Using optical eigenmodes defined by the interaction between the electromagnetic fields and photonic structures it is possible to determine the optimal illumination of these structures with respect to a specific measurable quantity. One such quantity considered here is the electric field intensity in the hotspot regions of an array of nano-antennas. This paper presents two possible methods, both based on optical eigenmodes, to determine the optimal and most efficient illumination that couples to a single hotspot on top of a single nano-antenna taken from an array of nano-antennas. The two methods are compared in terms of cross-talk and overall coupling efficiency.
We study the transverse spin angular momentum of fiber eigenmodes. As an intrinsic property of fiber eigenmodes, it becomes considerable in optical nanofibers and, especially, increases sharply in the evanescent field. We derive analytical expressions of this angular momentum, and present its density distribution inside andoutside nanofibers. Significantly, we find the optimal ratio of the fiber core radius to the wavelength to obtain the maximum surface transverse spin. For instance, the optimal fiber radius is one fourth of the wavelength for the fundamental mode. Furthermore, we investigate…
We consider periodic arrangements of metal nanostructures and study the effect of periodicity on the localised surface plasmon resonance of the structures within an electrostatic eigenmode approximation. We show that within this limit, the collective surface plasmon resonances of the periodic structures can be expressed in terms of superpositions of the eigenmodes of uncoupled nanostructures that exhibit a standing--wave character delocalised across the entire periodic structure. The formalism derived successfully enables the design and accounts for the observation of plasmonic edge-states in …
Dark-field illumination is shown to make planar chiral nanoparticle arrangements exhibit circular dichroism in extinction analogous to true chiral scatterers. Circular dichrosim is experimentally observed at the maximum scattering of single oligomers consisting rotationally symmetric arrangements of gold nanorods, with strong agreement to numerical simulation. A dipole model is developed to show that this effect is caused by a difference in the geometric projection of a nanorod onto the handed orientation of electric fields created by a circularly polarized dark-field that is normally incident…
We show that the fundamental eigenmode of a shallow optical bottle microresonator (also called a SNAP microresonator) can be made exceptionally uniform along its axial length. The introduced microresonator has the effective radius variation resembling the profile of a bat with ears and wings. Remarkably, reduction of the axial size of this microresonator by cutting the wings does not alter the uniformity of its fundamental eigenmode. Being of general interest, our findings pave a way for improving the perceptibility of micro/nanoparticle sensing. These results also suggest a bottle microresona…
ZnO nano particles are synthesized at different percentages of Ag dopant by facile precipitation method. Two photon absorption (2PA) cross-section and nonlinear refractive index of ZnO nano particles are studied with 130 femto-second laser pulses at a repletion rate of 1 kHz with central wavelength of 532 nm by z-scan technique. The 2PA cross-section of ZnO nano particles are obtained by theoretical calculations, using rate equation approach. Both absorption cross-section and nonlinear refractive index increased with increasing the Ag dopant percentage. We have observed an increase of order of…

A universal property of resonant subwavelength scatterers is that their optical cross-sections are proportional to a square wavelength, $λ^2$, regardless of whether they are plasmonic nanoparticles, two-level quantum systems, or RF antennas. The maximum cross-section is an intrinsic property of the \emph{incident field}: plane waves, with infinite power, can be decomposed into multipolar orders with finite powers proportional to $λ^2$. In this Article, we identify $λ^2/c$ and $λ^3/c$ as analogous force and torque constants, derived within a more general quadratic scattering-channel framework f…
In this letter, we report on numerical study, fabrication and experimental observations of tunable photonic nanojet and photonic hook. Here, the curved photonic nanojets (photonic hooks) are generated by single mesoscale microcylinder that we fabricated from polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), upon its boundary illumination and adjustable area at an incident wavelength of λ = 405 nm. Experimental observations were conducted for PDMS microcylinder of diameter d = 5 μm deposited on a silicon substrate with the aluminum mask. Measurements were performed with a scanning optical microscope. Our experiment…
Concentrating optical field in an eigenmode with a tiny volume is vitally important for light-matter interactions at the fundamental level and underpins new technologies. In the past decades, researchers have investigated various approaches to shrink light and so far managed to reduce the volume of optical eigenmodes, under the quantum-optical definition, down to several ten nm3. Here we report on the discovery, characterization and engineering of a class of extremely localized eigenmodes that are resonances of atomistic protrusions on a metallic host nanoparticle and feature quantum-optical m…
The possibility of overcoming the critical condition for localized photonic nanojet upon plane optical wave diffraction at mesoscale dielectric particle, which is commonly known as "the refractive index contrast is less than two", was recently reported in our works. To this end, the novel geometrical scheme of photonic nanojet generation in "reflection mode" was proposed based on a super-contrast microparticle (n~2) placed near a flat mirror. In this paper, through the numerical FDTD calculations of optical near-field structure of 2D and 3D dielectric microparticles (cylinder, sphere) we exten…

We demonstrate the stimulated Raman near-field microscopy of few molecules, measured only using near-field optical forces thereby eliminating the need for far-field optical detection. The molecules were excited in the near-field without resonant electronic enhancement. We imaged gold nanoparticles of 30 nm diameter functionalized with a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 4-nitrobenzenethiol (4-NBT) molecules. The maximum number of molecules detected by the gold-coated nano-probe at the position of maximum field enhancement could be fewer than 20 molecules. The molecules were imaged by vibrating…
The formation of a stable magneto plasmonic dimer with THz resonances is theoretically studied for the principal directions of the system. Unlike a recent report, our work provides a complete description of the full photonic coupling for arbitrary magnetic fields as, for instance, unbalanced particle spins. As an illustration, we consider two small, n-doped InSb nanoparticles under illumination by two counter-propagating plane waves. Remarkably, when an external magnetic field exists, the symmetry in the system is broken, and a resonant radiation pressure for the dimer appears. Similarly, tuna…
A device that achieves controllable rotation of the state of polarization by rotating the orientation of the eigenmodes of a waveguide by 45$^{\circ}$ is introduced and analyzed. The device can be implemented using lossless materials on a nanoscale and helps circumvent the inherent polarization dependence of photonic devices realized within the silicon on insulator platform. We propose and evaluate two novel polarization rotator-based schemes to achieve polarization engineering functions: (1) A multi-purpose device, with dimensions on the order of a few wavelengths which can function as a pola…
Optical properties of nanoparticles attract continuous attention owing to their high fundamental and applied importance across many disciplines. Recently emerged field of all-dielectric nanophotonics employs optically induced electric and magnetic Mie resonances in dielectric nanoparticles with a high refractive index. This property allows obtaining additional valuable degrees of freedom to control optical responses of nanophotonic structures. Here we propose a conceptually distinct approach towards reaching optical resonances in dielectric nanoparticles. We show that lacking conventional Mie …
The statistical properties of wave chaotic systems of varying dimensionalities and realizations have been studied extensively. These systems are commonly characterized by the statistics of the eigenmode-spacings and the statistics of the eigenfunctions. Here, we propose photonic crystal (PC) defect waveguide graphs as a new physical setting for chaotic graph studies. Photonic crystal waveguides possess a dispersion relation for the propagating modes which is engineerable. Graphs constructed by joining these waveguides possess junctions and bends with distinct scattering properties. We present …
The multipole expansion of a nano-photonic structure's electromagnetic response is a versatile tool to interpret optical effects in nano-optics, but it only gives access to the modes that are excited by a specific illumination. In particular the study of various illuminations requires multiple, costly numerical simulations. Here we present a formalism we call "generalized polarizabilities", in which we combine the recently developed exact multipole decomposition [Alaee et al., Opt. Comms. 407, 17-21 (2018)] with the concept of a generalized field propagator. After an initial computation step, …
Spin-orbit interactions of light are ubiquitous in multiple branches of nanophotonics, including optical wave localization. In that framework, it is widely accepted that circularly polarized beams lead to spin-dependent apparent shifts of dipolar targets commonly referred to as optical mirages. In contrast, these optical mirages vanish when the illumination comes from a spinless beam such as a linearly polarized wave. Here we show that optical localization errors emerge for particles sustaining electric and magnetic dipolar response under the illumination of spinless beams. As an example, we c…

The emerging optical multiplexing within nanoscale shows super-capacity in encoding information by using the time-domain fingerprints from uniform nanoparticles. However, the optical diffraction limit compromises the decoding throughput and accuracy of the nanoparticles during wide-field imaging. This, in turn, challenges the quality of nanoparticles to afford the modulated excitation condition, and further to retain the multiplexed optical fingerprints for super-resolution multiplexing. Here we report a tailor-made time-domain super-resolution method with the lifetime-engineered upconversion …
We present a simple bottom-up approach via an incoherent unpolarized illumination and the choice of a solvent-droplet-induced-dewetting method to photoinducenano doughnuts on the surface of azopolymer thin films. We demonstrate that doughnut-shaped nanostructures can be formed and tailored with a wide range of typical sizes, thus providing a rich field of applications using surface photo-patterning. Furthermore, due to the presence of highly photoactive azobenzene derivative in the material, illumination of these nanostructures by a polarized laser light shows the possibility of a further grow…
We propose a free-space, inverse design of nanostructure's effective mode-matching fields via a backward propagation of tightly focused vector beams to the pupil plane of an aplanatic system of high numerical aperture. First, we study the nanostructure's eigenmodes without considering any excitation fields and then extract the modal near fields in the focal plane. Each modal field is then taken as the desired focal field, the band-limited waves of which are backward propagated to the pupil plane via a reversal of the Richards--Wolf vector diffraction formula. The pupil fields can be designed t…
Effective Dielectric Constants of Photonic Crystal of Aligned Anisotropic Cylinders: Application to the Optical Response of Periodic Array of Carbon Nanotubes
This paper aims to maximize optical force and torque on arbitrary micro- and nano-scale objects using numerically optimized structured illumination. By developing a numerical framework for computer-automated design of 3d vector-field illumination, we demonstrate a 20-fold enhancement in optical torque per intensity over circularly polarized plane wave on a model plasmonic particle. The nonconvex optimization is efficiently performed by combining a compact cylindrical Bessel basis representation with a fast boundary element method and a standard derivative-free, local optimization algorithm. We…
Optically-induced magnetic resonances in non-magnetic media have unlocked magnetic light-matter interactions and led to new technologies in many research fields. Previous proposals for the levitation of nanoscale particles without structured illumination have worked on the basis of epsilon-near-zero surfaces or anisotropic materials but these carry with them significant fabrication difficulties. We report the optical levitation of a magnetic dipole over a wide range of realistic materials, including bulk metals, thereby relieving these difficulties. The repulsion is independent of surface loss…
Eigenmode optical forces arising in symmetrically coupled waveguides have opposite sign on opposite waveguides and thus can deform the waveguides by changing their relative separation, but cannot change any other degree of freedom on their own. It would be extremely desirable to have a way to act on the center of mass of such a system. In this work we show that it is possible to do so by injecting a superposition of eigenmodes that are degenerate in frequency and have opposite parity along the desired direction, resulting in beating forces that have the same sign on opposite waveguides and the…
