Since physics of the dark sector components of the Universe is not yet well-understood, the phenomenological studies of non-minimal interaction in the dark sector could possibly pave the way to theoretical and experimental progress in this direction. Therefore, in this work, we intend to explore some features and consequences of a phenomenological interaction in the dark sector. We use the Planck 2018, BAO, JLA, KiDS and HST data to investigate two extensions of the base $Λ$CDM model, viz., (i) we allow the interaction among vacuum energy and dark matter, namely the I$Λ$CDM model, wherein the interaction strength is proportional to the vacuum energy density and expansion rate of the Universe, and (ii) the I$Λ$CDM scenario with free effective neutrino mass and number, namely the $ν$I$Λ$CDM model. We also present comparative analyses of the interaction models with the companion models, namely, $Λ$CDM, $νΛ$CDM, $w$CDM and $νw$CDM. In both the interaction models, we find non-zero coupling in the dark sector up to 99\% CL with energy transfer from dark matter to vacuum energy, and observe a phantom-like behavior of the effective dark energy without actual ``phantom crossing". The well-known tensions on the cosmological parameters $H_0$ and $σ_8$, prevailing within the $Λ$CDM cosmology, are relaxed significantly in these models wherein the $ν$I$Λ$CDM model shows consistency with the standard effective neutrino mass and number. Both the interaction models find a better fit to the combined data compared to the companion models under consideration.
Braneworld models with induced gravity exhibit phantom-like behaviour of the effective equation of state of dark energy. They can, therefore, naturally accommodate higher values of $H_0$, preferred by recent local measurements, while satisfying the CMB constraints. We test the background evolution in such phantom braneworld scenarios with the current observational datasets. We find that the phantom braneworld prefers a higher value of $H_0$ even without the R19 prior, thereby providing a much better fit to the local measurements. Although this braneworld model cannot fully satisfy all combinat…
The well-known tensions on the cosmological parameters $H_0$ and $σ_8$ within the $Λ$CDM cosmology shown by the Planck-CMB and LSS data are possibly due to the systematics in the data or our ignorance of some new physics beyond the $Λ$CDM model. In this letter, we focus on the second possibility, and investigate a minimal extension of the $Λ$CDM model by allowing a coupling between its dark sector components (dark energy and dark matter). We analyze this scenario with Planck-CMB, KiDS and HST data, and find that the $H_0$ and $σ_8$ tensions disappear at 68\% CL. In the joint analyzes with Plan…
Phantom dark energy as a natural selection of evolutionary processes $\hat{\rm a}$ $\textit{la}$ $\textit{genetic algorithm}$ and cosmological tensions
In this work, we shall provide an $F(R)$ gravity theoretical framework for solving the $H_0$-tension. Specifically, by exploiting the $F(R)$ gravity correspondence with a scalar-tensor theory, we shall provide a condition in which when it is satisfied, the $H_0$-tension is alleviated. The condition that remedies the $H_0$-tension restricts the corresponding $F(R)$ gravity, and we present in brief the theoretical features of the constrained $F(R)$ gravity theory in both the Jordan and Einstein frames. The condition that may remedy the $H_0$-tension is based on the existence of a metastable de S…
Measurements of $σ_8$ from large scale structure observations show a discordance with the extrapolated $σ_8$ from Planck CMB parameters using $Λ$CDM cosmology. Similar discordance is found in the value of $H_0$ and $Ω_m$. In this paper, we show that the presence of viscosity in cold dark matter, shear or bulk or combination of both, can remove the above mentioned conflicts simultaneously. This indicates that the data from Planck CMB observation and different LSS observations prefer small but non-zero amount of viscosity in cold dark matter fluid.
Up-to-date cosmological data analyses have shown that \textit{(a)} a closed universe is preferred by the Planck data at more than $99\%$ CL, and \textit{(b)} interacting scenarios offer a very compelling solution to the Hubble constant tension. In light of these two recent appealing scenarios, we consider here an interacting dark matter-dark energy model with a non-zero spatial curvature component and a freely varying dark energy equation of state in both the quintessential and phantom regimes. When considering Cosmic Microwave Background data only, a phantom and closed universe can perfectly …
We propose an $f(T)$ teleparallel gravity theory including a torsional infrared (IR) correction. We show that the governing Friedmann's equations of a spatially flat universe include a phantom-like effective dark energy term sourced by the torsion IR correction. As has been suggested, this phantom phase does indeed act as to reconcile the tension between local and global measurements of the current Hubble value $H_0$. The resulting cosmological model predicts an electron scattering optical depth $τ_e\thickapprox 0.058$ at reionization redshift $z_{re} \sim 8.1$, in agreement with observations.…

We consider a model with two real scalar fields which admits phantom domain wall solutions. We investigate the structure and evolution of these phantom domain walls in an expanding homogeneous and isotropic universe. In particular, we show that the increase of the tension of the domain walls with cosmic time, associated to the evolution of the phantom scalar field, is responsible for an additional damping term in their equations of motion. We describe the macroscopic dynamics of phantom domain walls, showing that extended phantom defects whose tension varies on a cosmological timescale cannot …
We investigate the possibility of phantom crossing in the dark energy sector and solution for the Hubble tension between early and late universe observations. We use robust combinations of different cosmological observations, namely the CMB, local measurement of Hubble constant ($H_0$), BAO and SnIa for this purpose. For a combination of CMB+BAO data which is related to early Universe physics, phantom crossing in the dark energy sector is confirmed at $95$\% confidence level and we obtain the constraint $H_0=71.0^{+2.9}_{-3.8}$ km/s/Mpc at 68\% confidence level which is in perfect agreement wi…

A rapid phantom transition of the dark energy equation of state parameter $w$ at a transition redshift $z_t<0.1$ of the form $w(z)=-1+Δw\;Θ(z_t-z)$ with $Δw<0$ can lead to a higher value of the Hubble constant while closely mimicking a Planck18/$Λ$CDM form of the comoving distance $r(z)=\int_0^z\frac{dz'}{H(z')}$ for $z>z_t$. Such a transition however would imply a significantly lower value of the SnIa absolute magnitude $M$ than the value $M_C$ imposed by local Cepheid calibrators at $z<0.01$. Thus, in order to resolve the $H_0$ tension it would need to be accompanied by a similar transition …
We present a novel dark energy candidate, based upon the existence and dynamics of Ghost D-branes in a warped compactification of type IIB string theory. Gp-branes cancel the combined BPS sectors of the Dp-branes, while they preserve the same supersymmetries. We show that this scenario can naturally lead to either quintessence or phantom-like behaviors, depending on the form of the involved potentials and brane tension.
In this work we present a further investigation about Teleparallel Gravity Cosmology. We demonstrate that according the current astrophysical data (CC+Pantheon+BAO samplers with late universe measurements SH0ES+H0LiCOW), an $f(T,B)$ theory can provide another interpretation to the oscillatory behaviour of the dark energy equation of state when applied to late times. The four $f(T,B)$ cosmological viable models proposed here can undergo an epoch of late-time acceleration and reproduce quintessence and phantom regimes with a transition along the phantom-divided line, making this theory a good ap…
We explore whether non-standard dark sector physics might be required to solve the existing cosmological tensions. The properties we consider in combination are an interaction between the dark matter and dark energy components, and a dark energy equation of state $w$ different from that of the canonical cosmological constant $w=-1$. In principle, these two parameters are independent. In practice, to avoid early-time, superhorizon instabilities, their allowed parameter spaces are correlated. We analyze three classes of extended interacting dark energy models in light of the 2019 Planck CMB resu…
Yes, for a wide range of cosmological models ($Λ$CDM, non-interacting $w_z$CDM or models with possible interactions between dark energy and dark matter, in either phantom or non-phantom regimes). In the recent past there have been many attempts to solve the tension between direct measurements of $H_0$ and $σ_8 \sqrt{Ω_{0 {\rm m}}}$ from the respective low redshift observables and indirect measurements of these quantities from the cosmic microwave background (CMB). In this work we reconstruct a model independent approach that boils down to different classes of cosmological models under suitable…
In this work, we study tracker phantom dark energy models with a general parameterization of the scalar potentials. Our analysis also considers the scenario of having both phantom field and the cosmological constant as the dark energy components. A detailed statistical analysis with current cosmological observations shows an increase in the value of the Hubble parameter due to the presence of phantom dark energy but it can not alleviate the Hubble tension completely. Our results using Bayesian methods suggests a decisive evidence in favor of a phantom field over a positive cosmological constan…
In this paper we explore the existing tensions in the local cosmological expansion rate, $H_0$, and amplitude of the clustering of large-scale structure at $8\, h^{-1}\mathrm{Mpc}$, $σ_8$, as well as models that claim to alleviate these tensions. We consider seven models: evolving dark energy ($w$CDM), extra radiation ($N_\mathrm{eff}$), massive neutrinos, curvature, primordial magnetic fields (PMF), self-interacting neutrino models, and early dark energy (EDE). We test these models against three data sets that span the full range of measurable cosmological epochs, have significant precision, …
Almost in all interacting dark energy models present in the literature, the stability of the model becomes potentially sensitive to the dark energy equation of state parameter $w_x$, and a singularity arises at `$w_x = -1$'. Thus, it becomes mandatory to test the stability of the model into two separate regions, namely, for quintessence and phantom. This essentially brings in a discontinuity into the parameters space for $w_x$. Such discontinuity can be removed with some specific choices of the interaction or coupling function. In the present work we choose one particular coupling between dark…

Phantom dark energy can produce amplified cosmic acceleration at late times, thus increasing the value of $H_0$ favored by CMB data and releasing the tension with local measurements of $H_0$. We show that the best fit value of $H_0$ in the context of the CMB power spectrum is degenerate with a constant equation of state parameter $w$, in accordance with the approximate effective linear equation $H_0 + 30.93\; w - 36.47 = 0$ ($H_0$ in $km \; sec^{-1} \; Mpc^{-1}$). This equation is derived by assuming that both $Ω_{0 \rm m}h^2$ and $d_A=\int_0^{z_{rec}}\frac{dz}{H(z)}$ remain constant (for inva…

In this article we compare a variety of well known dynamical dark energy models using the cosmic microwave background measurements from the 2018 Planck legacy and 2015 Planck data releases, the baryon acoustic oscillations measurements and the local measurements of $H_0$ obtained by the SH0ES (Supernovae, $H_0$, for the Equation of State of Dark energy) collaboration analysing the Hubble Space Telescope data. We discuss the alleviation of $H_0$ tension, that is obtained at the price of a phantom-like dark energy equation of state. We perform a Bayesian evidence analysis to quantify the improve…
We investigate the observational consequences of a novel class of stable interacting dark energy (IDE) models, featuring interactions between dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE). In the first part of our work, we start by considering two IDE models which are known to present early-time linear perturbation instabilities. Applying a transformation depending on the dark energy equation of state (EoS) to the DM-DE coupling, we then obtain two novel stable IDE models. Subsequently, we derive robust and accurate constraints on the parameters of these models, assuming a constant EoS $w_x$ for the D…
The tension among inferences of Hubble constant ($H_0$) is found in a large array of datasets combinations. Modification to the late expansion history is the most direct solution to this discrepancy. In this work, we examine the viability of restoring the cosmological concordance with a novel version of transitional dark energy (TDE). The main anchors for the cosmic distance scale: cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO), and Type Ia supernova (SNe Ia) calibrated by Cepheids form a "impossible trinity", i.e., it's plausible to reconcile with any two of th…
Recent low-redshift observations give value of the present-time Hubble parameter $H_{0}\simeq 74~\rm{km s}^{-1}\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$, roughly 10\% higher than the predicted value $H_{0}=67.4~\rm{km s}^{-1}\rm{Mpc}^{-1}$ from Planck's observations of the Cosmic Microwave Background radiation~(CMB) and the $Λ$CDM model. Phenomenologically, we show that by adding an extra component X with negative density in the Friedmann equation, it can relieve the Hubble tension without changing the Planck's constraint on the matter and dark energy densities. For the extra negative density to be sufficiently small, i…
We analyze the properties that any late-time modification of the $Λ$CDM expansion history must have in order to consistently solve both the $H_0$ and the $σ_8$ tensions. Taking a model-independent approach, we obtain a set of necessary conditions that can be applied to generic late-time extensions. Our results are fully analytical and merely based on the assumptions that the deviations from the $Λ$CDM background remain small. For the concrete case of a dark energy fluid with equation of state $w(z)$, we derive the following general requirements: (i) Solving the $H_0$ tension demands $w(z)<-1$ …
We investigate interacting scenarios which belong to a wider class, since they include a dynamical dark energy component whose equation of state follows various one-parameter parametrizations. We confront them with the latest observational data from Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), Joint light-curve (JLA) sample from Supernovae Type Ia, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), Hubble parameter measurements from Cosmic Chronometers (CC) and a gaussian prior on the Hubble parameter $H_0$. In all examined scenarios we find a non-zero interaction, nevertheless the non-interacting case is allowed with…
In a model independent approach, we derive generic conditions that any late time modification of the $Λ$CDM expansion history must satisfy in order to consistently solve both the $H_0$ and the $σ_8$ tensions. Our results are fully analytical and the method is merely based on the assumption that the late-time deviations from $Λ$CDM remain small. For the concrete case of a dark energy fluid with deviations encoded in the expansion history and the gravitational coupling constant, we present necessary conditions on its equation of state. Solving both the $H_0$ and $σ_8$ tensions requires that $w(z…
The phenomenological parametrizations of dark-energy (DE) equation of state can be very helpful, since they allow for the investigation of its cosmological behavior despite the fact that its underlying theory is unknown. However, although there has been a large amount of research on DE parametrizations which involve two or more free parameters, the one-parameter parametrizations seem to be underestimated. We perform a detailed observational confrontation of five one-parameter DE models, with observational data from cosmic microwave background (CMB), Joint light-curve analysis sample from Super…
We show that when a procedure is made to remove the tension between a supernova Ia (SN Ia) data set and observations from BAO and CMB, there might be the case where the same SN Ia set built with two different light-curve fitters behaves as two separate and distinct supernova sets, and the tension found by some authors between supernova sets actually could be due to tension or inconsistency between fitters. We also show that the information of the fitter used in an SN Ia data set could be relevant to determine whether phantom type models are favored or not when such a set is combined with the B…
The phantom brane has several important distinctive features: (i) Its equation of state is phantom-like, but there is no future `big rip' singularity, (ii) the effective cosmological constant on the brane is dynamically screened, because of which the expansion rate is {\em smaller} than that in $Λ$CDM at high redshifts. In this paper, we constrain the Phantom braneworld using distance measures such as Type Ia supernovae (SNeIa), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), and the compressed Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data. We find that the simplest braneworld models provide a good fit to the da…
We investigate various scenarios which include interaction forms between dark matter and dark energy that exhibit sign reverse, namely where the transfer of energy between the dark fluids changes sign during evolution. We study the large-scale inhomogeneities in such interacting scenarios and we confront them with the latest astronomical data. Our analysis shows that the sign-changeable interaction models are able to produce stable perturbations. Additionally, the data seem to slightly favor a non-zero interaction, however, within $1σ$ confidence level (CL) the scenarios cannot be distinguishe…
Interacting dark energy models are widely renowned for giving an explanation to the cosmic coincidence problem as well as several observational issues. According to the recent observational data, and so far we are concerned with the literature, the choice of the interaction function between dark matter and dark energy is always questionable since there is no such underlying theory that could derive it. Thus, in this work we have raised this issue by proposing two new nonlinear interaction functions and constrain them using cosmic microwave background (CMB) from Planck 2018, baryon acoustic osc…
The answer is Yes! We indeed find that interacting dark energy can alleviate the current tension on the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$ between the Cosmic Microwave Background anisotropies constraints obtained from the Planck satellite and the recent direct measurements reported by Riess et al. 2016. The combination of these two datasets points towards an evidence for a non-zero dark matter-dark energy coupling $ξ$ at more than two standard deviations, with $ξ=-0.26_{-0.12}^{+0.16}$ at $95\%$ CL. However the $H_0$ tension is better solved when the equation of state of the interacting dark e…
