We study the non-radial oscillations of relativistic neutron stars, in particular the (fundamental) f-modes, which are believed to be the most relevant for the gravitational wave emission of perturbed isolated stars. The expected frequencies of the f-modes are compared to the sensitivity range of Mario Schenberg, the Brazilian gravitational wave spherical detector.
We compute the equilibrium, the fundamental eigenfrequency of oscillations modes, and quadrupolar tidal deformability of anisotropic polytropic spheres. These studies are respectively performed through the numerical solution of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equation, Chandrasekhar radial oscillation equations, and nonlinear first-order Riccati equation for tidal deformability, all modified from their original version to include the anisotropic effects. For the polytropic exponent $γ=2$ and the anisotropic model of Cattoen, Faber, and Visser, we show that the anisotropy could be reflected in t…
We compute the lowest frequency non-radial oscillation modes of dilute axion stars. The effective potential that enters into the Schr{ö}dinger-like equation, several associated eigenfunctions, and the large as well as the small frequency separations are shown as well.
We revisit the problem of radial pulsations of neutron stars by computing four general-relativistic polytropic models, in which "density" and "adiabatic index" are involved with their discrete meanings: (i) "rest-mass density" or (ii) "mass-energy density" regarding the density, and (i) "constant" or (ii) "variable" regarding the adiabatic index. Considering the resulting four discrete combinations, we construct corresponding models and compute for each model the frequencies of the lowest three radial modes. Comparisons with previous results are made. The deviations of respective frequencies o…
In this paper we present a generic formulation of the linearized dynamical equations governing small adiabatic radial oscillations of relativistic stars. The dynamical equations are derived by taking into consideration those effects of viscosity and thermal conductivity of neutron-star matter which directly determine the minimum period of observable pulsars. A variational principle is applied to determine a discrete set of eigenfunctions with complex eigenvalues. The real and imaginary parts of eigenvalues represent the squared natural frequencies and relaxation time of radial oscillations of …
In this work we construct families of anisotropic neutron stars for an equation of state compatible with the constraints of the gravitational-wave event GW170817 and for four anisotropy ansatze. Such stars are subjected to a radial perturbation in order to study their stability against radial oscillations and we develop a dynamical model to describe the non-adiabatic gravitational collapse of the unstable anisotropic configurations whose ultimate fate is the formation of a black hole. We find that the standard criterion for radial stability $dM/dρ_c >0$ is not always compatible with the calcul…
We compare different gravitational-wave extraction methods used in three-dimensional nonlinear simulations against linear simulations of perturbations of spherical spacetimes with matter. We present results from fully general-relativistic simulations of a system composed by an oscillating and non-rotating star emitting gravitational radiation. Results about the onset of non-linear effects are also shown.
We construct stellar models of hadron stars and hybrid stars and calculate the frequencies of their lowest radial mode of vibration. Chandrasekhar's equation for radial oscillations is generalized for stars with internal electric fields and earlier versions of that generalization are simplified. For the hybrid stars a Gibbs construction is employed. It is found that the softening of the equation of state associated with the presence of deconfined quarks reduces the oscillation frequency. We show that a slight charge inbalance should lead to increased maximum mass, decreased central density and…
The model of current-carrying string loop oscillations is tested to explain the special set of frequencies related to the high-frequency quasiperiodic oscillations (HF QPOs) observed recently in the low-mass X-ray binary XTE J1701-407 containing a neutron star. The external geometry of the neutron star is approximated by the Kerr geometry, introducing errors not exceeding $10~\%$ for slowly rotating massive neutron stars. The frequencies of the radial and vertical string loop oscillations are then governed by the mass $M$ and dimensionless spin $a$ of the neutron star, and by the dimensionless…
This is a progress report on our study of the coupling of first-order radial and non-radial relativistic perturbations of a static spherical star. Our goal is to investigate the effects of this coupling on the gravitational wave signal of neutron stars. In particular, we are looking for the existence of resonances and parametric amplifications, changes in the damping time of non-radial oscillations, etc. To that end, we have developed a formalism that introduces gauge invariant quantities to describe the coupling. Their equations have the same structure as the equations for first-order non-rad…
We present a new survey of the radial oscillation modes of neutron stars. This study complements and corrects earlier studies of radial oscillations. We present an extensive list of frequencies for the most common equations of state and some more recent ones. In order to check the accuracy, we use two different numerical schemes which yield the same results. The stimulation for this work comes from the need of the groups that evolve the full nonlinear Einstein equation to have reliable results from perturbation theory for comparison.
One of the most common assumptions in the study of neutron star models and their oscillations is that the pressure is isotopic, however there are arguments that this may not be correct. Thus in the present paper we make a first step towards studying the nonradial oscillations of neutron stars with an anisotropic pressure. We adopt the so-called Cowling approximation where the spacetime metric is kept fixed and the oscillation spectrum for the first few fluid modes is obtained. The effect of the anisotropy on the frequencies is apparent, although with the present results it might be hard to dis…
We investigate the non-linear coupling between radial and non-radial oscillations of static spherically symmetric neutron stars as a possible mechanism for the generation of gravitational waves that may lead to observable signatures. In this paper we concentrate on the axial sector of the non-radial perturbations. By using a multi-parameter perturbative framework we introduce a complete description of the non-linear coupling between radial and axial non-radial oscillations; we study the gauge invariant character of the associated perturbative variables and develop a computational scheme to evo…
We review the derivation of the pulsations equations for spherically symmetric boson stars and then make a thorough study of the radial oscillation frequencies for the fundamental and first excited modes. We do this for self-interacting boson stars and consider a range of values for the self-coupling constant. We also numerically evolve boson stars and Fourier transform the dynamic solutions. The Fourier transform gives an independent computation of the radial oscillation frequencies and allows us to verify our results obtained from the pulsation equations. We find excellent agreement between …
The effects of nonlinear oscillations in compact stars are attracting considerable current interest. In order to study such phenomena in the framework of fully nonlinear general relativity, highly accurate numerical studies are required. We present a numerical scheme specifically tailored for studies, based on formulating the time evolution in terms of deviations from a stationary equilibrium configuration. Using this technique, we investigate nonlinear effects associated with radial oscillations of neutron stars for a wide range of amplitudes. In particular, we discuss mode coupling due to no…
The excitation of neutron stars is expected to be an important source of gravitational radiation. Of fundamental importance is then to investigate mechanisms that trigger oscillations in neutron stars in order to characterize the emitted radiation. We present results from a numerical study of the even-parity gravitational radiation generated from a particle orbiting a neutron star. We focus our investigation on those conditions on the orbital parameters that favor the excitation of $w$-modes. We find that, for astrophysically realistic conditions, there is practically no $w$-mode contribution …
The non-linear behaviour of oscillation modes in compact stars is a topic of considerable current interest. Accurate numerical studies of such phenomena are likely to require powerful new approaches to both fluid and spacetime computations. We propose that a key ingredient of such methods will be the non-linear evolution of deviations from the background stationary equilibrium star. We investigate the feasibility of this approach by applying it to non-linear radial oscillations of a neutron star, and explore numerically various non-linear features of this problem, for a large range of amplitud…
We perform a global linear perturbative analysis, and investigate the oscillation properties of relativistic, non-selfgravitating tori orbiting around neutron stars in the slow rotation limit approximation. Extending the work done in Schwarzschild and Kerr backgrounds, we consider the axisymmetric oscillations of vertically integrated tori in the Hartle-Thorne spacetime. The equilibrium models are constructed by selecting a number of different non-Keplerian distributions of specific angular momentum, allowing for disc sizes $L \sim 0.5 - 600$ gravitational radii. Our results, obtained after so…
We study the stability against infinitesimal radial oscillations of neutron stars generated by a set of equations of state obtained from first-principle calculations in cold and dense QCD and constrained by observational data. We consider mild and large violations of the conformal bound, $c_{s} = 1/\sqrt{3}$, in stars that can possibly contain a quark matter core. Some neutron star families in the mass-radius diagram become dynamically unstable due to large oscillation amplitudes near the core.
We study radial oscillations in non-rotating neutron stars by considering the unified equation of states (EoSs), which support the 2 M$_\odot$ star criterion. We solve the Sturm-Liouville problem to compute 20 lowest radial oscillation modes and their eigenfunctions for neutron star modelled with eight selected unified EoSs from distinct Skyrme-Hartree Fock, Relativistic Mean-Field and quarkyonic models. We compare the behavior of the computed eigenfrequency for NS modelled with hadronic to that with quarkyonic EoSs while varying central densities. The lowest order, f-mode frequency varies sub…
In this work, we have studied oscillations in the crust of a neutron star which magnetic field has both dipolar and toroidal components, the former extends from the stellar interior to the outer space and the later is confined inside the star radius. Our study is based on the solutions we have got for perturbations in the star fluid, confined to the crust thickness. Our results are compared to the frequencies observed in the Soft Gamma Repeaters signals.

We study the hydrostatic equilibrium structure of compact stars in the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld gravity recently proposed by Banados and Ferreira [Phys. Rev. Lett. 105, 011101 (2010)]. We also develop a framework to study the radial perturbations and stability of compact stars in this theory. We find that the standard results of stellar stability still hold in this theory. The frequency square of the fundamental oscillation mode vanishes for the maximum-mass stellar configuration. The dependence of the oscillation mode frequencies on the coupling parameter κof the theory is also investig…
In this paper we present a new method to extract cosmological parameters using the radial scale of the Baryon Acoustic Oscillations as a standard ruler in deep galaxy surveys. The method consists in an empirical parametrization of the radial 2-point correlation function, which provides a robust and precise extraction of the sound horizon scale. Moreover, it uses data from galaxy surveys in a manner that is fully cosmology independent and therefore, unbiased. A study of the main systematic errors and the validation of the method in cosmological simulations are also presented, showing that the m…
We study torsional oscillations of neutron stars in the scalar-tensor theory of gravity using the relativistic Cowling approximation. We compute unperturbed neutron star models adopting realistic equations of state for the neutron star's core and crust. For scalar-tensor theories that allow for spontaneous scalarization, the crust thickness can be significantly smaller than in general relativity. We derive the perturbation equation describing torsional oscillations in scalar-tensor theory, and we solve the corresponding eigenvalue problem to find the oscillation frequencies. The fundamental mo…
I derive a system of pulsation equations for compact stars made up of an arbitrary number of perfect fluids that can be used to study radial oscillations and stability with respect to small perturbations. I assume spherical symmetry and that the only inter-fluid interactions are gravitational. My derivation is in line with Chandrasekhar's original derivation for the pulsation equation of a single-fluid compact star and keeps the contributions from the individual fluids manifest. I illustrate solutions to the system of pulsations equations with one-, two-, and three-fluid examples.
We study the radial oscillations of non-rotating strange stars and their characteristic echo frequencies for three Equations of state (EoSs), viz., MIT Bag model EoS, linear EoS and polytropic EoS. The frequencies of radial oscillations of these compact stars are computed for these EoSs. 22 lowest radial frequencies for each of these three EoSs have been computed. First, for each EoS, we have integrated Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations numerically to calculate the radial and pressure perturbations of strange stars. Next, the mass-radius relationships for these stars are obtained usin…
We investigate the properties of relativistic stars made of dark energy. We model stellar structure assuming i) isotropic perfect fluid and ii) a dark energy inspired equation of state, the generalized equation of state of Chaplygin gas, as we will be calling it. The mass-to-radius profiles, the tidal Love numbers as well as the ten lowest radial oscillation modes are computed. Causality, stability and energy conditions are also discussed.
We investigated compact stars consisting of cold quark matter and fermionic dark matter treated as two admixed fluids. We computed the stellar structures and fundamental radial oscillation frequencies for different masses of the dark fermion in the cases of weak and strong self-interacting dark matter. We found that the fundamental frequency can be dramatically modified and, in some cases, stable dark strange planets and dark strangelets with very low masses and radii can be formed.
We perform the general relativistic stability analysis against radial oscillations of unpaired quark stars obtained using the equation of state for cold quark matter from perturbative QCD, the only free parameter being the renormalization scale. This approach consistently incorporates the effects of interactions and includes a built-in estimate of the inherent systematic uncertainties in the evaluation of the equation of state. We also take into account the constraints imposed by the recent gravitational wave event GW 170817 to the compact star masses and radii, and restrict their vibrational …
