At the end of 2010, the CERN Large Hadron Collider started operation with heavy ion beams, colliding lead nuclei at a centre-of-mass energy of 2.76 TeV/nucleon and opening a new era in ultra-relativistic heavy ion physics at energies exceeding previous accelerators by more than an order of magnitude. This review summarizes the results from the first year of heavy ion physics at LHC obtained by the three experiments participating in the heavy ion program, ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS.
This work presents the latest results on open heavy-flavour production in proton-proton, proton-lead, lead-lead and xenon-xenon collisions from the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb Collaborations at the LHC.
The measurement of D-meson production in heavy-ion collisions at LHC energy provides insights into the mechanisms of interaction of charm quarks in the hot and dense medium formed in these collisions. ALICE results on the D-meson nuclear modification factor and azimuthal anisotropy in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=2.76$ TeV are presented.
Heavy-flavour quarks are important to probe Quark-Gluon Plasma(QGP) properties. Cold Nuclear Matter(CNM) effects can be accessed by $p$Pb collisions. LHCb is a heavy-flavour precision experiment and has collected large collision data samples. Production cross-section measurements of prompt $D^{0}$ at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$= 5 TeV and $J/ψ$ at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$= 8.16 TeV are presented.
Heavy flavor production is important in heavy ion collisions to study both cold and hot nuclear matter effects. The LHCb experiment can make unique contribution to heavy ion physics, owing to the full particle identification of the detector in the forward region and the ability to collect fixed target data with proton or lead beams. This report describes recent results with proton-lead collision data collected in 2013 and the prospect of heavy-ion studies at LHCb.
Results on open heavy-flavour production in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 2.76 TeV measured with ALICE at the LHC are presented. The nuclear modification factors, extracted in three different channels, show a strong suppression in central collisions. The measured D-meson azimuthal anisotropy indicates a non-zero v2, which is similar to the one of charged hadrons.
Vector bosons become accessible experimental probes in heavy-ion collisions at the LHC. The capabilities of the LHC experiments to perform their measurement are outlined. The focus is given to their utility to study the possible formation and properties of the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) in the most central heavy-ion collisions. Their own sensitivity (if any) to the QGP is discussed. Their interest as references to observe multiple QGP sensitive probes is justified.
We report the recent measurements of the inclusive J/ψ production in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 2.76 TeV, in pp collisions at \sqrt{s} = 7 TeV and in Pb-Pb collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The J/ψ mesons are detected down to pT = 0 GeV/c via their di-muon decay channel at forward rapidity (2.5 < y < 4) and via their di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity (|y| < 0.9). A special emphasis is put on the nuclear modification factor which is compared to the predictions of current J/ψ production models.
The transverse momentum distribution for inclusive neutral pions in very forward rapidity region has been measured with the LHCf detector in p-Pb collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at the LHC. The transverse momentum spectra obtained in p-Pb collisions show a strong suppression of the production of neutral pions relative to the spectra in p-p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV. The nuclear modification factor is about 0.1-0.4, which overall agrees with the predictions of several hadronic interaction Monte Carlo simulations. Furthermore the rece…
The self-normalised $ψ(2S)$ yields as a function of charged-particle multiplicity in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV and p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$= 8.16 TeV, using the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC, are reported in these proceedings. This measurement represents one of the main tools to understand the role of multiparton interactions and their influence on charmonium production in small systems, i.e pp and pA collisions. The ratio of $ψ(2S)$-over-J/$ψ$ as a function of charged-particle multiplicity is also presented for both pp and p--Pb collisions. The comparison to th…
Proton-lead and lead-proton data taking during 2013 has allowed LHCb to expand its physics program to heavy ion physics. Results include the first forward measurement of Z production in proton-lead collisions as well as a measurement of the nuclear modification factor and forward-backward production of prompt and displaced J/$ψ$, $ψ$(2S) and $Υ$. Angular particle correlations have also been measured for events of varying charged particle activity.
We present here recent open heavy-flavour results from the ALICE experiment, including measurements of D-meson, $\mathrm{Λ_{c}^{+}}$ baryon and $\mathrm{Ξ_c^0}$ baryon production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7~\mathrm{TeV}$ and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = 5.02~\mathrm{TeV}$.
We present the recent results for D-meson production measured by the ALICE collaboration in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV, Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=2.76$ TeV and p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=5.02$ TeV.
Reference cross sections have been measured with the ALICE detector in both pp and Pb-Pb collisions, in dedicated luminosity calibration experiments (van der Meer scans) at the LHC. The results and their uncertainties are discussed, together with a few selected applications.
In November 2010 the ALICE experiment at CERN has collected the first Pb--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV produced by the LHC. A first characterization of the hot and dense state of matter produced in this new energy domain became available shortly after the run. In this paper we present the results on charged-particle multiplicity, Bose-Einstein correlations, elliptic flow and their dependence on the collision centrality. Results from first measurements of strange and identified particle production and suppression of high-momentum hadrons with respect to $pp$ collisions are also r…
Relativistic heavy-ion collisions provide a unique opportunity to search for parity violation in non-central collisions. This could lead to charge separation perpendicular to the reaction plane. An event-by-event measurement of charge separation effect in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV using Sliding Dumbbell Method (SDM) is discussed in this article.
The ALICE experiment at the CERN LHC has conducted first systematic studies of heavy-flavour hadron production in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV and in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 2.76 TeV. In pp collisions the differential production cross sections of D mesons at mid-rapidity, as well as the cross sections for electrons and muons from semileptonic heavy-flavour hadron decays at mid- and forward-rapidity, respectively, have been measured. These data provide a crucial testing ground for perturbative QCD calculations in the new LHC energy regime. In Pb-Pb collisions, the nuclear modificat…
The measurements of open heavy-flavours, i.e. D mesons at central rapidity and leptons from charm and beauty decays at central and forward rapidity was studied in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV using the ALICE detector. The results are presented and compared to model predictions including cold nuclear matter effects.
In this work we investigate the exclusive photoproduction of J/psi and the radially excited psi(2S) state off nucleon in proton-proton collisions. The theoretical framework considered in the analysis is the light-cone dipole formalism and predictions are done for proton-proton collisions at the CERN-LHC energy of 7 TeV. The theoretical uncertainties are investigated and comparison is done to the recent LHCb Collaboration data for the exclusive charmonium production.
The generic features of parton energy loss effects on the quenching of single hadron spectra in heavy-ion collisions are discussed, paying attention to the expected differences from RHIC to LHC. The need for precise baseline measurements in p-Pb collisions at the LHC is also emphasized. Finally I briefly mention the production of prompt photons in heavy-ion collisions as well as some open questions.
The potential of the ALICE, ATLAS, CMS and LHCb detectors for the measurement of quarkonium in heavy-ion collisions, both in nucleus-nucleus (A-A) and in proton-nucleus (p-A) interactions, in the years 2015 until about 2030 in the LHC Runs 2, 3 and 4 with larger statistics and detector upgrades is described. A selection of newly available observables is discussed.
Heavy flavor productions are important tests of QCD. In proton-proton collisions collected at LHCb, a long list of measurements for charm and bottom productions have been made. This talk focuses on the studies of fragmentation functions and production asymmetries for bottom hadrons. They provide inputs for absolute branching fraction measurements and CP violation studies at LHCb respectively.
We present and compare the predictions of various cosmic-ray Monte Carlo models for the energy (dE/deta) and particle (dN/deta) flows in p-p, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s) = 14, 8.8, and 5.5 TeV respectively, in the range covered by forward LHC detectors like CASTOR or TOTEM (5.2<|eta|<6.6) and ZDC or LHCf (|eta|>8.1 for neutrals).
The exclusive $ρ$, $ω$ and $J/Ψ$ photoproduction in fixed - target collisions at the LHC is investigated. We estimate, for the first time, the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions of the vector meson photoproduction in $p He$, $p Ar$, $Pb He$ and $Pb Ar$ fixed - target collisions at the LHC using the STARlight Monte Carlo and present our results for the total cross sections. Predictions for the kinematical range probed by the LHCb detector are also presented. Our results indicate that the experimental analysis of this process in fixed - target collisions at the LHC is feasible. Such …
An overview of ALICE results on the measurement of J/ψ production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 7 TeV collected during the LHC Run-1 period is presented, as well as first results at forward rapidity from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected during the LHC Run-2 period. In particular, the measurement of J/ψ production as a function of transverse momentum and charged-particle multiplicity are discussed and compared to theoretical model calculations.
Results on open heavy-flavour production in p-p collisions at sqrt{s} = 7 and 2.76 TeV measured with ALICE at the LHC are presented. Open heavy flavour production is studied using semileptonic decays to electrons and muons and, for open charm states (D0, D+, D* and Ds) at central rapidity, also from exclusive hadronic decay channels.
The exclusive $Υ$ photoproduction in proton-proton and proton - nucleus collisions at LHC energies is investigated using the color dipole formalism and considering different models for the $Υ$ wave function and forward dipole - target scattering amplitude. Our goal is to update the color dipole predictions and estimate the theoretical uncertainty present in these predictions. We present predictions for the kinematical ranges probed by the ALICE, CMS and LHCb Collaborations.
We provide, within the hydrokinetic model, a detailed investigation of kaon interferometry in $Pb+Pb$ collisions at LHC energy ($\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV). Predictions are presented for 1D interferometry radii of $K^0_SK^0_S$ and $K^{\pm}K^{\pm}$ pairs as well as for 3D femtoscopy scales in out, side and long directions. The results are compared with existing pion interferometry radii. We also make predictions for full LHC energy.
The proton-proton ($pp$) collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), CERN, Switzerland has brought up new challenges and opportunities in understanding the experimental findings in contrast to the conventional lower energy $pp$ collisions. Usually $pp$ collisions are used as the baseline measurement at the GeV and TeV energies in order to understand a possible high density QCD medium formation in heavy-ion collisions. However, the TeV $pp$ collisions have created a new domain of research, where scientists have started observing heavy-ion-like features (signatures) in high-multiplicity $pp$ …
This is the summary document of the virtual workshop "Opportunities of OO and $p$O collisions at the LHC", which took place Feb 4-10, 2021. We briefly review the presented perspectives on the physics opportunities of oxygen--oxygen and proton--oxygen collisions. The full workshop program and the recordings are available at cern.ch/OppOatLHC.
The concept of centrality in high-energy nuclear collisions has recently become a subject of an active debate. In particular, the experimental methods to determine the centrality that have given reasonable results for many observables in high-energy lead-lead collisions at the LHC have led to surprising behaviour in the case of proton-lead collisions. In this letter, we discuss the possibility to calibrate the experimental determination of centrality by asymmetries caused by mutually different spatial distributions of protons and neutrons inside the nuclei --- a well-known phenomenon in nuclea…
The study of the sphericity of primary charged particles in minimum bias proton-proton collisions at 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC is presented. The mean sphericity as a function of multiplicity is reported for events with different hardness. The ALICE results show a growing transverse sphericity with multiplicity for all collision energies, with a steeper rise at low multiplicity. The tendency of the MC generators is opposite at high multiplicity.
The first collisions of lead nuclei, delivered by the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the end of 2010, at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV, marked the beginning of a new era in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion physics. Following the Run 1 period, LHC also successfully delivered PbPb collisions at the collision energy $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at the end of 2015. The study of the properties of the produced hot and dense strongly-interacting matter at these unprecedented energies is experimentally pursued by all four big LHC experiments, ALICE, ATLAS, CMS, and…
The ALICE detector is introduced and a double gap trigger is presented. The interest in studying double pomeron induced events both in proton-proton and in lead-lead reactions is discussed.
We investigate the potentialities offered by the study of J/psi exclusive photo-production in ultra-peripheral collisions at a fixed-target experiment using the proton and lead LHC beams (generically denoted as AFTER@LHC) on hydrogen targets and at RHIC in the collider mode. We compare the expected counting rates in both set-ups. Studying Single-Transverse-Spin Asymmetries (A_N) in such a process provides a direct path to the proton Generalised Parton Distribution (GPD) E_g(x,xi,t). We evaluate the expected precision on A_N for realistic conditions with the LHCb detector in pH(pol) and PbH(pol…
The recent results in \sqrt{s}=2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) reported by the ALICE collaboration shows that the power-law energy-dependence of charged hadron multiplicity in Pb+Pb collisions is significantly different from p+p collisions. We show that this different energy-dependence can be explained by inclusion of a strong angular-ordering in the gluon-decay cascade within the Color-Glass-Condensate (or gluon saturation) approach. This effect is more important in nucleus-nucleus collisions where the saturation scale is larger than 1 GeV. Our prescription gives …
The rapidity dependent transverse momentum spectra of heavy quarkonia (J/psi and Upsilon mesons) produced in small collision systems such as proton-proton (pp) and proton-lead (p-Pb) collisions at center-of-mass energy (per nucleon pair) 5-13 TeV are described by a two-component statistical model which is based on the Tsallis statistics and inverse power-law. The experimental data measured by the LHCb Collaboration at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) are well fitted by the model results. The related parameters are obtained and the dependences of parameters on rapidity are analyzed.
Intense and collimated neutrino beams are produced by charm and beauty particle decays from proton-proton collisions at the LHC. A neutrino experiment would be run parasitically without interrupting the LHC physics program during the collider run. We estimate the neutrino fluxes from proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=14$ TeV of the LHC with the designed luminosity, $10^{34} \lumi$. By mounting about 200 tons of fiducial volume of a neutrino detector at 300 $\m$ away from the interaction point, about 150,000 of charged current neutrino events per year can be observable.
In this paper we present a detailed analysis of the contribution of the Light -- by -- Light (LbL), Durham and double diffractive processes for the diphoton production in ultraperipheral $PbPb$ collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), High -- Energy LHC (HE -- LHC) and Future Circular Collider (FCC). The acceptance of the central and forward LHC detectors is taken into account and predictions for the invariant mass, rapidity, transverse momentum and acoplanarity distributions are presented. Our results indicate that the contribution of the Durham and double diffractive processes can be s…
In this contribution we report on the investigations of the exclusive production of J/psi and psi(2S) states in proton-proton and nucleus-nucleus reactions at the LHC using the theoretical framework of light-cone dipole formalism.
We report on the current status of knowledge on inclusive quarkonium production in high-energy photon-photon collisions. As a perspective for the LHC, we compute various production cross sections via direct photon-photon fusion in ultra-peripheral pp, pA and AA collisions at the LHC using the tree-level quarkonium amplitude generator MadOnia.
The coherent and incoherent $J/Ψ$ photoproduction in $PbPb$ collisions are investigated considering the possible states of nucleon configurations in the nuclear wave function and taking into account of the non - linear corrections to the QCD dynamics. The cross sections and the rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are estimated for the energies of the next run of the LHC, High -- Energy LHC and Future Circular Collider. Our results indicate that a future experimental analysis of these processes will be useful to discriminate between different approaches for the QCD dynamics as well t…
In these proceedings we use recent LHC heavy-ion data to set a limit on axion-like particles coupling to electromagnetism with mass in the range 10-100 GeV. We recast ATLAS data as per the strategy proposed in 1607.06083, and find results in-line with the projections given there.
We argue that already the first year run at the LHC with 3.5 TeV proton beams will provide a quick and effective way to test the dynamics of the color dipole-gluon interactions and the small x behavior of the gluon density in proton from study of the vector meson photoproduction in ultraperipheral proton-proton collisions.
The ALICE muon spectrometer studies the production of quarkonia and open heavy- flavour particles. It is equipped with a Trigger System composed of Resistive Plate Chambers which, by applying a transverse-momentum-based muon selection, minimises the background from light-hadron decays. The system has been continuously taking data throughout the LHC Run I; it has undergone maintenance and consolidation operations during the LHC shutdown period 1. In the first year of the LHC Run II, the system, fully recommissioned, has participated in data taking in pp and Pb/en-dashPb collisions. The performa…
We provide quantitative predictions for the rapidity, centrality and energy dependencies of inclusive charged-hadron productions for the forthcoming LHC measurements in nucleus-nucleus collisions based on the idea of gluon saturation in the color-glass condensate framework. Our formulation gives very good descriptions of the first data from the LHC for the inclusive charged-hadron production in proton-proton collisions, the deep inelastic scattering at HERA at small Bjorken-x, and the hadron multiplicities in nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC.
We study the photoproduction of exclusive $2π^+2π^-$ mesons in ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. Predictions in photon-nucleus interactions are calculated for various resonances at central and forward rapidities. The recent H1 preliminary data are utilized to improve the description of the poorly known $γp \to 4π^\pm p$ process. We present the comparisons of our results to the available STAR data at RHIC, and made predictions for LHC energies.
The recent LHC data have once more brought the issue of the formation of thermalized state of matter in hadron-hadron collisions into the forefront. In this letter, we have shown that the scaling of the information entropy of the chaotically produced particles is valid up to recently available data from p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 2.36 TeV obtained by ALICE experiment. We predict that at the highest energies projected for LHC, almost all the particles will be produced chaotically, indicating that a collective behavior should be observed in hadronic collisions, as indicated by one of present…
Hadron production is investigated in proton-proton (pp) collisions at \surds = 7 TeV LHC energy - especially outside the cones of identified jets. We improved the original CDF definition of underlying event and introduce surrounding rings/belts (SB) around the cone of identified jets. We compare the characteristics of hadron production using the original CDF-based and the new SB-based via analysing PYTHIA generated fluxes of these hadrons within the geometrical regions of pp collisions.
The ATLAS experiment has successfully recorded over 300 nb^-1 of pp collisions at 7 TeV provided by the Large Hadron Collider, with an efficiency of 94%. We describe the data acquisition, trigger, reconstruction, calibration, monitoring, and luminosity measurement infrastructure that have made this possible.
An analysis of prompt photon production in high energy nuclear collisions at the LHC energy regime is performed within the parton saturation picture taking into account the updated phenomenological color dipole models. The results are confronted with the measurements made by the ALICE, ATLAS, and CMS experiments in terms of photon transverse momentum at different rapidity bins. As a result, we show that the prompt photon production exhibits distinct scalings in $AA$ events associated to geometrical properties of the collision and can be properly addressed in the color dipole formalism.
We provide predictions for the nuclear modification factor R_{pA} for pions and direct photon production in p+A collisions at LHC energy at midrapidity within different saturation models fitted to HERA data. In our approach we have no free parameters to adjust and all model parameters are fitted to other reactions. Our approach gives a rather good description of PHENIX data for R_{pA} for pions. We show that, in various saturation models, the pion Cronin enhancement is replaced by a moderate suppression at LHC energy at midrapidity due to gluon shadowing effects. However, Cronin enhancement of…
We calculate the inclusive spectra of secondaries produced in soft (minimum bias) p+Pb collisions in the framework of Quark-Gluon String Model at LHC energy, and by taking into account the inelastic screening corrections (percolation effects). The role of these effects is expected to be very large at very high energies, and they should decrease the spectra about 3 times in the midrapidity region and increase them about 2 times in the fragmentation region at the energy of LHC.
Prevalent models of multi-particle production in relativistic pp collisions at pre-LHC energies, fail to provide convincing explanations to certain significant features of the final-state charged particles in high-multiplicity pp events at the LHC. This article presents a study, contrasting those features, usually interpreted as collective behaviour of particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, in the framework of hydrodynamic EPOS3 model, emphasizing quantitative comparison between the data and the model-based simulation in the same kinematic ranges, for better cognizance of th…
We show that the key features of the CMS result on the ridge correlation seen for high multiplicity events in sqrt(s)=7TeV proton-proton collisions at the LHC can be understood in the Color Glass Condensate framework of high energy QCD. The same formalism underlies the explanation of the ridge events seen in A+A collisions at RHIC, albeit it is likely that flow effects may enhance the magnitude of the signal in the latter.
In this paper we perform a systematic study of the exclusive dilepton production by $γγ$ interactions in $PbPb$ collisions at the LHC Run 2 energies considering different levels of precision for the treatment of the absorptive corrections and for the nuclear form factor. The rapidity and invariant mass distributions are estimated taking into account the experimental cutoffs and a comparison with the recent ALICE and ATLAS data for the $e^+ e^-$ and $μ^+ μ^-$ production is presented.
