If the present dark matter in the Universe annihilates into Standard Model particles, it must contribute to the gamma ray fluxes detected on the Earth. Here we briefly review the present constraints for the detection of gamma ray photons produced in the annihilation of branon dark matter. We show that observations of dwarf spheroidal galaxies and the galactic center by EGRET, Fermi-LAT or MAGIC are below the sensitivity limits for branon detection. However, future experiments such as CTA could be able to detect gamma-ray photons from annihilating branons of masses above 150 GeV.
One of the most pressing questions for modern physics is the nature of dark matter (DM). Several efforts have been made to model this elusive kind of matter. The largest fraction of DM cannot be made of any of the known particles of the Standard Model (SM). We focus on brane world theory as a prospective framework for DM candidates beyond the SM of particle physics. The new degrees of freedom that appear in flexible brane world models, corresponding to brane fluctuations, are called branons. They behave as weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs), which are one of the most favored candidat…
We present the first branon dark matter (DM) search in the very high-energy gamma-ray band with observations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Segue~1 carried out by the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescope system. Branons are new degrees of freedom that appear in flexible brane-world models corresponding to brane fluctuations. They behave as weakly interacting massive particles, which are natural DM candidates. In the absence of a gamma-ray signal in the Segue~1 data, we place constraints on the branon DM parameter space by using a binned likelihood analysis. Our most cons…
We present the first search for signatures of brane-world extra-dimensional dark matter (DM) in the very-high-energy gamma-ray band by scrutinizing observations of the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Segue 1 with the Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) telescope system. Branons are new degrees of freedom that appear within flexible brane-world models: they are weakly interacting massive particles and natural DM candidates. The ground-based gamma-ray telescopes MAGIC could indirectly detect branon DM in the multi-TeV mass range by observing secondary products of DM annihilation into Stand…
In the absence of a clear hint of dark matter (DM) signals in the GeV regime so far, heavy, $\mathcal{O}$(TeV) DM candidates are gradually earning more and more attention within the community. Among others, extra-dimensional \textit{brane-world} models may produce thermal DM candidates with masses up to 100 TeV. These heavy DM candidates could be detected with the next generation of very-high-energy gamma-ray observatories such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA). In this work, we study the sensitivity of CTA to branon DM via the observation of representative astrophysical DM targets, namel…
Weak-scale secluded sector dark matter can reproduce the observed dark matter relic density with thermal freeze-out within that sector. If nature is supersymmetric, three portals to the visible sector - a gauge portal, a Higgs portal, and a gaugino portal - are present. We present gamma ray spectra relevant for indirect detection of dark matter annihilation in such setups. Since symmetries in the secluded sector can stabilize dark matter, $R$-parity is unnecessary, and we investigate the impact of $R$-parity violation on annihilation spectra. We present limits from the Fermi Large Area Telesco…
We present DarkFlux, a software tool designed to analyze indirect-detection signatures for next-generation models of dark matter (DM) with multiple annihilation channels. Version 1.0 of this tool accepts user-generated models with $2\to 2$ tree-level dark matter annihilation to pairs of Standard Model (SM) particles and analyzes DM annihilation to $γ$ rays. The tool consists of three modules -- the annihilation fraction module, the flux module, and the analysis module -- which can be run in a loop in order to scan over DM mass if desired. [A description of each module is available in the full …
We propose that the nature of indirect signals of dark matter (DM) can depend on the Galactic environment they originate from. We demonstrate this possibility in models where DM annihilates into light mediators whose branching fractions depend on a long range force sourced by ordinary matter. In particular, electromagnetic signals of DM may only arise near the centers of galaxies where the ordinary matter densities, and hence astrophysical background levels, are high. We briefly discuss how our model could explain the Galactic Center gamma ray excess, without leaving much of a trace in baryon-…
These lectures, presented at the 2021 Les Houches Summer School on Dark Matter, provide an introduction to key methods and tools of indirect dark matter searches, as well as a status report on the field circa summer 2021. Topics covered include the possible effects of energy injection from dark matter on the early universe, methods to calculate both the expected energy distribution and spatial distribution of particles produced by dark matter interactions, an outline of theoretical models that predict diverse signals in indirect detection, and a discussion of current constraints and some claim…
Dark Matter can form bound states upon the emission of quanta of energy equal to the binding energy. The rate of this process is large for strongly-interacting Dark Matter, and further enhanced by long distance effects. The resulting monochromatic and diffuse $γ$-rays can be tested in indirect detection experiments. If Dark Matter has electroweak charge, indirect signals include multiple observable photon lines for masses in the TeV range. Else if it couples only via a dark photon portal, diffuse spectra from dwarf galaxies and CMB reionization set powerful limits for masses below a TeV. This …

We study high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations of Milky Way type galaxies obtained within the "Evolution and Assembly of GaLaxies and their Environments" (EAGLE) project, and identify the those that best satisfy observational constraints on the Milky Way total stellar mass, rotation curve, and galaxy shape. Contrary to mock galaxies selected on the basis of their total virial mass, the Milky Way analogues so identified consistently exhibit very similar dark matter profiles inside the solar circle, therefore enabling more accurate predictions for indirect dark matter searches. We find in par…
We consider the search for gamma-rays produced by the annihilation or decay of low-mass dark matter which couples to quarks. In this scenario, most of the photons are produced from the decays of $π^0$ or $η$ mesons. These decays produce distinctly different photon signatures due to the difference in meson mass. We assess the ability of the future MeV-range observatories to constrain the hadronic final states produced by dark matter annihilation or decay from the shape of the resulting photon spectrum. We then comment on how this information can be used to determine properties of the dark matte…
