A class of cosmological solutions of higher dimensional Einstein field equations with the energy-momentum tensor of a homogeneous, isotropic fluid as the source are considered with an anisotropic metric that includes the direct sum of a 3-dimensional (physical, flat) external space metric and an n-dimensional (compact, flat) internal space metric. A simple kinematical constraint is postulated that correlates the expansion rates of the external and internal spaces in terms of a real parameter λ. A specific solution for which both the external and internal spaces expand at different rates is given analytically for n=3. Assuming that the internal dimensions were at Planck length scales when the external space starts with a Big Bang (t=0), they expand only 1.49 times and stay at Planck length scales even in the present age of the universe (13.7 Gyr). The effective four dimensional universe would exhibit a behavior consistent with our current understanding of the observed universe. It would start in a stiff fluid dominated phase and evolve through radiation dominated and pressureless matter dominated phases, eventually going into a de Sitter phase at late times.
We study the $Λ(α)$CDM models with $Λ(α)$ being a function of the time-varying fine structure constant $α$. We give a close look at the constraints on two specific $Λ(α)$CDM models with one and two model parameters, respectively, based on the cosmological observational measurements along with 313 data points for the time-varying $α$. We find that the model parameters are constrained to be around $10^{-4}$, which are similar to the results discussed previously but more accurately.
A type of exponential correction to General Relativity gives viable modified gravity model of dark energy. The model behaves as $R-2Λ$ at large curvature where an effective cosmological constant appears, but it becomes zero in flat space time. The cosmic evolution of the main density parameters is consistent with current observations. The thin shell conditions for the Solar system were analyzed. Apart from satisfying cosmological and local gravity restrictions, the model may also show measurable differences with $Λ$CDM at recent times. The current value of the deviation parameter $m$ for scale…
We analyze Brans-Dicke gravity with a cosmological constant, $Λ$, and cold dark matter (BD-$Λ$CDM for short) in the light of the latest cosmological observations on distant supernovae, Hubble rate measurements at different redshifts, baryonic acoustic oscillations, large scale structure formation data, gravitational weak-lensing and the cosmic microwave background under full Planck 2015 CMB likelihood. Our analysis includes both the background and perturbations equations. We find that BD-$Λ$CDM is observationally favored as compared to the concordance $Λ$CDM model, which is traditionally defin…
The Galileon theory belongs to the class of modified gravity models that can explain the late-time accelerated expansion of the Universe. In previous works, cosmological constraints on the Galileon model were derived, both in the uncoupled case and with a disformal coupling of the Galileon field to matter. There, we showed that these models agree with the most recent cosmological data. In this work, we used updated cosmological data sets to derive new constraints on Galileon models, including the case of a constant conformal Galileon coupling to matter. We also explored the tracker solution of…
We place observational constraints on the Galileon ghost condensate model, a dark energy proposal in cubic-order Horndeski theories consistent with the gravitational-wave event GW170817. The model extends the covariant Galileon by taking an additional higher-order field derivative $X^2$ into account. This allows for the dark energy equation of state $w_{\rm DE}$ to access the region $-2<w_{\rm DE}<-1$ without ghosts. Indeed, this peculiar evolution of $w_{\rm DE}$ is favored over that of the cosmological constant $Λ$ from the joint data analysis of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, …
We perform a detailed comparison between the Logotropic model [P.H. Chavanis, Eur. Phys. J. Plus 130 (2015) 130] and the $Λ$CDM model. These two models behave similarly at large (cosmological) scales up to the present. Differences will appear only in the far future, in about $25\, {\rm Gyrs}$, when the Logotropic Universe becomes phantom while the $Λ$CDM Universe enters in the de Sitter era. However, the Logotropic model differs from the $Λ$CDM model at small (galactic) scales, where the latter encounters serious problems. Having a nonvanishing pressure, the Logotropic model can solve the cusp…
Since physics of the dark sector components of the Universe is not yet well-understood, the phenomenological studies of non-minimal interaction in the dark sector could possibly pave the way to theoretical and experimental progress in this direction. Therefore, in this work, we intend to explore some features and consequences of a phenomenological interaction in the dark sector. We use the Planck 2018, BAO, JLA, KiDS and HST data to investigate two extensions of the base $Λ$CDM model, viz., (i) we allow the interaction among vacuum energy and dark matter, namely the I$Λ$CDM model, wherein the …
In this work, which follows a series of studies on the higher-dimensional steady state universe idea and prepared for Professor Tekin Dereli's Festschrift, we show the influence of the dynamical internal (unobservable) space on the evolution of the possible anisotropy of the external (observable) space. We obtain mathematically exactly the same Friedmann equation of the standard $Λ$CDM model for the external space, but with some remarkable physical differences. In particular, the higher-dimensional negative cosmological constant plays the role of the four-dimensional positive cosmological cons…
We use the physically-consistent tilted spatially-flat and untilted non-flat $Λ$CDM inflation models to constrain cosmological parameter values with the Planck 2015 cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy data and recent Type Ia supernovae measurements, baryonic acoustic oscillations (BAO) data, growth rate observations, and Hubble parameter measurements. The most dramatic consequence of including the four non-CMB data sets is the significant strengthening of the evidence for non-flatness in the non-flat $Λ$CDM model, from 1.8$σ$ for the CMB data alone to 5.1$σ$ for the full data combinat…
In this work we derive state-of-the-art model-independent constraints on cosmology from SN Ia by measuring purely kinematical $\left( q,j \right)$ model parameters (where $q$ and $j$ are related to the first and second derivative of the Hubble parameter). For the JLA compilation of SN Ia an agreement within 2$σ$ of $Λ$CDM expectations is found, where best-fitting kinematical parameters are $q=-0.66 \pm 0.11$ and $j=0.41 ^{+0.32}_{-0.33}$. With $q=-0.73 \pm 0.13$ and $j=0.76 ^{+0.41}_{-0.43}$ the Pantheon sample shows even better agreement with the $Λ$CDM expectation of $j=1$ than JLA, hinting …
We consider a generic description of interacting dynamical Dark Energy, characterized by an equation of state with a time dependent coefficient $w(t)$, and which may interact with both radiation and matter. Without referring to any particular cosmological model, we find a differential equation which must be satisfied by $w(t)$ and involving the function $Q(t)$ which describes the interaction between Dark Energy and the other cosmological fluids. The relation we find represents a constraint for various models of interacting dynamical Dark Energy. In addition, an observable is proposed, dependin…
We study the performance of three pairs of tilted $Λ$CDM cosmological models, two pairs allowing for non-flat spatial hypersurfaces with CMB temperature and polarization power spectrum data (P18) from Planck, P18 lensing (lensing), and non-CMB data (non-CMB). For the six models, we measure cosmological parameters and study whether or not pairs of the data sets are mutually consistent in these models. Half of these models allow the lensing consistency parameter $A_L$ to be an additional free parameter, while the other three have $A_L = 1$. The tilted spatially-flat models assume the usual primo…
We investigate the cosmological perturbations in the context of a Scalar-Tensor-Vector theory of Gravity known as MOG in the literature. Recent investigations show that MOG reproduces a viable background cosmological evolution comparable to $Λ$CDM. However, the matter-dominated era is slightly different. In this paper, we study the linear matter perturbations and estimate the relevant modified gravity parameters. We show that MOG reduces the growth rate of the perturbations and comparing with the RSD data reveals that MOG suggests a higher value for $σ_8$, compare to $Λ$CDM. This point, consti…
Everpresent $Λ$ is a cosmological scenario in which the observed cosmological "constant" $Λ$ fluctuates between positive and negative values with a vanishing mean, and with a magnitude comparable to the critical density at any epoch. In accord with a longstanding heuristic prediction of causal set theory, it postulates that $Λ$ is a stochastic function of cosmic time that will vary from one realization of the scenario to another. Herein, we consider two models of "dark energy" that exhibit these features. Via Monte Carlo Markov chains, we explore the space of cosmological parameters and the se…
We present an analysis of the Brans-Dicke cosmological model with a cosmological constant and cold dark matter (BD-$Λ$CDM). We find that the BD-$Λ$CDM is favored by the overall cosmological data (SNIa+BAO+$H(z)$+LSS+CMB) when it is compared with the standard model of cosmology. The BD-$Λ$CDM model can be viewed from the GR perspective as a Running Vacuum Model (RVM) with a time evolving vacuum energy density. Due to this fact and also to its time evolving effective gravitational coupling, the model can alleviate the $σ_8$ and the $H_0$ tensions at a time. We also present the results for differ…
In this study, we investigate the effect of the generalized uncertainty principle on the $Λ$CDM cosmological model. Using quantum corrected Unruh effect and Verlinde's entropic gravity idea, we find Planck-scale corrected Friedmann equations with a cosmological constant. These results modify the $Λ$CDM cosmology.
We study the relativistic dynamics of a pressure-less and irrotational fluid of dark matter (CDM) with a cosmological constant ($Λ$), up to second order in cosmological perturbation theory. In our analysis we also account for vector and tensor perturbations and include primordial non-Gaussianity. We consider three gauges: the synchronous-comoving gauge, the Poisson gauge and the total matter gauge, where the first is the unique relativistic Lagrangian frame of reference, and the latters are convenient gauge choices for Eulerian frames. Our starting point is the metric and fluid variables in th…
We investigate how the properties of dark energy affect the cosmological measurements of neutrino mass and extra relativistic degrees of freedom. We limit ourselves to the most basic extensions of $Λ$ cold dark matter (CDM) model, i.e. the $w$CDM model with one additional parameter $w$, and the $w_{0}w_{a}$CDM model with two additional parameters, $w_{0}$ and $w_{a}$. In the cosmological fits, we employ the 2015 cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization data from the Planck mission, in combination with low-redshift measurements such as the baryon acoustic oscillations, Type Ia s…
In the present paper, we are considering a spatially-flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmological model, fueled with stiff matter and dust, treated as non-interacting ideal fluid sources. By solving the corresponding Friedmann equation with a non-zero cosmological constant, we are deriving the scale function and the fundamental cosmological parameters. Within a thermodynamic approach, the general form of the Equation of State is obtained, together with the explicit dependence of the energy density and pressure on temperature.
Recent anomalies found in cosmological datasets such as the low multipoles of the Cosmic Microwave Background or the low redshift amplitude and growth of clustering measured by e.g., abundance of galaxy clusters and redshift space distortions in galaxy surveys, have motivated explorations of models beyond standard $Λ$CDM. Of particular interest are models where general relativity (GR) is modified on large cosmological scales. Here we consider deviations from $Λ$CDM+GR within the context of Horndeski gravity, which is the most general theory of gravity with second derivatives in the equations o…

We present a full-fledged analysis of Brans-Dicke cosmology with a cosmological constant and cold dark matter (BD-$Λ$CDM for short). We extend the scenarios where the current cosmological value of the BD-field is restricted by the local astrophysical domain to scenarios where that value is fixed only by the cosmological observations, which should be more natural in view of the possible existence of local screening mechanims. Our analysis includes both the background and perturbations equations in different gauges. We find that the BD-$Λ$CDM is favored by the overall cosmological data as compar…
Yes, but only for a parameter value that makes it almost coincide with the standard model. We reconsider the cosmological dynamics of a generalized Chaplygin gas (gCg) which is split into a cold dark matter (CDM) part and a dark energy (DE) component with constant equation of state. This model, which implies a specific interaction between CDM and DE, has a $Λ$CDM limit and provides the basis for studying deviations from the latter. Including matter and radiation, we use the (modified) CLASS code \cite{class} to construct the CMB and matter power spectra in order to search for a gCg-based conco…

In view of the recent measurement of $H_{0}$ from HST and SH0ES team, we explore the possibility of existence of a negative cosmological constant (AdS vacua in the dark energy sector) in the Universe. In this regard, we consider quintessence fields on top of a negative cosmological constant and compare such construction with $Λ$CDM model using a different combination of CMB, SnIa, BAO and $H_{0}$ data. Various model comparison estimators show that quintessence models with a negative $Λ$ is either preferred over $Λ$CDM or performs equally as $Λ$CDM model. This suggests that the presence of a ne…
