For asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds with hyperbolic trapped sets we prove a fractal upper bound on the number of resonances near the essential spectrum, with power determined by the dimension of the trapped set. This covers the case of general convex cocompact quotients (including the case of connected trapped sets) where our result implies a bound on the number of zeros of the Selberg zeta function in disks of arbitrary size along the imaginary axis. Although no sharp fractal lower bounds are known, the case of quasifuchsian groups, included here, is most likely to provide them.
We prove a Weyl upper bound on the number of scattering resonances in strips for manifolds with Euclidean infinite ends. In contrast with previous results, we do not make any strong structural assumptions on the geodesic flow on the trapped set (such as hyperbolicity) and instead use propagation statements up to the Ehrenfest time. By a similar method we prove a decay statement with high probability for linear waves with random initial data. The latter statement is related heuristically to the Weyl upper bound. For geodesic flows with positive escape rate, we obtain a power improvement over th…
We give a new fractal Weyl upper bound for resonances of convex co-compact hyperbolic manifolds in terms of the dimension $n$ of the manifold and the dimension $δ$ of its limit set. More precisely, we show that as $R\to\infty$, the number of resonances in the box $[R,R+1]+i[-β,0]$ is $O(R^{m(β,δ)+})$, where the exponent $m(β,δ)=\min(2δ+2β+1-n,δ)$ changes its behavior at $β=(n-1-δ)/2$. In the case $δ<(n-1)/2$, we also give an improved resolvent upper bound in the standard resonance free strip $\{\mathrm{Im}\ λ > δ-(n-1)/2\}$. Both results use the fractal uncertainty principle point of view rece…
We study the semiclassical quantization of Poincaré maps arising in scattering problems with fractal hyperbolic trapped sets. The main application is the proof of a fractal Weyl upper bound for the number of resonances/scattering poles in small domains near the real axis. This result encompasses the case of several convex (hard) obstacles satisfying a no-eclipse condition.
We study the distribution of eigenvalues for non-selfadjoint perturbations of selfadjoint semiclassical analytic pseudodifferential operators in dimension two, assuming that the classical flow of the unperturbed part is completely integrable. An asymptotic formula of Weyl type for the number of eigenvalues in a spectral band, bounded from above and from below by levels corresponding to Diophantine invariant Lagrangian tori, is established. The Weyl law is given in terms of the long time averages of the leading non-selfadjoint perturbation along the classical flow of the unperturbed part.
In this note we compare two recent results about the distribution of eigenvalues for semi-classical pseudodifferential operators in two dimensions. For classes of analytic operators A. Melin and the author obtained a complex Bohr-Sommerfeld rule, showing that the eigenvalues are situated on a distorted lattice. On the other hand, with M. Hager we showed in any dimension that Weyl asymptotics holds with probability close to 1 for small random perturbations of the operator. In both cases the eigenvalues distribute to leading order according two smooth densities and we show here that the two dens…
In this paper, we are interested in the problem of scattering by strictly convex obstacles in the plane. We provide an upper bound for the number $N(r,γ)$ of resonances in the box $\{r \le \Re(λ) \le r + 1$; $\Im(λ) \ge - γ\}$. It was proved in a work of S. Nonnenmacher, J. Sj{ö}strand and M. Zworski (2014) that $N (r,γ) = O_γ(r^{d_H})$ where $2d_H + 1$ is the Hausdorff dimension of the trapped set of the billiard flow. In this article, we provide an improved upper bound in the band $0 \le γ< γ_{cl} /2$, where $γ_{cl}$ is the classical decay rate of the flow. This improved Weyl upper bound is …
Under suitable invertibility hypothesis, the spectrum of the Dirac operator on certain open spin Riemannian manifolds is discrete, and obeys a growth law depending qualitatively on the (in)finiteness of the volume.
We consider the Schrödinger operators $H_V=-Δ_g+V$ with singular potentials $V$ on general $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifolds and study whether various forms of pointwise Weyl law remain valid under this pertubation. We prove that the pointwise Weyl law holds for potentials in the Kato class, which is the minimal assumption to ensure that $H_V$ is essentially self-adjoint and bounded from below or has favorable heat kernel bounds. Moreover, we show that the pointwise Weyl law with the standard sharp error term $O(λ^{n-1})$ holds for potentials in $L^n(M)$.

For a Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ which is isometric to the Euclidean space outside of a compact set, and whose trapped set has Liouville measure zero, we prove Weyl type asymptotics for the scattering phase with remainder depending on the classical escape rate and the maximal expansion rate. For Axiom A geodesic flows, this gives a polynomial improvement over the known remainders. We also show that the remainder can be bounded above by the number of resonances in some neighbourhoods of the real axis, and provide similar asymptotics for hyperbolic quotients using the Selberg zeta function.
We study eigenvalues of quantum open baker's maps with trapped sets given by linear arithmetic Cantor sets of dimensions $δ\in (0,1)$. We show that the size of the spectral gap is strictly greater than the standard bound $\max(0,{1\over 2}-δ)$ for all values of $δ$, which is the first result of this kind. The size of the improvement is determined from a fractal uncertainty principle and can be computed for any given Cantor set. We next show a fractal Weyl upper bound for the number of eigenvalues in annuli, with exponent which depends on the inner radius of the annulus.
