We present the "classical" Nielsen-Olesen vortex solution on a warped five dimensional space time, where we solved the effective four-dimensional equations from the five-dimensional equations together with the junction and boundary conditions. Four dimensional cosmic strings show some serious problems concerning the mechanism of string smoothing related to the string mass per unit length, $Gμ\leq 10^{-6}$. Moreover, there is no observational evidence of axially symmetric lensing effect caused by cosmic strings. Also super-massive cosmic strings ($Gμ\gtrsim 1$), predicted by superstring theory, possess some problems. They are studied because the universe may have undergone phase transitions at scales much higher than the GUT scale. But $Gμ\gtrsim 1$ is far above observational bounds, so one needs an inflationary scenario to smooth them out. Further, it is believed that these super-massive strings could never have extended to macroscopic size. Brane-world models could overcome these problems. $Gμ$ could be warped down to GUT scale, even if its value was at the Planck scale.
In our warped cosmic string model, where the string mass per unit length in the bulk can be of order of the Planck scale, we find that the four dimensional brane space time is exponential warped down. Moreover, asymptotically the induced four dimensional space time doesn't show conical behavior. So there is no angle deficit compared to its value in the bulk and the space time seems to be un-physical, at least under fairly weak assumptions on the stress-energy tensor and without a positive brane tension. The results are confirmed by numerical solutions of the field equations.
Time-dependent soliton solutions are explicitly derived in a five-dimensional theory endowed with one (warped) extra-dimension. Some of the obtained geometries, everywhere well defined and technically regular, smoothly interpolate between two five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space-times for fixed value of the conformal time coordinate. Time dependent solutions containing both topological and non-topological sectors are also obtained. Supplementary degrees of freedom can be also included and, in this case, the resulting multi-soliton solutions may describe time-dependent kink-antikink systems.
We present a cosmic string on a warped five dimensional space time in Einstein-Yang-Mills theory. Four-dimensional cosmic strings show some serious problems concerning the mechanism of string smoothing related to the string mass per unit length, $Gμ\approx 10^{-6}$. A warped cosmic string could overcome this problem and also the superstring requirement that $Gμ$ must be of order 1, which is far above observational bounds. Also the absence of observational evidence of axially symmetric lensing effect caused by cosmic strings could be explained by the warped cosmic string model we present: the a…
We discuss the properties of semilocal strings minimally coupled to gravity. Semilocal strings are solutions of the bosonic sector of the Standard Model in the limit $\sin^2θ_W=1$ (where $θ_W$ is the Weinberg angle) and correspond to embedded Abelian-Higgs strings for a particular choice of the scalar doublet. We focus on the limit where the gauge boson mass is equal to the Higgs boson mass such that the solutions fulfill the Bogomolnyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) bound.
The static cylindrically symmetric solutions of the gravitating Abelian Higgs model form a two parameter family. In this paper we give a complete classification of the string-like solutions of this system. We show that the parameter plane is composed of two different regions with the following characteristics: One region contains the standard asymptotically conic cosmic string solutions together with a second kind of solutions with Melvin-like asymptotic behavior. The other region contains two types of solutions with bounded radial extension. The border between the two regions is the curve of …
We study field theoretical models for cosmic (p,q)-superstrings in a curved space-time. We discuss both string solutions, i.e. solutions with a conical deficit, but also so-called Melvin solutions, which have a completely different asymptotic behaviour. We show that globally regular gravitating (p,q)-strings exist only in a finite domain of the parameter space and study the dependence of the domain of existence on the parameters in the model. We find that due to the interaction between strings, the parameter range where string solution exist is wider than for non-interacting strings.
We construct a new class of charged rotating black string solutions coupled to a nonlinear electromagnetic field in the background of anti-de Sitter spaces. We consider two types of nonlinear electromagnetic field namely, logarithmic and exponential forms. We investigate the geometric effects of nonlinearity parameter and find that for large $r$, these solutions recover the rotating back string solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory. We calculate the conserved and thermodynamic quantities of the rotating black string. We also analyze thermodynamics of the spacetime and verify the validity of the…
The configuration of typical highly excited (M >> M_s ~ (alpha')^{-1/2}) string states is considered as the string coupling g is adiabatically increased. The size distribution of very massive single string states is studied and the mass shift, due to long-range gravitational, dilatonic and axionic attraction, is estimated. By combining the two effects, in any number of spatial dimensions d, the most probable size of a string state becomes of order l_s = sqrt{2 alpha'} when g^2 M / M_s ~ 1. Depending on the dimension d, the transition between a random-walk-size string state (for low g) and a co…
Cosmic strings are considered in two types of gauged sigma models, which generalize the gravitating Abelian Higgs model. The two models differ by whether the U(1) kinetic term is of the Maxwell or Chern-Simons form. We obtain the self-duality conditions for a general two-dimensional target space defined in terms of field dependent "dielectric functions". In particular, we analyze analytically and numerically the equations for the case of O(3) models (two-sphere as target space), and find cosmic string solutions of several kinds as well as gravitating vortices. We classify the solutions by thei…
In the modified measure formulation the string tension appear as an additional dynamical degree of freedom and these tensions are not universal, but rather each string generates its own tension, which can have a different value for each string. We consider new background field that can couple to these strings, the tension scalar is capable of changing locally along the world sheet the value of the tension of the extended object. When many types of strings probing the same region of space are considered this tension scalar is constrained by the requirement of quantum conformal invariance. For t…
In the AdS/CFT correspondence, single trace operators of large-$N$ gauge theories at large spin $J$ can be described by classical spinning strings, giving a geometric and classical description of their spectrum at strong coupling. We observe that in AdS$_3$ these strings have significant gravitational back-reaction at sufficiently large spin, since the gravitational force does not decay at long distances. We construct solutions for folded spinning strings coupled to gravity in AdS$_3$ and compute their spectrum, corresponding to the leading Regge trajectory of Virasroro primary operators. Thes…
We construct gravitating superconducting string solutions of the U(1)_{local} x U(1)_{global} model solving the coupled system of Einstein and matter field equations numerically. We study the properties of these solutions in dependence on the ratio between the symmetry breaking scale and the Planck mass. Using the macroscopic stability conditions formulated by Carter, we observe that the coupling to gravity allows for a new stable region that is not present in the flat space-time limit. We match the asymptotic metric to the Kasner metric and show that the relations between the Kasner coefficie…
We continue our study of codimension two solutions of warped space-time varying compactifications of string theory. In this letter we discuss a non-supersymmetric solution of the classical type IIB string theory with de Sitter gravity on a codimension two uncompactified part of spacetime. A non-zero positive value of the cosmological constant is induced by the presence of non-trivial stringy moduli, such as the axion-dilaton system for the type IIB string theory. Furthermore, the naked singularity of the codimension two solution is resolved by the presence of a small but non-zero cosmological …
The classical Einstein--Maxwell field equations admit static horizonless wormhole solutions with only a circular cosmic string singularity. We show how to extend these static solutions to exact rotating asymptotically flat solutions. For a suitable range of parameter values, these solutions describe charged or neutral rotating closed cosmic strings, with a perimeter of the order of their Schwarzschild radius.
We assume that a self-gravitating thin string can be locally described by what we shall call a smoothed cone. If we impose a specific constraint on the model of the string, then its central line obeys the Nambu-Goto equations. If no constraint is added, then the worldsheet of the central line is a totally geodesic surface.
We consider warped compactifications that solve the 10 dimensional supergravity equations of motion at a point, stabilize the position of a D3-brane world, and admit a warp factor that violates Lorentz invariance along the brane. This gives a string embedding of ``asymmetrically warped'' models which we use to calculate stringy (α') corrections to standard model dispersion relations, paying attention to the maximum speeds for different particles. We find, from the dispersion relations, limits on gravitational Lorentz violation in these models, improving on current limits on the speed of gravit…
A class of five-dimensional warped solutions is presented. The geometry is everywhere regular and tends to five-dimensional anti-de Sitter space for large absolute values of the bulk coordinate. The physical features of the solutions change depending on the value of an integer parameter. In particular, a set of solutions describes generalized gravitating kinks where the scalar field interpolates between two different minima of the potential. The other category of solutions describes instead gravitating defects where the scalar profile is always finite and reaches the same constant asymptote bo…
We explore the generic motion of cosmic (super)strings when the internal compact dimensions are warped, using the Klebanov-Strassler solution as a prototypical throat geometry. We find that there is no dynamical mechanism which localises the string at the tip of the throat, but rather that the motion seems to explore both internal and external degrees of freedom democratically. This indicates that cosmic (super)strings formed by inflationary brane-antibrane annihilation will have sufficient internal motion for the gravitational wave signals from the string network to be suppressed relative to …
It is pointed out that in the warped string compactification, motion of anti-D-branes near the bottom of a throat behaves like dark matter. Several scenarios for production of the dark matter are suggested, including one based on the D/anti-D interaction at the late stage of D/anti-D inflation.
In this paper we study regular cosmic string solutions of the non-Abelian Higgs model coupled with the Einstein gravity. In order to do that, we constructed a set of coupled differential ordinary equation. Because there is no closed solution for this set of equations, we solve it numerically. The solutions that we are interested in asymptote to a flat space-time with a planar angle deficit. This model under consideration present two bosonic sectors, besides the non-Abelian gauge one, coupled minimally with the gravitational fields. The two bosonic sectors may present a direct coupling, which p…
We show that when considering a scalar field scattering in a gravitating cosmic string spacetime, the standard partial-wave approach's scattering amplitude is singular. In order to avoid the divergence caused by the spacetime asymptotically conical structure, we propose a modification of the asymptotic ansatz in the partial-wave formalism and find the corrections in the phase-shift and total scattering cross-section. We also developed a toy model for the spacetime metric of a cosmic string and showed how local interaction with the vortex gauge field affects the scalar field total cross-section…
We assume that a self-gravitating string is locally described by a thin tube of matter represented by a ``smoothed conical metric''. If we impose a specific constraint on the model of string then its central line obeys the Nambu-Goto dynamics in the limit where the radius of the tube tends to zero. If no constraint is added then the world sheet of the central line is totally geodesic.
When we consider five-dimensional warped Taub-NUT/Bolt AdS black string with minimally coupled massive scalar field, we calculate entropy by using the brick wall method. It is found that they are proportional to being quadratically divergent in a cutoff parameter. In particular, we show that the entropy of warped Taub-NUT AdS black string holds for an area law in the bulk as well as on the brane. Furthermore, when the negative cosmological constant is treated as thermodynamic pressure, we calculate the thermodynamic quantities and investigate their extended thermodynamic properties. Interestin…
Static solutions with a bulk dilaton are derived in the context of six dimensional warped compactification. In the string frame, exponentially decreasing warp factors are identified with critical points of the low energy $β$-functions truncated at a given order in the string tension corrections. The stability of the critical points is discussed in the case of the first string tension correction. The singularity properties of the obtained solutions are analyzed and illustrative numerical examples are provided.
Comparison of the oscillatory behavior of a gravitating infinite Nambu-Goto string and a test string is investigated using the general relativistic gauge invariant perturbation technique with two infinitesimal parameters on a flat spacetime background. Due to the existence of the pp-wave exact solution, we see that the conclusion that the dynamical degree of freedom of an infinite Nambu-Goto string is completely determined by that of gravitational waves, which was reached in our previous works [K. Nakamura, A. Ishibashi and H. Ishihara, Phys. Rev. D{\bf 62} (2002), 101502(R); K. Nakamura and H…
Warped configurations admitting pairs of gravitating defects are analyzed. After devising a general method for the construction of multidefects, specific examples are presented in the case of higher-dimensional Einstein-Hilbert gravity. The obtained profiles describe diverse physical situations such as (topological) kink-antikink systems, pairs of non-topological solitons and bound configurations of a kink and of a non-topological soliton. In all the mentioned cases the geometry is always well behaved (all relevant curvature invariants are regular) and tends to five-dimensional anti-de Sitter …
We present explicit analytic form of general warped solutions of the string inspired dilaton gravity system with bulk cosmological constant in 5 dimensions. The general solution allows for either nonvanishing effective 4-dimensional cosmological constant or the nontrivial 4-dimensional dilaton but not both.
We examine the dynamics of a self-gravitating string in the scalar-tensor theories of gravitation by considering a thin tube of matter to describe it. For a class of solutions, we obtain in the generic case that the extrinsic curvature of the world sheet of the central line is null in the limit where the radius of the string tends to zero. However, if we impose a specific constraint on the behaviour of the solution then we find that only the mean curvature of the world sheet of the central line vanishes which is just the Nambu-Goto dynamics. This analysis can include the massless dilatonic the…
We study field theoretical models for cosmic strings with flat directions in curved space-time. More precisely, we consider minimal models with semilocal, axionic and tachyonic strings, respectively. In flat space-time, the string solutions of these models have a flat direction, i.e., a uniparametric family of configurations with the same energy exists which is associated to a zero mode. We prove that the zero mode survives coupling to gravity, and study the role of the flat direction when coupling the strings to gravity. Even though the total energy of the solution is the same, and thus the g…
We study the evolution of relic D3-branes after the D3/\bd-brane inflation in string warped compactification. The motion of D3-branes can be frozen under certain condition during the radiation/matter domination. These D3-branes can not be released until the D3/\bd-branes potential energy becomes dominated at late time. Subsequently they will move towards to \bd-branes, which play the role of uplifting AdS minimum to dS minimum, near the apex of throats. The annihilation of D3/\bd-branes leads to the disappearance of dS vacua. This process may be regarded as a rapid decay channel of present dS …
The coupled Einstein-Yang-Mills equations on a time dependent axially symmetric spacetime are investigated, without a priori any conditions on the gauge field. There is numerical evidence for the existence of a regular solution with the desired asymptotic features. Just as in the supermassive abelian counterpart model, the formation of a singularity at finite distance of the core of the string depends critically on a parameter of the model, i.e., the constant value of one of the magnetic components of the YM potentials. The multiple-scale method could supply decisive answers concerning the sta…
We study a class of higher dimensional warped Einstein spacetimes with one extra dimension. These were originally identified by Brinkmann as those Einstein spacetimes that can be mapped conformally on other Einstein spacetimes, and have subsequently appeared in various contexts to describe, e.g., different braneworld models or warped black strings. After clarifying the relation between the general Brinkmann metric and other more specific coordinate systems, we analyze the algebraic type of the Weyl tensor of the solutions. In particular, we describe the relation between Weyl aligned null direc…
At first glance, it seems possible to construct in general relativity theory causality violating solutions. The most striking one is the Gott spacetime. Two cosmic strings, approaching each other with high velocity, could produce closed timelike curves. It was quickly recognized that this solution violates physical boundary conditions. The effective one particle generator becomes hyperbolic, so the center of mass is tachyonic. On a 5-dimensional warped spacetime, it seems possible to get an elliptic generator, so no obstruction is encountered and the velocity of the center of mass of the effec…
We compute the quantum string entropy S_s(m,j) of the microscopic string states of mass m and spin j in two physically relevant backgrounds: Kerr (rotating) black holes and de Sitter (dS) space-time. We find a new formula for the quantum gravitational entropy S_{sem} (M, J), as a function of the usual Bekenstein-Hawking entropy S_{sem}^(0)(M, J). We compute the quantum string emission by a black hole in de Sitter space-time (bhdS). In all these cases: (i) strings with the highest spin, and (ii) in dS space-time, (iii) quantum rotating black holes, (iv) quantum dS regime, (v) late bhdS evaporat…
We investigate string-like solutions in four dimensions based on Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. For a restricted class of solutions where the Cotton tensor vanishes, we find that the string-like solutions in Einstein gravity including the BTZ black strings are solutions in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity as well. The geometry is warped in the same way as in Einstein gravity, but the "conformal" lapse function is not constrained in Hořava-Lifshitz gravity. It turns out that if $λ\ne 1$, there exist no other solutions. For the value of model parameter with which Einstein gravity recovers in IR limit (i.e., $λ…
We reinvestigate the thermodynamics of black objects (holes and strings) in four-dimensional braneworld models that are originally constructed by Emparan, Horowitz and Myers based on the anti-de Sitter (AdS) C-metric. After proving the uniqueness of slicing the AdS C-metric, we derive thermodynamic quantities of the black objects by means of the Euclidean formulation and find that we have no necessity of requiring any regularization to calculate their classical action. We show that there exist the Bekenstein-Hawking law and the thermodynamic first law. The thermodynamic mass of the localized b…
In this paper we construct new solutions of the Kahler-Yang-Mills equations, by applying dimensional reduction methods to the product of the complex projective line with a compact Riemann surface. The resulting equations, that we call gravitating vortex equations, describe Abelian vortices on the Riemann surface with back reaction of the metric. As a particular case of these gravitating vortices on the Riemann sphere we find solutions of the Einstein-Bogomol'nyi equations, which physically correspond to Nielsen-Olesen cosmic strings in the Bogomol'nyi phase. We use this to provide a Geometric …
We study the perturbative dynamics of an infinite gravitating Nambu-Goto string within the general-relativistic perturbation framework. We develop the gauge invariant metric perturbation on a spacetime containing a self-gravitating straight string with a finite thickness and solve the linearized Einstein equation. In the thin string case, we show that the string does not emit gravitational waves by its free oscillation in the first order with respect to its oscillation amplitude, nevertheless the string actually bends when the incidental gravitational waves go through it.
We examine the field equations of a self-gravitating global string in low energy superstring gravity, allowing for an arbitrary coupling of the global string to the dilaton. Massive and massless dilatons are considered. For the massive dilaton the spacetime is similar to the recently discovered non-singular time-dependent Einstein self-gravitating global string, but the massless dilaton generically gives a singular spacetime, even allowing for time-dependence. We also demonstrate a time-dependent non-singular string/anti-string configuration, in which the string pair causes a compactification …
We study Born-Infeld strings in a six dimensional brane world scenario recently suggested by Giovannini, Meyer and Shaposhnikov (GMS). In the limit of the Einstein-Abelian-Higgs model, we classify the solutions found by GMS. Especially, we point out that the warped solutions, which lead to localisation of gravity, are the - by the presence of the cosmological constant - deformed inverted string solutions. Further, we construct the Born-Infeld analogues of the anti-warped solutions and determine the domain of existence of these solutions, while a analytic argument leads us to a "no-go" hypothes…
The recently discovered alignment of quasar polarizations on very large scales could possibly explained by considering cosmic strings on a warped five dimensional spacetime. Compact objects, such as cosmic strings, could have tremendous mass in the bulk, while their warped manifestations in the brane can be consistent with general relativity in 4D. The self-gravitating cosmic string induces gravitational wavelike disturbances which could have effects felt on the brane, i.e., the massive effective 4D modes (Kaluza-Klein modes) of the perturbative 5D graviton. This effect is amplified by the tim…
We investigate in detail solutions of supergravity that involve warped products of flat geometries of the type M(p+1) x R x T(D-p-2) depending on a single coordinate. In the absence of fluxes, the solutions include flat space and Kasner-like vacua that break all supersymmetries. In the presence of a symmetric flux, there are three families of solutions that are characterized by a pair of boundaries and have a singularity at one of them, the origin. The first family comprises supersymmetric vacua, which capture a universal limiting behavior at the origin. The first and second families also cont…
We investigate the effects of the leading tadpole potentials of 10D tachyon-free non-supersymmetric strings in warped products of flat geometries of the type M(p+1) x R x T(10-p-2) depending on a single coordinate. In the absence of fluxes and for p<8, there are two families of these vacua for the orientifold disk-level potential, both involving a finite internal interval. Their asymptotics are surprisingly captured by tadpole-free solutions, isotropic for one family and anisotropic at one end for the other. In contrast, for the heterotic torus-level potential there are four types of vacua. Th…
We discuss a possible compactification of a higher-dimensional gravitational theory, which give rise to a de Sitter or an accelerating universe, to the extent that it can describe a low energy limit of string theory. Such analysis can be carried out by the usual integration over the internal space in the Einstein equations. The combined field equations in the higher-dimensional supergravity theory after integration give several new terms which may help to realize a de Sitter compactification. After developing the general framework, we describe some specific examples involving the dilaton and m…
We study the role of the Gauss-Bonnet corrections and two loop higher genus contribution to the gravity action on the Kaluza-Klien modes and their interactions for different bulk fields which enable one to study various phenomenological implications of string loop corrected Gauss-Bonnet modified warped geometry model in one canvas. We have explicitly derived a phenomenological bound on the Gauss-Bonnet parameter so that the required Planck to TeV scale hierarchy can be achieved through the warp factor in the light of recently discovered Higgs like boson at 125 GeV. Moreover due to the presence…
Assuming the four-dimensional space-time to be a general warped product of two surfaces we reduce the four-dimensional Einstein equations to a two-dimensional problem which can be solved. All global vacuum solutions are explicitly constructed and analysed. The classification of the solutions includes the Schwarzschild, the (anti-)de Sitter, and other well-known solutions but also many exact ones whose detailed global properties to our knowledge have not been discussed before. They have a natural physical interpretation describing single or several wormholes, domain walls of curvature singulari…
We construct a familly of exact solutions of Lovelock equations describing codimension four branes with discrete symmetry in the transverse space. Unlike what is known from pure Einstein gravity, where such brane solutions of higher codimension are singular, the solutions we find, for the complete Lovelock theory, only present removable singularities. The latter account for a localised tension-like energy-momentum tensor on the brane, in analogy with the case of a codimension two self-gravitating cosmic string in pure Einstein gravity. However, the solutions we discuss present two main distinc…
In this work we explore the complexity path integral optimization process for the case of warped $\text{AdS}_3$/warped $\text{CFT}_2$ correspondence. We first present the specific renormalization flow equations and analyze the differences with the case of CFT. We discuss how the "chiral Liouville action" could replace the Liouville action as the suitable cost function for this case. Starting from the other side of the story, we also show how the deformed Liouville actions could be derived from the spacelike, timelike and null warped metrics and how the behaviors of boundary topological terms c…
We derive a low-energy effective theory for gravity with anti-D branes, which are essential to get de Sitter solutions in the type IIB string warped compactification, by taking account of gravitational backreactions of anti-D branes. In order to see the effects of the self-gravity of anti-D branes, a simplified model is studied where a 5-dimensional anti-de Sitter ({\it AdS}) spacetime is realized by the bulk cosmological constant and the 5-form flux, and anti-D branes are coupled to the 5-form field by Chern-Simon terms. The {\it AdS} spacetime is truncated by introducing UV and IR cut-off br…
We present a curvaton model from type IIB string theory compactified on a warped throat with approximate isometries. Considering an (anti-)D3-brane sitting at the throat tip as a prototype standard model brane, we show that the brane's position in the isometry directions can play the role of curvatons. The basic picture is that the fluctuations of the (anti-)D3-brane in the angular isometry directions during inflation eventually turns into the primordial curvature perturbations, and subsequently the brane's oscillation excites other open string modes on the brane and reheat the universe. We fi…
We discuss cosmic Nielsen-Olesen strings in space-times endowed with a positive cosmological constant. For the cylindrically symmetric, static free cosmic string, we discuss the contribution of the cosmological constant to the angle deficit, and to the motion of the null/timelike geodesics. For a non-gravitating cosmic string in a Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time, we discuss how a thin string can pierce the two horizons. We also present a metric which describes the exterior of a self gravitating thin string present in the Schwarzschild-de Sitter space-time.
In this paper, we construct the first analytic examples of (3+1)-dimensional self-gravitating regular cosmic tube solutions which are superconducting, free of curvature singularities and with non-trivial topological charge in the Einstein-SU(2) non-linear sigma-model. These gravitating topological solitons at a large distance from the axis look like a (boosted) cosmic string with an angular defect given by the parameters of the theory, and near the axis, the parameters of the solutions can be chosen so that the metric is singularity free and without angular defect. The curvature is concentrate…
We investigate the semi-classical instability of vacuum domain walls to processes where the domain walls decay by the formation of closed string loop boundaries on their worldvolumes. Intuitively, a wall which is initially spherical may `pop', so that a hole corresponding to a string boundary component on the wall, may form. We find instantons, and calculate the rates, for such processes. We show that after puncture, the hole grows exponentially at the same rate that the wall expands. It follows that the wall is never completely thermalized by a single expanding hole; at arbitrarily late times…
On a warped five-dimensional Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker(FLRW) spacetime, dark energy can be induced by a U(1) scalar-gauge field on the brane. We consider a zero effective cosmological constant, i.e., the Randall-Sundrum(RS) fine-tuning and no bulk matter fields. The standard model fields interact via the bulk Weyl tensor and cause brane fluctuations. Due to the warp factor, disturbances don't fade away during the expansion of the universe. The late-time behavior could be significant deviate from the standard evolution of the universe. The effect is triggered by the time-dependent p…
