We show that for 1+1 dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) coupled to 4 massive scalar fields one can construct an effective transfer matrix if the masses squared is larger than or equal to 0.05. The properties of this transfer matrix can explain why CDT coupled to matter can behave completely different from "pure" CDT. We identify the important critical exponent in the effective action, which may determine the universality class of the model.
Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) provide a non-perturbative formulation of Quantum Gravity assuming the existence of a global time foliation. In our earlier study we analyzed the effect of including $d$ copies of a massless scalar field in the two-dimensional CDT model with imaginary time. For $d > 1$ we observed the formation of a "blob", somewhat similar to that observed in four-dimensional CDT without matter. In the two-dimensional case the "blob" has a Hausdorff dimension $D_H=3$. In this paper we study the spectral dimension $D_S$ of the two-dimensional CDT-universe, both for $d = 0$…
We consider a model of restricted dimers coupled to two-dimensional causal dynamical triangulations (CDT), where the dimer configurations are restricted in the sense that they do not include dimers in regions of high curvature. It is shown how the model can be solved analytically using bijections with decorated trees. At a negative critical value for the dimer fugacity the model undergoes a phase transition at which the critical exponent associated to the geometry changes. This represents the first account of an analytical study of a matter model with two-dimensional interactions coupled to CD…
We review some recent results by Ambjorn et al. (1202.4435) and the authors (1202.4322,1203.5034) in which multicritical points of the CDT matrix model were found and in a particular example identified with a hard dimer model. This identification requires solving the combinatorial problem of counting configurations of dimers on CDTs.
Two-dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations provides a definition of the path integral for projectable two-dimensional Horava-Lifshitz quantum gravity. We solve the theory coupled to gauge fields.
We review a recently obtained analytical solution of a restricted so-called hard dimers model coupled to two-dimensional CDT. The combinatorial solution is obtained via bijections of causal triangulations with dimers and decorated trees. We show that the scaling limit of this model can also be obtained from a multi-critical point of the transfer matrix for dynamical triangulations of triangles and squares when one disallows for spatial topology changes to occur.
We study the geometries generated by two-dimensional causal dynamical triangulations (CDT) coupled to $d$ massless scalar fields. Using methods similar to those used to study four-dimensional CDT we show that there exists a $c=1$ "barrier", analogous to the $c=1$ barrier encountered in non-critical string theory, only the CDT transition is easier to be detected numerically. For $d\leq 1$ we observe time-translation invariance and geometries entirely governed by quantum fluctuations around the uniform toroidal topology put in by hand. For $d>1$ the effective average geometry is no longer toroid…
We study the effective transfer matrix within the semiclassical and bifurcation phases of CDT quantum gravity. We find that for sufficiently large lattice volumes the kinetic term of the effective transfer matrix has a different sign in each of the two phases. We argue that this sign change can be viewed as a Wick rotation of the metric. We discuss the likely microscopic mechanism responsible for the bifurcation phase transition, and propose an order parameter that can potentially be used to determine the precise location and order of the transition. Using the effective transfer matrix we appr…
This contribution reviews some recent results on dimers coupled to CDT. A bijective mapping between dimers and tree-like graphs allows for a simple way to introduce dimers to CDT. This can be generalized further to obtain different multicritcal points.
We study matter with central charge $c >1$ coupled to two-dimensional (2d) quantum gravity, here represented as causal dynamical triangulations (CDT). 2d CDT is known to provide a regularization of (Euclidean) 2d Hořava-Lifshitz quantum gravity. The matter fields are massive Gaussian fields, where the mass is used to monitor the central charge $c$. Decreasing the mass we observe a higher order phase transition between an effective $c=0$ theory and a theory where $c>1$. In this sense the situation is somewhat similar to that observed for "standard" dynamical triangulations (DT) which provide a …
Flatness -- the absence of spacetime curvature -- is a well-understood property of macroscopic, classical spacetimes in general relativity. The same cannot be said about the concepts of curvature and flatness in nonperturbative quantum gravity, where the microscopic structure of spacetime is not describable in terms of small fluctuations around a fixed background geometry. An interesting case are two-dimensional models of quantum gravity, which lack a classical limit and therefore are maximally "quantum". We investigate the recently introduced quantum Ricci curvature in CDT quantum gravity on …
We present a possibility of coupling a point-like, non-singular, mass distribution to four-dimensional quantum gravity in the nonperturbative setting of causal dynamical triangulations (CDT). In order to provide a point of comparison for the classical limit of the matter-coupled CDT model, we derive the spatial volume profile of the Euclidean Schwarzschild-de Sitter space glued to an interior matter solution. The volume profile is calculated with respect to a specific proper-time foliation matching the global time slicing present in CDT. It deviates in a characteristic manner from that of the …
We discuss the algorithmic problem of minimal coupling gauge fields of the Yang-Mills type to Quantum Gravity in the approach known as Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) as a step towards studying, ultimately, systems of gravity coupled with bosonic and fermionic matter. We first describe the algorithm for general dimensions and gauge groups and then focus on the results obtained from simulations of 2d CDT coupled to gauge fields with U{(1)} and SU{(2)} gauge groups, where we studied both observables related to gravity and gauge fields, and compared them with analogous simulations in the st…
We consider the model of hard dimers coupled to two-dimensional Causal Dynamical Triangulations (CDT) with all dimer types present and solve it exactly subject to a single restriction. Depending on the dimer weights there are, in addition to the usual gravity phase of CDT, two tri-critical and two dense dimer phases. We establish the properties of these phases, computing their cylinder and disk amplitudes, and their scaling limits.

Completely from the thermodynamic point of view, we explore the microscopic character of a hairy black hole of Einstein's theory conformally coupled to a scalar field in five dimensions by means of the Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometry. We demonstrate that the scalar hairy black hole has rich microscopic structures in different parameter spaces. Moreover, we analyze the thermal stability of this black hole in detail.
An outstanding challenge for models of non-perturbative quantum gravity is the consistent formulation and quantitative evaluation of physical phenomena in a regime where geometry and matter are strongly coupled. After developing appropriate technical tools, one is interested in measuring and classifying how the quantum fluctuations of geometry alter the behaviour of matter, compared with that on a fixed background geometry. In the simplified context of two dimensions, we show how a method invented to analyze the critical behaviour of spin systems on flat lattices can be adapted to the fluctuat…
The causal structure is a quintessential element of continuum spacetime physics and needs to be properly encoded in a theory of Lorentzian quantum gravity. Established spin foam (and tensorial group field theory (TGFT)) models mostly work with relatively special classes of Lorentzian triangulations (e.g. built from spacelike tetrahedra only), obscuring the explicit implementation of the local causal structure at the microscopic level. We overcome this limitation and construct a full-fledged model for Lorentzian quantum geometry the building blocks of which include spacelike, lightlike and time…
