Since nine years experiments have been observing a host of exotic states decaying into heavy quarkonia. The interpretation of most of them still remains uncertain and, in some cases, controversial, notwithstanding a considerable progress has been made on the quality of the experimental information available and a number of ideas and models have been put forward to explain the observations. In this mini-review we will summarize the measurements, with the most recent updates, and list the useful ones yet to be done. We will discuss the problem of the spin of the X, which could hide some major surprise on its interpretation, and review some more phenomenological issues debated in the field.
This talk summarizes recent developments in quarkonium spectroscopy. I comment on the relation between the Z_b(10610) and Z_b(10650) and recently observed Z_c(3900) and Z_c(4025) states. Then I discuss a number of calculations using non-relativistic effective field theory for the X(3872), Z_b(10610), and Z_b(10650), under the assumption that these are shallow molecular bound states of charm or bottom mesons.
We extend previous calculations of leading-order correlation functions of spin-0 and spin-1 light quarkonium hybrids to include QCD condensates of dimensions five and six, with a view to improving the stability of QCD sum-rules analyses in previously unstable channels. Based on these calculations, prior analyses in the literature, and its phenomenological importance, we identify the exotic $J^{PC}=0^{+-}$ channel as the most promising for detailed study. Using Gaussian sum-rules constrained by the Hölder inequality, we calculate masses of light (nonstrange and strange) quarkonium hybrid mesons…
The exclusive processes are considered, where a point-like source of heavy quark-antiquark pairs $Q \bar Q$, e.g. their electromagnetic current, produces a pair consisting of a heavy quarkoniumlike exotic meson (tetraquark) or baryon (pentaquark) and a light meson or an antibaryon. For a sufficiently large mass of the heavy quark $m_Q$ there is a range of the energy $E$ above the $Q \bar Q$ threshold, where $E \ll m_Q$ and still the energy is large compared to the strong interaction scale, $E \gg Λ_{QCD}$. It is shown that in this energy range, where the heavy quarks are nonrelelativistic, a s…

The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB energy-asymmetric $e^+e^-$ collider is a substantial upgrade of the B factory facility at KEK in Tsukuba, Japan. It aims to record a factor of 50 times more data than its predecessor. The experiment completed a commissioning run in 2018, and began full operation in early 2019. Belle II is uniquely capable of studying the so-called XYZ particles: heavy exotic hadrons consisting of more than three quarks. First discovered by Belle, these now number in the dozens, and represent the emergence of a new category within quantum chromodynamics. This talk will p…
The mass splitting between the quarkonium spin-singlet state $h$ ($J^{PC} = 1^{+-}$) and the spin average of the quarkonium spin-triplet states $χ$ ($J^{PC} = 0^{++}, 1^{++}, 2^{++}$) is seen to be astonishingly small, not only in the charmonium and bottomonium cases where the relevant masses have been measured, but in positronium as well. We find, both in nonrelativistic quark models and in NRQCD, that this hyperfine splitting is so small that it can be used as a test of the pure $Q\bar Q$ content of the states. We discuss the $2P$ states of charmonium in the vicinity of $3.9$ GeV, where the …
The research presented here uses QCD sum rules (QSR) to study exotic hadrons. There are several themes in this work. First is the use of QSR to predict the masses of exotic hadrons that may exist among the heavy quarkonium-like states. The second theme is the application of sophisticated loop integration methods in order to obtain more complete theoretical results. These in turn can be extended to higher orders in the perturbative expansion in order to predict the properties of exotic hadrons more accurately. The third theme involves developing a renormalization methodology for these higher or…
We review selected lattice results on the charmonium spectrum and first attempts to search for the existence of exotic states. The hadro-quarkonium model was proposed to interpret some of the exotic states as a quarkonium core inside a hadron. We present a lattice study of the hadro-quarkonium model in the limit of static quarks. The charm quark decouples in low energy observables and binding energies of charmonium. In a model calculation we are able to evaluate the corrections to decoupling of the charm quark in the continuum.
The discovery of hadronic states beyond the conventional two-quark meson and three-quark baryon picture in the last two decades is one of the most amazing accomplishments in fundamental physics research. Many experiments contributed to this field despite of the original goals of the design. We review the experimental progress on the study of the quarkoniumlike states -- states with at least one heavy quark-antiquark pair and possible light quarks, also known as XYZ states. We give a general review and then focus on the new experimental results on the X(3872) and its bottom-quark partner X_b, t…
In two recent papers, we used the hadro-quarkonium model to study the properties of hidden-charm and bottom tetraquarks and pentaquarks. Here, we extend the previous results and calculate the masses of heavy-quarkonium-kaon/hyperon systems. We also compute the spectrum of hidden-charm and bottom tetraquarks with strangeness in the compact tetraquark (diquark-antidiquark) model. If heavy-light exotic systems with non-null strangeness content were to be observed experimentally, it might be possible to distinguish among the large variety of available theoretical pictures for tetra- and pentaquark…
In this Snowmass White Paper, we discuss physics opportunities involving heavy quarkonia at the intensity and energy frontiers of high energy physics. We focus primarily on two specific aspects of quarkonium physics for which significant advances can be expected from experiments at both frontiers. The first aspect is the spectroscopy of charmonium and bottomonium states above the open-heavy-flavor thresholds. Experiments at e^+ e^- colliders and at hadron colliders have discovered many new, unexpected quarkonium states in the last 10 years. Many of these states are surprisingly narrow, and som…
Quarkonium has been proposed as a sensitive probe of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) more than thirty years ago. Since then, lots of experimental efforts have been devoted to study its production in heavy-ion collisions to search for QGP and study its properties and significant progresses have been made. In this paper, an overview of recent experimental results on charmonium and bottomonium production in heavy-ion collisions as well as in small systems are presented. Furthermore, the results on exotic particle X(3872) production in Pb+Pb and p+p collisions are also discussed.
To validate the molecular description of the observed $Z_b(10610)/Z_b(10650)$ and $Z_c(3900)/Z_c(4025)$, it is valuable to investigate their counterparts, denoted as $Z_{QV}^{(\prime)}$ in this work, and the corresponding decay modes. In this work, we present an analysis of the $Z_{QV}^{(\prime)}$ using flavor symmetry. We also use the effective Lagrangian based on the heavy quark symmetry to explore the rescattering mechanism and calculate the partial widths for the isospin conserved channels $Z_{QV}^{(\prime)} \to η_Q V$. The predicted partial widths are of an order of MeV for $Z_{QV} \to η_…
The possible importance of threshold effects in heavy quarkonium spectroscopy is discussed. The starting point is the calculation of the spectrum of heavy quarkonium-like states with self-energy/threshold corrections. Two different approaches are compared: I) The Unquenched Quark Model (UQM); II) A novel coupled-channel model, based on the UQM formalism. The latter provides a possible solution to the long-standing problem of convergence in UQM calculations; it also makes it possible to distinguish between states which are almost pure quarkonia and exotic states, characterized by non-negligible…
Some of the currently most popular conjectures for the structure of the recently discovered heavy mesons that do not find a place in the quark model quarkonium spectrum are sketched. Furthermore, some observables are identified that should allow one to identify the most prominent components of individual states.
We have extended the calculation of the correlation functions of heavy quarkonium hybrid operators with various $J^{PC}$ quantum numbers to include QCD condensates up to dimension six. In contrast to previous analyses which were unable to optimize the QCD sum-rules for certain $J^{PC}$, recent work has shown that inclusion of dimension six condensates stabilizes the hybrid sum-rules and permits reliable mass predictions. In this work we have investigated the effects of the dimension six condensates on the remaining channels. After performing the QCD sum-rule analysis, we update the mass spectr…
Hadron spectroscopy represented in the past a major tool for understanding the fundamental symmetries of strong forces. More recently, the interest on this topic has been revitalized by the discovery of new quarkonium-like resonances, that do not fit in the standard picture and whose understanding could improve our mastery of quantum chromodynamics. I review here the experimental signatures of these exotic hadrons, at present and future e+e- and hadron collider experiments.
We investigate in detail the role of heavy meson loops in the transition from $J^{PC}=1^{--}$ sources to candidates for QCD "exotics", such as $Z_c(3900)$, $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b'(10650)$. We demonstrate that, if a vector state strongly couples to a heavy meson pair in an $S$--wave and this system decays to another heavy meson pair (e.g. via pion emission), again in an $S$-wave, the pertinent diagrams get enhanced significantly, if the intermediate states are (near) on--shell and have small relative momenta. In a limited kinematic range this mechanism generates "singularity regions" that lead t…
The recent observation and measurement of the decay $Z_c(3900) \to ρη_c$ provides the data on the relative strength of the pion and $ρ$ coupling in the corresponding transitions between exotic resonances and pure heavy quarkonium. It is argued that using these data, the heavy quark limit for the $c$ and $b$ quarks, the heavy quark spin symmetry (HQSS) and the vector dominance for photon emission by the light quarks, one can (approximately) quantitatively estimate the rates of the radiative transitions from $Υ(5S)$ to the expected $G$-odd states of molecular bottomonium $W_{bJ}$. The estimate o…
I review here the most recent results about the observation and the study of hadronic bound states that do not fit well in the standard quarkonium picture. Several new states have been observed in the last few years, at B-, tau-Factories and hadron colliders. For most of them, quantum number determinations are available and allow to develop the basis of a new spectroscopy based on exotic compounds like tetraquarks or meson molecules. Nonetheless, there is still a lot of work to do to complete the picture.
We explore conventional meson-hybrid mixing in $J^{PC}=1^{++}$ heavy quarkonium using QCD Laplace sum-rules. We calculate the cross-correlator between a heavy conventional meson current and heavy hybrid current within the operator product expansion, including terms proportional to the four- and six-dimensional gluon condensates and the six-dimensional quark condensate. Using experimentally determined hadron masses, we construct models of the $1^{++}$ charmonium and bottomonium mass spectra. These models are used to investigate which resonances couple to both currents and thus exhibit conventio…
We study prompt hadroproduction of the charged bottomonium-like states $Z_b^\pm (10610)$ and $Z_b^\pm (10650)$, and the charged charmonium-like states $Z_c^\pm (3900)$ and $Z_c^\pm (4020)$, at the Tevatron and the LHC, provided that these states are $S$-wave hadronic molecules. Using two Monte Carlo event generators, Herwig and Pythia, to simulate the production of heavy meson pairs, we derive an order-of-magnitude estimate of the production rates for these four particles. Our estimates yield a cross section at the nb level for the $Z_b(10610)$ and $Z_b(10650)$. The results for the $Z_c(3900)$…
We review the most recent experimental progress in the hadron spectroscopy, up to bottomonium mass. This covers the search for the J^PC=1^-+ exotic state, the states in J/psi decays, the spin-singlets of heavy quarkonium, and the charmoniumlike XYZ states.

We summarize recent developments in heavy quarkonium spectroscopy, relying on previous review articles for the bulk of material available prior to mid-2010. This note is intended as a mini-review to appear in the 2012 Review of Particle Physics published by the Particle Data Group.

Two topics are briefly reviewed in this talk: the decay of flavored hadrons or quarkonium states involving a baryon--antibaryon pair, and the spectroscopy of heavy baryons containing one, two or three heavy quarks. Some prospects for exotic heavy baryons are also discussed.
We have studied phenomenological implications of several family non-universal U(1)$^\prime$ sub-models in the U(1)$^\prime$-extended Minimal Supersysmmetric Standard Model (UMSSM) possesing an extra down quark type exotic field. In doing this, we have started by enforcing anomaly cancellation criteria to generate a number of solutions in which the extra U(1)$^\prime$ charges of the particles are treated as free parameters. We have then imposed existing bounds coming from colliders and astrophysical observations on the assumed sub-models and observed that current limits dictate certain charge o…
Exotic quarkonia are candidates to new types of hadrons including four quarks or gluonic degrees of freedom as constituents, the latter being a unique feature of QCD. We review recent developments in nonrelativistic EFTs to describe exotic quarkonia and in particular recent results on the spectrum of heavy hybrids including spin-dependent contributions up to $1/m_Q^2$-terms in the heavy-quark-mass expansion. We determine the nonperturbative contributions to the matching coefficients of the EFT by fitting our results to lattice-QCD determinations of the charmonium hybrid spectrum and extrapolat…
We have combined perturbative unitarity and renormalisation group equation arguments in order to find a dynamical way to constrain the space of the gauge couplings ($g'_1$, $\widetilde{g}$) of the so-called "Minimal $Z'$ Models". We have analysed the role of the gauge couplings evolution in the perturbative stability of the two-to-two body scattering amplitudes of the vector and scalar sectors of these models and we have shown that perturbative unitarity imposes an upper bound that is generally stronger than the triviality constraint. We have also demonstrated how this method quantitatively re…
The quark model was formulated in 1964 to classify mesons as bound states made of a quark-antiquark pair, and baryons as bound states made of three quarks. For a long time all known mesons and baryons could be classified within this scheme. Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), however, in principle also allows the existence of more complex structures, generically called exotic hadrons or simply exotics. These include four-quark hadrons (tetraquarks and hadronic molecules), five-quark hadrons (pentaquarks) and states with active gluonic degrees of freedom (hybrids), and even states of pure glue (glueb…
We discuss the production of $D$-mesons and $J/ψ$ in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions within the Color-Glass-Condensate (CGC) framework. We demonstrate that the modification of the LHC data on $D$ and $J/ψ$ yields in high multiplicity events relative to minimum bias events arise from a significant enhancement of the gluon saturation scales of the corresponding rare parton configurations in the colliding protons and nuclei. For a given event multiplicity, we predict these relative yields to be energy independent from $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV at RHIC to the highest LHC ene…
These are the mini-proceedings of the CHARMEX workshop. The meeting focused on recent developments in charm spectroscopy, especially on the possible role of the states that do not fit into the quark model classification, the so-called exotic states. The goal of this write-up is to provide the community with a short summary of the individual talks as well as a comprehensive, up-to-date list of relevant references.
Heavy quarks have been instrumental for progress in our exploration of strong interactions. Quarkonium in particular, a heavy quark-antiquark nonrelativistic bound state, has been at the root of several revolutions. Quarkonium is endowed with a pattern of separated energy scales qualifying it as special probe of complex environments. Its multiscale nature has made a description in Quantum Field Theory particularly difficult up to the advent of Nonrelativistic Effective Field Theories. We will focus on systems made by two or more heavy quarks. After considering some historical approaches based …
Recent discoveries by Belle and BESIII of charged exotic quarkonium-like resonances provide fresh impetus for study of heavy exotic hadrons. In the limit N_c --> infinity, M_Q --> infinity, the (Qbar Q qbar q') tetraquarks (TQ-s) are expected to be narrow and slightly below or above the (Qbar q') and (Q qbar) two-meson threshold. The isoscalar TQ-s manifest themselves by decay to (Qbar Q) pi pi, and the ~30 MeV heavier charged isotriplet TQ-s by decays into (Qbar Q) pi. The new data strongly suggest that the real world with N_c=3, Q=c,b and q,q' = u,d is qualitatively described by the above li…
Flavor violating processes in the quark and lepton sectors are investigated within a realistic supersymmetric $SO(10)\times A_4$ grand unification model. By employing exotic heavy fermion fields, this model successfully describes various features of the fermion masses and mixings including large neutrino mixings accompanied by small quark mixings. In this model the flavor violation is induced at GUT scale, at which $A_4$ flavor symmetry is broken, as a consequence of the large mixings of the light fermion fields with these exotic heavy fields. The stringent experimental constraint from $μ\righ…
In this paper, the possibility to have new physics is considered at the scale of the electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) in a completely new framework. A new non-standard minimal chiral fermion extension of the Standard Model (SM) which renders the complete model free from anomalies is included. The new fermionic matter coupled with scalar leptoquaks (SLQ) developing new signals for exotic fermions that could be evaluated in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Analysis based on the cross-section final states shows that the channels $D_{-1/3}\overline{D}_{-1/3}\rightarrow jj+\notin$ and $D_{-1/3}…
The observation of the exotic quarkonium state Z_c(3900) by the BESIII and Belle collaborations supports the concept of hadronic molecules. Charmonium states interpreted as such molecules would be bound states of heavy particles with small binding energies. This motivates their description using an effective theory with contact interactions. In particular, we focus on the electromagnetic structure of the charged state Z_c(3900). Using first experimental results concerning spin and parity, we interpret it as an S-wave molecule and calculate the form factors as well as charge and magnetic radii …
Exotic states have been predicted before and after the advent of QCD. In the last decades they have been observed at accelerator experiments in the sector with two heavy quarks, at or above the quarkonium strong decay threshold and called X Y Z states. These states offer a unique possibility for investigating the dynamical properties of strongly correlated systems in QCD. I will show how an alliance of nonrelativistic effective field theories and lattice can allow us to address these states in QCD. In particular I will explain what are the opportunities and challenges of lattice QCD in this re…
A compact object with a mass $\mathcal{O}(1 \sim 1000) M_{\odot}$, such as a black hole of stellar or primordial origin or a neutron star, and a much lighter exotic compact object with a subsolar mass could form a non-standard mini extreme mass ratio inspiral (EMRI) and emit gravitational waves within the frequency band of ground-based gravitational-wave detectors. These systems are extremely interesting because detecting them would definitively point to new physics. We study the capability of using LIGO/Virgo to search for mini-EMRIs and find that a large class of exotic compact objects can b…
