The symmetric states on a quasi local C*-algebra on the infinite set of indices J are those invariant under the action of the group of the permutations moving only a finite, but arbitrary, number of elements of J. The celebrated De Finetti Theorem describes the structure of the symmetric states (i.e. exchangeable probability measures) in classical probability. In the present paper we extend De Finetti Theorem to the case of the CAR algebra, that is for physical systems describing Fermions. Namely, after showing that a symmetric state is automatically even under the natural action of the parity automorphism, we prove that the compact convex set of such states is a Choquet simplex, whose extremal (i.e. ergodic w.r.t. the action of the group of permutations previously described) are precisely the product states in the sense of Araki-Moriya. In order to do that, we also prove some ergodic properties naturally enjoyed by the symmetric states which have a self--containing interest.
Inspired by Lehner's results on exchangeability systems we define `weak conditional freeness' and `conditional freeness' for stationary processes in an operator algebraic framework of noncommutative probability. We show that these two properties are equivalent and thus the process embeds into a von Neumann algebraic amalgamated free product over the fixed point algebra of the stationary process.
The classical de Finetti theorem in probability theory relates symmetry under the permutation group with the independence of random variables. This result has application in quantum information. Here we study states that are invariant with respect to a natural action of the braid group, and we emphasize the pictorial formulation and interpretation of our results. We prove a new type of de Finetti theorem for the four-string, double-braid group acting on the parafermion algebra to braid qudits, a natural symmetry in the quon language for quantum information. We prove that a braid-invariant stat…
We prove several de Finetti theorems for the unitary dual group, also called the Brown algebra. Firstly, we provide a finite de Finetti theorem characterizing $R$-diagonal elements with an identical distribution. This is surprising, since it applies to finite sequences in contrast to the de Finetti theorems for classical and quantum groups; also, it does not involve any known independence notion. Secondly, considering infinite sequences in $W^*$-probability spaces, our characterization boils down to operator-valued free centered circular elements, as in the case of the unitary quantum group $U…
Local actions of $\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{N}$, the group of finite permutations on $\mathbb{N}$, on quasi-local algebras are defined and proved to be $\mathbb{P}_\mathbb{N}$-abelian. It turns out that invariant states under local actions are automatically even, and extreme invariant states are strongly clustering. Tail algebras of invariant states are shown to obey a form of the Hewitt and Savage theorem, in that they coincide with the fixed-point von Neumann algebra. Infinite graded tensor products of $C^*$-algebras, which include the CAR algebra, are then addressed as particular examples of quasi…
n the present note, which is the first part of a work concerning the study of the set of the symmetric states for Fermi systems, we describe the extension of the De Finetti theorem to the infinite Fermi $C^*$-tensor product of a single (separable) general $\bz^2$-graded $C^*$-algebra.
We show that the classical de Finetti theorem has a canonical noncommutative counterpart if we strengthen `exchangeability' (i.e., invariance of the joint distribution of the random variables under the action of the permutation group) to invariance under the action of the quantum permutation group. More precisely, for an infinite sequence of noncommutative random variables, we prove that invariance of their joint distribution under quantum permutations is equivalent to the fact that the random variables are identically distributed and free with respect to the conditional expectation onto their…
The extended de Finetti theorem characterizes exchangeable infinite random sequences as conditionally i.i.d. and shows that the apparently weaker distributional symmetry of spreadability is equivalent to exchangeability. Our main result is a noncommutative version of this theorem. In contrast to the classical result of Ryll-Nadzewski, exchangeability turns out to be stronger than spreadability for infinite noncommutative random sequences. Out of our investigations emerges noncommutative conditional independence in terms of a von Neumann algebraic structure closely related to Popa's notion of c…
We introduce a family of quantum semigroups and their natural coactions on noncommutative polynomials. We present three invariance conditions, associated with these coactions, for the joint distribution of sequences of selfadjoint noncommutative random variables. For one of the invariance conditions, we prove that the joint distribution of an infinite sequence of noncommutative random variables satisfies it is equivalent to the fact that the sequence of the random variables are identically distributed and boolean independent with respect to the conditional expectation onto its tail algebra. Th…
We construct several new spaces of quantum sequences and their quantum families of maps in sense of Sołtan. Then, we introduce noncommutative distributional symmetries associated with these quantum maps and study simple relations between them. We will focus on studying two kinds of noncommutative distributional symmetries: monotone spreadability and boolean spreadability. We provide an example of a spreadable sequence of random variables for which the usual unilateral shift is an unbounded map. As a result, it is natural to study bilateral sequences of random objects, which are indexed by inte…
We introduce symmetric states and quantum symmetric states on universal unital free product C*-algebras an arbitrary unital C*-algebra A with itself infinitely many times, as a generalization of the notions of exchangeable and quantum exchangeable random variables. We prove existence of conditional expectations onto tail algebras in various settings and we define a natural C*-subalgebra of the tail algebra, called the tail C*-algebra. Extending and building on the proof of the noncommutative de Finetti theorem of Koestler and Speicher, we prove a de Finetti type theorem that characterizes quan…
We extend the notion of quantum exchangeability, introduced by Köstler and Speicher in arXiv:0807.0677, to sequences (ρ_1,ρ_2,...c) of homomorphisms from an algebra C into a noncommutative probability space (A,ϕ), and prove a free de Finetti theorem: an infinite quantum exchangeable sequence (ρ_1,ρ_2,...c) is freely independent and identically distributed with respect to a conditional expectation. As a corollary we obtain a free analogue of the Hewitt Savage zero-one law. As in the classical case, the theorem fails for finite sequences. We give a characterization of finite quantum exchangeable…
We provide an operator algebraic proof of a classical theorem of Thoma which characterizes the extremal characters of the infinite symmetric group $\mathbb{S}_\infty$. Our methods are based on noncommutative conditional independence emerging from exchangeability and we reinterpret Thoma's theorem as a noncommutative de Finetti type result. Our approach is, in parts, inspired by Jones' subfactor theory and by Okounkov's spectral proof of Thoma's theorem, and we link them by inferring spectral properties from certain commuting squares.
We analyze general aspects of exchangeable quantum stochastic processes, as well as some concrete cases relevant for several applications to Quantum Physics and Probability. We establish that there is a one-to-one correspondence between quantum stochastic processes, either preserving or not the identity, and states on free product C*-algebras, unital or not unital respectively, where the exchangeable ones correspond precisely to the symmetric states. We also connect some algebraic properties of exchangeable processes, that is the fact that they satisfy the product state or the block-singleton …
We study the representation theory and enveloping $C^*$-algebras for Wick analogues of CAR and twisted CAR algebras. The realization of the $C^*$-algebras under consideration as algebras of continuous matrix-functions satisfying certain boundary conditions is given.
In this paper we show that the Cuntz algebra can be represented as a C*-crossed product by endomorphism of the canonical anticommutation relations (CAR) algebra, generated by the standard recursive fermion system.
The program relative to the investigation of quantum Markov states for spin chains based on Canonical Anticommutation Relations algebra is carried on. This analysis provides a further step for a satisfactory theory of quantum Markov processes.
Based on an embedding formula of the CAR algebra into the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal O}_{2^p}$, properties of the CAR algebra are studied in detail by restricting those of the Cuntz algebra. Various $\ast$-endomorphisms of the Cuntz algebra are explicitly constructed, and transcribed into those of the CAR algebra. In particular, a set of $\ast$-endomorphisms of the CAR algebra into its even subalgebra are constructed. According to branching formulae, which are obtained by composing representations and $\ast$-endomorphisms, it is shown that a KMS state of the CAR algebra is obtained through the a…
We consider compact matrix quantum groups whose fundamental corepresentation matrix has entries which are partial isometries with central support. We show that such quantum groups have a simple representation as semi-direct product quantum groups of a group dual quantum group by an action of a permutation group. This general result allows us to completely classify easy quantum groups with the above property by certain reflection groups. We give four applications of our result. First, there are uncountably many easy quantum groups. Second, there are non-easy quantum groups between the free orth…
Based on our previous work on the recursive fermion system in the Cuntz algebra, it is shown that a nonlinear transformation group of the CAR fermion algebra is induced from a $U(2^p)$ action on the Cuntz algebra ${\cal O}_{2^p}$ with an arbitrary positive integer $p$. In general, these nonlinear transformations are expressed in terms of finite polynomials in generators. Some Bogoliubov transformations are involved as special cases.
Embeddings of the CAR (canonical anticommutation relations) algebra of fermions into the Cuntz algebra ${\cal O}_2$ (or ${\cal O}_{2d}$ more generally) are presented by using recursive constructions. As a typical example, an embedding of CAR onto the U(1)-invariant subalgebra of ${\cal O}_2$ is constructed explicitly. Generalizing this construction to the case of ${\cal O}_{2^p}$, an embedding of CAR onto the U(1)-invariant subalgebra of ${\cal O}_{2^p}$ is obtained. Restricting a permutation representation of the Cuntz algebra, we obtain the Fock representation of CAR. We apply the results to…
Dynamical relationship between CAR algebras and determinantal point processes: point processes at finite temperature and stochastically positive KMS systems
We initiate the study of Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras, with a particular focus on existence and uniqueness questions. For homogeneous C*-algebras, these questions can be analysed systematically using the theory of fibre bundles. For group C*-algebras, while we are able to find Cartan subalgebras in C*-algebras of many connected Lie groups, there are classes of (discrete) groups, for instance non-abelian free groups, whose reduced group C*-algebras do not have any Cartan subalgebras. Moreover, we show that uniqueness of Cartan subalgebras usually fails for classifiable C*-algebras. However…
According to J. Feldman and C. Moore's well-known theorem on Cartan subalgebras, a variant of the group measure space construction gives an equivalence of categories between twisted countable standard measured equivalence relations and Cartan pairs, i.e. a von Neumann algebra (on a separable Hilbert space) together with a Cartan subalgebra. A. Kumjian gave a C*-algebraic analogue of this theorem in the early eighties. After a short survey of maximal abelian self-adjoint subalgebras in operator algebras, I present a natural definition of a Cartan subalgebra in a C*-algebra and an extension of K…
J. Renault has recently found a generalization of the caracterization of C*-diagonals obtained by A. Kumjian in the eighties, which in turn is a C*-algebraic version of J. Feldman and C. Moore's well known Theorem on Cartan subalgebras of von Neumann algebras. Here we propose to give a version of Renault's result in which the Cartan subalgebra is not necessarily commutative [sic]. Instead of describing a Cartan pair as a twisted groupoid C*-algebra we use N. Sieben's notion of Fell bundles over inverse semigroups which we believe should be thought of as "twisted etale groupoids with noncommuta…
Let $G_0=K\ltimes\p$ be the Cartan motion groups. Under some assumption on $G_0,$ we describe the $C^*$-algebra $C^*(G_0)$ of $G_0$ in terms of operator fields.
In this short note we classify the Cartan subalgebras in all von Neumann algebras associated with graph product groups and their free ergodic measure preserving actions on probability spaces.
We compare the K-theory and K-homology of the well known CAR algebra. While the $K_0$ group is infinitely generated, we shows that it pairs identically to zero with even Fredholm modules over the algebra. We show further that in fact the even K-homology is trivial, while the odd K-homology is very large. These results give some insight into the K-homology of AF-algebras.
