Isotropic-Nematic Transition and Demixing Behaviour in Binary Mixtures of Hard Spheres and Hard Spherocylinders Confined in a Disordered Porous Medium: Scaled Particle Theory
We develop the scaled particle theory to describe the thermodynamic properties and orientation ordering of a binary mixture of hard spheres (HS) and hard spherocylinders (HSC) confined in a disordered porous medium. Using this theory the analytical expressions of the free energy, the pressure and the chemical potentials of HS and HSC have been derived. The improvement of obtained results is considered by introducing the Carnahan-Starling-like and Parsons-Lee-like corrections. Phase diagrams for the isotropic-nematic transition are calculated from the bifurcation analysis of the integral equation for the orientation singlet distribution function and from the conditions of thermodynamic equilibrium. Both the approaches correctly predict the isotropic-nematic transition at low concentrations of hard spheres. However, the thermodynamic approach provides more accurate results and is able to describe the demixing phenomena in the isotropic and nematic phases. The effects of porous medium on the isotropic-nematic phase transition and demixing behaviour in a binary HS/HSC mixture are discussed.
The isotropic to nematic transition in a system of soft spherocylinders is studied by means of grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations. The probability distribution of the particle density is used to determine the coexistence density of the isotropic and the nematic phases. The distributions are also used to compute the interfacial tension of the isotropic--nematic interface, including an analysis of finite size effects. Our results confirm that the Onsager limit is not recovered until for very large elongation, exceeding at least L/D=40, with L the spherocylinder length and D the diameter. Fo…
We present computer simulations of long thin hard spherocylinders in a narrow planar slit. We observe a transition from the isotropic to a nematic phase with quasi-long-range orientational order upon increasing the density. This phase transition is intrinsically two dimensional and of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type. The effective two-dimensional density at which this transition occurs increases with plate separation. We qualitatively compare some of our results with experiments where microtubules are confined in a thin slit, which gave the original inspiration for this work.
A fluid constituted of hard spherocylinders is studied using a density functional theory for non-spherical hard particles, which can be written as a function of weighted densities. This is based on an extended deconvolution of the Mayer $f$-function for arbitrarily shaped convex hard bodies in tensorial weight functions, which depend each only on the shape and orientation of a single particle. In the course of an examination of the isotropic- nematic interface at coexistence the functional is applied to anisotropic and inhomogeneous problems for the first time. We find good qualitative agreeme…
Using computer simulations we investigate the microscopic structure of the singular director field within a nematic droplet. As a theoretical model for nematic liquid crystals we take hard spherocylinders. To induce an overall topological charge, the particles are either confined to a two-dimensional circular cavity with homeotropic boundary or to the surface of a three-dimensional sphere. Both systems exhibit half-integer topological point defects. The isotropic defect core has a radius of the order of one particle length and is surrounded by free-standing density oscillations. The effective …
The scaled particle theory is developed for the description of thermodynamical properties of a mixture of hard spheres and hard spherocylinders. Analytical expressions for free energy, pressure and chemical potentials are derived. From the minimization of free energy, a nonlinear integral equation for the orientational singlet distribution function is formulated. An isotropic-nematic phase transition in this mixture is investigated from the bifurcation analysis of this equation. It is shown that with an increase of concentration of hard spheres, the total packing fraction of a mixture on phase…
We investigated the nematic to smectic transition undergone by parallel hard spherocylinders in the framework provided by the residual multi-particle entropy (RMPE) formalism. The RMPE is defined as the sum of all contributions to the configurational entropy of the fluid which arise from density correlations involving more than two particles. The vanishing of the RMPE signals the structural changes which take place in the system for increasing pressures. Monte Carlo simulations carried out for parallel hard spherocylinders show that such a one-phase ordering criterion accurately predicts also …
We examine the fluid phase behaviour of the binary mixture of hard superellipses using the scaled particle theory The superellipse is a general two dimensional convex object which can be tuned between circular and rectangular shapes continuously at a given aspect ratio. We find that the shape of the particle affects strongly the stability of isotropic nematic and tetratic phases even if the aspect ratios of both species are fixed. While the isotropic isotropic demixing transition can be ruled out using the scaled particle theory the first order isotropic nematic and the nematic nematic demixin…
We study structure and fluid-phase behaviour of a binary mixture of hard spheres (HSs) and hard spherocylinders (HSCs) in isotropic and nematic states using the $NP_nAT$ ensemble Monte Carlo (MC) method in which a normal pressure tensor component is fixed in a system confined between two hard walls. The method allows one to estimate the location of the isotropic-nematic phase transition and to observe the asymmetry in the composition between the coexisting phases, with the expected increase of the HSC concentration in the nematic phase. This is in stark contrast with the previously reported MC…
The stability of demixing phase transition in binary mixtures of hard plates (with thickness L and diameter D) and hard spheres (with diameter $σ$) is studied by means of Parsons-Lee theory. The isotropic-isotropic demixing, which is found in mixtures of large spheres and small plates, is very likely to be preempted by crystallization. In contrast, the nematic-nematic demixing, which is obtained in mixtures of large plates and small spheres, can be stabilized at low diameter ratios ($σ$/D) and aspect ratios (L/D). At intermediate values of $σ$/D, where the sizes of the components are similar, …
A generalized Van der Waals approach is developed for anisotropic fluids in disordered porous media. As the reference system a hard spherocylinder fluid in a disordered porous medium is considered and described in the framework of the scaled particle theory with the Carnahan-Starling and Parsons-Lee corrections. The attractive part of interaction is treated in the framework of the mean field approximation in which due to orientational dependence of the excluded volume of two spherocylinders, a coupling between attractive and repulsive contributions is found. We focus on spherocylinder fluids w…
We present a study of the isotropic-nematic interface in a system of hard spherocylinders. First we compare results from Monte Carlo simulations and Onsager density functional theory for the interfacial profiles of the orientational order parameter and the density. Those interfacial properties that are not affected by capillary waves are in good agreement, despite the fact that Onsager theory overestimates the coexistence densities. Then we show results of a Monte Carlo study of the capillary waves of the interface. In agreement with recent theoretical investigations (Eur.Phys.J. E {\bf 18} 40…
We consider the effects of polydispersity on isotropic-nematic phase equilibria in thermotropic liquid crystals, using a Maier-Saupe theory with factorized interactions. A sufficient spread (approx. 50%) in the interaction strengths of the particles leads to phase separation into two or more nematic phases, which can in addition coexist with an isotropic phase. The isotropic-nematic coexistence region widens dramatically as polydispersity is increased, leading to re-entrant isotropic-nematic phase separation in some regions of the phase diagram. We show that similar phenomena will occur also f…
We theoretically study the phase behaviour of monolayers of hard rod-plate mixtures using a fundamental-measure density functional in the restricted-orientation (Zwanzig) approximation. We consider both species to be subject to an attractive potential proportional to the particle contact area on the surface and with adsorption strengths that depend on the species type. Particles have board-like shape, with sizes chosen using a symmetry criterion: same volume and same aspect ratio $κ$. Phase diagrams were calculated for $κ=10$, 20 and 40 and different values of adsorption strengths. For small a…
Scaled particle theory for a binary mixture of hard discorectangles and for a binary mixture of hard rectangles is used to predict possible liquid-crystal demixing scenarios in two dimensions. Through a bifurcation analysis from the isotropic phase, it is shown that isotropic-nematic demixing is possible in two-dimensional liquid-crystal mixtures composed of hard convex bodies. This bifurcation analysis is tested against exact calculations of the phase diagrams in the framework of the restricted-orientation two-dimensional model (Zwanzig model). Phase diagrams of a binary mixture of hard disco…
Using Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the electrical conductivity of networks of hard rods as a function of the volume fraction for two tunneling conductance models. For a simple, orientationally independent tunneling model, we observe non-monotonic behaviour of the bulk conductivity as a function of volume fraction at the isotropic-nematic transition. However, this effect is lost if one allows for anisotropic tunneling. We also compute the mesh number of the Kirchhoff network, which turns out to be a simple alternative to the computationally expensive conductivity of large systems in …
A spherocylinder-like molecule with a Lennard-Jones type interaction is proposed as a model of smectic-A (Sm-A) liquid crystals, which can form a free-standing film. By means of Gibbs ensemble simulations, the isotropic, nematic, and Sm-A phases of the model fluid are found to coexist with a vapor phase; and the coexistence conditions of the liquid crystal phases with the vapor phase are determined. For a set of the interaction-parameters of the model molecule, the Sm-A free-standing film is produced below the bulk isotropic--Sm-A phase transition temperature by using Monte Carlo simulations. …
Using a geometry-based fundamental measure density functional theory, we calculate bulk fluid phase diagrams of colloidal mixtures of vanishingly thin hard circular platelets and hard spheres. We find isotropic-nematic phase separation with strong broadening of the biphasic region upon increasing the pressure. In mixtures with large size ratio of platelet and sphere diameter, there is also demixing between two nematic phases with differing platelet concentrations. We formulate a fundamental-measure density functional for mixtures of colloidal platelets and freely overlapping spheres, which rep…
We use numerical simulations to study the flow of a bidisperse mixture of athermal, frictionless, soft-core two dimensional spherocylinders driven by a uniform steady-state simple shear applied at a fixed volume and a fixed finite strain rate $\dotγ$. Energy dissipation is via a viscous drag with respect to a uniformly sheared host fluid, giving a simple model for flow in a non-Brownian suspension with Newtonian rheology. Considering a range of packing fractions $ϕ$ and particle asphericities $α$ at small $\dotγ$, we study the angular rotation $\dotθ_i$ and the nematic orientational ordering $…
We use numerical simulations to study the flow of athermal, frictionless, soft-core two dimensional spherocylinders driven by a uniform steady-state simple shear applied at a fixed volume and a fixed finite strain rate $\dotγ$. Energy dissipation is via a viscous drag with respect to a uniformly sheared host fluid, giving a simple model for flow in a non-Brownian suspension with Newtonian rheology. We study the resulting spatial structure of the sheared system, and compute correlation functions of the velocity, the particle density, the nematic order parameter, and the particle angular velocit…
The scaled particle theory (SPT) approximation is applied for the study of the influence of a porous medium on the isotropic-nematic transition in a hard spherocylinder fluid. Two new approaches are developed in order to improve the description in the case of small lengths of spherocylinders. In one of them, the so-called SPT-CS-PL approach, the Carnahan-Starling (CS) correction is introduced to improve the description of thermodynamic properties of the fluid, while the Parsons-Lee (PL) correction is introduced to improve the orientational ordering. The second approach, the so-called SPT-PL ap…
We investigate isotropic-isotropic, isotropic-nematic and nematic-nematic phase coexistence in binary mixtures of circular platelets with vanishing thickness, continuous rotational degrees of freedom and radial size ratios $λ$ up to 5. A fundamental measure density functional theory, previously used for the one-component model, is proposed and results are compared against those from Onsager theory as a benchmark. For $λ\leq 1.7$ the system displays isotropic-nematic phase coexistence with a widening of the biphasic region for increasing values of $λ$. For size ratios $λ\geq 2$, we find demixin…
The pe physics engine is validated through the simulation of a liquid crystal model system consisting of hard spherocylinders. For this purpose we evaluate several characteristic parameters of this system, namely the nematic order parameter, the pressure, and the Frank elastic constants. We compare these to the values reported in literature and find a very good agreement, which demonstrates that the pe physics engine can accurately treat such densely packed particle systems. Simultaneously we are able to examine the influence of finite size effects, especially on the evaluation of the Frank el…
We investigate the isotropic-to-nematic phase transition in systems of hard helical particles, using Onsager theory and Monte Carlo computer simulations. Motivation of this work resides in the ubiquity of the helical shape motif in many natural and synthetic polymers, as well as in the well known importance that the details of size and shape have in determining the phase behaviour and properties of (soft) condensed matter systems. We discuss the differences with the corresponding spherocylinder phase diagram and find that the helix parameters affect the phase behaviour and the existence of the…
We study the organization of topological defects in a system of nematogens confined to the two-dimensional sphere (S^2). We first perform Monte Carlo simulations of a fluid system of hard rods (spherocylinders) living in the tangent plane of S^2. The sphere is adiabatically compressed until we reach a jammed nematic state with maximum packing density. The nematic state exhibits four +1/2 disclinations arrayed on a great circle rather than at the vertices of a regular tetrahedron. This arises from the high elastic anisotropy of the system in which splay (K_1) is far softer than bending (K_3). W…
Using scaled-particle theory for binary mixtures of two-dimensional hard particles with rotational freedom, we analyse the stability of nematic phases and the demixing phase behaviour of a variety of mixtures, focussing on cases where at least one of the components consists of hard rectangles or hard squares. A pure fluid of hard rectangles may exhibit, aside from the usual uniaxial nematic phase, an additional (tetratic) oriented phase, possessing two directors, which is the analogue of the biaxial or cubatic phases in three- dimensional fluids. There is computer simulation evidence that the …
Using overdamped Brownian dynamics simulations we investigate the isotropic-nematic (IN) transition of self-propelled rods in three spatial dimensions. For two well-known model systems (Gay-Berne potential and hard spherocylinders) we find that turning on activity moves to higher densities the phase boundary separating an isotropic phase from a (nonpolar) nematic phase. This active IN phase boundary is distinct from the boundary between isotropic and polar-cluster states previously reported in two-dimensional simulation studies and, unlike the latter, is not sensitive to the system size. We th…
The generalized van der Waals equation of state for anisotropic liquids in porous media consists of two terms. One of them is based on the equation of state for hard spherocylinders in random porous media obtained from the scaled particle theory. The second term is expressed in terms of the mean value of attractive intermolecular interactions. The obtained equation is used for the investigation of the gas-liquid-nematic phase behavior of a molecular system depending on the anisotropy of molecule shapes, anisotropy of attractive intermolecular interactions, and porosity of a porous medium. It is sh…
We present theory and simulation of simultaneous chemical demixing and phase ordering in a polymer-liquid crystal mixture in conditions where isotropic- isotropic phase separation is metastable with respect to isotropic-nematic phase transition. It is found that mesophase formation proceeds by a transient metastable phase that surround the ordered phase, and whose lifetime is a function of the ratio of diffusional to orientational mobilities. It is shown that kinetic phase ordering in polymer-mesogen mixtures is analogous to kinetic crystallization in polymer solutions.
We study experimentally the nonequilibrium phase behaviour of a horizontal monolayer of macroscopic rods. The motion of the rods in two dimensions is driven by vibrations in the vertical direction. Aside from the control variables of packing fraction and aspect ratio that are typically explored in molecular liquid crystalline systems, due to the macroscopic size of the particles we are also able to investigate the effect of the precise shape of the particle on the steady states of this driven system. We find that the shape plays an important role in determining the nature of the orientational …
We present a study of a water-in-oil microemulsion in which surfactant coated water nanodroplets are dispersed in the isotropic phase of the thermotropic liquid crystal 5CB. As the temperature is lowered below the isotropic to nematic phase transition of pure 5CB, the system displays a demixing transition leading to a coexistence of a droplet rich isotropic phase with a droplet poor nematic. The transition is anticipated, in the high T side, by increasing pretransitional fluctuations in 5CB molecular orientation and in the nanodroplet concentration. The observed phase behavior supports the not…
Phase behavior of liquid crystals is of long-standing interest due to numerous applications, with one of the key issues being how the presence of impurities affects the liquid crystalline order. Here we study the orientational order of 4-cyano-4$^{'}$-pentylbiphenyl (5CB) and 4-cyano-4$^{'}$-hexylbiphenyl (6CB) nematic liquid crystals in the presence of varying concentrations of water and n-hexane molecules serving as impurities, by carrying out both fully atomistic simulations and experiments. Our results reveal that mixing of the impurities (in case of hexane) with the host liquid crystals c…
We investigate the kinetics of phase separation for a mixture of rodlike viruses (fd) and polymer (dextran), which effectively constitutes a system of attractive rods. This dispersion is quenched from a flow-induced fully nematic state into the region where the nematic and the isotropic phase coexist. We show experimental evidence that the kinetic pathway depends on the overall concentration. When the quench is made at high concentrations, the system is meta-stable and we observe typical nucleation-and-growth. For quenches at low concentration the system is unstable and the system undergoes a …
Using fundamental measure density functional theory we investigate paranematic-nematic and nematic-nematic phase coexistence in binary mixtures of circular platelets with vanishing thicknesses. An external magnetic field induces uniaxial alignment and acts on the platelets with a strength that is taken to scale with the platelet area. At particle diameter ratio lambda=1.5 the system displays paranematic-nematic coexistence. For lambda=2, demixing into two nematic states with different compositions also occurs, between an upper critical point and a paranematic-nematic-nematic triple point. Incr…
A theoretical model of shape-anisometric particles embedded in a cubic lattice is formulated for binary mixtures combining rod-like, plate-like and spherical particles. The model aims at providing a tool for the prediction and interpretation of complex phase behavior in a variety of liquid crystalline colloids, biological and macromolecular systems. Introducing just repulsive interactions among the particles, a rich variety of phase structures and multiphasic equilibria is obtained, including isotropic, nematic, lamellar and columnar phases, demixing into phases of the same or different symmet…
Using grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations, we investigate the isotropic-nematic phase transition for hard rods of size Lx1x1 on a 3D cubic lattice. We observe such a transition for L >= 6. For L = 6, the nematic state has a negative order parameter, reflecting the co--occurrence of two dominating orientations. For L >= 7, the nematic state has a positive order parameter, corresponding to the dominance of one orientation. We investigate rod lengths up to L = 25 and find evidence for a very weakly first-order isotropic-nematic transition, while we cannot completely rule out a second o…
We formulate the scaled particle theory for a general mixture of hard isosceles triangles and calculate different phase diagrams for the one-component fluid and for certain binary mixtures. The fluid of hard triangles exhibits a complex phase behavior: (i) the presence of a triatic phase with sixfold symmetry, (ii) the isotropic-uniaxial nematic transition is of first order for certain ranges of aspect ratios, and (iii) the one-component system exhibits nematic-nematic transitions ending in critical points. We found the triatic phase to be stable not only for equilateral triangles but also for…
Using grand-canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the phase diagram of hard rods of length $L$ with additional contact (sticky) attractions on square and cubic lattices. The phase diagram shows a competition between gas-liquid and ordering transitions (which are of demixing type on the square lattice for $L \ge 7$ and of nematic type on the cubic lattice for $L \ge 5$). On the square lattice, increasing attractions initially lead to a stabilization of the isotropic phase. On the cubic lattice, the nematic transition remains of weak first order upon increasing the attractions. In th…
We present theory and simulation of simultaneous chemical demixing and phase ordering in a polymer-liquid crystal mixture in conditions where isotropic-isotropic phase separation is metastable with respect to isotropic-nematic phase transition. In the case the mechanism is nucleation and growth, it is found that mesophase growth proceeds by a transient metastable phase that surround the ordered phase, and whose lifetime is a function of the ratio of diffusional to orientational mobilities. In the case of spinodal decomposition, different dynamic regimes are observed depending on the mobility r…
Within a second virial theory, we study bulk phase diagrams as well as the free planar isotropic-nematic interface of binary mixtures of nonadditive thin and thick hard rods. For species of the same type the excluded volume is determined only by the dimensions of the particles, whereas for dissimilar ones it is taken to be larger or smaller than that, giving rise to a nonadditivity that can be positive or negative. We argue that such a nonadditivity can result from modelling of soft interactions as effective hard-core interactions. The nonadditivity enhances or reduces the fractionation at iso…
The generalized van der Waals equation for anisotropic fluids in porous media, proposed by the authors in previous works, is used to describe the effect of porous media on the phase behavior of polypeptide solutions. By introducing the temperature dependence for the depth of the potential well and the geometric parameters of the spherocylinder, the main features of phase behavior of the polypeptide poly ($γ$-benzyl-$L$-glutamate) (PBLG) in a solution of dimethylformamide, including the existence of two nematic phases, is reproduced. It is shown that the presence of a porous medium shifts the p…
We discuss theoretically, using density-functional theory, the phase stability of nematic and smectic ordering in a suspension of platelets of the same thickness but with a high polydispersity in diameter, and study the influence of polydispersity on this stability. The platelets are assumed to interact like hard objects, but additional soft attractive and repulsive interactions, meant to represent the effect of depletion interactions are also considered. The aspect (diameter to thickness) ratio is taken to be very high, in order to model solutions of mineral platelets recently explored experi…
The phase diagram of a polydisperse mixture of uniaxial rod-like and plate-like hard parallelepipeds is determined for aspect ratios $κ=5$ and 15. All particles have equal volume and polydispersity is introduced in a highly symmetric way. The corresponding binary mixture is known to have a biaxial phase for $κ=15$, but to be unstable against demixing into two uniaxial nematics for $κ=5$. We find that the phase diagram for $κ=15$ is qualitatively similar to that of the binary mixture, regardless the amount of polydispersity, while for $κ=5$ a sufficient amount of polydispersity stabilizes the b…
The surface phase behavior of binary mixtures of colloidal hard rods in contact with a solid substrate (hard wall) is studied, with special emphasis on the region of the phase diagram that includes the smectic A phase. The colloidal rods are modelled as hard cylinders of the same diameter and different lengths, in the approximation of perfect alignment. A fundamental--measure density functional is used to obtain equilibrium density profiles and thermodynamic properties such as surface tensions and adsorption coefficients. The bulk phase diagram exhibits nematic-smectic and smectic-smectic demi…
Many lyotropic liquid crystals are composed of mesogens that display a considerable spread in size or shape affecting their material properties and thermodynamics via various demixing and multi-phase coexistence scenarios. Starting from a generalized Onsager theory we formulate a generic framework that enables locating spinodal polydispersities as well as identifying the nature of incipient size fractionation for arbitrary model potentials and size distributions. We apply our theory to nematic phases of both hard rods and disks whose main particle dimension is described by a unimodal log-norma…
We present the phase diagram of a system of mesogenic top-shaped molecules based on the Parsons- Lee density functional theory and Monte Carlo simulation. The molecules are modeled as a hard spherocylinder with a hard sphere embedded in its center. The stability of five different phases is studied, namely, isotropic, nematic, smectic A, smectic C, and columnar phases. The positionally ordered phases are investigated only for the case of parallel alignment. It is found that the central spherical unit destabilizes the nematic with respect to the isotropic phase, while increasing the length of th…
In equilibrium hard-rod fluids, and in effective hard-rod descriptions of anisotropic soft-particle systems, the transition from the isotropic (I) phase to the nematic phase (N) is observed above the rod aspect ratio L/D = 3.70 as predicted by Onsager. We examine the fate of this criterion in a molecular dynamics study of a system of soft repulsive spherocylinders rendered active by coupling half the particles to a heat bath at a higher temperature than that imposed on the other half. We show that the system phase separates and self-organizes into various liquid-crystalline phases that are not…
We apply a recently proposed density functional for mixtures of parallel hard cylinders, based on Rosenfeld's fundamental measure theory, to study the effect of length-polydispersity on the relative stability between the smectic and columnar liquid crystal phases. To this purpose we derive from this functional an expression for the direct correlation function and use it to perform a bifurcation analysis. We compare the results with those obtained with a second and a third virial approximation of this function. All three approximations lead to the same conclusion: there is a terminal polydispers…
Using isobaric Monte Carlo simulations, we map out the entire phase diagram of a system of hard cylindrical particles of length $L$ and diameter $D$, using an improved algorithm to identify the overlap condition between two cylinders. Both the prolate $L/D>1$ and the oblate $L/D<1$ phase diagrams are reported with no solution of continuity. In the prolate $L/D>1$ case, we find intermediate nematic \textrm{N} and smectic \textrm{SmA} phases in addition to a low density isotropic \textrm{I} and a high density crystal \textrm{X} phase, with \textrm{I-N-SmA} and \textrm{I-SmA-X} triple points. An …
Spinodal demixing of systems into two phases having very different viscosities leads to viscoelastic networks, i.e. gels. Here we consider demixing in a colloidal system where one phase is a nematic liquid crystal with a strongly anisotropic viscosity. We combine real space analysis of a sepiolite clay system with molecular dynamics computer simulation. We find a long-lived network with many of the characteristics of a colloidal gel. Remarkably the anisotropic viscosity means that flow is possible within the nematic network, but only along the network, which thus preserves its structure, leadi…
Theory and simulations of simultaneous chemical demixing and phase ordering are performed for a mixed order parameter system with an isotropic-isotropic (I-I) phase separation that is metastable with respect to an isotropic-nematic (I-N) phase ordering transition. Under certain conditions, the disordered phase transforms into an ordered phase via the motion of a double front containing a metastable phase produced by I-I demixing, a thermodynamically driven mechanism not previously reported. Different kinetic regimes are found depending on the location of the initial conditions in the thermodyn…
We analyse a binary mixture of colloidal parallel hard cylindrical particles with identical diameters but dissimilar lengths $L_1$ and $L_2$, with $s=L_2/L_1=3$, confined by two parallel hard walls in a planar slit-pore geometry, using a fundamental--measure density functional theory. This model presents nematic (N) and two types of smectic (S) phases, with first- and second-order N-S bulk transitions and S-S demixing, and surface behaviour at a single hard wall which includes complete wetting by the S phase mediated (or not) by an infinite number of surface-induced layering (SIL) transitions.…
We propose a density functional for anisotropic fluids of hard body particles. It interpolates between the well-established geometrically based Rosenfeld functional for hard spheres and the Onsager functional for elongated rods. We test the new approach by calculating the location of the the nematic-isotropic transition in systems of hard spherocylinders and hard ellipsoids. The results are compared with existing simulation data. Our functional predicts the location of the transition much more accurately than the Onsager functional, and almost as good as the theory by Parsons and Lee. We argue…
