We present an analytic model to calculate the atomic scattering length near a Feshbach resonance from data on the molecular binding energy. Our approach considers finite-range square-well potentials and can be applied near broad, narrow, or even overlapping Feshbach resonances. We test our model on Cs$_2$ Feshbach molecules. We measure the binding energy using magnetic-field modulation spectroscopy in a range where one broad and two narrow Feshbach resonances overlap. From the data we accurately determine the Cs atomic scattering length and the positions and widths of two particular resonances.
We present measurements of the binding energies of $^6$Li p-wave Feshbach molecules formed in combinations of the (F = 1/2, m_F = +1/2), (1), and (F = 1/2, m_F = -1/2), (2), states. The binding energies scale linearly with magnetic field detuning for all three resonances. The relative molecular magnetic moments are found to be $113 \pm 7 μ$K/G, $111 \pm 6 μ$K/G and $118 \pm 8 μ$K/G for the (1)-(1), (1)-(2) and (2)-(2) resonances, respectively, in good agreement with theoretical predictions. Closed channel amplitudes and the size of the p-wave molecules are obtained theoretically from full clos…
We present a two-channel model to describe the quantum state of two atoms with finite-range interaction near a Feshbach resonance. This model provides a simple picture to analytically derive the wave function and the binding energy of the molecular bound state. The results agree excellently with the measurements and multichannel calculations. For small binding energies, the system enters a threshold regime in which the Feshbach molecules are identical to long range atom pairs in single channel. According to their threshold behavior, we find Feshbach resonances can be classified into two types.
We consider the binding energy and the wave function of Feshbach molecules confined in a one-dimensional matter waveguide. We compare the binding energy with the experiment of Moritz et al. and find excellent agreement for the full magnetic field range explored experimentally.
We have produced and detected molecules using a p-wave Feshbach resonance between 40K atoms. We have measured the binding energy and lifetime for these molecules and we find that the binding energy scales approximately linearly with magnetic field near the resonance. The lifetime of bound p-wave molecules is measured to be 1.0 +/- 0.1 ms and 2.3 +/- 0.2 ms for the m_l = +/- 1 and m_l = 0 angular momentum projections, respectively. At magnetic fields above the resonance, we detect quasi-bound molecules whose lifetime is set by the tunneling rate through the centrifugal barrier.
We report on the observation of ultracold heteronuclear Feshbach molecules. Starting with a $^{87}$Rb BEC and a cold atomic gas of $^{85}$Rb, we utilize previously unobserved interspecies Feshbach resonances to create up to 25,000 molecules. Even though the $^{85}$Rb gas is non-degenerate we observe a large molecular conversion efficiency due to the presence of a quantum degenerate $^{87}$Rb gas; this represents a key feature of our system. We compare the molecule creation at two different Feshbach resonances with different magnetic-field widths. The two Feshbach resonances are located at $265…
Quantum lattice solitons in a system of two ultracold bosons near Feshbach resonance are investigated. It is shown that their binding energy, effective mass, and spatial width, can be manipulated varying the detuning from the Feshbach resonance. In the case of attractive atomic interactions, the molecule creation stabilizes the solitons. In the case of repulsive interactions, the molecule creation leads to the possibility of existence of bright solitons in some interval of detunings. Due to quantum fluctuations the soliton width is a random quantity. Its standard deviation is larger than the m…
We analyze molecular bound states of atomic quantum gases near a Feshbach resonance. A simple, renormalizable field theoretic model is shown to have exact solutions in the two-body sector, whose binding energy agrees well with observed experimental results in both Bosonic and Fermionic cases. These solutions, which interpolate between BEC and BCS theories, also provide a more general variational ansatz for resonant superfluidity and related problems.
We derive pseudo-potentials that describe the scattering between two particles in two spatial dimensions for any partial wave m, whose scattering strength is parameterized in terms of the m-dependent phase shift. Using our m=0 pseudo-potential, we develop a coupled channel model with 2D zero-range interactions, which describes the two-body physics across a Feshbach resonance. Our model predicts the scattering length, the binding energy and the "closed channel molecular fraction" of two particles; these observables can be measured in experiments on ultracold quasi-2D atomic Bose and Fermi gases…
We report on the creation of heterospecies bosonic molecules, associated from an ultracold Bose-Bose mixture of 41K and 87Rb, by using a resonantly modulated magnetic field close to two Feshbach resonances. We measure the binding energy of the weakly bound molecular states versus the Feshbach field and compare our results to theoretical predictions. We observe the broadening and asymmetry of the association spectrum due to thermal distribution of the atoms, and a frequency shift occurring when the binding energy depends nonlinearly on the Feshbach field. A simple model is developed to quantita…
We suggest that the exchange fluctuations close to a Feshbach resonance in a two-component Fermi gas can result in an effective p-wave attractive interaction. On the BCS side of a Feshbach resonance, the magnitude of this effective interaction is comparable to the s-wave interaction, therefore leading to a possible spin-triplet superfluid in the range of temperatures of actual experiments. We also show that the particle-hole exchange fluctuations introduce an effective scattering length which does not diverge, as the standard mean-field one does. Finally, using the effective interaction quanti…
Magnetically tunable Feshbach resonances were employed to associate cold diatomic molecules in a series of experiments involving both atomic Bose as well as two spin component Fermi gases. This review illustrates theoretical concepts of both the particular nature of the highly excited Feshbach molecules produced and the techniques for their association from unbound atom pairs. Coupled channels theory provides the rigorous formulation of the microscopic physics of Feshbach resonances in cold gases. Concepts of dressed versus bare energy states, universal properties of Feshbach molecules, as wel…
We report on the observation of five Feshbach resonances in collisions between ultracold $^7$Li and $^{87}$Rb atoms in the absolute ground state mixture where both species are in their $|f,m_f>=|1,1>$ hyperfine states. The resonances appear as trap losses for the $^7$Li cloud induced by inelastic heteronuclear three-body collisions. The magnetic field values where they occur are important quantities for an accurate determination of the interspecies interaction potentials. Results of coupled channels calculations based on the observed resonances are presented and refined potential parameters ar…
We analyze the scattering and bound state physics of a pair of atoms in a one-dimensional optical lattice interacting via a narrow Feshbach resonance. The lattice provides a structured continuum allowing for the existence of bound dimer states both below and above the continuum bands, with pairs above the continuum stabilized by either repulsive interactions or their center of mass motion. Inside the band the Feshbach coupling to a closed channel bound state leads to a Fano resonance profile for the transmission, which may be mapped out by RF- or photodissociative spectroscopy. We generalize t…
We explore the rich internal structure of Cs_2 Feshbach molecules. Pure ultracold molecular samples are prepared in a CO_2-laser trap, and a multitude of weakly bound states is populated by elaborate magnetic-field ramping techniques. Our methods use different Feshbach resonances as input ports and various internal level crossings for controlled state transfer. We populate higher partial-wave states of up to eight units of rotational angular momentum (l-wave states). We investigate the molecular structure by measurements of the magnetic moments for various states. Avoided level crossings betwe…
We report on the observation of two Feshbach resonances in collisions between ultracold $^6$Li and $^{87}$Rb atoms in their respective hyperfine ground states $|F,m_F>=|1/2,1/2>$ and $|1,1>$. The resonances show up as trap losses for the $^6$Li cloud induced by inelastic Li-Rb-Rb three-body collisions. The magnetic field values where they occur represent important benchmarks for an accurate determination of the interspecies interaction potentials. A broad Feshbach resonance located at 1066.92 G opens interesting prospects for the creation of ultracold heteronuclear molecules. We furthermore ob…
In this paper, we study the phase diagram of a homogeneous Bose gas with a repulsive interaction near a wide Feshbach resonance at zero temperature. The Bose-Einstein-condensation (BEC) state of atoms is a metastable state. When the scattering length $a$ exceeds a critical value depending on the atom density $n$, $na^3>0.035$, the molecular excitation energy is imaginary and the atomic BEC state is dynamically unstable against molecule formation. The BEC state of diatomic molecules has lower energy, where the atomic excitation is gapped and the molecular excitation is gapless. However when the…
We test a non equilibrium approach to study the behavior of a Bose-Fermi mixture of alkali atoms in the presence of a Feshbach resonance between bosons and fermions. To this end we derive the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) equations of motion for, the interacting system. This approach has proven very successful in the study of resonant systems composed of Bose particles and Fermi particles. However, when applied to a Bose-Fermi mixture, the HFB theory fails to identify even the correct binding energy of molecules in the appropriate limit. Through a more rigorous analysis we are able to ascribe …
A novel atom-molecule conversion technique has been investigated. Ultracold 85Rb atoms sitting in a DC magnetic field near the 155G Feshbach resonance are associated by applying a small sinusoidal oscillation to the magnetic field. There is resonant atom to molecule conversion when the modulation frequency closely matches the molecular binding energy. We observe that the atom to molecule conversion efficiency depends strongly on the frequency, amplitude, and duration of the applied modulation and on the initial phase space density of the sample. This technique offers high conversion efficienci…
We use a Feshbach resonance to tune the scattering length a of a Bose-Einstein condensate of 7Li in the |F = 1, m_F = 1> state. Using the spatial extent of the trapped condensate we extract a over a range spanning 7 decades from small attractive interactions to extremely strong repulsive interactions. The shallow zero-crossing in the wing of the Feshbach resonance enables the determination of a as small as 0.01 Bohr radii. In this regime, evidence of the weak anisotropic magnetic dipole interaction is obtained by comparison with different trap geometries.
We employ radio-frequency spectroscopy on weakly bound $^6$Li$_2$ molecules to precisely determine the molecular binding energies and the energy splittings between molecular states for different magnetic fields. These measurements allow us to extract the interaction parameters of ultracold $^6$Li atoms based on a multi-channel quantum scattering model. We determine the singlet and triplet scattering lengths to be $a_s=45.167(8)a_0$ and $a_t=-2140(18)a_0$ (1 $a_0$ = 0.0529177 nm), and the positions of the broad Feshbach resonances in the energetically lowest three $s-$wave scattering channels t…
We study transport properties of an arbitrary two terminal Hermitian system within a tight-binding approximation and derive the expression for the transparency in the form, which enables one to determine exact energies of perfect (unity) transmittance, zero transmittance (Fano resonance) and bound state in the continuum (BIC). These energies correspond to the real roots of two energy-dependent functions that are obtained from two non-Hermitian Hamiltonians: the Feshbach's effective Hamiltonian and the auxiliary Hamiltonian, which can be easily deduced from the effective one. BICs and scatterin…
We present majority and minority radiofrequency (RF) spectra of strongly interacting imbalanced Fermi gases of Li-6. We observed a smooth evolution in the nature of pairing correlations from pairing in the superfluid region to polaron binding in the highly polarized normal region. The imbalance induces quasiparticles in the superfluid region even at very low temperature. This leads to a local bimodal spectral response, which allows us to determine the superfluid gap Δand the Hartree energy U.
We present a new measurement of the s-wave scattering length a of spin-polarized helium atoms in the 2^3S_1 metastable state. Using two-photon photoassociation spectroscopy and dark resonances we measure the energy E_{v=14}= -91.35 +/- 0.06 MHz of the least bound state v=14 in the interaction potential of the two atoms. We deduce a value of a = 7.512 +/- 0.005 nm, which is at least one hundred times more precise than the best previous determinations and is in disagreement with some of them. This experiment also demonstrates the possibility to create exotic molecules binding two metastable atom…
A numerical investigation of two-laser photoassociation (PA) spectroscopy on spin-polarized metastable helium (He*) atoms is presented within the context of experimental observation of the least-bound energy level in the scattering potential and subsequent determination of the s-wave scattering length. Starting out from the model developed by Bohn and Julienne [Phys. Rev. A \textbf{60}, (1999) 414], PA rate coefficients are obtained as a function of the parameters of the two lasers. The rate coefficients are used to simulate one- and two-laser PA spectra. The results demonstrate the feasibilit…
In the light of recent measurements of the C 1s core level dispersion in graphene [Nat. Phys. 6, 345 (2010)], we explore the interplay between the elastic scattering of photoelectrons and the surface core level shifts with regard to the determination of core level binding energies in Au(111) and Cu3Au(100). We find that an artificial shift is created in the binding energies of the Au 4f core levels, that exhibits a dependence on the emission angle, as well as on the spectral intensity of the core level emission itself. Using a simple model, we are able to reproduce the angular dependence of th…
Few-body systems with large scattering length have universal properties that do not depend on the details of their interactions at short distances. We study the universal bound state properties of the four-boson system with large scattering length in an effective quantum mechanics approach. We compute the four-body binding energies using the Yakubovsky equations for positive and negative scattering length. Moreover, we study the correlation between three- and four-body energies and present a generalized Efimov plot for the four-body system. These results are useful for understanding the cluste…
