Steady state plastic flows have been compared to developed turbulence because the two phenomena share the inherent complexity of particle trajectories, the scale free spatial patterns and the power law statistics of fluctuations. The origin of the apparently chaotic and at the same time highly correlated microscopic response in plasticity remains hidden behind conventional engineering models which are based on smooth fitting functions. To regain access to fluctuations, we study in this paper a minimal mesoscopic model whose goal is to elucidate the origin of scale free behavior in plasticity. We limit our description to fcc type crystals and leave out both temperature and rate effects. We provide simple illustrations of the fact that complexity in rate independent athermal plastic flows is due to marginal stability of the underlying elastic system. Our conclusions are based on a reduction of an over-damped visco-elasticity problem for a system with a rugged elastic energy landscape to an integer valued automaton. We start with an overdamped one dimensional model and show that it reproduces the main macroscopic phenomenology of rate independent plastic behavior but falls short of generating self similar structure of fluctuations. We then provide evidence that a two dimensional model is already adequate for describing power law statistics of avalanches and fractal character of dislocation patterning. In addition to capturing experimentally measured critical exponents, the proposed minimal model shows finite size scaling collapse and generates realistic shape functions in the scaling laws.
Crystal plasticity is mediated through dislocations, which form knotted configurations in a complex energy landscape. Once they disentangle and move, they may also be impeded by permanent obstacles with finite energy barriers or frustrating long-range interactions. The outcome of such complexity is the emergence of dislocation avalanches as the basic mechanism of plastic flow in solids at the nanoscale. While the deformation behavior of bulk materials appears smooth, a predictive model should clearly be based upon the character of these dislocation avalanches and their associated strain bursts…
Plasticity in soft amorphous materials typically involves collective deformation patterns that emerge upon intense shearing. The microscopic basis of amorphous plasticity has been commonly established through the notion of "Eshelby"-type events, localized abrupt rearrangements that induce flow in the surrounding material via non-local elastic-type interactions. This universal mechanism in flowing disordered solids has been proposed despite their diversity in terms of scales, microscopic constituents, or interactions. However, we argue that the presence of frictional interactions in granular so…
The theory of dislocation mediated plastic flow proposed by Langer, Bouchbinder, and Lookman is applied to compute the stress-strain curve of aluminum and aluminum alloys over a wide range of temperatures and strain rates. The comparison with experiment shows excellent agreement.
Upon mechanical loading, granular materials yield and undergo plastic deformation. The nature of plastic deformation is essential for the development of the macroscopic constitutive models and the understanding of shear band formation. However, we still do not fully understand the microscopic nature of plastic deformation in disordered granular materials. Here we used synchrotron X-ray tomography technique to track the structural evolutions of three-dimensional granular materials under shear. We establish that highly distorted coplanar tetrahedra are the structural defects responsible for micr…
This paper verifies two laws for plastic flows of face-centered cubic crystals that deform at constant strain rates and fixed ambient temperatures. The first law relates steady-state flow stress to ambient temperature and strain rate. The second law requires an increase of configurational entropy towards a maximum reached in the steady state. The large scale least squares analysis is provided which allows the physics-based parameters of thermodynamic dislocation theory to be identified in accordance with these laws.
We report electron microscopy observations of the surface plastic flow in polishing of rough metal surfaces with a controlled spherical asperity structure. We show that asperity--abrasive sliding contacts exhibit viscous behavior, where the material flows in the form of thin fluid-like layers. Subsequent bridging of these layers among neighboring asperities result in progressive surface smoothening. Our study provides new phenomenological insights into the long-debated mechanism of polishing. The observations are of broad relevance in tribology and materials processing.
We present experimental and theoretical results for the surface topography of a plastically deformed metallic (aluminum) block. When a hard spherical body (here a steel-, silica glass- or silicon nitride ball) with a smooth surface is indented in a metal block with a nominally flat, but still rough, surface, a spherical-cup-like indentation result due to plastic flow. The surface roughness in the indented region is, however, not entirely flattened. The long wavelength (macroasperity) content of the roughness result from the roughness on the original (aluminum) surface, but now plastically defo…
The mode I crack tip asymptotic response of a solid characterised by strain gradient plasticity is investigated. It is found that elastic strains dominate plastic strains near the crack tip, and thus the Cauchy stress and the strain state are given asymptotically by the elastic K-field. This crack tip elastic zone is embedded within an annular elasto-plastic zone. This feature is predicted by both a crack tip asymptotic analysis and a finite element computation. When small scale yielding applies, three distinct regimes exist: an outer elastic K field, an intermediate elasto-plastic field, and …
Dislocations are the carriers of plasticity in crystalline materials. Their collective interaction behavior is dependent on the strain rate and sample size. In small specimens, details of the nucleation process are of particular importance. In the present work, discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) simulations are performed to investigate the dominant yielding mechanisms in single crystalline copper pillars with diameters ranging from 100 to 800 nm. Based on our simulations with different strain rates and sample size, we observe a transition of the relevant nucleation mechanism from "dislocation…
This work introduces a model for large-strain, geometrically nonlinear elasto-plastic dynamics in single crystals. The key feature of our model is that the plastic dynamics are entirely driven by the movement of dislocations, that is, $1$-dimensional topological defects in the crystal lattice. It is well known that glide motion of dislocations is the dominant microscopic mechanism for plastic deformation in many crystalline materials, most notably in metals. We propose a novel geometric language, built on the concepts of space-time "slip trajectories" and the "crystal scaffold" to describe the…
We propose an Eulerian thermodynamically compatible model for ideal plasticity of crystalline solids treated as a material flow through an adjustable crystal lattice space. The model is based on the additive splitting of the velocity gradient into the crystal lattice part and the plastic part. The approach extends a Gibbs-potential-based formulation developed by Rajagopal and Srinivasa for obtaining the response functions for elasto-visco-plastic crystals. The framework makes constitutive assumptions for two scalar functions: the Gibbs potential and the rate of dissipation. The constitutive eq…
A combination of high strength and reasonable ductility has been achieved in a copper-1.7 at.%titanium alloy deformed by high-pressure torsion. Grain refinement and a spinodal microstructure provided a hardness of 254 +/- 2 HV , yield strength of 800 MPa and elongation of 10%. The spinodal structure persisted during isothermal ageing, further increasing the yield strength to 890MPa while retaining an elongation of 7%. This work demonstrates the potential for spinodal microstructures to overcome the difficulties in retaining ductility in ultra-fine grained or nanocrystalline alloys, especially …
Built on the tenets of rational thermodynamics, this article proposes a theory of strain gradient thermo-visco-plasticity for isotropic polycrystalline materials under high strain rates. The effect of micro-inertia, which arises due to dynamically evolving microstructural defects, is brought to bear on the macro-continuum through a micro-force balance. Constitutive modelling of dissipative micro-stresses incorporates relaxation time parameters to account for the time lags of the dissipative fluxes in attaining a steady state. Augmentation of the micro-force balance with constitutive relations …
In this paper we present a new general framework for anisotropic elastoplasticity at large strains. The new framework presents the following characteristics: (1) It is valid for non-moderate large strains, (2) it is valid for both elastic and plastic anisotropy, (3) its description in rate form is parallel to that of the infinitesimal formulation, (4) it is compatible with the multiplicative decomposition, (5) results in a similar framework in any stress-strain work-conjugate pair, (6) it is consistent with the principle of maximum plastic dissipation and (7) does not impose any restriction on…
We show that nonlinear continuum elasticity can be effective in modeling plastic flows in crystals if it is viewed as Landau theory with an infinite number of equivalent energy wells whose configuration is dictated by the symmetry group GL(3,Z). Quasi-static loading can be then handled by athermal dynamics, while lattice based discretization can play the role of regularization. As a proof of principle, we study in this Letter dislocation nucleation in a homogeneously sheared 2D crystal and show that the global tensorial invariance of the elastic energy foments the development of complexity in …
We present a dislocation density-based strain hardening model for single crystal copper through a systematic coarse-graining analysis of more than 200 discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) simulations of plastic deformation under uniaxial tension. The proposed constitutive model has two components: a generalized Taylor relation connecting resolved shear stresses to dislocation densities on individual slip systems, and a generalized Kocks-Mecking model for dislocation multiplication. The DDD data strongly suggests a logarithmic dependence of flow stress on the plastic shear strain rate on each sl…
We study nonequilibrium roughening during compressive plastic flow of initially flat Cu$_{50}$Zr$_{50}$ metallic glass using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Roughness emerges at atomically flat interfaces beyond the yield point of the glass. A self-affine rough topography is imprinted at yield and is reinforced during subsequent deformation. The imprinted topographies have Hurst exponents that decrease with increasing strain-rate and temperature. After yield, the root-mean-square roughness amplitude grows as the square-root of the applied strain with a prefactor that also drops wit…
The deformation and flow of disordered solids, such as metallic glasses and concentrated emulsions, involves swift localized rearrangements of particles that induce a long-range deformation field. To describe these heterogeneous processes, elastoplastic models handle the material as a collection of 'mesoscopic' blocks alternating between an elastic behavior and plastic relaxation, when they are too loaded. Plastic relaxation events redistribute stresses in the system in a very anisotropic way. We review not only the physical insight provided by these models into practical issues such as strain…
In this study, we use discrete dislocation dynamics (DDD) simulation to investigate the effect of heterogeneous dislocation density on the transition between quasi-elastic deformation and plastic flow in face-centered cubic single crystals. By analyzing the stress-strain curves of samples with an initial, axial dislocation density gradient, we arrive at the following conclusions: (i) in the regime of quasi-elastic deformation before the onset of plastic flow, the effective elastic modulus of the simulated samples falls significantly below the value for a dislocation-free crystal. This modulus …
Study of the plastic flow and strain-induced phase transformations (PTs) under high pressure with diamond anvils is important for material and geophysics. We introduce rough diamond anvils and apply them to Zr, which drastically change the plastic flow, microstructure, and PTs. Multiple steady microstructures independent of pressure, plastic strain, and strain path are reached. Maximum friction equal to the yield strength in shear is achieved. This allows determination of the pressure-dependence of the yield strength and proves that omega-Zr behaves like perfectly plastic, isotropic, and strai…
Ice plasticity has been thoroughly studied, owing to its importance in glaciers and ice sheets dynamics. In particular, its anisotropy (easy basal slip) has been suspected for a long time, then fully characterized 40 years ago. More recently emerged the interest of ice as a model material to study some fundamental aspects of crystalline plasticity. An example is the nature of plastic fluctuations and collective dislocation dynamics. 20 years ago, acoustic emission measurements performed during the deformation of ice single crystals revealed that plastic flow proceeds through intermittent dislo…
This work presents a new modeling approach to macroscopic, polycrystalline elasto-plasticity starting from first principles and a few well-defined structural assumptions, incorporating the mildly rate-dependent (viscous) nature of plastic flow and the microscopic origins of plastic deformations. For the global dynamics, we start from a two-stage time-stepping scheme, expressing the fact that in most real materials plastic flow is much slower than elastic deformations, and then perform a detailed analysis of the slow-loading limit passage. In this limit, a rate-independent evolution can be expe…
Intermetallic phases can significantly improve the creep resistance of magnesium alloys, extending their use to higher temperatures. However, little is known about the deformation behaviour of these phases at application temperatures, which are commonly below their macroscopic brittle-to-ductile-transition temperature. In this study, we therefore investigate the activation of different slip systems of the CaMg$_2$ phase and the occurrence of serrated yielding in the temperature range from 50$^\circ$C to 250$^\circ$C. A decreasing amount of serrated flow with increasing temperature suggests tha…
Metallic glasses are known to have a remarkably robust yield strength, admitting Weibull moduli as high as for crystalline engineering alloys. However, their post-yielding behavior is strongly varying, with large scatter in both flow stress levels and strains at failure. Using x-ray tomography we reveal for the first time how a strain-dependent internal evolution of shear-band cavities underlies this unpredictable post yielding response. We demonstrate how macroscopic strain-softening coincides with the first detection of internal shear-band cavitation. Cavity growth during plastic flow is fou…
Current challenges for preseismic electromagnetic emissions: shedding light from micro-scale plastic flow, granular packings, phase transitions and self-affinity notion of fracture process
We use a continuous mesoscopic model to address the yielding properties of plastic composites, formed by a host material and inclusions with different elastic and/or plastic properties. We investigate the flow properties of the composed material under a uniform externally applied deviatoric stress. We show that due to the heterogeneities induced by the inclusions, a scalar modeling in terms of a single deviatoric strain of the same symmetry than the externally applied deformation gives inaccurate results. A realistic modeling must include all possible shear deformations. Implementing this mode…
