We describe an efficient DQC1-algorithm to quantify the amount of Geometric Quantum Discord present in the output state of a DQC1 computation. DQC1 is a model of computation that utilizes separable states to solve a problem with no known efficient classical algorithm and is known to contain quantum correlations as measured by the discord. For the general case of a (1+n)-qubit DQC1-state we provide an analytical expression for the Geometric Quantum Discord and find that its typical (and maximum) value decreases exponentially with n. This is in contrast to the standard Quantum Discord whose value for typical DQC1-states is known to be independent of n. We experimentally demonstrate the proposed algorithm on a four-qubit liquid-state nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor. In the special case of a two-qubit DQC1 model, we also provide an expression for the Quantum Discord that only requires the outcome of the DQC1 algorithm.
We propose a scheme to directly measure the exact value of geometric quantum discord of an arbitrary two-qubit state. We only need to perform the projective measurement in the all anti-symmetric subspace and our scheme is parametrically efficient in contrast to the widely adopted quantum state tomography scheme in the sense of less parameter estimations and projectors. Moreover, the present scheme can be easily realized with the current experimental techniques.
The behavior of total purely quantum correlation (discord) in dimers consisting of dipolar-coupled spins 1/2 is studied. We found that the discord Q=0 at the absolute zero temperature. With increasing the temperature $T$, at first the quantum correlations in the system increase, smoothly reach the maximum, and then turn again into zero according to the asymptotic law $T^{-2}$. It is also shown that in absence of external magnetic field $B$, the classical correlation $C$ at $T\to0$ is, vice versa, maximal. Our calculations predict that in crystalline gypsum ${\rm CaSO_4\cdot2H_2O}$ the value of…
The threshold between classical and nonclassical two-qubit states is drawn at the place when these states can no longer be described by classical correlations, i.e., quantum discord or entanglement appear. However, to check if the correlations are classical (in terms of quantum discord and entanglement) it is sufficient to witness the lack of quantum discord because its zero value implies the lack of entanglement. We explain how the indicator of quantum discord introduced by Girolami and Adesso [Phys. Rev. Lett. 108, 150403 (2012)] can be practically measured in linear-optical systems using st…
Quantum correlations represent a fundamental tool for studies ranging from basic science to quantum technologies. Different non-classical correlations have been identified and studied, as entanglement and discord. In view of future applications in this letter we explore experimentally the rich geometry of Bell-diagonal states, measuring the values of entanglement and discord and highlighting the effect of decoherence in real experiments.
The total quantum correlation (discord) in Heisenberg dimers is expressed via the spin-spin correlation function, internal energy, specific heat or magnetic susceptibility. This allows one to indirectly measure the discord through neutron scattering, as well as calorimetric or magnetometric experiments. Using the available experimental data, we found the discord for a number of binuclear Heisenberg substances with both antiferro- and ferromagnetic interactions. For the dimerized antiferromagnet copper nitrate Cu(NO_3)_2*2.5H_2O, the three independent experimental methods named above lead to a …
We show that without quantum correlations, energy cannot flow. The result follows from a simple theorem that shows that systems whose dynamics do not generate quantum discord are effectively non-interacting. We show that the rate of heat transfer between two quantum systems at different temperatures is directly proportional to the instantaneous rate of increase of diagonal/energetic discord between the systems. Consequently, nanoscale heat transfer experiments can be used to measure discord directly. We report the results of a measurement of the increase in discord due to nanoscale heat flow a…
In this paper we develop an approach for detecting entanglement, which is based on measuring quantum correlations and constructing a correlation matrix. The correlation matrix is then used for defining a family of parameters, named Correlation Minor Norms, which allow one to detect entanglement. This approach generalizes the computable cross-norm or realignment (CCNR) criterion, and moreover requires measuring a state-independent set of operators. Furthermore, we illustrate a scheme which yields for each Correlation Minor Norm a separable state that maximizes it. The proposed entanglement dete…
In this article, by considering Bell-diagonal two-qubit initial states submitted to local dynamics generated by the phase damping, bit flip, phase flip, bit-phase flip, and depolarizing channels, we report some elegant direct-dynamical relations between geometric measures of entanglement and discord. The complex scenario appearing already in this simplified case study indicates that similarly simple relation shall hardly be found in more general situations.
We study the dynamics of classical correlation, quantum discord and measurement-induced disturbance of Dirac fields in the background of a dilaton black hole. We present an alternative physical interpretation of single mode approximation for Dirac fields in black hole spacetimes. We show that the classical and quantum correlations are degraded as the increase of black hole's dilaton. We find that, comparing to the inertial systems, the quantum correlation measured by the one-side measuring discord is always not symmetric with respect to the measured subsystems, while the measurement-induced di…
Any two-qubit state can be represented, geometrically, as an ellipsoid with a certain size and a center located within the Bloch sphere of one of the qubits. Points of this ellipsoid represent the post-measurement states when the other qubit is measured. Based on the most demolition concept in the definition of quantum discord, we study the amount of demolition when the two post-measurement states, represented as two points on the steering ellipsoid, have the most distinguishability. We use trace distance as a measure of distinguishability and obtain the maximum distinguishability for some cla…
The non-Markovian decoherence of quantum and classical correlations is analytically obtained when two qubits are asymmetrically subjected to the bit flip channel and phase flip channel. For one class of initial mixed states, quantum correlations quantified by quantum discord decay synchronously with classical correlations. The discovery that the decaying rates of quantum and classical correlations suddenly change at the characteristic time is physically interpreted by the distance from quantum state to the closest classical states. In a large time interval, quantum correlations are greater tha…
We investigate evolution of quantum correlations in ensembles of two-qubit nuclear spin systems via nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. We use discord as a measure of quantum correlations and the Werner state as an explicit example. We first introduce different ways of measuring discord and geometric discord in two-qubit systems and then describe the following experimental studies: (a) We quantitatively measure discord for Werner-like states prepared using an entangling pulse sequence. An initial thermal state with zero discord is gradually and periodically transformed into a mixed state wi…
We consider the issue of what should count as a resource for measurement-based quantum computation (MBQC). While a state that supports universal quantum computation clearly should be considered a resource, universality should not be necessary given the existence of interesting, but less computationally-powerful, classes of MBQCs. Here, we propose minimal criteria for a state to be considered a resource state for MBQC. Using these criteria, we explain why discord-free states cannot be resources for MBQC, contrary to recent claims [Hoban et al., arXiv:1304.2667v1]. Independently of our criteria,…
Macroscopic behavior such as the lack of interference patterns has been attributed to "decoherence", a word with several possible definitions such as (1) the loss of off-diagonal density matrix elements, (2) the flow of information to the environment, (3) the loss of complementary information, and (4) the loss of the ability to create entanglement in a measurement. In this article, we attempt to unify these distinct definitions by providing general quantitative connections between them, valid for all finite-dimensional quantum systems or quantum processes. The most important application of our…
We propose the first correct special-purpose quantum circuits for preparation of Bell-diagonal states (BDS), and implement them on the IBM Quantum computer, characterizing and testing complex aspects of their quantum correlations in the full parameter space. Among the circuits proposed, one involves only two quantum bits but requires adapted quantum tomography routines handling classical bits in parallel. The entire class of Bell-diagonal states is generated, and a number of characteristic indicators, namely entanglement of formation, CHSH non-locality, steering and discord, are experimentally…
We report on an experiment to detect non-classical correlations in a highly mixed state. The correlations are characterized by the quantum discord and are observed using four qubits in a liquid state nuclear magnetic resonance quantum information processor. The state analyzed is the output of a DQC1 computation, whose input is a single quantum bit accompanied by n maximally mixed qubits. This model of computation outperforms the best known classical algorithms, and although it contains vanishing entanglement it is known to have quantum correlations characterized by the quantum discord. This ex…
Quantum discord is a more general measure of quantum correlations than entanglement and has been proposed as a resource in certain quantum information processing tasks. The computation of discord is mostly confined to two-qubit systems for which an analytical calculational scheme is available. The utilization of quantum correlations in quantum information-based applications is limited by the problem of decoherence, i.e., the loss of coherence due to the inevitable interaction of a quantum system with its environment. The dynamics of quantum correlations due to decoherence may be studied in the…
In quantum mechanics, continuously measuring an observable steers the system into one eigenstate of that observable. This property has interesting and useful consequences when the observable is a joint property of two remotely separated qubits. In particular, if the measurement of the two-qubit joint observable is performed in a way that is blind to single-qubit information, quantum back-action generates correlation of the discord type even if the measurement is weak and inefficient. We demonstrate the ability to generate these quantum correlations in a circuit-QED setup by performing a weak j…
We discuss the realization of quantum advantage in a system without quantum entanglement but with non-zero quantum discord. We propose an optical realization of symmetric two-qubit $X$-states with controllable anti-diagonal elements. This approach does not requires initially entangled states, and it can generate states that have quantum discord, with or without entanglement. We discuss how quantum advantage can be attained in the context of a two-qubit game. We show that when entanglement is not present, the maximum quantum advantage is 1/3 bit. A comparable quantum advantage, 0.311 bit, can b…
Quantum discord is an optimal resource for the quantification of classical and non-classical correlations as compared to other related measures. Geometric measure of quantum discord is another measure of quantum correlations. Recently, the geometric quantum discord for multipartite states has been introduced by Jianwei Xu [arxiv:quant/ph.1205.0330]. Motivated from the recent study [Ann. Phys. 327 (2012) 851] for the bipartite systems, I have investigated global quantum discord (QD) and geometric quantum discord (GQD) under the influence of external environments for different multipartite state…
We construct a model of quantum metrology inspired by the computational model known as deterministic quantum computation with one quantum bit (DQC1). Using only one pure qubit together with $l$ fully-mixed qubits we obtain measurement precision at the standard quantum limit, which is typically obtained using the same number of uncorrelated qubits in fully-pure states. The standard quantum limit can be exceeded using an additional qubit, which adds only a small amount of purity. We show that the discord in the final state vanishes only in the limit of attaining infinite precision for the parame…
Out-of-time-ordered correlators (OTOC) are a quantifier of quantum information scrambling and quantum chaos. We propose an efficient quantum algorithm to measure OTOCs that provides an exponential speed-up over the best known classical algorithm provided the OTOC operator to be estimated admits an efficient gate decomposition. We also discuss a scheme to obtain information about the eigenvalue spectrum and the spectral density of OTOCs.
We investigate the notion of quantumness based on the non-commutativity of the algebra of observables and introduce a measure of quantumness based on the mutual incompatibility of quantum states. We show that such a quantity can be experimentally measured with an interferometric setup and that, when an arbitrary bipartition of a given composite system is introduced, it detects the one-way quantum correlations restricted to one of the two subsystems. We finally show that, by combining only two projective measurements and carrying out the interference procedure, our measure becomes an efficient …
The effect of measurement attributes (quantum level of precision, finite duration) on the classical and quantum correlations is analysed for a pair of qubits immersed in a common reservoir. We show that the quantum discord is enhanced as the precision of the measuring instrument is increased, and both the classical correlation and the quantum discord experience noticeable changes during finite-time measurements performed on a neighboring partition of the entangled system. The implications of these results on the "information-disturbance relationship" are examined, with critical analysis of the…
A recursive approach to determine the Hilbert-Schmidt measure of pairwise quantum discord in a special class of symmetric states of $k$ qubits is presented. We especially focus on the reduced states of $k$ qubits obtained from a balanced superposition of symmetric $n$-qubit states (multiqubit Schrödinger cat states) by tracing out $n-k$ particles $(k=2,3, \cdots ,n-1)$. Two pairing schemes are considered. In the first one, the geometric discord measuring the correlation between one qubit and the party grouping $(k-1)$ qubits is explicitly derived. This uses recursive relations between the Fano…
A general state of an $m\otimes n$ system is a classical-quantum state if and only if its associated $A$-correlation matrix (a matrix constructed from the coherence vector of the party $A$, the correlation matrix of the state, and a function of the local coherence vector of the subsystem $B$), has rank no larger than $m-1$. Using the general Schatten $p$-norms, we quantify quantum correlation by measuring any violation of this condition. The required minimization can be carried out for the general $p$-norms and any function of the local coherence vector of the unmeasured subsystem, leading to …
We propose the use of Rydberg interactions and ensembles of cold atoms in mixed state for the implementation of a protocol for deterministic quantum computation with one quantum bit (DQC1) that can be readily operated in high dimensional Hilbert spaces. We propose an experimental test for the scalability of the protocol and to study the physics of discord. Furthermore we develop a scheme to add control to non-trivial unitaries that will enable the study of many-body physics with ensembles in mixed states.
We investigate signatures of non-classicality in quantum states, in particular, those involved in the DQC1 model of mixed-state quantum computation [Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 5672 (1998)]. To do so, we consider two known non-classicality criteria. The first quantifies disturbance of a quantum state under locally noneffective unitary operations (LNU), which are local unitaries acting invariantly on a subsystem. The second quantifies measurement induced disturbance (MID) in the eigenbasis of the reduced density matrices. We study the role of both figures of non-classicality in the exponential speedup…
We study quantum correlations and discord in a bipartite continuous variable hybrid system formed by linear combinations of coherent states $|α\rangle$ and single photon added coherent states (SPACS) of the form $|ψ\rangle_{\text{dp(pa)}}= \mathcal{N}/\sqrt{2} (\hat{a}^\dagger |α\rangle_a |α\rangle_b \pm \hat{b}^\dagger |α\rangle_a |α\rangle_b)$. We stablish a relationship between the quantum discord with a local observable (the quadrature variance for one sub-system) under the influence of scattering and phase fluctuation noise. For the pure states the quantum correlations are characterized b…
We propose a modified metric based on the Hilbert-Schmidt norm and adopt it to define a rescaled version of the geometric measure of quantum discord. Such a measure is found not to suffer from the pathological dependence on state purity. Although the employed metric is still noncontractive under quantum operations, we show that the resulting indicator of quantum correlations is in agreement with other bona fide discord measures in a number of physical examples. We present a critical assessment of the requirements of reliability versus computability when approaching the task of quantifying, or …
The state disturbance induced by locally measuring a quantum system yields a signature of nonclassical correlations beyond entanglement. Here we present a detailed study of such correlations for two-qubit mixed states. To overcome the asymmetry of quantum discord and the unfaithfulness of measurement-induced disturbance (severely overestimating quantum correlations), we propose an ameliorated measurement-induced disturbance as nonclassicality indicator, optimized over joint local measurements, and we derive its closed expression for relevant two-qubit states. We study its analytical relation w…
We demonstrate an experimental method for measuring energy-time entanglement over almost 80 nm spectral bandwidth in a single shot with a quantum bit error rate below 0.5%. Our scheme is extremely cost-effective and efficient in terms of resources as it employs only one source of entangled photons and one fixed unbalanced interferometer per phase-coded analysis basis. We show that the maximum analysis spectral bandwidth is obtained when the analysis interferometers are properly unbalanced, a strategy which can be straightforwardly applied to most of today's experiments based on energy-time and…
We propose two deterministic secure quantum communication (DSQC) protocols employing three-qubit GHZ-like states and five-qubit Brown states as quantum channels for secure transmission of information in units of two bits and three bits using multipartite teleportation schemes developed here. In these schemes, the sender's capability in selecting quantum channels and the measuring bases leads to improved qubit efficiency of the protocols.
We report the experimental measurement of bipartite quantum correlations of an unknown two-qubit state. Using a liquid state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) setup and employing geometric discord, we evaluate the quantum correlations of a state without resorting to prior knowledge of its density matrix. The method is applicable to any (2 x d) system and provides, in terms of number of measurements required, an advantage over full state tomography scaling with the dimension d of the unmeasured subsystem. The negativity of quantumness is measured as well for reference. We also observe the phenom…
The overlap measurement scheme accomplishes to evaluate the overlap of two input quantum states by only measuring an introduced auxiliary qubit, irrespective of the complexity of the two input states. We find a counterintuitive phenomenon that no quantum dissonance can be found, even though the auxiliary qubit might be entangled, classically correlated or even uncorrelated with the two input states based on different types of input states. In principle, this provides an opposite but supplementary example to the remarkable algorithm of the deterministic quantum computation with one qubit in whi…
We believe that the hypothesis `it from bit' originates from the assumption that probabilities have a fundamental, irremovable status in quantum theory. We argue against this assumption and highlight four well-known reformulations / modifications of the theory in which probabilities and the measuring apparatus do not play a fundamental role. These are: Bohmian Mechanics, Dynamical Collapse Models, Trace Dynamics, and Quantum Theory without Classical Time. Here the `it' is primary and the `bit' is derived from the `it'.
Demonstrating quantum advantage with less powerful but more realistic devices is of great importance in modern quantum information science. Recently, a significant quantum speedup was achieved in the problem of learning a hidden parity function with noise. However, if all data qubits at the query output are completely depolarized, the algorithm fails. In this work, we present a quantum parity learning algorithm that exhibits quantum advantage as long as one qubit is provided with nonzero polarization in each query. In this scenario, the quantum parity learning naturally becomes deterministic q…
In this paper we propose a quantum random number generator (QRNG) which utilizes an entangled photon pair in a Bell singlet state, and is certified explicitly by value indefiniteness. While "true randomness" is a mathematical impossibility, the certification by value indefiniteness ensures the quantum random bits are incomputable in the strongest sense. This is the first QRNG setup in which a physical principle (Kochen-Specker value indefiniteness) guarantees that no single quantum bit produced can be classically computed (reproduced and validated), the mathematical form of bitwise physical un…
Several attacks have been proposed on quantum key distribution systems with gated single-photon detectors. The attacks involve triggering the detectors outside the center of the detector gate, and/or using bright illumination to exploit classical photodiode mode of the detectors. Hence a secure detection scheme requires two features: The detection events must take place in the middle of the gate, and the detector must be single-photon sensitive. Here we present a technique called bit-mapped gating, which is an elegant way to force the detections in the middle of the detector gate by coupling d…
Self-testing and Semi-Device Independent protocols are becoming the preferred choice for quantum technologies, being able to certify their quantum nature with few assumptions and simple experimental implementations. In particular for Quantum Random Number Generators the possibility of monitoring in real time the entropy of the source only by measuring the input/output statistics is a characteristic that no other classical system could provide. The cost of this new possibility is not necessarily increased complexity and reduced performance. Indeed, here we show that with a simple optical setup …
In a deterministic quantum key distribution (DQKD) protocol with a two-way quantum channel, Bob sends a qubit to Alice who then encodes a key bit onto the qubit and sends it back to Bob. After measuring the returned qubit, Bob can obtain Alice's key bit immediately, without basis reconciliation. Since an eavesdropper may attack the qubits traveling on either the Bob-Alice channel or the Alice-Bob channel, the security analysis of DQKD with a two-way quantum channel is complicated and its unconditional security has been controversial. This paper presents a security proof of a single-photon four…

Digital computers store information in the form of bits that can take on one of two values 0 and 1, while quantum computers are based on qubits that are described by a complex wavefunction, whose squared magnitude gives the probability of measuring either 0 or 1. Here, we make the case for a probabilistic computer based on p-bits, which take on values 0 and 1 with controlled probabilities and can be implemented with specialized compact energy-efficient hardware. We propose a generic architecture for such p-computers and emulate systems with thousands of p-bits to show that they can significant…
The transverse Ising Model (TIM) in one dimension is the simplest model which exhibits a quantum phase transition (QPT). Quantities related to quantum information theoretic measures like entanglement, quantum discord (QD) and fidelity are known to provide signatures of QPTs. The issue is less well explored when the quantum system is subjected to decoherence due to its interaction, represented by a quantum channel, with an environment. In this paper we study the dynamics of the mutual information $I(ρ_{AB})$, the classical correlations $C(ρ_{AB})$ and the quantum correlations $Q(ρ_{AB})$, as me…
In this paper we propose a new ternary QRNG based on measuring located value indefinite observables with probabilities $1/4, 1/2,1/4$ and prove that every sequence generated is maximally unpredictable, 3-bi-immune (a stronger form of bi-immunity), and its prefixes are Borel normal. The ternary quantum random digits produced by the QRNG are algorithmically transformed into quantum random bits using an alphabetic morphism which preserves all the above properties.
