We study theoretically the smectic A to C phase transition in isotropic disordered environments. Surprisingly, we find that, as in the clean smectic A to C phase transition, smectic layer fluctuations do not affect the nature of the transition, in spite of the fact that they are much stronger in the presence of the disorder. As a result, we find that the universality class of the transition is that of the "Random field XY model" (RFXY).
A coupled phase-field and hydrodynamic model is introduced to describe a two-phase, weakly compressible smectic (layered phase) in contact with an isotropic fluid of different density. A non-conserved smectic order parameter is coupled to a conserved mass density in order to accommodate non-solenoidal flows near the smectic-isotropic boundary arising from density contrast between the two phases. The model aims to describe morphological transitions in smectic thin films under heat treatment, in which arrays of focal conic defects lead to conical pyramids and concentric rings through curvature d…
Thermodynamics, transition dynamics, and texturing in polymer-dispersed liquid crystals with mesogens exhibiting a direct isotropic/smectic-A transition
Soft modulated phases have been shown to undergo complex morphological transitions, in which layer remodeling induced by mean and Gaussian curvatures plays a major role. This is the case in smectic films under thermal treatment, where focal conics can be reshaped into conical pyramids and concentric ring structures. We build on earlier research on a smectic-isotropic, two phase configuration in which diffusive evolution of the interface was driven by curvature, while mass transport was neglected. Here, we explicitly consider evaporation-condensation processes in a smectic phase with mass trans…
Thermotropic biaxial nematic phases seem to be rare, but biaxial smectic A phases less so. Here we use molecular field theory to study a simple two-parameter model, with one parameter promoting a biaxial phase and the second promoting smecticity. The theory combines the biaxial Maier-Saupe and McMillan models. We use alternatively the Sonnet-Virga-Durand (SVD) and geometric mean approximations (GMA) to characterize molecular biaxiality by a single parameter. For non-zero smecticity and biaxiality, the model always predicts a ground state biaxial smectic A phase. For a low degree of smectic ord…
The dynamics of self-locomotion of active particles in aligned or liquid crystalline fluids strongly deviates from that in simple isotropic media. We explore the long-time dynamics of a swimmer moving in a three-dimensional smectic liquid crystal and find that the mean-square displacement (MSD) transverse to the director exhibits a distinct logarithmic tail at long times. The scaling is distinctly different from that in an isotropic or nematic fluid and hints at the subtle but important role of the director fluctuation spectrum in governing the long-time motility of active particles. Our findi…
Previous theoretical studies of calamitic (i.e., rod-like) ionic liquid crystals (ILCs) based on an effective one-species model led to indications of a novel smectic-A phase with a layer spacing being much larger than the length of the mesogenic (i.e., liquid-crystal forming) ions. In order to rule out the possibility that this wide smectic-A phase is merely an artifact caused by the one-species approximation, we investigate an extension which accounts explicitly for cations and anions in ILCs. Our present findings, obtained by grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, show that the phase trans…
During the past sixty minutes only, oil companies have extracted six trillions liters of oil from the ground, i.e. the volume of about two hundreds Olympic swimming pools. This phenomenal number gives a striking illustration of the impact of multiphase flows on the world economy and environment. From a fundamental perspective, we now clearly understand the large-scale patterns formed when liquid interfaces are driven through heterogeneous environments. In stark contrast, the displacement of fragmented fluids through disordered media remains limited to isolated droplets and bubbles. Here, we el…
Self-diffusion in isotropic and liquid crystalline phases of fd virus colloidal rods: a combined single particle tracking and differential dynamic microscopy study
The molecule 2-decyl-7-phenyl[1]benzothieno[3,2-b][1]benzothiophene has gained a lot of attention, since high charge carrier mobility was observed in thin film transistors. Its thermotropic liquid crystalline states may play an important role in the thin film formation, since the smectic A and the smectic E phase (SmE) are claimed to be pre-stages of the final bulk structure. To understand the phase diversity, structural characterisation of solution processed thin films are performed by X-ray diffraction in the complete temperature range up to the isotropic state at 240°C. The diffraction patt…
We report on strong pretransitional effects across the isotropic liquid-plastic crystal melting temperature in linear and nonlinear dielectric response. Studies were carried out for cyclooctanol (C8H16O) in the unprecedented range of temperatures 120 K < T < 345 K. Such pretransitional effects have not yet been reported in any plastic crystals. Results include the discovery of the experimental manifestation of the Mossotti Catastrophe behavior, so far considered only as a hypothetical paradox. The model interpretations of experimental findings are proposed. We parallel the observed pretransiti…
Weakly attractive interactions between the tips of rod-like colloidal particles affect their liquid-crystal phase behaviour due to a subtle interplay between enthalpy and entropy. Here, we employ molecular dynamics simulations on semi-flexible, repulsive bead-spring chains of which one of the two end beads attract each other. We calculate the phase diagram as a function of both the volume fraction of the chains and the strength of the attractive potential. We identify a large number of phases that include isotropic, nematic, smectic A, smectic B and crystalline states. For tip attraction energ…
We develop the scaled particle theory to describe the thermodynamic properties and orientation ordering of a binary mixture of hard spheres (HS) and hard spherocylinders (HSC) confined in a disordered porous medium. Using this theory the analytical expressions of the free energy, the pressure and the chemical potentials of HS and HSC have been derived. The improvement of obtained results is considered by introducing the Carnahan-Starling-like and Parsons-Lee-like corrections. Phase diagrams for the isotropic-nematic transition are calculated from the bifurcation analysis of the integral equati…
