waves that propel rapid SMBH binary coalescence. Most prior work, however, focused on planar orbits and a uniform rotation profile, an unlikely interaction configuration. However, the coupling between rotation and SMBH binary evolution appears to be such a strong dynamical process that it warrants further investigation. This st…
In this manuscript, an interesting method is proposed to test dual core system for double-peaked narrow emission lines, through precious dual core system with double-peaked narrow Balmer lines in one system in main galaxy but with single-peaked narrow Balmer lines in the other system in companion galaxy. Under a dual core system, considering narrow Balmer (H$α$ and H$β$) emissions ($f_{e,~α}$ and $f_{e,~β}$) from companion galaxy but covered by SDSS fiber for the main galaxy and narrow Balmer emissions ($f_{c,~α}$ and $f_{c,~β}$) from the companion galaxy covered by SDSS fiber for the companio…
Selecting disk galaxies from the cosmological, hydrodynamical simulation Magneticum Pathfinder we show that almost half of our poster child disk galaxies at $z=2$ show significantly declining rotation curves and low dark matter fractions, very similar to recently reported observations. These galaxies do not show any anomalous behavior, reside in standard dark matter halos and typically grow significantly in mass until $z = 0$, where they span all morphological classes, including disk galaxies matching present day rotation curves and observed dark matter fractions. Our findings demonstrate that…
We use a compilation of disc galaxy rotation curves to assess the role of the luminous component ("baryons") in the rotation curve diversity problem. As in earlier work, we find that rotation curve shape correlates with baryonic surface density: high surface density galaxies have rapidly-rising rotation curves consistent with cuspy cold dark matter halos; slowly-rising rotation curves (characteristic of galaxies with inner mass deficits or "cores") occur only in low surface density galaxies. The correlation, however, seems too weak to be the main driver of the diversity. In addition, dwarf gal…
The lenticular galaxy IC 676 is a barred galaxy with double nuclei and active star formation in the central region. In this work we present the long-slit spectroscopy and archival multi-wavelength images to investigate the nature and origin of the double nuclei in IC 676. Through photometric 1D brightness profiles and 2D image decomposition, we show that this galaxy consists of a stellar bar with the length of $\sim$ 2.5 kpc and two Sérsic disks both of which with Sérsic index $\it n \sim$ 1.3. There is probably little or no bulge component assembled in IC 676. The luminosities of the double n…
Many recent integral integral field spectroscopy (IFS) survey teams have used stellar kinematic maps combined with imaging to statistically infer the underlying distributions of galaxy intrinsic shapes. With now several IFS samples at our disposal, the method, which was originally proposed by M. Franx and collaborators in 1991, is gaining in popularity, having been so far applied to ATLAS3D, SAMI, MANGA and MASSIVE. We present results showing that a commonly assumed relationship between dynamical and intrinsic shape alignment does not hold in Illustris, affecting our ability to recover accurat…
Magnetic fields can play an important role in the energy balance and formation of gas structures in galaxies. However, their dynamical effect on the rotation curve of galaxies is immensely unexplored. We investigate the dynamical effect of the known magnetic arms of $NGC\;6946$ on its circular gas rotation traced in HI, considering two dark matter mass density models, ISO, and the universal NFW profile. We used a three-dimensional model for the magnetic field structure to fit the modeled rotation curve to the observed data via an $χ$-squared minimization method. The shape of the HI gas rotatio…
We present a study on the dwarf lenticular galaxy MCG+08-22-082 (U141) located in the Ursa Major cluster, which is blue centered, double cored, and has a boxy appearance. Using publicly available data from the SDSS, we perform an analysis of structural and stellar population properties of the galaxy and the cores. We find that the light profile of U141 follows an exponential law. U141 has a brightness Mr = -16.01 mag, and an effective radius Re = 1.7 kpc. The boxiness parameter, a4/a, is mostly between 0 and -0.05 in the inner parts, reaching an extreme of about -0.1. Double cores are seen at …
We present a pilot analysis of the influence of galaxy stellar mass and cluster environment on the probability of slow rotation in 22 central galaxies at mean redshift $z=0.07$. This includes new integral-field observations of 5 central galaxies selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, observed with the SPIRAL integral-field spectrograph on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. The composite sample presented here spans a wide range of stellar masses, $10.9<$log(M$_{*}/$M$_{\odot})<12.0$, and are embedded in halos ranging from groups to clusters, $12.9<$log(M$_{200}/$M$_{\odot})<15.6$. We find a m…
Using the GADGET-2 N-body code, we make a study of the galaxy morphology and merging time due to two interacting galaxies (for the same types and different sizes and masses, $1:1$ and $1:10$ ratio masses) merging due to gravity interaction. This is done for different initial relative orientation and rotation of these galaxies (modes of interaction) but with the same relative bulge separation and the same relative initial velocities. It was found that the resulting galaxy morphology resemble many of the observed galaxies in our Universe, and that, in general, a binary galaxy system with 1:10 ma…
A unified parametrization of the circular velocity, which accurately fits 850 galaxy rotation curves without needing in advance the knowledge of the luminous matter components, nor a fixed dark matter halo model, is proposed. A notable feature is that the associated gravitational potential increases with the distance from the galaxy center, giving rise to a length scale indicating a finite size of a galaxy, and after, the Keplerian fall-off of the parametrized circular velocity is recovered according to Newtonian gravity, making possible the estimation of the total mass enclosed by the galaxy.
Helical randomization of magnetized Galactic and galaxy clusters plasmas: from magnetorotational disc dynamo to the Faraday rotation and synchrotron emission skies
Observations suggest a slower stellar rotation relative to gas rotation in the outer part of the Milky Way Galaxy. This difference could be attributed to an interaction with the interstellar magnetic field. In a simple model, fields of order 10 micro Gauss are then required, consistently with the observed values. This coincidence suggests a tool for estimating magnetic fields in spiral galaxies. A North-South asymmetry in the rotation of gas in the Galaxy could be of magnetic origin too.
Faraday rotation provides a valuable tracer of magnetic fields in the interstellar medium; catalogs of Faraday rotation measures provide key observations for studies of the Galactic magnetic field. We present a new catalog of rotation measures derived from the Canadian Galactic Plane Survey, covering a large region of the Galactic plane spanning 52 deg < l < 192 deg, -3 deg < b < 5 deg, along with northern and southern latitude extensions around l ~ 105 deg. We have derived rotation measures for 2234 sources (4 of which are known pulsars), 75% of which have no previous measurements, over an ar…
We report the outcome of multifrequency radio observations of a double-double radio source J1706+4340 carried out with the Very Large Array and Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope. After supplementing our own data with those available in the literature, we collected a considerable set of radio measurements covering the range from 74 to 8460 MHz. This has enabled us to perform a comprehensive review of physical properties of the source and its dynamical evolution analysis. In particular, we found that, while the age of the large-scale outer lobes is in the range 260-300 Myr, the renewal of the jet …
The flattening of spiral-galaxy rotation curves is unnatural in view of the expectations from Kepler's third law and a central mass. It is interesting, however, that the radius-independence velocity is what one expects in one less dimension. In our three-dimensional space, the rotation curve is natural if, outside the galaxy's center, the gravitational potential corresponds to that of a very prolate ellipsoid, filament, string, or otherwise cylindrical structure perpendicular to the galactic plane. While there is observational evidence (and numerical simulations) for filamentary structure at l…
Stellar prolate rotation in dwarf galaxies is rather uncommon, with only two known galaxies in the Local Group showing such feature (Phoenix and And II). Cosmological simulations show that in massive early-type galaxies prolate rotation likely arises from major mergers. However, the origin of such kinematics in the dwarf galaxies regime has only been explored using idealized simulations. Here we made use of hydrodynamical cosmological simulations of dwarfs galaxies with stellar mass between $3\times10^5$ and $5\times10^8$ M$_{\odot}$ to explore the formation of prolate rotators. Out of $27$ dw…
The shape and diversity of dwarf galaxy rotation curves is at apparent odds with dark matter halos in a $Λ$ Cold Dark Matter ($Λ$CDM) cosmology. We use mock data from isolated dwarf galaxy simulations to show that this owes to three main effects. Firstly, stellar feedback heats dark matter, leading to a 'coreNFW' dark matter density profile with a slowly rising rotation curve. Secondly, if close to a recent starburst, large HI bubbles push the rotation curve out of equilibrium, deforming the rotation curve shape. Thirdly, when galaxies are viewed near face-on, their best fit inclination is bia…
Among the large varieties of active galactic nuclei (AGN) known, narrow line Seyfert 1 (NLSy1) galaxies are a puzzling class, particularly after the discovery of $γ$-ray emission in a handful of them using observations from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Here, we report the discovery of a rare large double lobed radio source with its radio core associated with a NLSy1 galaxy SDSS J103024.95+551622.7 at z = 0.435. The lobe separation is 116 kpc which is the second largest known projected size among NLSy1 radio sources. This finding is based on the analysis of 1.4 GHz data from the Faint I…
Modeling the luminous mass components of spiral galaxies in standard gravity poses a challenge due to the missing mass problem. However, with the addition of cold dark matter, the missing mass problem can be circumvented at the cost of additional free parameters to the theory. The Luminous Convolution Model (LCM) reconsiders how we interpret rotation curve data, such that Doppler-shifted spectra measurements can constrain luminous mass discovery. For a sample of 25 galaxies of varying morphologies and sizes, we demonstrate an ansatz for relative galaxy curvatures that can explain the missing m…
We report the discovery of a double-peaked Lyman-alpha profile in a galaxy at $z=6.803$, A370p\_z1, in the parallel Frontier Field of Abell 370. The velocity separation between the blue and red peaks of the Lyman-$α$ profile ($Δv=101_{-19}^{+38} (\pm48)\,\text{km s}^{-1}$) suggests an extremely high escape fraction of ionising photons $> 59(51)\% (2σ)$. The spectral energy distribution indicates a young ($50$ Myr), star-forming ($12\pm 6 \, \rm{M}_\odot \rm{yr}^{-1}$) galaxy with an IRAC excess implying strong [OIII]+H$β$ emission. On the basis of the high escape fraction measured, we demonstr…
The application of Bayesian techniques to astronomical data is generally non-trivial because the fitting parameters can be strongly degenerated and the formal uncertainties are themselves uncertain. An example is provided by the contradictory claims over the presence or absence of a universal acceleration scale (g$_\dagger$) in galaxies based on Bayesian fits to rotation curves. To illustrate the situation, we present an analysis in which the Newtonian gravitational constant $G_N$ is allowed to vary from galaxy to galaxy when fitting rotation curves from the SPARC database, in analogy to $g_{\…
We report the discovery of a double-double radio source (DDRS) J0028+0035. We observed it with LOFAR, GMRT, and the VLA. By combining our observational data with those from the literature, we gathered an appreciable set of radio flux density measurements covering the range from 74 MHz to 14 GHz. This enabled us to carry out an extensive review of physical properties of the source and its dynamical evolution analysis. In particular, we found that, while the age of the large-scale outer lobes is about 245 Myr, the renewal of the jet activity, which is directly responsible for the double-double s…
We constrain the rotational kinematic Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (rkSZ) effect in Planck data using a sample of rotating galaxy clusters identified in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We extract cluster-centered cutouts from Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) maps that have been cleaned of thermal SZ signal. Using previous constraints on the cluster rotation vectors determined from the motions of galaxies, we fit for the amplitude of the rkSZ effect in the CMB cutouts, marginalizing over parameters describing the cluster electron distribution. We also employ an alternative, less model-depend…
Assessing the likelihood that the rotation curve of a galaxy matches predictions from galaxy formation simulations requires that the uncertainties in the circular speed as a function of radius derived from the observational data be statistically robust. Few uncertainties presented in the literature meet this requirement. In this paper we present a new standalone tool, makemap, that estimates the fitted velocity at each pixel from Gauss-Hermite fits to a 3D spectral data cube, together with its uncertainty obtained from a modified bootstrap procedure. We apply this new tool to neutral hydrogen …
We study the magnetic fields in galaxy clusters through Faraday rotation measurements crossing systems in different dynamical states. We confirm that magnetic fields are present in those systems and analyze the difference between relaxed and unrelaxed samples with respect to the dispersion between their inherent Faraday Rotation measurements. We found an increase of this RM dispersion and a higher RM overlapping frequency for unrelaxed clusters. This fact suggests that a large scale physical process is involved in the nature of unrelaxed systems and possible depolarization effects are present …
We present our discovery of observational evidence for the coherence between galaxy rotation and the average line-of-sight motion of neighbors. We use the Calar Alto Legacy Integral Field Area (CALIFA) survey data analyzed with the Python CALIFA STARLIGHT Synthesis Organizer (PyCASSO) platform, and the NASA-Sloan Atlas (NSA) catalog. After estimating the projected angular momentum vectors of 445 CALIFA galaxies, we build composite maps of their neighbor galaxies on the parameter space of line-of-sight velocity versus projected distance. The composite radial profiles of the luminosity-weighted …
We compare six models (including the baryonic model, two dark matter models, two modified Newtonian dynamics models and one modified gravity model) in accounting for the galaxy rotation curves. For the dark matter models, we assume NFW profile and core-modified profile for the dark halo, respectively. For the modified Newtonian dynamics models, we discuss Milgrom's MOND theory with two different interpolation functions, i.e. the standard and the simple interpolation functions. As for the modified gravity, we focus on Moffat's MSTG theory. We fit these models to the observed rotation curves of …
We study the possible rotation of cluster galaxies, developing, testing and applying a novel algorithm which identifies rotation, if such does exist, as well as its rotational centre, its axis orientation, rotational velocity amplitude and, finally, the clockwise or counterclockwise direction of rotation on the plane of the sky. To validate our algorithms we construct realistic Monte Carlo mock rotating clusters and confirm that our method provides robust indications of rotation. We then apply our methodology on a sample of Abell clusters with z<~0.1 with member galaxies selected from the Sloa…
