We define multicritical CDT models of 2d quantum gravity and show that they are a special case of multicritical generalized CDT models obtained from the new scaling limit, the so-called "classical" scaling limit, of matrix models. The multicritical behavior agrees with the multicritical behavior of the so-called branched polymers.
We review some recent results by Ambjorn et al. (1202.4435) and the authors (1202.4322,1203.5034) in which multicritical points of the CDT matrix model were found and in a particular example identified with a hard dimer model. This identification requires solving the combinatorial problem of counting configurations of dimers on CDTs.
The Causal Dynamical Triangulation model of quantum gravity (CDT) has a transfer matrix, relating spatial geometries at adjacent (discrete lattice) times. The transfer matrix uniquely determines the theory. We show that the measurements of the scale factor of the (CDT) universe are well described by an effective transfer matrix where the matrix elements are labeled only by the scale factor. Using computer simulations we determine the effective transfer matrix elements and show how they relate to an effective minisuperspace action at all scales.
We measure the effective action in all three phases of 4-dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) using the transfer matrix method. The transfer matrix is parametrized by the total 3-volume of the CDT universe at a given (discrete) time. We present a simple effective model based on the transfer matrix measured in the de Sitter phase. It allows us to reconstruct the results of full CDT in this phase. We argue that the transfer matrix method is valid not only inside the de Sitter phase ('C') but also in the other two phases. A parametrization of the measured transfer matrix / effective …
We show that for 1+1 dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) coupled to 4 massive scalar fields one can construct an effective transfer matrix if the masses squared is larger than or equal to 0.05. The properties of this transfer matrix can explain why CDT coupled to matter can behave completely different from "pure" CDT. We identify the important critical exponent in the effective action, which may determine the universality class of the model.
We study the effective transfer matrix within the semiclassical and bifurcation phases of CDT quantum gravity. We find that for sufficiently large lattice volumes the kinetic term of the effective transfer matrix has a different sign in each of the two phases. We argue that this sign change can be viewed as a Wick rotation of the metric. We discuss the likely microscopic mechanism responsible for the bifurcation phase transition, and propose an order parameter that can potentially be used to determine the precise location and order of the transition. Using the effective transfer matrix we appr…
We show that there exists a simple generalization of Kazakov's multicritical one-matrix model, which interpolates between the various multicritical points of the model. The associated multicritical potential takes the form of a power series with a heavy tail, leading to a cut of the potential and its derivative at the real axis, and reduces to a polynomial at Kazakov's multicritical points. From the combinatorial point of view the generalized model allows polygons of arbitrary large degrees (or vertices of arbitrary large degree, when considering the dual graphs), and it is the weight assigned…
We discuss multicritical behavior of $c=1$ matrix model, extending the recent work of ref. \cite{CIO} on a nonperturbative completion of the density of states function. For the odd orders of multicriticality, we are able to determine the higher genus contributions and a nonperturbative completion from the WKB wave function of the multicritical periodic potential. The expression for the contributions as a function of the scaled chemical potential is found to be the same as the one at the lowest critical point. We point out a strange scaling behavior.
It is shown that generalized CDT, the two-dimensional theory of quantum gravity, constructed as a scaling limit from so-called causal dynamical triangulations, can be obtained from a cubic matrix model. It involves taking a new scaling limit of matrix models, which is more natural from a classical point of view.
We construct bosonic and fermionic matrix-vector models which describe orbifolded string worldsheets at a limit in which the dimension of the vector space and the matrix order are taken to infinity. We evaluate tree-level one-loop or multiloop amplitudes of these string worldsheets by means of Schwinger-Dyson equations and derive their expressions at the multicritical points. Some of these amplitudes resemble or are closely related to those of ordinary multicritical Hermitian matrix models by a constant factor, whereas some differ significantly.
Universality of multicritical unitary matrix models is shown and a new scaling behavior is found in the microscopic region of the spectrum, which may be relevant for the low energy spectrum of the Dirac operator at the chiral phase transition.
We study perturbations around the generalized Kazakov multicritical one-matrix model. The multicritical matrix model has a potential where the coefficients of $z^n$ only fall off as a power $1/n^{s+1}$. This implies that the potential and its derivatives have a cut along the real axis, leading to technical problems when one performs perturbations away from the generalized Kazakov model. Nevertheless it is possible to relate the perturbed partition function to the tau-function of a KdV hierarchy and solve the model by a genus expansion in the double scaling limit.
We discuss extensions of a recently introduced model of multi-critical CDT to higher multi-critical points. As in the case of pure CDT the continuum limit can be taken on the level of the action and the resulting continuum surface model is again described by a matrix model. The resolvent, a simple observable of the quantum geometry which is accessible from the matrix model is calculated for arbitrary multi-critical points. We go beyond the matrix model by determining the propagator using the peeling procedure which is used to extract the effective quantum Hamiltonian and the fractal dimension …
3+1 dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) describe a quantum theory of fluctuating geometries without the introduction of a background geometry. If the topology of space is constrained to be that of a three-dimensional torus we show that the system will fluctuate around a dynamically formed background geometry which can be understood from a simple minisuperspace action which contains both a classical part and a quantum part. We determine this action by integrating out degrees of freedom in the full model, as well as by transfer matrix methods.
We present recent results concerning the measurement and analysis of the effective action in four-dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations. The action describes quantum fluctuations of the spatial volume of the CDT universe (or alternatively the scale factor) after integrating out other degrees of freedom. We use the covariance of volume fluctuations to measure and parametrize the effective action inside the de Sitter phase, also called the C phase. We show that the action is consistent with a simple discretization of the minisuperspace action (with a reversed overall sign). We discuss poss…
We construct a tensor-matrix model which describes 3-dimensional (3D) Causal Dynamical Triangulation (CDT) of open-closed surface. Though the usual splitting interaction of a surface is not derived from the stochastic quantization procedure, it provides another interaction of IK-type, which becomes the sole quantum correction. Through the double scaling limit, it realizes CDT open-closed surface field theory including the IK-type interactions in the same condition with the closed surface CDT model. Further, we investigate the commutation relations of the generators, for surfaces with the lowes…
In [arXiv:1805.05057 [hep-th]],[arXiv:1812.00811 [hep-th]], the partition function of the Gross-Witten-Wadia unitary matrix model with the logarithmic term has been identified with the $τ$ function of a certain Painlevé system, and the double scaling limit of the associated discrete Painlevé equation to the critical point provides us with the Painlevé II equation. This limit captures the critical behavior of the $su(2)$, $N_f =2$ $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theory around its Argyres-Douglas $4D$ superconformal point. Here, we consider further extension of the model that contains the $…
We define a new scaling limit of matrix models which can be related to the method of causal dynamical triangulations (CDT) used when investigating two-dimensional quantum gravity. Surprisingly, the new scaling limit of the matrix models is also a matrix model, thus explaining why the recently developed CDT continuum string field theory (arXiv:0802.0719) has a matrix-model representation (arXiv:0804.0252).
We review a recently obtained analytical solution of a restricted so-called hard dimers model coupled to two-dimensional CDT. The combinatorial solution is obtained via bijections of causal triangulations with dimers and decorated trees. We show that the scaling limit of this model can also be obtained from a multi-critical point of the transfer matrix for dynamical triangulations of triangles and squares when one disallows for spatial topology changes to occur.
In this paper we construct a class of random matrix ensembles labelled by a real parameter $α\in (0,1)$, whose eigenvalue density near zero behaves like $|x|^α$. The eigenvalue spacing near zero scales like $1/N^{1/(1+α)}$ and thus these ensembles are representatives of a {\em continous} series of new universality classes. We study these ensembles both in the bulk and on the scale of eigenvalue spacing. In the former case we obtain formulas for the eigenvalue density, while in the latter case we obtain approximate expressions for the scaling functions in the microscopic limit using a very simp…
We introduce a new matrix model that describes Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) in two dimensions. In order to do so, we introduce a new, simpler definition of 2D CDT and show it to be equivalent to the old one. The model makes use of ideas from dually weighted matrix models, combined with multi-matrix models, and can be studied by the method of character expansion.
Several new results on the multicritical behavior of rectangular matrix models are presented. We calculate the free energy in the saddle point approximation, and show that at the triple-scaling point, the result is the same as that derived from the recursion formulae. In the triple-scaling limit, we obtain the string equation and a flow equation for arbitrary multicritical points. Parametric solutions are also examined for the limit of almost-square matrix models. This limit is shown to provide an explicit matrix model realization of the scaling equations proposed to describe open-closed strin…
Through the continuum limit of the one matrix model on the multicritical point the corresponding Schwinger-Dyson equation of temporal-gauge string field theory is derived. It agrees with that of the background independent formulation recently proposed.
The correspondence claimed by M. Douglas, between the multicritical regimes of the two-matrix model and 2D gravity coupled to (p,q) rational matter field, is worked out explicitly. We found the minimal (p,q) multicritical potentials U(X) and V(Y) which are polynomials of degree p and q, correspondingly. The loop averages W(X) and \tilde W(Y) are shown to satisfy the Heisenberg relations {W,X} =1 and {\tilde W,Y}=1 and essentially coincide with the canonical momenta P and Q. The operators X and Y create the two kinds of boundaries in the (p,q) model related by the duality (p,q) - (q,p). Finally…
A thorough analysis of stochastically stabilised hermitian one matrix models for two dimensional quantum gravity at all its $(2,2k-1)$ multicritical points is made. It is stressed that only the zero fermion sector of the supersymmetric hamiltonian, i.e., the forward Fokker-Planck hamiltonian, is relevant for the analysis of bosonic matter coupled to two dimensional gravity. Therefore, supersymmetry breaking is not the physical mechanism that creates non perturbative effects in the case of points of even multicriticality $k$. Non perturbative effects in the string coupling constant $g_{str}$ re…
We generalize the Marinari-Parisi definition for pure two dimensional quantum gravity $(k = 2)$ to all non unitary minimal multicritical points $(k \geq 3)$. The resulting interacting Fermi gas theory is treated in the collective field framework. Making use of the fact that the matrices evolve in Langevin time, the Jacobian from matrix coordinates to collective modes is similar to the corresponding Jacobian in $d = 1$ matrix models. The collective field theory is analyzed in the planar limit. The saddle point eigenvalue distribution is the one that defines the original multicritical point and …
The Causal Dynamical Triangulation model of quantum gravity (CDT) is a proposition to evaluate the path integral over space-time geometries using a lattice regularization with a discrete proper time and geometries realized as simplicial manifolds. The model admits a Wick rotation to imaginary time for each space-time configuration. Using computer simulations we determined the phase structure of the model and discovered that it predicts a de Sitter phase with a four-dimensional spherical semi-classical background geometry. The model has a transfer matrix, relating spatial geometries at adjacent…
Causal dynamical triangulations (CDT) can be used as a regularization of quantum gravity. In two dimensions the theory can be solved anlytically, even before the cut-off is removed and one can study in detail how to take the continuum limit. We show how the CDT theory is related to Euclidean 2d quantum gravity (Liouville quantum gravity), how it can be generalized and how this generalized CDT model has a string field theory representation as well as a matrix model representationof a new kind, and finally how it examplifies the possibility that time in quantum gravity might be the stochastic ti…
We propose that the double scaling behavior of the unitary matrix models, and that of the complex matrix models, is related to type 0B and 0A fermionic string theories. The particular backgrounds involved correspond to $\hat c<1 $ matter coupled to super-Liouville theory. We examine in detail the $\hat c=0$ or pure supergravity case, which is related to the double scaling limit around the Gross-Witten transition, and find that reversing the sign of the Liouville superpotential interchanges the 0A and 0B theories. We also find smooth transitions between weakly coupled string backgrounds with D-…
Tensor models generalize random matrix models in yielding a theory of dynamical triangulations in arbitrary dimensions. Colored tensor models have been shown to admit a 1/N expansion and a continuum limit accessible analytically. In this paper we prove that these results extend to the most general tensor model for a single generic, i.e. non-symmetric, complex tensor. Colors appear in this setting as a canonical book-keeping device and not as a fundamental feature. In the large N limit, we exhibit a set of Virasoro constraints satisfied by the free energy and an infinite family of multicritical…
In this article we report a preliminary investigation of the large $N$ limit of a generalized one-matrix model which represents an $O(n)$ symmetric model on a random lattice. The model on a regular lattice is known to be critical only for $-2\le n\le 2$. This is the situation we shall discuss also here, using steepest descent. We first determine the critical and multicritical points, recovering in particular results previously obtained by Kostov. We then calculate the scaling behaviour in the critical region when the cosmological constant is close to its critical value. Like for the multi-matr…
We establish the universal edge scaling limit of random partitions with the infinite-parameter distribution called the Schur measure. We explore the asymptotic behavior of the wave function, which is a building block of the corresponding kernel, based on the Schr{ö}dinger-type differential equation. We show that the wave function is in general asymptotic to the Airy function and its higher-order analogs in the edge scaling limit. We construct the corresponding higher-order Airy kernel and the Tracy-Widom distribution from the wave function in the scalins limit, and discuss its implication to t…
