We report a systematic study of the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method on two different geometries: the sphere and the cylinder. We provide convergence benchmarks based on model Hamiltonians known to possess exact zero-energy ground states, as well as an analysis of the number of sweeps and basis elements that need to be kept in order to achieve the desired accuracy. The ground state energies of the Coulomb Hamiltonian at $ν=1/3$ and $ν=5/2$ filling are extracted and compared with the results obtained by previous DMRG implementations in the literature. A remarkably rapid convergence in the cylinder geometry is noted and suggests that this boundary condition is particularly suited for the application of the DMRG method to the FQHE.
We examine the effect of interactions between the electrons on the conductances of some systems of quantum wires with different geometries. The systems include a wire with a stub in the middle, a wire containing a ring which can enclose a magnetic flux, and a system of four wires which are connected in the middle through a fifth wire. Each of the wires is taken to be a weakly interacting Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid, and scattering matrices are introduced at all the junctions. Using a renormalization group method developed recently for studying the flow of scattering matrices for interacting syst…
While the simplest quantum Hall plateaus, such as the $ν= 1/3$ state in GaAs, can be conveniently analyzed by assuming only a single active Landau level participates, for many phases the spin, valley, bilayer, subband, or higher Landau level indices play an important role. These `multi-component' problems are difficult to study using exact diagonalization because each component increases the difficulty exponentially. An important example is the plateau at $ν= 5/2$, where scattering into higher Landau levels chooses between the competing non-Abelian Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states. We address…
The edge states in the fractional quantum Hall systems at filling factor $ν=1/3$ are studied by the density matrix renormalization group method. It is shown that the density oscillation induced by the local boundary condition at the edge is characterized by the wave number of the minimum magnetoroton excitation, and this structure is partially reconstructed with the change in the confinement potential shape. In particular, the $ν=1$ counterpropagating edge channel appears with the change in the chemical potential, which is consistent with recent experiments on heat transport. The stability of …
We use the dynamical structure factors of the quantum Hall states at $ν=1/3$ and $ν=1/2$ in the lowest Landau level to study their excitation spectrum. Using the density matrix renormalization group in combination with the time-dependent variational principle on an infinite cylinder geometry, we extract the low energy properties. At $ν=1/3$, a sharp magnetoroton mode and the two-roton continuum are present and the finite-size effects can be understood using the fractional charge of the quasi-particle. At $ν=1/2$, we find low energy modes with linear dispersion and the static structure factor $…
Topological quantum states have been proposed and investigated on two-dimensional flat surfaces or lattices with different geometries like the plane, cylinder and torus. Here, we study quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) or Chern insulator (CI) states on two-dimensional singular surfaces (such as conical and helicoid-like surfaces). Such singular geometries can be constructed based on the disk geometry and a defined unit sector with $n$-fold rotational symmetry. The singular geometry induces novel and intriguing features of CI/QAH states, such as in-gap and in-band core states, charge fractionalizati…
We study $N$-component interacting particles (hardcore bosons and fermions) loaded in topological lattice models with SU$(N)$-invariant interactions based on density matrix renormalization group method. By tuning the interplay of interspecies and intraspecies interactions, we demonstrate that a class of SU$(N)$ fractional quantum Hall states can emerge at fractional filling factors $ν=N/(N+1)$ for bosons ($ν=N/(2N+1)$ for fermions) in the lowest Chern band, characterized by the nontrivial fractional Hall responses and the fractional charge pumping. Moreover, we establish a topological characte…
We study the many-body instabilities of correlated electrons on the half-filled honeycomb lattice with enhanced exchange coupling. The system is described by an extended Hubbard model including the next-nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion ($V_2$) and the nearest-neighbor exchange interaction ($J$). We use the truncated unity functional renormalization group approach to determine a schematic ground-state phase diagram with higher resolution in the parameter space of $V_2$ and $J$. In the absence of the on-site repulsion and presence of sizable next-nearest-neighbor repulsion and enhanced nearest…
Twistronics heterostructures provide a novel route to control the electronic single particle velocity and thereby to engineer strong effective interactions. Here we show that the reverse may also hold, i.e. that these interactions strongly renormalize the band structure. We demonstrate this mechanism for mirror-symmetric magic angle twisted trilayer graphene at charge neutrality and in the vicinity of a phase transition which can be described by an Ising Gross-Neveu critical point corresponding, e.g., to the onset of valley Hall or Hall order. While the non-interacting model displays massless …
We study the fully gapped chiral Mott insulator (CMI) of frustrated Bose-Hubbard models on ladders and two-dimensional lattices by perturbative strong-coupling analysis and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). First we show the existence of a low-lying exciton state on all geometries carrying the correct quantum numbers responsible for the condensation of excitons and formation of the CMI in the intermediate interaction regime. Then we perform systematic DMRG simulations on several two-leg ladder systems with $π$-flux and carefully characterize the two quantum phase transitions. We dis…
We theoretically investigate emergent quantum phases in the thin film geometries of the pyrochore iridates, where a number of exotic quantum ground states are proposed to occur in bulk materials as a result of the interplay between electron correlation and strong spin-orbit coupling. The fate of these bulk phases as well as novel quantum states that may arise only in the thin film platforms, are studied via a theoretical model that allows layer-dependent magnetic structures. It is found that the magnetic order develop in inhomogeneous fashions in the thin film geometries. This leads to a varie…
The long-thought charge Kondo effects have recently been experimentally realized in the quantum Hall regime. This experiment, supported by numerics, exemplifies the realization of two-channel Kondo state, a non-Fermi Liquid, and its crossover to the one-channel counterpart, a Fermi liquid. Scaling up such a platform, we find a hierarchy of non-Fermi Liquids and their tunable crossovers based on a renormalization group analysis. Utilizing results from a conformal field theory, we further examine the universal conductances of this strongly correlated system and their finite temperature scaling, …
We study the quantum phases driven by interaction in a semimetal with a quadratic band touching at the Fermi level. By combining the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG), analytical power expanded Gibbs potential method, and the weak coupling renormalization group, we study a spinless fermion system on a checkerboard lattice at half-filling, which has a quadratic band touching in the absence of interaction. In the presence of strong nearest-neighbor ($V_1$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($V_2$) interactions, we identify a site nematic insulator phase, a stripe insulator phase, and a phase s…
We consider the interacting, spin conserving, extended Kane-Mele-Hubbard model, and we rigorously establish the exact quantization of the edge spin conductance and the validity of the Helical Luttinger liquid relations for Drude weights and susceptibilities. Our analysis fully takes into account lattice effects, typically neglected in the Helical Luttinger model approximation, which play an essential role for universality. The analysis is based on exact renormalization group methods and on a combination of lattice and emergent Ward identities, which allow to relate the emergent chiral anomaly …
While the internal structure of Abelian topological order is well understood, how to characterize the non-Abelian topological order is an outstanding issue. We propose a distinctive scheme based on the many-body Chern number matrix to characterize non-Abelian multicomponent fractional quantum Hall states. As a concrete example, we study the many-body ground state of two-component bosons at the filling faction $ν=4/3$ in topological flat band models. Utilizing density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization calculations, we demonstrate the emergence of non-Abelian spin-singlet fr…
We study the edge transport properties of $2d$ interacting Hall systems, displaying single-mode chiral edge currents. For this class of many-body lattice models, including for instance the interacting Haldane model, we prove the quantization of the edge charge conductance and the bulk-edge correspondence. Instead, the edge Drude weight and the edge susceptibility are interaction-dependent; nevertheless, they satisfy exact universal scaling relations, in agreement with the chiral Luttinger liquid theory. Moreover, charge and spin excitations differ in their velocities, giving rise to the spin-c…
We study the phase transitions of bosonic $ν=1/2$ fractional quantum Hall (FQH) effect in different topological lattice models under the interplay of onsite periodic potential and Hubbard repulsion. Through exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group methods, we demonstrate that the many-body ground state undergoes a continuous phase transition between bosonic FQH liquid and a trivial (Mott) insulator induced by the periodic potential, characterized by the smooth crossover of energy and entanglement entropy. When the Hubbard repulsion decreases, we claim that this bosonic FQ…

Exact formulas of diagonal conductivity $σ_{xx}$ and Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ are derived from the Kubo formula in hybridized two-orbital systems with arbitrary band dispersions. On the basis of the theoretical framework for the Fermi liquid based on these formulas, the ground-state properties of the periodic Anderson model with electron correlation and weak impurity scattering are studied on the square lattice. It is shown that imbalance of the mass-renormalization factors in $σ_{xx}$ and $σ_{xy}$ causes remarkable increase in the valence-fluctuation regime as the f level increases while th…
We study a bosonic model with correlated hopping on a honeycomb lattice, and show that its ground state is a bosonic integer quantum Hall (BIQH) phase, a prominent example of a symmetry protected topological (SPT) phase. By using the infinite density matrix renormalization group method, we establish the existence of the BIQH phase by providing clear numerical evidence: (i) a quantized Hall conductance with $|σ_{xy}|= 2$ (ii) two counter propagating gapless edge modes. Our simple model is an example of a novel class of systems that can stabilize SPT phases protected by a continuous symmetry on …
Synthetic quantum Hall bilayer (SQHB), realized by optically driven monolayer graphene in the quantum Hall regime, provides a flexible platform for engineering quantum Hall phases as discussed in [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 247403]. The coherent driving which couples two Landau levels mimicks an effective tunneling between synthetic layers. The tunneling strength, the effective Zeeman coupling, and two-body interaction matrix elements are tunable by varying the driving frequency and the driving strength. Using infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) techniques combined with exact diag…
