We present a simple one-dimensional example of a spin 1/2 particle submitted to a delta-type potential which interacs differently with the two components of the wavefunction and to an external magnetic field. It has two coupled channels, admits a closed solution and features the Feshbach resonance phenomenon by proper tunning of the magnetic field.
We employ a quantum defect theory framework to provide a detailed analysis of the interplay between a magnetic Feshbach resonance and a shape resonance in cold collisions of ultracold $\rm ^{87}Rb$ atoms as captured in recent experiments using a laser-based collider [Phys. Rev. Research 3, 033209 (2021)]. By exerting control over a parameter space spanned by both collision energy and magnetic field, the width of a Feshbach resonance can be tuned over several orders of magnitude. We apply a quantum defect theory specialized for ultracold atomic collisions to fully describe of the experimental o…
Feshbach resonances in ultracold collisions often result from an interplay between many collision channels. Simple two-channel models can be introduced to capture the basic features, but cannot fully reproduce the situation when several resonances from different closed channels contribute to the scattering process. Using the formalism of multichannel quantum defect theory we develop an analytical model of overlapping Feshbach resonances. We find a general formula for the variation of the scattering length with magnetic field in the vicinity of an arbitrary number of resonances, characterized b…
We use the dressed potentials obtained in the adiabatic representation of two coupled channels to calculate s-wave Feshbach resonances in a 3D spherically symmetric potential with an open channel interacting with a closed channel. Analytic expressions for the s-wave scattering length $a$ and number of resonances are obtained for a piecewise constant model with a piecewise constant interaction of the open and closed channels near the origin. We show analytically and numerically that, for strong enough coupling strength, Feshbach resonances can exist even when the closed channel does {\em not} h…
Feshbach resonances are among the essential control tools used in ultracold atom experiments. However, for complex atomic species the theoretical characterization of resonances becomes challenging. For closely spaced resonances, the measurement of three-body losses does not provide sufficient resolution to discriminate them. For this reason, resonance spectroscopy of trapped isolated atoms is becoming the state of the art. Here we show that trapping the atoms in a double well potential such as an optical lattice or a pair of optical tweezers enables precise characterization of not only the res…
Using an optically-trapped mixture of the two lowest hyperfine states of a $^6$Li Fermi gas, we observe two-field optical tuning of the narrow Feshbach resonance by up to 3 G and an increase in spontaneous lifetime near the broad resonance from $0.5$ ms to $0.4$ s. We present a new model of light-induced loss spectra, employing continuum-dressed basis states, that agrees in shape and magnitude with measurements for both broad and narrow resonances.
We consider a pair of atoms in an arbitrary trapping potential in the presence of magnetically tunable Feshbach resonance. We find the energy levels and occupation of the bound molecular states taking into account possible coupling between center of mass and relative motion induced by the trap. As a specific example we discuss the case of different atomic species in harmonic potential, where each atom feels different trapping frequency.
In the vicinity of a narrow Feshbach resonances Efimov features are expected to be characterized by the resonance's properties rather than the van der Waals length of the interatomic potential. Although this theoretical prediction is well-established by now, it still lacks experimental confirmation. Here, we apply our recently developed three-channel model [Yudkin and Khaykovich, Phys. Rev. A 103, 063303 (2021)] to the experimental result obtained in a mass-imbalanced $^6$Li-$^{133}$Cs mixture in the vicinity of the narrowest resonance explored to date [Johansen at. al. Nat. Phys. 13, 731 (201…
Complex quantum systems consisting of large numbers of strongly coupled states exhibit characteristic level repulsion, leading to a non-Poisson spacing distribution which can be described by Random Matrix Theory. Scattering resonances observed in ultracold atomic and molecular systems exhibit similar features as a consequence of their energy level structure. We study how the overlap between Feshbach resonances affects the distribution of resonance spacings. The spectrum of strongly overlapping resonances turns out to be non-Poisson even when the assumptions of Random Matrix Theory are not fulf…
Feshbach resonances in ultra-cold atomic gases have led to some of the most important advances in atomic physics. They did not only enable ground breaking work in the BEC-BCS crossover regime [1], but are also widely used for the association of ultra-cold molecules [2], leading to the formation of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates [3,4] and ultra-cold dipolar molecular systems [5]. Here, we demonstrate the experimental realization of an optical Feshbach resonance using ultra-long range Rydberg molecules [6]. We show their practical use by tuning the revival time of a quantum many-body system…
We present a multichannel quantum-defect theory for magnetic Feshbach resonances in the interaction of two heteronuclear group I atoms. The theory provides a unified and a uniform description of resonances in all partial waves, and enables the characterization of large number of resonances in terms of very few parameters. For the sample system of $^6$Li$^{40}$K, we present descriptions of all resonances in $aa$, $ab$, and $ba$ channels, in partial waves $s$ ($l=0$) through $h$ ($l=5$), and in a magnetic field of 0 through 1000 Gauss. All resonances, including those in nonzero partial waves, ar…
We have studied magnetic Feshbach resonances in an ultracold sample of Na prepared in the absolute hyperfine ground state. We report on the observation of three s-, eight d-, and three g-wave Feshbach resonances, including a more precise determination of two known s-wave resonances, and one s-wave resonance at a magnetic field exceeding 200mT. Using a coupled-channels calculation we have improved the sodium ground-state potentials by taking into account these new experimental data, and derived values for the scattering lengths. In addition, a description of the molecular states leading to the …
We reveal the existence of high-density Feshbach resonances in the collision between the ground and metastable states of $^{171}$Yb and coherently produce the associated Feshbach molecules by photoassociation. The extremely small transition rate is overcome by the enhanced Franck-Condon factor of the weakly bound Feshbach molecule, allowing us to observe Rabi oscillations with long decay time between an atom pair and a molecule in an optical lattice. We also perform the precision measurement of the binding energies, which characterizes the observed resonances. The ultra-narrow photoassociation…
We theoretically evaluate the feasibility to form magnetically-tunable Feshbach molecules in collisions between fermionic $^6$Li atoms and bosonic metastable $^{174}$Yb($^3$P$_2$) atoms. In contrast to the well-studied alkali-metal atom collisions, collisions with meta-stable atoms are highly anisotropic. Our first-principle coupled-channel calculation of these collisions reveals the existence of broad Feshbach resonances due to the combined effect of anisotropic-molecular and atomic-hyperfine interactions. In order to fit our predictions to the specific positions of experimentally-observed br…
We report the observation of resonance-like loss in the trap population of ultracold dysprosium as a function of magnetic field, which we attribute to anisotropy-induced Fano-Feshbach resonances arising from Dy's large magnetic dipole moment and nonzero electronic orbital angular momentum. We recorded these resonances for four different isotopes, three bosonic and one fermionic, over a field range of 0-6 G and show that the number of resonances changes significantly as a function of temperature, even in the nK regime. Most of the observed resonances are of very narrow width. The fermionic isot…
We explore the anisotropic nature of Feshbach resonances in the collision between ultracold magnetic submerged-shell dysprosium atoms, which can only occur due to couplings to rotating bound states. This is in contrast to well-studied alkali-metal atom collisions, where most Feshbach resonances are hyperfine induced and due to rotation-less bound states. Our novel first-principle coupled-channel calculation of the collisions between open-4f-shell spin-polarized bosonic dysprosium reveals a striking correlation between the anisotropy due to magnetic dipole-dipole and electrostatic interactions …
We perform Feshbach spectroscopy in an ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{40}$K with different spin-state combinations. We have observed 24 new interspecies Feshbach resonances at magnetic field up to 350 G. A full coupled-channel calculation is performed to assign these resonances. Among them, 12 resonances are identified as d-wave Feshbach resonances. These d-wave Feshbach resonances are about 5 G systematically smaller than the predications based on previous model potential. Taking into account these new experimental results, we improve the Born-Oppenheimer potentials between Na and K, a…
Ultracold atomic gases have realised numerous paradigms of condensed matter physics where control over interactions has crucially been afforded by tunable Feshbach resonances. So far, the characterisation of these Feshbach resonances has almost exclusively relied on experiments in the threshold regime near zero energy. Here we use a laser-based collider to probe a narrow magnetic Feshbach resonance of rubidium above threshold. By measuring the overall atomic loss from colliding clouds as a function of magnetic field, we track the energy-dependent resonance position. At higher energy, our colli…
Helium atoms in the metastable $2^3{S_{1}}$ state (He$^*$) have unique advantages for ultracold atomic experiments. However, there is no known accessible Feshbach resonance in He$^*$, which could be used to manipulate the scattering length and hence unlock several new experimental possiblities. Previous experimental and theoretical studies for He$^*$ have produced contradictory results. We aimed to resolve this discrepancy with a theoretical search for Feshbach resonances, using a new close-coupled model of He$^*$ collisions in the presence of an external magnetic field. Several resonances wer…
We present an analytic model to calculate the atomic scattering length near a Feshbach resonance from data on the molecular binding energy. Our approach considers finite-range square-well potentials and can be applied near broad, narrow, or even overlapping Feshbach resonances. We test our model on Cs$_2$ Feshbach molecules. We measure the binding energy using magnetic-field modulation spectroscopy in a range where one broad and two narrow Feshbach resonances overlap. From the data we accurately determine the Cs atomic scattering length and the positions and widths of two particular resonances…
We study ultracold three-body collisions of bosons and fermions when the interatomic interaction is tuned near a narrow Feshbach resonance. We show that the width of the resonance has a substantial impact on the collisional properties of ultracold gases in the strongly interacting regime. We obtain numerical and analytical results that allow us to identify universal features related to the resonance width. For narrow resonances, we have found a suppression of all inelastic processes in boson systems leading to deeply bound states and an enhancement for fermion systems.
We report on the experimental observation of Feshbach resonances in large mass-imbalance mixtures of Erbium (Er) and Lithium (Li). All combinations between ${}^{168}$Er, ${}^{166}$Er and ${}^7$Li, ${}^6$Li are cooled to temperatures of a few microkelvin, partially by means of sympathetic cooling together with Ytterbium (Yb) as a third mixture component. The Er-Li inelastic interspecies collisional properties are studied for magnetic fields up to 680 G. In all cases resonant interspecies loss features, indicative of Feshbach resonances, have been observed. While most resonances have sub-Gauss w…
Starting from a multichannel quantum-defect theory, we derive analytic descriptions of a magnetic Feshbach resonance in an arbitrary partial wave $l$, and the atomic interactions around it. An analytic formula, applicable to both broad and narrow resonances of arbitrary $l$, is presented for ultracold atomic scattering around a Feshbach resonance. Other related issues addressed include (a) the parametrization of a magnetic Feshbach resonance of arbitrary $l$, (b) rigorous definitions of "broad" and "narrow" resonances of arbitrary $l$ and their different scattering characteristics, and (c) the…
We measure higher partial wave Feshbach resonances in an ultracold mixture of fermionic $^6$Li and bosonic $^{133}$Cs by magnetic field dependent atom-loss spectroscopy. For the $p$-wave Feshbach resonances we observe triplet structures corresponding to different projections of the pair rotation angular momentum onto the external magnetic field axis. We attribute the splittings to the spin-spin and spin-rotation couplings by modelling the observation using a full coupled-channel calculation. Comparison with an oversimplified model, estimating the spin-rotation coupling by describing the weakly…
We study collision of two atoms with formation of Feshbach resonance at combined interaction with the external magnetic field and laser radiation. In cases of one- and two-photon resonances of laser radiation with two discrete vibrational molecular levels, we show that Feshbach resonances appear at interaction of external magnetic field with dressed states formed via Autler-Townes effect. In addition, in case of one-photon resonance the lower vibrational molecular state is coupled by laser radiation with the continuum of the elastic channel and forms laser-induced Feshbach resonance via both A…
Ultracold gases of interacting spin-orbit coupled fermions are predicted to display exotic phenomena such as topological superfluidity and its associated Majorana fermions. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a route to strongly-interacting single-component atomic Fermi gases by combining an s-wave Feshbach resonance (giving strong interactions) and spin-orbit coupling (creating an effective p-wave channel). We identify the Feshbach resonance by its associated atomic loss feature and show that, in agreement with our single-channel scattering model, this feature is preserved and shifted as a fu…
We show that radiofrequency (RF) radiation may be used to create Feshbach resonances in ultracold gases of alkali-metal atoms at desired magnetic fields that are convenient for atomic cooling and degeneracy. For the case of $^{39}$K+$^{133}$Cs, where there are no RF-free resonances in regions where Cs may be cooled to degeneracy, we show that a resonance may be created near 21~G with 69.2~MHz RF radiation. This resonance is almost lossless with circularly polarized RF, and the molecules created are long-lived even with plane-polarized RF.
We present a detailed study of interspecies Feshbach resonances of the bosonic $^{23}\mathrm{Na}+$$^{39}\mathrm{K}$ mixture for magnetic fields up to $750 \, \mathrm{G}$ in various collision channels. A total of fourteen Feshbach resonances are reported, as well as four zero crossings of the scattering length and three inelastic two-body loss features. We use the observed magnetic field locations of the resonant features together with the known data on $^{23}\mathrm{Na}+$$^{40}\mathrm{K}$ to refine the singlet and triplet ground state potentials of NaK and achieve a consistent description of F…
We demonstrate a p$-wave optical Feshbach resonance (OFR) using purely long-range molecular states of a fermionic isotope of ytterbium ^{171}Yb, following the proposition made by K. Goyal et al. [Phys. Rev. A 82, 062704 (2010)]. The p-wave OFR is clearly observed as a modification of a photoassociation rate for atomic ensembles at about 5 micro-Kelvins. A scattering phase shift variation of δη=0.022 rad is observed with an atom loss rate coefficient K=28.0*10^{-12} cm^3/s.
Motivated by the prospect of observing Efimov and Bose polaron physics in ultracold mixtures of bosonic atoms with large mass imbalance, this work investigates the magnetic Feshbach resonances between $^{7}\text{Li}$ and $^{133}\text{Cs}$. The resonances are predicted at the 1 gauss level using the model of Pires et al. [Phys. Rev. A, 90, 012710] obtained from experimental observations of resonances between $^{6}\text{Li}$ and $^{133}\text{Cs}$. It is found that a few resonances in a practical range of magnetic field intensity could be used to tune the scattering length between $^{7}\text{Li}$…
We report on the experimental observation of a novel inter-orbital Feshbach resonance in ultracold 173-Yb atoms, which opens the possibility of tuning the interactions between the 1S0 and 3P0 metastable state, both possessing vanishing total electronic angular momentum. The resonance is observed at experimentally accessible magnetic field strengths and occurs universally for all hyperfine state combinations. We characterize the resonance in the bulk via inter-orbital cross-thermalization as well as in a three-dimensional lattice using high-resolution clock-line spectroscopy.
We report on the observation of dipolar splitting in 6Li p-wave Feshbach resonances by highresolution atom-loss spectroscopy. The Feshbach resonances at 159 G and 215 G exhibit a doublet structure of 10 mG and 13 mG, respectively, associated with different projections of the orbital angular momentum. The observed splittings agree very well with coupled-channel calculations. We map out the temperature dependence of the atom-loss spectrum allowing us to extrapolate resonance positions and the corresponding widths to zero temperature. The observed dipolar splitting in fermionic lithium might be u…
We have observed Feshbach resonances for 133Cs atoms in two different hyperfine states at ultra-low static magnetic fields by using an atomic fountain clock. The extreme sensitivity of our setup allows for high signal-to-noise-ratio observations at densities of only 2*10^7 cm^{-3}. We have reproduced these resonances using coupled-channels calculations which are in excellent agreement with our measurements. We justify that these are s-wave resonances involving weakly-bound states of the triplet molecular Hamiltonian, identify the resonant closed channels, and explain the observed multi-peak st…
We observe new Feshbach resonances in ultracold mixtures of $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb atoms in the $^{85}$Rb$|2, +2\rangle$+$^{87}$Rb$|1, +1\rangle$ and $^{85}$Rb$|2, -2\rangle$+$^{87}$Rb$|1, -1\rangle$ scattering channels. The positions and properties of the resonances are predicted and characterized using the semi-analytic multichannel quantum-defect theory by Gao. Of particular interest, a number of broad entrance-channel dominated p-wave resonances are identified, implicating exciting opportunities for studying a variety of p-wave interaction dominated physics.
We report on the observation of nineteen interspecies Feshbach resonances in an optically trapped ultracold Bose-Fermi mixture of ^{133}Cs and ^{6}Li in the two energetically lowest spin states. We assign the resonances to s- and p-wave molecular channels by a coupled-channels calculation, resulting in an accurate determination of LiCs ground state potentials. Fits of the resonance position based on the undressed Asymptotic Bound State model do not provide the same level of accuracy as the coupled-channels calculation. Several broad s-wave resonances provide prospects to create fermionic LiCs …
We present a study of interspecies Feshbach resonances in ultracold $^{7}$Li-$^{133}$Cs Bose-Bose mixtures. We locate ten interspecies resonances in three different spin-state combinations. By comparing to coupled-channel calculations, we assign six of the resonances to $s$-wave channels and the rest to $p$-wave channels. We use the $s$-wave resonances to refine the ground-state potentials of LiCs in the coupled-channel calculations and then obtain an accurate characterization of the scattering and bound-state properties of the mixtures. Our results will be useful for future experiments with u…
We report on the observation of heteronuclear magnetic Feshbach resonances in several isotope mixtures of the highly magnetic elements erbium and dysprosium. Among many narrow features, we identify two resonances with a width greater than one Gauss. We characterize one of these resonances, in a mixture of $^{168}$Er and $^{164}$Dy, in terms of loss rates and elastic cross section, and observe a temperature dependence of the on-resonance loss rate suggestive of a universal scaling associated with broad resonances. Our observations hold promise for the use of such a resonance for tuning the inte…
The ultracold mixture of \Na and \Rb atoms has become an important system for investigating physics in Bose-Bose atomic mixtures and for forming ultracold ground-state polar molecules. In this work, we provide an improved characterization of the most commonly used Feshbach resonance near 347.64 G between \Na and \Rb in their absolute ground states. We form Feshbach molecules using this resonance and measure their binding energies by dissociating them via magnetic field modulation. We use the binding energies to refine the singlet and triplet potential energy curves, using coupled-channel bound…
We develop and analyze a theoretical model which yields the shifts and widths of Feshbach resonances in an atomic waveguide. It is based on a multichannel approach for confinement-induced resonances (CIRs) and atomic transitions in the waveguides in the multimode regime. We replace in this scheme the single-channel scalar interatomic interaction by the four-channel tensorial potential modeling resonances of broad, narrow and overlapping character according to the two-channel parametrization of A.D.Lange et al. As an input the experimentally known parameters of Feshbach resonances in the absenc…
We propose and experimentally investigate a scheme for observing Feshbach resonances in atomic quantum gases in situ and with a high temporal resolution of several ten nanoseconds. The method is based on the detection of molecular ions, which are optically generated from atom pairs at small interatomic distances. As test system we use a standard rubidium gas (87Rb) with well known magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances. The fast speed and the high sensitivity of our detection scheme allows to observe a complete Feshbach resonance within one millisecond and without destroying the gas.
We report a theoretical study of Feshbach resonances in $^{6}$Li + $^{23}$Na and $^{7}$Li + $^{23}$Na mixtures at ultracold temperatures using new accurate interaction potentials in a full quantum coupled-channel calculation. Feshbach resonances for $l=0$ in the initial collisional open channel $^6$Li$(f=1/2, m_f=1/2) + ^{23}$Na$(f=1, m_f=1)$ are found to agree with previous measurements, leading to precise values of the singlet and triplet scattering lengths for the $^{6,7}$Li$+^{23}$Na pairs. We also predict additional Feshbach resonances within experimentally attainable magnetic fields for …
We have investigated magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances arising from the interaction of Li($^2S$) with metastable Yb($^3P_2$) and ($^3P_0$). For Yb($^3P_2$), all the resonance features are strongly suppressed by inelastic collisions that produce Yb in its lower-lying $^3P_1$ and $^3P_0$ states. For Yb($^3P_0$), sharp resonances exist but they are extremely narrow (widths less than 1 mG).
We report a unique feature of magnetic field Feshbach resonances in which atoms collide with non-zero orbital angular momentum. P-wave ($l=1$) Feshbach resonances are split into two components depending on the magnitude of the resonant state's projection of orbital angular momentum onto the field axis. This splitting is due to the magnetic dipole-dipole interaction between the atoms and it offers a means to tune anisotropic interactions of an ultra-cold gas of atoms. A parameterization of the resonance in terms of an effective range expansion is given.
We report the first observation of magnetic Feshbach resonances between ${}^{173}$Yb and $^{133}$Cs. In a mixture of Cs atoms prepared in the $(f=3, m_f=3)$ state and unpolarized fermionic ${}^{173}$Yb we observe resonant atom loss due to two sets of magnetic Feshbach resonances around 622~G and 702~G. Resonances for individual Yb nuclear spin components $m_{i,\mathrm{Yb}}$ are split by its interaction with the Cs electronic spin, which also provides the main coupling mechanism for the observed resonances. The observed splittings and relative resonance strengths are in good agreement with theo…
We calculate the three-body recombination rate into a shallow dimer in a gas of cold bosonic atoms near a Feshbach resonance using a two-channel contact interaction model. The two-channel model naturally describes the variation of the scattering length through the Feshbach resonance and has a finite effective range. We confront the theory with the available experimental data and show that the two-channel model is able to quantitatively describe the existing data. The finite effective range leads to a reduction of the scaling factor between the recombination minima from the universal value of 2…
We discover several magnetic Feshbach resonances in collisions of ultracold K(39) atoms, by studying atom losses and molecule formation. Accurate determination of the magnetic-field resonance locations allows us to optimize a quantum collision model for potassium isotopes. We employ the model to predict the magnetic-field dependence of scattering lengths and of near-threshold molecular levels. Our findings will be useful to plan future experiments on ultracold potassium atoms and molecules.
We report extentions and corrections to the measurement of the Feshbach resonance in 85Rb cold atom collisions reported earlier [J. L. Roberts et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 5109 (1998)]. In addition to a better determination of the position of the resonance peak (154.9(4) gauss) and its width (11.0(4) gauss), improvements in our techniques now allow the measurement of the absolute size of the elastic scattering rate. This provides a new measure of the s-wave scasttering length as a function of magnetic field near the Feshbach resonance and contrains the Rb-Rb interaction potential.
We show an all-optical method of making 7Li condensate using tunability of the scattering length in the proximity of a Feshbach resonance. We report the observation of two new Feshbach resonances on |F = 1;mF = 0> state. The narrow (broad) resonance of 7 G (34 G) width is detected at 831 +- 4 G (884 +4 -13 G). Position of the scattering length zero crossing between the resonances is found at 836 +- 4 G. The broad resonance is shown to be favorable for run away evaporation which we perform in a crossed-beam optical dipole trap. Starting directly form the phase space density of a magneto-optical…
Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances for polar paramagnetic ground-state diatomics are too narrow to allow for magnetoassociation starting from trapped, ultracold atoms. We show that non-resonant light can be used to engineer the Feshbach resonances in their position and width. For non-resonant field strengths of the order of $10^9\,$W/cm$^2$, we find the width to be increased by three orders of magnitude, reaching a few Gauss. This opens the way for producing ultracold molecules with sizeable electric and magnetic dipole moments and thus for many-body quantum simulations with such particl…
We present a comprehensive collection of ultracold three-body collisions properties near overlapping Feshbach resonances. Our results incorporate variations of all scattering lengths and demonstrate novel collisional behavior, such as atom-molecule interference effects. Taking advantage of the unique ways in which these collisions reflect Efimov physics, new pathways to control atomic and molecular losses open up. Further, we show that overlapping resonances can greatly improve the chances of observing multiple Efimov features in an ultracold quantum gas for nearly any system.
We model combined photoassociation and Feshbach resonances in a Bose-Einstein condensate. When the magnetic field is far-off resonance, cross coupling between the two target molecules--enabled by the shared dissociation continuum--leads to an anomalous dispersive shift in the position of laser resonance, as well as unprecedented elimination and enhancement of resonant photoassociation via quantum interference. For off-resonant lasers, a dispersive shift and quantum interference appear similarly in resonant three-body Feshbach losses, except that the Feshbach node is tunable with intensity.
We investigate the possibility of forming Li+Yb ultracold molecules by magnetoassociation in mixtures of ultracold atoms. We find that magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances exist, but are extremely narrow for even-mass ytterbium isotopes, which all have zero spin. For odd-mass Yb isotopes, however, there is a new mechanism due to hyperfine coupling between the electron spin and the Yb nuclear magnetic moment. This mechanism produces Feshbach resonances for fermionic Yb isotopes that can be more than 2 orders of magnitude larger than for the bosonic counterparts.
Feshbach resonances are commonly described by a single-resonance Feshbach model, and open-channel resonances are not taken into account explicitly. However, an open-channel resonance near threshold limits the range of validity of this model. Such a situation exists when the background scattering length is much larger than the range of the interatomic potential. The open-channel resonance introduces strong threshold effects not included in the single-resonance description. We derive an easy-to-use analytical model that takes into account both the Feshbach resonance and the open-channel resonanc…
We consider photoassociation from a state of two free atoms when the continuum state is close to a magnetic field induced Feshbach resonance and analyze Fano interference in photoassociation. We show that the minimum in photoassociation profiles characterized by the Fano asymmetry parameter $q$ is independent of laser intensity, while the maximum explicitly depends on laser intensity. We further discuss the possibility of nonlinear Fano effect in photoassociation near a Feshbach resonance.
We present a method for the creation and control of cold molecules that involves coherently combining Feshbach Resonances and STIRAP. We present analytical and numerical results showing how to optimize this process that can be implemented using techniques readily available in standard experimental setups. This will provide a link in the chain from atoms to ground state molecules and can serve as a building block towards more complex processes in coherent ultracold chemistry.
In a recent experiment by Yamazaki {\it et al.} [Phys.Rev. A {\bf 87} 010704 (R) (2013) ], $p$-wave optical Feshbach resonance in fermionic $^{171}$Yb atoms using purely long-range molecular excited states has been demonstrated. We theoretically show that, if two purely long range excited states of $^{171}$Yb are coupled to the ground-state continuum of scattering states with two lasers, then it is possible to significantly suppress photoassociative atom loss by a dark resonance in the excited states. We present a general theoretical framework for creating a dark state in electronically excite…
Photoassociation (PA) spectrum in the presence of a magnetic Feshbach resonance is analyzed. Nonperturbative solution of the problem yields analytical expressions for PA linewidth and shift which are applicable for arbitrary PA laser intensity and magnetic field tuning of Feshbach Resonance. We show that by tuning magnetic field close to Fano minimum, it is possible to suppress power broadening at increased laser intensities. This occurs due to quantum interference of PA transitions from unperturbed and perturbed continuum. Line narrowing at high laser intensities is accompanied by large spect…
We show that the probability of the collision-induced absorption of non-resonant microwave photons by a gas of ultracold molecules is dramatically enhanced near a Feshbach scattering resonance. This can be used for detecting Feshbach resonances of ultracold molecules by measuring the microwave field absorption and for tuning the elastic scattering cross sections of ultracold molecules by varying the frequency and intensity of the microwave field in a wide range of the field parameters.
