We investigate the extinction together with the radial velocity dispersion and distribution of red clump stars in the anti-center direction using spectra obtained with Hectospec on the MMT. We find that extinction peaks at Galactocentric radii of about 9.5 and 12.5 kpc, right in front of the locations of the Perseus and Outer arms and in line with the relative position of dust and stars in external spiral galaxies. The radial velocity dispersion peaks around 10kpc, which coincides with the location of the Perseus arm, yields an estimated arm-interarm density contrast of 1.3-1.5 and is in agreement with previous studies. Finally, we discover that the radial velocity distribution bifurcates around 10-11 kpc into two peaks at +27 km/s and -4 km/s. This seems to be naturally explained by the presence of the outer Lindblad resonance of the Galactic bar, but further observations will be needed to understand if the corotation resonance of the spirals arms also plays a role.
We have discovered a clear sign of the disruption phase of the Perseus arm in the Milky Way using Cepheid variables, taking advantage of the accurately measured distances of Cepheids and the proper motions from Gaia Data Release 1. Both the Galactocentric radial and rotation velocities of 77 Cepheids within 1.5 kpc of the Perseus arm are correlated with their distances from the locus of the Perseus arm, as the trailing side is rotating faster and moving inward compared to the leading side. We also found a negative vertex deviation for the Cepheids on the trailing side, $-27.6\pm2.4$ deg, in co…
We report measurements of parallax and proper motion for five 6.7-GHz methanol maser sources in the outer regions of the Perseus arm as part of the BeSSeL Survey of the Galaxy. By combining our results with previous astrometric results, we determine an average spiral arm pitch angle of $9.2\pm1.5$ deg and an arm width of 0.39 kpc for this spiral arm. For sources in the interior side of the Perseus arm, we find on average a radial inward motion in the Galaxy of $13.3\pm5.4$ km s$^{-1}$ and counter to Galactic rotation of $6.2\pm3.2$ km s$^{-1}$. These characteristics are consistent with models …
In this work we demonstrate that the Perseus Arm is not a continuous structure of molecular gas in the second quadrant. We first show that the observed, distanced-resolved velocity structure of the Galaxy in the outer disk is capable of creating illusory spiral arms, as was first proposed by Burton (1971). Second, we measure the distances to a collection of CO clouds at velocities consistent with the Perseus arm with $135^\circ < l < 160^\circ$. We find these distances using 3D dust maps from Green et al. (2019). We determine that these molecular cloud do not preferentially lie at the distance…
We report trigonometric parallax measurements of 22 GHz H$_2$O masers in two massive star-forming regions from VLBA observations as part of the BeSSeL Survey. The distances of $11.11^{+0.79}_{-0.69}$ kpc to W49N (G043.16+0.01) and $10.75^{+0.61}_{-0.55}$ kpc to G048.60+0.02 locate them in a distant section of the Perseus arm near the solar circle in the first Galactic quadrant. This allows us to locate accurately the inner portion of the Perseus arm for the first time. Combining the present results with sources measured in the outer portion of the arm in the second and third quadrants yields a…
We report trigonometric parallaxes and proper motions of water masers for 12 massive star forming regions in the Perseus spiral arm of the Milky Way as part of the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy (BeSSeL) Survey. Combining our results with 14 parallax measurements in the literature, we estimate a pitch angle of 9.9 +/- 1.5 degrees for a section of the Perseus arm. The three-dimensional Galactic peculiar motions of these sources indicate that on average they are moving toward the Galactic center and slower than the Galactic rotation.
Aims. The main goal of this study is to detect the stellar overdensity associated with the Perseus arm in the anticenter direction. Methods. We used the physical parameters derived from Strömgren photometric data to compute the surface density distribution as a function of galactocentric distance for different samples of intermediate young stars. The radial distribution of the interstellar absorption has also been derived. Results. We detected the Perseus arm stellar overdensity at 1.6+-0.2 kpc from the Sun with a significance of 4-5σ and a surface density amplitude of around 10%, slightly dep…

We report on the detection of a small overdensity of stars in velocity space with systematically higher Galactocentric rotation velocity than the Sun by about 20 km s$^{-1}$ in the $Gaia$ Data Release 1 Tycho-Gaia astrometric solution (TGAS) data. We find these fast Galactic rotators more clearly outside of the Solar radius, compared to inside of the Solar radius. In addition, the velocity of the fast Galactic rotators is independent of the Galactocentric distance up to $R-R_{\odot}\sim0.6$ kpc. Comparing with numerical models, we qualitatively discuss that a possible cause of this feature is …
We present a new analysis of the properties of star-forming cores in the Perseus molecular cloud, identified in SCUBA 850 micron data. Our goal is to determine which core properties can be robustly identified and which depend on the extraction technique. Four regions in the cloud are examined: NGC1333, IC348/HH211, L1448 and L1455. We identify clumps of dust emission using two popular automated algorithms, CLFIND and GAUSSCLUMPS, finding 85 and 122 clumps in total respectively. Some trends are true for both populations: clumps become increasingly elongated over time and are consistent with con…
The radial distance to the co-rotation radius Rcoro (where the angular speed of the gas and stars in orbit around the Galactic Centre is equal to the angular speed of the spiral arm pattern) has often been predicted (at various places), but not measured with a high precision. Here we test the locations of masers with respect to the Perseus arm (Table 1). Our analysis of the masers and HII regions near the Perseus arm (mostly located on the inner arm side, by about 0.4 kpc from the cold CO mid-arm) shows that the co-rotation Rcoro must be > 10.8 kpc from the Galactic Center (Figure 1). This imp…
We present results of a survey of 14 star-forming regions from the Perseus spiral arm in CS(2-1) and 13CO(1-0) lines with the Onsala Space Observatory 20 m telescope. Maps of 10 sources in both lines were obtained. For the remaining sources a map in just one line or a single-point spectrum were obtained. On the basis of newly obtained and published observational data we consider the relation between velocities of the "quasi-thermal" CS(2-1) line and 6.7 GHz methanol maser line in 24 high-mass star-forming regions in the Perseus arm. We show that, surprisingly, velocity ranges of 6.7 GHz methan…
We present continuum observations of the Perseus B1-E region from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey. These Herschel data reveal a loose grouping of substructures at 160 - 500 micron not seen in previous submillimetre observations. We measure temperature and column density from these data and select the nine densest and coolest substructures for follow-up spectral line observations with the Green Bank Telescope. We find that the B1-E clump has a mass of ~ 100 solar masses and appears to be gravitationally bound. Furthermore, of the nine substructures examined here, one substructure (B1-E2) appears…
We explore the kinematics of continuum clumps in the Perseus molecular cloud, derived from C18O J=3-2 data. Two populations are examined, identified using the automated algorithms CLFIND and GAUSSCLUMPS on existing SCUBA data. The clumps have supersonic linewidths with distributions which suggest the C18O line probes a lower-density 'envelope' rather than a dense inner core. Similar linewidth distributions for protostellar and starless clumps implies protostars do not have a significant impact on their immediate environment. The proximity to an active young stellar cluster seems to affect the …
Using the Purple Mountain Observatory Delingha (PMODLH) 13.7 m telescope, we report a 96-square-degree 12CO/13CO/C18O mapping observation toward the Galactic region of l = [139.75, 149.75]$^\circ$, b = [-5.25, 5.25]$^\circ$. The molecular structure of the Local Arm and Perseus Arm are presented. Combining HI data and part of the Outer Arm results, we obtain that the warp structure of both atomic and molecular gas is obvious, while the flare structure only exists in atomic gas in this observing region. In addition, five filamentary giant molecular clouds on the Perseus Arm are identified. Among…
This study extends to the structure of the Galaxy. Our main goal is to focus on the first spiral arm beyond the Perseus arm, often called the Cygnus arm or the Outer Norma arm, by appraising the distributions of the masers near the Cygnus arm. The method is to employ masers whose trigonometric distances were measured with accuracy. The maser data come from published literature, having been obtained via the existing networks (US VLBA, the Japanese VERA, the European VLBI, and the Australian LBA). The new results for Cygnus are split in two groups: those located near a recent CO fitted global mo…
The Perseus arm has a gap in Galactic longitudes (l) between 50 and 80 deg (hereafter the Perseus arm gap) where the arm has little star formation activity. To better understand the gap, we conducted astrometric observations with VERA and analyzed archival H I data. We report on parallax and proper motion results from four star-forming regions, of which G050.28-00.39 and G070.33+01.59 are likely associated with the gap. The measured parallaxes are 0.140+/-0.018 (mas), 0.726+/-0.038 (mas), 0.074+/-0.037 (mas), and 0.118+/-0.035 (mas) for G050.28-00.39, G053.14+00.07, G070.33+01.59, and G079.08+…
We present Herschel observations from the Herschel Gould Belt Survey and SCUBA-2 science verification observations from the JCMT Gould Belt Survey of the B1 clump in the Perseus molecular cloud. We determined the dust emissivity index using four different techniques to combine the Herschel PACS+SPIRE data at 160 - 500 microns with the SCUBA-2 data at 450 microns and 850 microns. Of our four techniques, we found the most robust method was to filter-out the large-scale emission in the Herschel bands to match the spatial scales recovered by the SCUBA-2 reduction pipeline. Using this method, we fi…
The dust emissivity spectral index, $β$, is a critical parameter for deriving the mass and temperature of star-forming structures, and consequently their gravitational stability. The $β$ value is dependent on various dust grain properties, such as size, porosity, and surface composition, and is expected to vary as dust grains evolve. Here we present $β$, dust temperature, and optical depth maps of the star-forming clumps in the Perseus Molecular Cloud determined from fitting SEDs to combined Herschel and JCMT observations in the 160 $μ$m, 250 $μ$m, 350 $μ$m, 500 $μ$m, and 850 $μ$m bands. Most …
We report the results from a new, highly sensitive ($ΔT_{mb} \sim 3 $mK) survey for thermal OH emission at 1665 and 1667 MHz over a dense, 9 x 9-pixel grid covering a $1°$ x $1°$ patch of sky in the direction of $l = 105°, b = +2.50°$ towards the Perseus spiral arm of our Galaxy. We compare our Green Bank Telescope (GBT) 1667 MHz OH results with archival CO J=1-0 observations from the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO) Outer Galaxy Survey within the velocity range of the Perseus Arm at these galactic coordinates. Out of the 81 statistically-independent pointings in our survey are…
We report trigonometric parallax and proper motion measurements of 6.7-GHz CH3OH and 22-GHz H2O masers in eight high-mass star-forming regions (HMSFRs) based on VLBA observations as part of the BeSSeL Survey. The distances of these HMSFRs combined with their Galactic coordinates, radial velocities, and proper motions, allow us to assign them to a segment of the Perseus arm with ~< 70 deg. These HMSFRs are clustered in Galactic longitude from ~30 deg to ~50, neighboring a dirth of such sources between longitudes ~50 deg to ~90 deg.
In this letter we present evidence of coherent outward motion of a sample of young stars ($t<$30 Myr) in the Perseus Arm, whose apparent origin is located in the vicinity of the W3/W4/W5 complex. Using astrometric and photometric data from the Gaia DR2 catalog of an 8$^\circ$ radius field centered near W4, we selected a sample of young, intermediate to high-mass star candidates. The sample is limited to sources with parallax uncertainties below 20% and Bayesian distance estimates within 1800 and 3100 pc. The selection includes embedded stellar populations as well as young open clusters. Projec…
The Fan Region is one of the dominant features in the polarized radio sky, long thought to be a local (distance < 500 pc) synchrotron feature. We present 1.3-1.8 GHz polarized radio continuum observations of the region from the Global Magneto-Ionic Medium Survey (GMIMS) and compare them to maps of Halpha and polarized radio continuum intensity from 0.408-353 GHz. The high-frequency (> 1 GHz) and low-frequency (< 600 MHz) emission have different morphologies, suggesting a different physical origin. Portions of the 1.5 GHz Fan Region emission are depolarized by about 30% by ionized gas structure…

In the present work we investigate the properties of 18 embedded clusters (ECs). The sample includes 11 previously known clusters and we report the discovery of 7 ECs on WISE images, thus complementing our recent list of 437 new clusters. The main goal is to use such clusters to shed new light on the Galactic structure by tracing the spiral arms with cluster distances. Our results favour a four-armed spiral pattern tracing three arms, Sagitarius-Carina, Perseus, and the Outer arm. The Sagitarius-Carina spiral arm is probed in the borderline of the third and fourth quadrants at a distance from …
We present a new catalogue of cool supergiants in a section of the Perseus arm, most of which had not been previously identified. To generate it, we have used a set of well-defined photometric criteria to select a large number of candidates (637) that were later observed at intermediate resolution in the the Infrared Calcium Triplet spectral range, using a long-slit spectrograph. To separate red supergiants from luminous red giants, we used a statistical method, developed in previous works and improved in the present paper. We present a method to assign probabilities of being a red supergiant …
Trigonometric parallax measurements of nine water masers associated with the Local arm of the Milky Way were carried out as part of the BeSSeL Survey using the VLBA. When combined with 21 other parallax measurements from the literature, the data allow us to study the distribution and 3-dimensional motions of star forming regions in the spiral arm over the entire northern sky. Our results suggest that the Local arm does not have the large pitch angle characteristic of a short spur. Instead its active star formation, overall length (>5 kpc), and shallow pitch angle (~10 degrees) suggest that it …
The INT Photometric H$α$ Survey (IPHAS) has provided us with a number of new-emission line sources, among which planetary nebulae (PNe) constitute an important fraction. Here we present a detailed analysis of the IPHAS nebula Sab\,19 (IPHASX\,J055242.8+262116) based on radio, infrared, and optical images and intermediate- and high-dispersion longslit spectra. Sab\,19 consists of a roundish 0.10 pc in radius double-shell nebula surrounded by a much larger 2.8 pc in radius external shell with a prominent H-shaped filament. We confirm the nature of the main nebula as a PN whose sub-solar N/O rati…

Our aim is to measure the interstellar 14N/15N ratio across the Galaxy, to establish a standard data set on interstellar ammonia isotope ratios, and to provide new constraints on the Galactic chemical evolution. The (J, K ) = (1, 1), (2, 2), and (3, 3) lines of 14NH3 and 15NH3 were observed with the Shanghai Tianma 65 m radio telescope (TMRT) and the Effelsberg 100 m telescope toward a large sample of 210 sources. One hundred fourty-one of these sources were detected by the TMRT in 14NH3. Eight of them were also detected in 15NH3. For 10 of the 36 sources with strong NH3 emission, the Effelsbe…
We positionally match a sample of infrared-selected young stellar objects (YSOs), identified by combining the Spitzer GLIMPSE, WISE and Herschel Space Observatory Hi-GAL surveys, to the dense clumps identified in the millimetre continuum by the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey in two Galactic lines of sight centred towards l = 30deg and l = 40deg. We calculate the ratio of infrared luminosity, L_IR, to the mass of the clump, M_clump, in a variety of Galactic environments and find it to be somewhat enhanced in spiral arms compared to the interarm regions when averaged over kiloparsec scales. We fi…
We investigate a region of the Galactic plane, between 120 <= l <= 140 and -1 <= b <= +4, and uncover a population of moderately reddened (E(B-V) \sim 1) classical Be stars within and beyond the Perseus and Outer Arms. 370 candidate emission line stars (13 <= r <= 16) selected from the INT Photometric H-alpha Survey of the Northern Galactic plane (IPHAS) have been followed up spectroscopically. A subset of these, 67 stars with properties consistent with those of classical Be stars, have been observed at sufficient spectral resolution (Delta_lambda \sim 2 - 4 Angstrom) at blue wavelengths to na…
The Perseus Arm is the closest Galactic spiral arm from the Sun, offering an excellent opportunity to study in detail its stellar population. However, its distance has been controversial with discrepancies by a factor of two. Kinematic distances are in the range 3.9-4.2 kpc as compared to 1.9-2.3 kpc from spectrophotometric and trigonometric parallaxes, reinforcing previous claims that this arm exhibits peculiar velocities. We used the astrometric information of a sample of 31 OB stars from the star-forming W3 Complex to identify another 37 W3 members and to derive its distance from their Gaia…
The Galactic center of the Milky-Way harbors a massive black hole (BH) orbited by a diverse population of young and old stars. A significant fraction of the youngest stars ($\sim4-7$ Myr) reside in a thin stellar disk with puzzling properties; the disk appears to be warped, shows asymmetries, and contains one or more clumpy structures (e.g. IRS 13). Models explaining the clumping invoked the existence of an intermediate-mass BH of $10^{3}-10^{4}$ M$_{\odot}$, but no kinematic evidence for such a BH has been found. Here we use extended $N$-body simulations and hybrid self-consistent field metho…
We report measurement of trigonometric parallax of IRAS 05168+3634 with VERA. The parallax is 0.532 +/- 0.053 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.88+0.21/-0.17 kpc. This result is significantly smaller than the previous distance estimate of 6 kpc based on kinematic distance. This drastic change in the source distance revises not only physical parameters of IRAS 05168+3634, but also its location of the source, placing it in the Perseus arm rather than the Outer arm. We also measure proper motions of the source. A combination of the distance and the proper motions with systemic velocity yields…
Using the cross-matched data of Gaia DR2 and 2MASS Point Source Catalog, we investigated the surface density distribution of stars aged ~1 Gyr in the thin disk in the range of 90° <= l <= 270°. We selected 4,654 stars above the turnoff corresponding to the age ~1 Gyr, that fall within a small box region in the color-magnitude diagram, (J-Ks)0 versus M(Ks), for which the distance and reddening are corrected. The selected sample shows an arm-like overdensity at 90° <= l <= 190°.This overdensity is located close to the Local arm traced by high-mass star forming regions (HMSFRs), but its pitch ang…
Fragmentation of a spiral arm is thought to drive the formation of giant clumps in galaxies. Using linear perturbation analysis for self-gravitating spiral arms, we derive an instability parameter and define the conditions for clump formation. We extend our analysis to multi-component systems that consist of gas and stars in an external potential. We then perform numerical simulations of isolated disc galaxies with isothermal gas, and compare the results with the prediction of our analytic model. Our model describes accurately the evolution of the spiral arms in our simulations, even when spir…
We report the discovery of a likely outbursting Class I young stellar object, associated with the star-forming region NGC 281-W (distance $\sim 2.8$ kpc). The source is currently seen only at infrared wavelengths, appearing in both the Palomar Gattini InfraRed ($1.2~μ$m) and the Near Earth Object Widefield Infrared Survey Explorer ($3.4$ and $4.6~μ$m) photometric time-domain surveys. Recent near-infrared imaging reveals a new, extended scattered light nebula. Recent near-infrared spectroscopy confirms the similarity of PGIR 20dci to FU Ori type sources, based on strong molecular absorption in …

We present a measurement of the trigonometric parallax of IRAS 05168+3634 with VERA. The parallax is 0.532 +/- 0.053 mas, corresponding to a distance of 1.88 +0.21/-0.17 kpc. This is significantly closer than the previous distance estimate of 6 kpc based on a kinematic distance measurement. This drastic change in the source distance implies the need for revised values of not only the physical parameters of IRAS 05168+3634, but it also implies a different location in the Galaxy, placing it in the Perseus arm rather than the Outer arm. We also measured the proper motion of the source. A combinat…
The line of sight through the Galactic Plane between longitudes l = 37.83 degr and l = 42.50 degr allows for the separation of Galactic Ring Survey molecular clouds into those that fall within the spiral arms and those located in the inter-arm regions. By matching these clouds in both position and velocity with dense clumps detected in the mm continuum by the Bolocam Galactic Plane Survey, we are able to look for changes in the clump formation efficiency (CFE), the ratio of clump-to-cloud mass, with Galactic environment. We find no evidence of any difference in the CFE between the inter-arm an…
Using the Purple Mountain Observatory Delingha 13.7 m telescope, we conducted a large-scale $^{12}$CO $\left(J=1 \rightarrow 0\right)$ outflow survey (over $\sim$ 110 deg$^2$) toward the W3/4/5 complex and its surroundings. In total, 459 outflow candidates were identified. Approximately 62\% (284) were located in the Perseus arm, including W3/4/5 complex and its surroundings, while $\sim$ 35\% (162) were located in the Local arm, $\sim$ 1\% (5) in the Outer arm, and $\sim$ 2\% (8) in two interarm regions. This result indicated that star formation was concentrated in the Galactic spiral arms. T…
What role does Galactic structure play in star formation? We have used the Herschel Hi-GAL compact-clump catalogue to examine trends in evolutionary stage over large spatial scales in the inner Galaxy. We examine the relationship between the fraction of clumps with embedded star formation (the star-forming fraction, or SFF) and other measures of star-formation activity. Based on a positive correlation between SFF and evolutionary indicators such as the luminosity-to-mass ratio, we assert that the SFF principally traces the average evolutionary state of a sample and must depend on the local fra…
Using the cross-matched data of Gaia EDR3 and the 2MASS Point Source Catalog, a sample of RC stars with parallax accuracies better than 20% is identified and used to reveal the nearby spiral pattern traced by old stars. As shown in the overdensity distribution of RC stars, there is an arc-like feature extended from $l~\sim$ 90$^\circ$ to $\sim$ 243$^\circ$, which passed close to the Sun. This feature is probably an arm segment traced by old stars, indicating the Galaxy potential in the vicinity of the Sun. By comparing to the spiral arms depicted by young objects, we found that there are consi…
We report the discovery of the new pulsar wind nebula (PWN) G141.2+5.0 in data observed with the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory's Synthesis Telescope at 1420 MHz. The new PWN has a diameter of about 3.5', which translates at a distance of 4.0 kpc to a spatial extent of about 4 pc. It displays a radio spectral index of $α\approx -0.7$, similar to the PWN G76.9+1.1. G141.2+5.0 is highly polarized up to 40% with an average of 15% in the 1420 MHz data. It is located in the centre of a small spherical HI bubble, which is expanding at a velocity of 6 km/s. The bubble's systemic velocity is…
We have studied the properties of molecular clouds in the second quadrant of the Milky Way Mid-plane from l$=$104$.\!\!^{\circ}$75 to l$=$119$.\!\!^{\circ}$75 and b$=-$5$.\!\!^{\circ}$25 to b$=$5$.\!\!^{\circ}$25 using the $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O $J=1-0$ emission line data from the Milky Way Imaging Scroll Painting project (MWISP). We have identified 857 and 300 clouds in the $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO spectral cubes, respectively, using the DENDROGRAM + SCIMES algorithms. The distances of the molecular clouds are estimated and the physical properties like masses, sizes, and surface d…
We model the gas dynamics of barred galaxies using a three-dimensional, high-resolution, $N$-body+hydrodynamical simulation and apply it to the Milky Way in an attempt to reproduce both the large-scale structure and the clumpy morphology observed in Galactic H\emissiontype{I} and CO $l-v$ diagrams. Owing to including the multi-phase interstellar medium, self-gravity, star-formation and supernovae feedback, the clumpy morphology, as well as the large-scale features, in observed $l-v$ diagrams are naturally reproduced. We identify in our $l-v$ diagrams with a number of not only large-scale pecul…
Carbon Radio Recombination Lines trace the interface between molecular and atomic gas. We present GMRT observations of Carbon Radio Recombination Lines (CRRL), C$α$244-C$α$250 towards Cassiopeia A. We use a novel technique of stacking the emission lines in the visibility domain to obtain, for the first time, sub-pc resolution optical depth maps of these CRRLs. The emission shows a wide range of spatial and velocity structures, some of which are unresolved within our synthesis beam of 0.29 pc and velocity channel of 0.55 km/s. These variations in the emission optical depth and line width are in…
We report the trigonometric parallax of IRAS 07427-2400 with VERA to be 0.185 $\pm$ 0.027 mas, corresponding to a distance of 5.41$^{+0.92}_{-0.69}$ kpc. The result is consistent with the previous result of 5.32$^{+0.49}_{-0.42}$ kpc obtained by Choi et al. (2014) within error. To remove the effect of internal maser motions (e.g., random motions), we observed six maser features associated with IRAS 07427-2400 and determined systematic proper motions of the source by averaging proper motions of the six maser features. The obtained proper motions are ($μ_α$cos$δ$, $μ_δ$) = ($-$1.79 $\pm$ 0.32, 2…
We have identified a spiral arm lying beyond the Outer Arm in the first Galactic quadrant ~15 kpc from the Galactic center. After tracing the arm in existing 21 cm surveys, we searched for molecular gas using the CfA 1.2 meter telescope and detected CO at 10 of 220 positions. The detections are distributed along the arm from l = 13 deg, v = -21 km/s to l = 55 deg, v = -84 km/s and coincide with most of the main H I concentrations. One of the detections was fully mapped to reveal a large molecular cloud with a radius of 47 pc and a molecular mass of ~50,000 Mo. At a mean distance of 21 kpc, the…
By combining two surveys covering a large fraction of the molecular material in the Galactic disk we investigate the role the spiral arms play in the star formation process. We have matched clumps identified by ATLASGAL with their parental GMCs as identified by SEDIGISM, and use these giant molecular cloud (GMC) masses, the bolometric luminosities, and integrated clump masses obtained in a concurrent paper to estimate the dense gas fractions (DGF$_{\rm gmc}=\sum M_{\rm clump}/M_{\rm gmc}$) and the instantaneous star forming efficiencies (i.e., SFE$_{\rm gmc} = \sum L_{\rm clump}/M_{\rm gmc}$).…
Fragmentation of spiral arms can drive the formation of giant clumps and induce intense star formation in disc galaxies. Based on the spiral-arm instability analysis of our Paper I, we present linear perturbation theory of dynamical instability of self-gravitating spiral arms of magnetised gas, focusing on the effect of toroidal magnetic fields. Spiral arms can be destabilised by the toroidal fields which cancel Coriolis force, i.e. magneto-Jeans instability. Our analysis can be applied to multi-component systems that consist of gas and stars. To test our analysis, we perform ideal magneto-hyd…
We present a photometric study of five open clusters (Czernik 5, Alessi 53, Berkeley 49, Berkeley 84, and Pfleiderer 3) in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The position and size of these clusters are determined using the radial number density profiles of the stars, and the member stars of the clusters are selected using the proper motion data in the literature. We estimate the reddening, distance, and age of the clusters based on the isochrone fitting in the color-magnitude diagram. The foreground reddenings for these clusters are estimated to be E(B-V) = 0.71 - 1.55 mag. The distances to these c…
