We theoretically evaluate the feasibility to form magnetically-tunable Feshbach molecules in collisions between fermionic $^6$Li atoms and bosonic metastable $^{174}$Yb($^3$P$_2$) atoms. In contrast to the well-studied alkali-metal atom collisions, collisions with meta-stable atoms are highly anisotropic. Our first-principle coupled-channel calculation of these collisions reveals the existence of broad Feshbach resonances due to the combined effect of anisotropic-molecular and atomic-hyperfine interactions. In order to fit our predictions to the specific positions of experimentally-observed broad resonance structures \cite{Deep2015} we optimized the shape of the short-range potentials by direct least-square fitting. This allowed us to identify the dominant resonance by its leading angular momentum quantum numbers and describe the role of collisional anisotropy in the creation and broadening of this and other resonances.
Feshbach resonances in ultra-cold atomic gases have led to some of the most important advances in atomic physics. They did not only enable ground breaking work in the BEC-BCS crossover regime [1], but are also widely used for the association of ultra-cold molecules [2], leading to the formation of molecular Bose-Einstein condensates [3,4] and ultra-cold dipolar molecular systems [5]. Here, we demonstrate the experimental realization of an optical Feshbach resonance using ultra-long range Rydberg molecules [6]. We show their practical use by tuning the revival time of a quantum many-body system…
Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances were employed to associate cold diatomic molecules in a series of experiments involving both atomic Bose as well as two spin component Fermi gases. This review illustrates theoretical concepts of both the particular nature of the highly excited Feshbach molecules produced and the techniques for their association from unbound atom pairs. Coupled channels theory provides the rigorous formulation of the microscopic physics of Feshbach resonances in cold gases. Concepts of dressed versus bare energy states, universal properties of Feshbach molecules, as wel…
We have studied magnetic Feshbach resonances in an ultracold sample of Na prepared in the absolute hyperfine ground state. We report on the observation of three s-, eight d-, and three g-wave Feshbach resonances, including a more precise determination of two known s-wave resonances, and one s-wave resonance at a magnetic field exceeding 200mT. Using a coupled-channels calculation we have improved the sodium ground-state potentials by taking into account these new experimental data, and derived values for the scattering lengths. In addition, a description of the molecular states leading to the …
We propose a novel scheme to efficiently tune the scattering length of two colliding ground-state atoms by off-resonantly coupling the scattering-state to an excited Rydberg-molecular state using laser light. For the s-wave scattering of two colliding ${^{87}}\mathrm{Rb}$ atoms, we demonstrate that the effective optical length and pole strength of this Rydberg optical Feshbach resonance can be tuned over several orders of magnitude, while incoherent processes and losses are minimised. Given the ubiquity of Rydberg molecular states, this technique should be generally applicable to homo-nuclear …
We employ a quantum defect theory framework to provide a detailed analysis of the interplay between a magnetic Feshbach resonance and a shape resonance in cold collisions of ultracold $\rm ^{87}Rb$ atoms as captured in recent experiments using a laser-based collider [Phys. Rev. Research 3, 033209 (2021)]. By exerting control over a parameter space spanned by both collision energy and magnetic field, the width of a Feshbach resonance can be tuned over several orders of magnitude. We apply a quantum defect theory specialized for ultracold atomic collisions to fully describe of the experimental o…
We have observed 26 interspecies Feshbach resonances at fields up to 2050 G in ultracold $^6$Li+$^{23}$Na mixtures for different spin-state combinations. Applying the asymptotic bound-state model to assign the resonances, we have found that most resonances have d-wave character. This analysis serves as guidance for a coupled-channel calculation, which uses modified interaction potentials to describe the positions of the Feshbach resonances well within the experimental uncertainty and to calculate their widths. The scattering length derived from the improved interaction potentials is experiment…
The electronic structure of the (LiYb)$^+$ molecular ion is investigated with two variants of the coupled cluster method restricted to single, double, and noniterative or linear triple excitations. Potential energy curves for the ground and excited states, permanent and transition electric dipole movements, and long-range interaction coefficients $C_4$ and $C_6$ are reported. The data is subsequently employed in scattering calculations and photoassociation studies. Feshbach resonances are shown to be measurable despite the ion's micromotion in the Paul trap. Molecular ions can be formed in the…
We reveal the existence of high-density Feshbach resonances in the collision between the ground and metastable states of $^{171}$Yb and coherently produce the associated Feshbach molecules by photoassociation. The extremely small transition rate is overcome by the enhanced Franck-Condon factor of the weakly bound Feshbach molecule, allowing us to observe Rabi oscillations with long decay time between an atom pair and a molecule in an optical lattice. We also perform the precision measurement of the binding energies, which characterizes the observed resonances. The ultra-narrow photoassociation…
We report the observation of resonance-like loss in the trap population of ultracold dysprosium as a function of magnetic field, which we attribute to anisotropy-induced Fano-Feshbach resonances arising from Dy's large magnetic dipole moment and nonzero electronic orbital angular momentum. We recorded these resonances for four different isotopes, three bosonic and one fermionic, over a field range of 0-6 G and show that the number of resonances changes significantly as a function of temperature, even in the nK regime. Most of the observed resonances are of very narrow width. The fermionic isot…
We optimize a collision-induced cooling process for ultracold atoms in the nondegenerate regime. It makes use of a Feshbach resonance, instead of rf radiation in evaporative cooling, to selectively expel hot atoms from a trap. Using functional minimization we analytically show that for the optimal cooling process the resonance energy must be tuned such that it linearly follows the temperature. Here, optimal cooling is defined as maximizing the phase-space density after a fixed cooling duration. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical Monte-Carlo simulations. In order to simulate more…
We perform Feshbach spectroscopy in an ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{40}$K with different spin-state combinations. We have observed 24 new interspecies Feshbach resonances at magnetic field up to 350 G. A full coupled-channel calculation is performed to assign these resonances. Among them, 12 resonances are identified as d-wave Feshbach resonances. These d-wave Feshbach resonances are about 5 G systematically smaller than the predications based on previous model potential. Taking into account these new experimental results, we improve the Born-Oppenheimer potentials between Na and K, a…
We describe the formation of fermionic NaLi Feshbach molecules from an ultracold mixture of bosonic 23Na and fermionic 6Li. Precise magnetic field sweeps across a narrow Feshbach resonance at 745 G result in a molecule conversion fraction of 5% for our experimental densities and temperatures, corresponding to a molecule number of 5*10^4. The observed molecular decay ifetime is 1.3 ms after removing free Li and Na atoms from the trap.
We propose a method of controlling two-atom interaction using both magnetic and laser fields. We analyse the role of quantum interference between magnetic and optical Feshbach resonances in controlling cold collision. In particular, we demonstrate that this method allows us to suppress inelastic and enhance elastic scattering cross sections. Quantum interference is shown to modify significantly the threshold behaviour and resonant interaction of ultracold atoms. Furthermore, we show that it is possible to manipulate not only the spherically symmetric s-wave interaction but also the anisotropic…
We report the creation of ultracold bosonic $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb Feshbach molecules via magneto-association. By ramping the magnetic field across an interspecies Feshbach resonance, at least 4000 molecules can be produced out of the near degenerate ultracold mixture. Fast loss due to inelastic atom-molecule collisions is observed, which limits the pure molecule number, after residual atoms removal, to 1700. The pure molecule sample can live for 21.8(8) ms in the optical trap, long enough for future molecular spectroscopy studies toward coherently transferring to the singlet ro-vibrational ground…
Collisional resonances are an important tool which has been used to modify interactions in ultracold gases, for realizing novel Hamiltonians in quantum simulations, for creating molecules from atomic gases and for controlling chemical reactions. So far, such resonances have been observed for atom-atom collisions, atom-molecule collisions and collisions between Feshbach molecules which are very weakly bound. Whether such resonances exist for ultracold ground state molecules has been debated due to the possibly high density of states and/or rapid decay of the resonant complex. Here we report a v…
We have studied interspecies scattering in an ultracold mixture of $^{87}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs atoms, both in their lowest-energy spin states. The three-body loss signatures of 30 incoming s- and p-wave magnetic Feshbach resonances over the range 0 to 667 G have been catalogued. Magnetic field modulation spectroscopy was used to observe molecular states bound by up to 2.5 MHz$\times h$. Magnetic moment spectroscopy along the magneto-association pathway from 197 to 182 G gives results consistent with the observed and calculated dependence of the binding energy on magnetic field strength. We have c…
We study ultracold three-body collisions of bosons and fermions when the interatomic interaction is tuned near a narrow Feshbach resonance. We show that the width of the resonance has a substantial impact on the collisional properties of ultracold gases in the strongly interacting regime. We obtain numerical and analytical results that allow us to identify universal features related to the resonance width. For narrow resonances, we have found a suppression of all inelastic processes in boson systems leading to deeply bound states and an enhancement for fermion systems.
Degenerate Fermi gas interacting with molecules near Feshbach resonance is unstable with respect to formation of a mixed state in which atoms and molecules coexist as a coherent superposition. Theory of this state is developed using a mapping to the Dicke model, treating molecular field in the single mode approximation. The results are accurate in the strong coupling regime relevant for current experimental efforts. The exact solution of the Dicke model is exploited to study stability, phase diagram, and nonadiabatic dynamics of molecular field in the mixed state.
We report the observation of a dimer-dimer inelastic collision resonance for ultracold Feshbach molecules made of bosonic sodium and rubidium atoms. This resonance, which we attribute to the crossing of the dimer-dimer threshold with a heteronuclear tetramer state, manifests itself as a pronounced inelastic loss peak of dimers when the interspecies scattering length between the constituent atoms is tuned. Near this resonance, a strong modification of the temperature dependence of the dimer-dimer scattering is observed. Our result provides insight into the heteronuclear four-body system consist…
Helium atoms in the metastable $2^3{S_{1}}$ state (He$^*$) have unique advantages for ultracold atomic experiments. However, there is no known accessible Feshbach resonance in He$^*$, which could be used to manipulate the scattering length and hence unlock several new experimental possiblities. Previous experimental and theoretical studies for He$^*$ have produced contradictory results. We aimed to resolve this discrepancy with a theoretical search for Feshbach resonances, using a new close-coupled model of He$^*$ collisions in the presence of an external magnetic field. Several resonances wer…
We present investigations of the formation rate and collisional stability of lithium Feshbach molecules in an ultracold three-component mixture composed of two resonantly interacting fermionic 6-Li spin states and bosonic 174-Yb. We observe long molecule lifetimes (> 100 ms) even in the presence of a large ytterbium bath and extract reaction rate coefficients of the system. We find good collisional stability of the mixture in the unitary regime, opening new possibilities for studies and probes of strongly interacting quantum gases in contact with a bath species.
We have successfully prepared an optically trapped ultracold mixture of $^{23}$Na and $^{87}$Rb atoms and studied their interspecies Feshbach resonances. Using two different spin combinations, several s-wave and p-wave resonances are identified by observing a high inelastic loss and a temperature rising for both species near resonant magnetic field values. The two s-wave resonances observed below 500 G between atoms in the lowest energy level are possible candidates for Feshbach molecule association. Our results are well characterized by a coupled-channel model and are used refining the ground…
Starting from a multichannel quantum-defect theory, we derive analytic descriptions of a magnetic Feshbach resonance in an arbitrary partial wave $l$, and the atomic interactions around it. An analytic formula, applicable to both broad and narrow resonances of arbitrary $l$, is presented for ultracold atomic scattering around a Feshbach resonance. Other related issues addressed include (a) the parametrization of a magnetic Feshbach resonance of arbitrary $l$, (b) rigorous definitions of "broad" and "narrow" resonances of arbitrary $l$ and their different scattering characteristics, and (c) the…
We show that radiofrequency (RF) radiation may be used to create Feshbach resonances in ultracold gases of alkali-metal atoms at desired magnetic fields that are convenient for atomic cooling and degeneracy. For the case of $^{39}$K+$^{133}$Cs, where there are no RF-free resonances in regions where Cs may be cooled to degeneracy, we show that a resonance may be created near 21~G with 69.2~MHz RF radiation. This resonance is almost lossless with circularly polarized RF, and the molecules created are long-lived even with plane-polarized RF.
We measure higher partial wave Feshbach resonances in an ultracold mixture of fermionic $^6$Li and bosonic $^{133}$Cs by magnetic field dependent atom-loss spectroscopy. For the $p$-wave Feshbach resonances we observe triplet structures corresponding to different projections of the pair rotation angular momentum onto the external magnetic field axis. We attribute the splittings to the spin-spin and spin-rotation couplings by modelling the observation using a full coupled-channel calculation. Comparison with an oversimplified model, estimating the spin-rotation coupling by describing the weakly…
We investigate ultracold collisions in a novel mixture of $^6$Li and $^{53}$Cr fermionic atoms, discovering more than 50 interspecies Feshbach resonances via loss spectroscopy. Building a full coupled-channel model, we unambiguously characterize the $^{6}$Li-$^{53}$Cr scattering properties and yield predictions for other isotopic pairs. In particular, we identify various Feshbach resonances that enable the controlled tuning of elastic $s$- and $p$-wave $^{6}$Li-$^{53}$Cr interactions. Our studies thus make lithium-chromium mixtures emerge as optimally-suited platforms for the experimental sear…
We present a study of interspecies Feshbach resonances in ultracold $^{7}$Li-$^{133}$Cs Bose-Bose mixtures. We locate ten interspecies resonances in three different spin-state combinations. By comparing to coupled-channel calculations, we assign six of the resonances to $s$-wave channels and the rest to $p$-wave channels. We use the $s$-wave resonances to refine the ground-state potentials of LiCs in the coupled-channel calculations and then obtain an accurate characterization of the scattering and bound-state properties of the mixtures. Our results will be useful for future experiments with u…
We observe new Feshbach resonances in ultracold mixtures of $^{85}$Rb and $^{87}$Rb atoms in the $^{85}$Rb$|2, +2\rangle$+$^{87}$Rb$|1, +1\rangle$ and $^{85}$Rb$|2, -2\rangle$+$^{87}$Rb$|1, -1\rangle$ scattering channels. The positions and properties of the resonances are predicted and characterized using the semi-analytic multichannel quantum-defect theory by Gao. Of particular interest, a number of broad entrance-channel dominated p-wave resonances are identified, implicating exciting opportunities for studying a variety of p-wave interaction dominated physics.
We use an atomic fountain clock to measure quantum scattering phase shifts precisely through a series of narrow, low-field Feshbach resonances at average collision energies below $1\,μ$K. Our low spread in collision energy yields phase variations of order $\pm π/2$ for target atoms in several $F,m_F$ states. We compare them to a theoretical model and establish the accuracy of the measurements and the theoretical uncertainties from the fitted potential. We find overall excellent agreement, with small statistically significant differences that remain unexplained.
We observe interspecies Feshbach resonances due to s-wave bound states in ultracold $^{39}$K-$^{133}$Cs scattering for three different spin mixtures. The resonances are observed as joint atom loss and heating of the K sample. We perform least-squares fits to obtain improved K-Cs interaction potentials that reproduce the observed resonances, and carry out coupled-channel calculations to characterize the scattering and bound-state properties for $^{39}$K-Cs, $^{40}$K-Cs and $^{41}$K-Cs. Our results open up the possibilities of tuning interactions in K-Cs atomic mixtures and of producing ultracol…
Here, we report on the observation of a random to chaotic temperature transition in the spacing of Fano-Feshbach resonances in the ultracold polarized gas of thulium atoms. This transition is due to the appearance of so-called d-resonances, which are not accessible at low temperatures, in the spectra at high temperatures, which drastically changes thulium's overall resonance statistic. In addition to this statistical change, it has been observed that s- and d-resonances experience quite different temperature shifts: s-resonances experience almost no shift with the temperature, while d-resonanc…
Ultracold atomic gases have realised numerous paradigms of condensed matter physics where control over interactions has crucially been afforded by tunable Feshbach resonances. So far, the characterisation of these Feshbach resonances has almost exclusively relied on experiments in the threshold regime near zero energy. Here we use a laser-based collider to probe a narrow magnetic Feshbach resonance of rubidium above threshold. By measuring the overall atomic loss from colliding clouds as a function of magnetic field, we track the energy-dependent resonance position. At higher energy, our colli…
We have observed Feshbach resonances for 133Cs atoms in two different hyperfine states at ultra-low static magnetic fields by using an atomic fountain clock. The extreme sensitivity of our setup allows for high signal-to-noise-ratio observations at densities of only 2*10^7 cm^{-3}. We have reproduced these resonances using coupled-channels calculations which are in excellent agreement with our measurements. We justify that these are s-wave resonances involving weakly-bound states of the triplet molecular Hamiltonian, identify the resonant closed channels, and explain the observed multi-peak st…
We report on the creation of ultracold gases of bosonic Feshbach molecules of NaCs. The molecules are associated from overlapping gases of Na and Cs using a Feshbach resonance at 864.12(5) G. We characterize the Feshbach resonance using bound state spectroscopy, in conjunction with a coupled-channel calculation. By varying the temperature and atom numbers of the initial atomic mixtures, we demonstrate the association of NaCs gases over a wide dynamic range of molecule numbers and temperatures, reaching 70 nK for our coldest systems and a phase-space density near 0.1. This is an important stepp…
Recently a new type of Feshbach resonance, i.e., orbital Feshbach resonance (OFR) was proposed for the ultracold alkali-earth (like) atoms, and experimentally observed in the ultracold gases of $^{\rm 173}$Yb atoms. Unlike most of the magnetic Feshbach resonances of ultracold alkali atoms, when the OFR of $^{\rm 173}$Yb atoms appears, the energy gap between the thresholds of the open channel (OC) and the closed channel (CC) is much smaller than the characteristic energy of the inter-atomic interaction, i.e., the van der Waals energy. In this paper we study the OFR in the systems with small CC-…
We have observed 69 $^{41}$K-$^6$Li interspecies Feshbach resonances including 13 elastic p-wave resonances and 6 broad d-wave resonances of $^{41}$K atoms in different spin-state combinations at fields up to 600~G. Multi-channel quantum defect theory calculation is performed to assign these resonances and the results show perfect agreement with experimental values after improving input parameters. The observed broad p- and d- wave resonances display a full resolved multiplet structure. They may serve as important simulators to nonzero partial wave dominated physics.
We report a theoretical study of Feshbach resonances in $^{6}$Li + $^{23}$Na and $^{7}$Li + $^{23}$Na mixtures at ultracold temperatures using new accurate interaction potentials in a full quantum coupled-channel calculation. Feshbach resonances for $l=0$ in the initial collisional open channel $^6$Li$(f=1/2, m_f=1/2) + ^{23}$Na$(f=1, m_f=1)$ are found to agree with previous measurements, leading to precise values of the singlet and triplet scattering lengths for the $^{6,7}$Li$+^{23}$Na pairs. We also predict additional Feshbach resonances within experimentally attainable magnetic fields for …
We discover several magnetic Feshbach resonances in collisions of ultracold K(39) atoms, by studying atom losses and molecule formation. Accurate determination of the magnetic-field resonance locations allows us to optimize a quantum collision model for potassium isotopes. We employ the model to predict the magnetic-field dependence of scattering lengths and of near-threshold molecular levels. Our findings will be useful to plan future experiments on ultracold potassium atoms and molecules.
We present a comprehensive collection of ultracold three-body collisions properties near overlapping Feshbach resonances. Our results incorporate variations of all scattering lengths and demonstrate novel collisional behavior, such as atom-molecule interference effects. Taking advantage of the unique ways in which these collisions reflect Efimov physics, new pathways to control atomic and molecular losses open up. Further, we show that overlapping resonances can greatly improve the chances of observing multiple Efimov features in an ultracold quantum gas for nearly any system.
We show that the probability of the collision-induced absorption of non-resonant microwave photons by a gas of ultracold molecules is dramatically enhanced near a Feshbach scattering resonance. This can be used for detecting Feshbach resonances of ultracold molecules by measuring the microwave field absorption and for tuning the elastic scattering cross sections of ultracold molecules by varying the frequency and intensity of the microwave field in a wide range of the field parameters.
We propose a new type of Feshbach resonance occurring when two different ultracold atoms in their ground state undergo an s-wave collision in the presence of a continuous-wave laser light. The atoms collide in the dissociation continuum of the molecular electronic ground state which is coupled by the light to a rovibrational level of the same electronic ground state: we name this a Laser-Assisted Self-Induced Feshbach Resonance (LASIFR). This mechanism, valid for all polar molecules, is analyzed on the example of ultracold 87Rb and 84Sr atoms, for which the laser frequency falls in the THz ran…
We investigate the possibility of forming Li+Yb ultracold molecules by magnetoassociation in mixtures of ultracold atoms. We find that magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances exist, but are extremely narrow for even-mass ytterbium isotopes, which all have zero spin. For odd-mass Yb isotopes, however, there is a new mechanism due to hyperfine coupling between the electron spin and the Yb nuclear magnetic moment. This mechanism produces Feshbach resonances for fermionic Yb isotopes that can be more than 2 orders of magnitude larger than for the bosonic counterparts.
In collisions at ultralow temperatures, molecules will possess Feshbach resonances, foreign to ultracold atoms, whose virtual excited states consist of rotations of the molecules. We estimate the mean spacing and mean widths of these resonant states, exploiting the fact the molecular collisions at low energy display chaotic motion. As examples, we consider the experimentally relevant molecules O_2, OH, and PbO. The density of s-wave resonant states for these species is quite high, implying that a large number of narrow resonant states will exist.
Most of the current theories on the p-wave superfluid in cold atomic gases are based on the effective-range theory for the two-body scattering, where the low energy p-wave scattering amplitude $f_1(k)$ is given by $% f_1(k)=-1/[ik+1/(\mathcal{V}k^2)+1/\mathcal{R}]$, where $k$ is the incident momentum, and $\mathcal{V}$ and $\mathcal{R}$ are the $k$-independent scattering volume and effective-range, respectively. However, due to the long-range nature of the van der Waals interaction between two colliding ultracold atoms, the p-wave scattering amplitude of the two atoms is not described by the e…
Two-color photoassociation of ground state $^6$Li$^{87}$Rb molecules via the $\mathrm{B}^1Π$ electronic state using short pulses near a magnetic Feshbach resonance is studied theoretically. A near-resonant magnetic field is applied to mix the hyperfine singlet and triplet components of the initial wave function and enhance the photoassociation rate, before the population is transferred to the ground state by a second pulse. We show that an increase of up to three orders of magnitude in the absolute number of molecules produced is attainable for deeply bound vibrational levels. This technique c…
A comprehensive search for "broad" Feshbach resonances (FRs) in all possible combinations of stable alkali-metal atoms is carried out, using a multi-channel quantum-defect theory assisted by the analytic wave functions for a long-range van-der-Waals potential. A number of new "broad" $s$-, $p$- and $d$-wave FRs in the lowest-energy scattering channels, which are stable against two-body dipolar spin-flip loss, are predicted and characterized. Our results also show that "broad" FRs of $p$- or $d$-wave type that are free of two-body loss do not exist between fermionic alkali-metal atoms for magne…
We investigate magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances between ultracold europium atoms and between europium and alkali-metal atoms using multichannel quantum scattering calculations. For ultracold gases of europium atoms both homonuclear $^{153}$Eu+$^{153}$Eu and heteronuclear $^{151}$Eu+$^{153}$Eu systems are studied. Calculations for mixtures of europium and alkali-metal atoms are carried out for prototype systems of $^{153}$Eu+$^{87}$Rb and $^{153}$Eu+$^7$Li. We analyze the prospects for the control of scattering properties, observation of quantum chaotic behavior, and magnetoassociation …
We consider the possibilities for producing ultracold mixtures of K and Cs and forming KCs molecules by magnetoassociation. We carry out coupled-channel calculations of the interspecies scattering length for $^{39}$KCs, $^{41}$KCs and $^{40}$KCs and characterize Feshbach resonances due to s-wave and d-wave bound states, with widths ranging from below 1 nG to 5 G. We also calculate the corresponding bound-state energies as a function of magnetic field. We give a general discussion of the combinations of intraspecies and interspecies scattering lengths needed to form low-temperature atomic mixtu…
Resonances in ultracold collisions involving heavy molecules are difficult to understand, and have proven challenging to detect. Here we report the observation of magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances in ultracold collisions between $^{23}$Na$^{40}$K molecules in the rovibrational ground state and $^{40}$K atoms. We prepare the atoms and molecules in various hyperfine levels of their ground states and observe the loss of molecules as a function of the magnetic field. The atom-molecule Feshbach resonances are identified by observing an enhancement of the loss rate coefficients. We have obser…
The loss of ultracold trapped atoms in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance is treated as a two-stage reaction, using the Breit-Wigner theory. The first stage is the formation of a resonant diatomic molecule, and the second one is its deactivation by inelastic collisions with other atoms. This model is applied to the analysis of recent experiments on $^{87}$Rb, leading to an estimated value of $7\times 10^{-11}$ cm$^{3}/$s for the deactivation rate coefficient.
Inelastic collision rates for ultracold $^{85}$Rb atoms in the F=2 m$_{f}$=-2 state have been measured as a function of magnetic field. Dramatic change in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance at 155 G was observed. Similar to the elastic rate, the inelastic rates show a high peak and a deep trough. Both two- and three-body processes are important, and individual contributions have been determined and compared with theory. This work has made it possible to create an $^{85}$Rb Bose-Einstein condensate with a highly adjustable scattering length.
Controlling physical systems and their dynamics on the level of individual quanta propels both fundamental science and quantum technologies. Trapped atomic and molecular systems, neutral and charged, are at the forefront of quantum science. Their extraordinary level of control is evidenced by numerous applications in quantum information processing and quantum metrology. Studying the long-range interactions between these systems when combined in a hybrid atom-ion trap has lead to landmark results. Reaching the ultracold regime, however, where quantum mechanics dominates the interaction, e.g., g…
We report the observation of interspecies Feshbach resonances in an optically trapped mixture of $^{85}$Rb and $^{133}$Cs. We measure 14 interspecies features in the lowest spin channels for a magnetic field range from 0 to 700 G and show that they are in good agreement with coupled-channel calculations. The interspecies background scattering length is close to zero over a large range of magnetic fields, permitting the sensitive detection of Feshbach resonances through interspecies thermalisation. Our results confirm the quality of the Rb-Cs potential curves and offer promising starting points…
We investigate magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances in ultracold collisions between ground-state Yb and Cs atoms, using coupled-channel calculations based on an interaction potential recently determined from photoassociation spectroscopy. We predict resonance positions and widths for all stable isotopes of Yb, together with resonance decay parameters where appropriate. The resonance patterns are richer and more complicated for fermionic Yb than for spin-zero isotopes, because there are additional level splittings and couplings due to scalar and tensorial Yb hyperfine interactions. We exami…
We show that the photoassociation (PA) rate of ultracold diatomic molecules in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance could be used to probe variations of the electron-to-proton mass ratio $β= m_e/m_p$, a quantity related to other fundamental constants via the $Λ_{\mathrm{QCD}}$ scale. The PA rate exhibits two features near a Feshbach resonance, a minimum and a maximum, which are very sensitive to the details of the interactions and the exact mass of the system. The effect and detection threshold are illustrated in the formation rates of ultracold Li$_2$ and LiNa molecules by performing coupled-…
