We study the screening length of a quark-antiquark pair moving in a hot plasma living in two sphere $S^2$ manifold using AdS/CFT correspondence where the background metric is four dimensional Schwarzschild-AdS black hole. The geodesic solution of the string ends at the boundary is given by a stationary motion in the equatorial plane as such the separation length $L$ of quark-antiquark pair is parallel to the angular velocity $ω$. The screening length and the bound energy are computed numerically using Mathematica. We find that the plots are bounded from below by some functions related to the momentum transfer $P_c$ of the drag force configuration. We compare the result by computing the screening length in the quark-antiquark reference frame where the gravity dual are "Boost-AdS" and Kerr-AdS black holes. Finding relations of the parameters of both black holes, we argue that the relation between mass parameters $M_{Sch}$ of the Schwarzschild-AdS black hole and $M_{Kerr}$ of the Kerr-AdS black hole in high temperature is given by $M_{Kerr}=M_{Sch}(1-a^2l^2)^{3/2}$, where $a$ is the angular momentum parameter.
We compute the holographic quark potential in the realm of brane cosmology. We show that under certain conditions the very geometry due to an inflationary 3-brane induces a D3-D7-brane system. The cosmological constant that appears involved in the original geometry is attributed to the D7-brane position itself in its embedding process. We address the issues of confinement at low distances, screening effects at sufficiently large distances, and quark condensate.
We investigate the response of dense and hot holographic QCD (hQCD) to a static and baryonic electric field E using the chiral model of Sakai and Sugimoto. Strong fields with E>(\sqrtλM_{KK})^2 free quark pairs, causing the confined vacuum and matter state to decay. We generalize Schwinger's QED persistence function to dense hQCD. At high temperature and density, Ohm's law is derived generalizing a recent result by Karch and O'Bannon to the chiral case.
It has been reported that, within the hard-thermal-loop resummation scheme, the production rate of soft real photons from a hot quark-gluon plasma exhibits unscreened mass singularities. We show that still higher-order resummations screen the mass singularities and obtain the finite soft-photon production rate to leading order at logarithmic accuracy ${\cal O} (αα_s \ln^2 α_s)$.
The production rate of a soft photon from a hot quark-gluon plasma is computed to leading order at logarithmic accuracy. The canonical hard-thermal-loop resummation scheme leads to logarithmically divergent production rate due to mass singularities. We show that these mass singularities are screened by employing the effective hard-quark propagator, which is obtained through resummation of one-loop self-energy part in a self-consistent manner. The damping-rate part of the effective hard-quark propagator, rather than the thermal-mass part, plays the dominant role of screening mass singularities.…
We present a five-dimensional twice anisotropic holographic model supported by Einstein-dilaton-three-Maxwell action describing light quarks. The first of the Maxwell fields provides finite chemical potential. The second Maxwell field serves for anisotropy, characterizing spatial anisotropy of the QGP produced in heavy-ion collisions (HIC). The third Maxwell field is related to a magnetic field that appears in HIC. The dependence of the 5-dim black hole solution and confinement/deconfinement phase diagram on this magnetic field is considered. The effect of the inverse magnetic catalyses for li…
We consider the effect of a periodic perturbation with frequency $ω$ on the holographic N=4 plasma represented by the planar AdS black hole. The response of the system is given by exponentially decaying waves. The corresponding complex wave numbers can be found by solving wave equations in the AdS black hole background with infalling boundary conditions on the horizon in an analogous way as in the calculation of quasinormal modes. The complex momentum eigenvalues have an interpretation as poles of the retarded Green's functions, where the inverse of the imaginary part gives an absorption lengt…
We compute a certain class of corrections to (specific) screening lengths in strongly coupled nonabelian plasmas using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In this holographic framework, these corrections arise from various higher curvature interactions modifying the leading Einstein gravity action. The changes in the screening lengths are perturbative in inverse powers of the 't Hooft coupling or of the number of colours, as can be made precise in the context where the dual gauge theory is superconformal. We also compare the results of these holographic calculations to lattice results for the analogou…
We present a five-dimensional fully anisotropic holographic model for heavy quarks supported by Einstein-dilaton-three-Maxwell action; one of the Maxwell fields is related to an external magnetic field. Influence of the external magnetic field on the 5-dim black hole solution and the confinement/deconfinement phase diagram is considered. The effect of the inverse magnetic catalyses is revealed and positions of critical end points are found.
Using the gauge/gravity duality we calculate the heavy quark-antiquark potential in a hot, anisotropic and strongly coupled Yang-Mills plasma in (3+1)-dimensions. As the anisotropic medium we take a deformed version of \mathcal{N} = 4 super Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature following a recent work where the dual type IIB supergravity solution is also proposed. We turn on a small value of the anisotropy parameter, for which the gravity dual is known analytically (perturbatively), and compute the velocity-dependent quark-antiquark interaction potential when the pair is moving through the p…
We construct the supergravity dual of the hot quark-gluon plasma in the mass-deformed ${\cal N}=4$ Super-Yang-Mills theory (also known as ${\cal N}=1^*$). The full ten-dimensional type IIB holographic dual is described by 20 functions of two variables, which we determine numerically, and it contains a black hole with $S^5$ horizon topology. As we lower the temperature to around half of the mass of the chiral multiplets, we find evidence for (most likely a first-order) phase transition, which could lead either to one of the Polchinski-Strassler confining, screening, or oblique vacua with polari…
Finite 't Hooft coupling corrections to multiple physical observables in strongly coupled $N=4$ supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma are examined, in an attempt to assess the stability of the expansion in inverse powers of the 't Hooft coupling $λ$. Observables considered include thermodynamic quantities, transport coefficients, and quasinormal mode frequencies. Although large $λ$ expansions for quasinormal mode frequencies are notably less well behaved than the expansions of other quantities, we find that a partial resummation of higher order corrections can significantly reduce the sensitivity o…
The gluon transverse self-energy of the pure Yang-Mills system at high-temperature is analysed in the static limit and at fourth order in the coupling. Possible contributions to this function are collected, seen to be gauge-fixing independent subsets and shown to vanish all, except those which are either regulators or constituents of the self-energy of Euklidean 3D Yang-Mills theory at zero temperature. The latter self-energy, in turn, is known from the non-perturbative analysis by Karabali and Nair.
We propose a model of a strongly-interacting two-impurity Kondo system based on the AdS/CFT correspondence, also known as holography. In a Landau Fermi Liquid, the single-impurity Kondo effect is the screening of an impurity spin at low temperature $T$. The two-impurity Kondo model then describes the competition between the Kondo interaction and the Heisenberg interaction between two impurity spins, also called the RKKY interaction. For spin-$1/2$ impurities, that competition leads to a quantum phase transition from a Kondo-screened phase to a phase in which the two impurity spins screen one a…
We study certain properties of the low energy regime of a theory which resembles four dimensional YM theory in the framework of a non-critical holographic gravity dual. We use for the latter the near extremal $AdS_6$ non-critical SUGRA. We extract the glueball spectra that associates with the fluctuations of the dilaton, one form and the graviton and compare the results to those of the critical near extremal $D4$ model and lattice simulations. We show an area law behavior for the Wilson loop and screening for the 't Hooft loop. The Luscher term is found to be $-{3/24}\frac π{L}$. We derive the…
In this paper the smallest thermal screening mass associated with the correlator of the $CT$-odd operator, $\sim {\rm Tr}F_{μν}\tilde{F}^{μν}$, is determined in strongly coupled non-Abelian gauge plasmas which are holographically dual to non-conformal, bottom-up Einstein+scalar gravity theories. These holographic models are constructed to describe the thermodynamical properties of $SU(N_c)$ plasmas near deconfinement at large $N_c$ and we identify this thermal mass with the Debye screening mass $m_D$. In this class of non-conformal models with a first order deconfinement transition at $T_c$, $…
The L-dependence of the static potential between Nc quarks arranged in a circle of radius L (a "baryon") immersed in the hot plasma of a gauge theory with Nc colors defines a screening length Ls. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to compute this screening length for the case of heavy quarks in the plasma of strongly coupled N=4 super Yang-Mills theory moving with velocity v relative to the baryon. We find that in the v -> 1 limit, Ls \propto (1-v^2)^{1/4}/T, and find that corrections to this velocity dependence are small at lower velocities. This result provides evidence for the robustness of …
In this paper we investigate the relation between the bulk and boundary in AdS/CFT. We first discuss the relation between the Poincare and the global vacua, and then study various probes of the bulk from the boundary theory point of view. We derive expressions for retarded propagators and note that objects in free fall look like expanding bubbles in the boundary theory. We also study several Yang-Mills theory examples where we investigate thermal screening and confinement using propagators. In the case of confinement we also calculate the profile of a flux tube and provide an alternative deriv…
We study two-point correlation function in a medium composed of two kinds of matter, which is the dual of a three-dimensional generalized $p$-brane gas geometry. Following the holographic prescription, we calculate temporal and spatial two-point functions in the medium. In general, the screening effect of the medium makes two-point functions decrease more rapidly than the CFT's two-point function. In the extremal limit, however, we find that a temporal two-point function is still conformal. This indicates that a two-dimensional UV CFT flows into a one-dimensional quantum mechanics in the IR li…
We study holographic probes dual to heavy quark impurities interpolating between fundamental and symmetric/antisymmetric tensor representations in strongly coupled N=4 supersymmetric gauge theory. These correspond to non-conformal D3- and D5-brane probe embeddings in AdS_5 x S^5 exhibiting flows on their world-volumes. By examining the asymptotic regimes of the embeddings and the one-point function of static fields sourced by the boundary impurity, we conclude that the D5-brane embedding describes the screening of fundamental quarks in the UV into an antisymmetric source in the IR, whilst the …
We compute numerically the full retarded Green's functions for conserved currents in the shear channel of a (2+1)-dimensional field theory at non-zero temperature and density. This theory is assumed to be holographically dual to a non-extremal, electric Reissner-Nordstr\om AdS4 black hole with planar horizon. Using the holographic description we obtain results for arbitrary frequencies and momenta and survey the detailed structure of these correlators. In particular, we demonstrate the `repulsion' and `clover-leaf crossing' of their poles and stress the importance of the residues at the poles …
The Debye mass m_D is computed nonperturbatively in the deconfined phase of QCD, where chromomagnetic confinement is known to be present. The latter defines m_D to be m_D=c_D\sqrt{σ_s}, where c_D \approx 2 and σ_s=σ_s(T) is the spatial string tension. The resulting magnitude of m_D(T) and temperature dependence are in good agreement with lattice calculations.
We study the propagation of a massless minimally coupled scalar in the near horizon geometry of non-extremal NS5-branes. Using the holographic principle for dilatonic backgrounds we compute the two-point function of an operator in Little String Theory at the Hagedorn temperature. We then comment on relations with correlation functions in two dimensional string theory.
One of the challenges in relating experimental measurements of the suppression in the number of J/ψmesons produced in heavy ion collisions to lattice QCD calculations is that whereas the lattice calculations treat J/ψmesons at rest, in a heavy ion collision a c\bar c pair can have a significant velocity with respect to the hot fluid produced in the collision. The putative J/ψfinds itself in a hot wind. We present the first rigorous non-perturbative calculation of the consequences of a wind velocity v on the screening length L_s for a heavy quark-antiquark pair in hot N=4 supersymmetric QCD. We…
Using the framework of higher-form global symmetries, we examine the regime of validity of force-free electrodynamics by evaluating the lifetime of the electric field operator, which is non-conserved due to screening effects. We focus on a holographic model which has the same global symmetry as that of low energy plasma and obtain the lifetime of (non-conserved) electric flux in a strong magnetic field regime. The lifetime is inversely correlated to the magnetic field strength and thus suppressed in the strong field regime.
The heavy quark potential of a thermal Yang-Mills theory in strong coupling limit is explored in terms of the holographic principle. With a fairly general AdS/QCD metric the heavy quark potential displays a kink-like screening in the plasma phase. This behavior may conflict the causality of a field theory that is mathematically equivalent to the thermal Yang-Mills.
We analyse the effect of velocity and acceleration on the temperature felt by particles and strings in backgrounds relevant in holographic models. First, we compare accelerated strings and strings at finite temperature. We find that for fixed Unruh temperature felt by the string endpoints, the screening length is smaller for the accelerated Wilson loop than for the static one in a thermal background of the same temperature; hence acceleration provides a "more efficient" mechanism for melting of mesons. Secondly, we show that the velocity-dependence of the screening length of the colour force, …

We investigate the behavior of energy momentum tensor correlators in strongly coupled large-N_c Yang-Mills theory at nonzero temperature, working within the Improved Holographic QCD model. In particular, we determine the spectral functions and corresponding imaginary time correlators in the bulk and shear channels, and compare the results to recent perturbative and lattice calculations where available. For the bulk channel imaginary time correlator, for which all three results exist, lattice data is seen to favor the holographic prediction over the perturbative one over a wide range of tempera…
We have studied, for the first time, screening masses obtained from glueball-like correlators in Quantum Chromodynamics with four light dynamical flavours of quarks in the temperature range 1.5T_c < T < 3T_c, where T_c is the temperature at which the chiral transition occurs. We have also studied pion-like and sigma-like screening masses, and found that they are degenerate in the entire range of T. These obstruct perturbative dimensional reduction since the lowest glueball screening mass is heavier than them. Extrapolation of our results suggests that this obstruction may affect the entire ran…
We revisit holographic mesons in the D4/D6 model to study holographic light vector mesons and the properties of heavy quarkonium in confining and deconfining phases. To treat the light mesons and heavy quarkonium on the same footing, we use the same compactification scale MKK in both systems. We observe that like scalar and pseudo-scalar mesons the vector meson mass is linearly proportional to the square root of the quark mass, when the quark mass is large. With a MKK fixed by light meson masses, we calculate the mass of heavy quarkonium in confining and deconfining phases. We also obtain the …
We show that standard puzzles of hot Big Bang cosmology that motivated the introduction of cosmological inflation, such as the smoothness and horizon problem, the flatness problem and the relic problem are also solved by holographic models for very early universe based on perturbative three dimensional QFT. In the holographic setup, cosmic evolution is mapped to inverse renormalization group (RG) flow of the dual QFT, and the resolution of the puzzles relies on properties of the RG flow.

We develop the formalism of holographic renormalization to compute two-point functions in a holographic Kondo model. The model describes a $(0+1)$-dimensional impurity spin of a gauged $SU(N)$ interacting with a $(1+1)$-dimensional, large-$N$, strongly-coupled Conformal Field Theory (CFT). We describe the impurity using Abrikosov pseudo-fermions, and define an $SU(N)$-invariant scalar operator $\mathcal{O}$ built from a pseudo-fermion and a CFT fermion. At large $N$ the Kondo interaction is of the form $\mathcal{O}^{\dagger} \mathcal{O}$, which is marginally relevant, and generates a Renormali…
We consider a strings-junction holographic model of probe baryon in the finite-temperature supersymmetric Yang-Mills dual of the AdS-Schwarzschild black hole background. In particular, we investigate the screening length for high spin baryon composed of rotating N_c heavy quarks. To rotate quarks by finite force, we put hard infrared cutoff in the bulk and give quarks finite mass. We find that N_c microscopic strings are embedded reasonably in the bulk geometry when they have finite angular velocity ω, similar to the meson case. By defining the screening length as the critical separation of qu…
We first study Z(N) walls in a deconfined phase of Witten's D4-brane background of pure SU(N) Yang-Mills theory, motivated by a recent work in the case of N=4 SYM. Similarly to it, we propose that for a large wall charge k ~ N, it is described by k D2-branes blown up into a NS5-brane wrapping S^3 inside S^4 via Myers effect, and we calculate the tension by suitable U-duality. We find a precise Casimir scaling for the tension formula. We then study the fate of Z(N)-vacua in a presence of fundamental flavors in quenched approximation via gauge/gravity correspondence. In the case of D3/D7 system …
We give a brief overview of recent results obtained through the gauge/gravity correspondence, concerning the propagation of a heavy quark in strongly-coupled conformal field theories (such as N=4 super-Yang-Mills), both at zero and finite temperature. In the vacuum, we discuss energy loss, radiation damping, signal propagation and radiation-induced fluctuations. In the presence of a thermal plasma, our emphasis is on early-time energy loss, screening and quark-antiquark evolution after pair creation. Throughout, quark dynamics is seen to be efficiently encapsulated in the usual string worldshe…
The finite temperature spectrum of pseudo-scalar glueballs in a plasma is studied using a holographic model. The $ 0^{-+}$ glueball is represented by a pseudo-scalar (axion) field living in a five dimensional geometry that comes from a solution of Einstein equations for gravity coupled with a dilaton scalar field. The spectral function obtained from the model shows a clear peak corresponding to the quasi-particle ground state. Analysing the variation of the position of the peak with temperature, we describe the thermal behavior of the Debye screening mass of the plasma. As a check of consisten…
We examine the possibility of a confinement-deconfinement phase transition at finite temperature in both parity invariant and topologically massive three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics. We review an argument showing that the Abelian version of the Polyakov loop operator is an order parameter for confinement, even in the presence of dynamical electrons. We show that, in the parity invariant case, where the tree-level Coulomb potential is logarithmic, there is a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at a critical temperature ($T_c=e^2/8π+{\cal O}(e^4/m)$, when the ratio of the electrom…
We analyze the time evolution of several physical observables, namely the pressure anisotropy, the scalar condensate, the charge density, and also, for the first time, the non-equilibrium entropy for a Bjorken expanding strongly coupled $\mathcal{N}=4$ Supersymmetric Yang-Mills plasma charged under an Abelian $U(1)$ subgroup of the global $SU(4)$ R-symmetry. This represents a far-from-equilibrium, hot and dense strongly coupled quantum fluid with a critical point in its phase diagram. For some sets of initial data preserving all the energy conditions, dynamically driven transient violations of…
This manuscript reviews recent theoretical progress on the understanding of the quark gluon plasma in a magnetic field that I presented on the conference Hot Quarks 2016, held at South Padre Island, Texas, USA, 12-17 September 2016. It is shown that, using a holographic bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton model, one can have a good quantitative agreement with Lattice data for QCD equation of state and Polyakov loop with nonzero magnetic field. I also present results for the anisotropic shear viscosity ratio $η_{\parallel}/η_{\perp}$, with the conclusion that $η_{\parallel}<η_{\perp}$ for $B>0$.
Energy loss in anisotropic hot dense QGP in external magnetic field is studied within holographic approach. Energy loss is calculated by estimation of behaviour of the spatial Wilson loops using the effective potential technique. We examine the dependence of the effective potential on the spatial Wilson loops orientation in fully anisotropic background. For this purpose we obtain general formulas for the effective potential and study appearance of the effective potential dynamical wall. We consider particular fully anisotropic model [arXiv:2011.07023] supported by Einstein-Dilaton-three-Maxwel…
We study a single-channel Kondo effect using a recently developed holographic large-$N$ technique. In order to obtain resistivity of this model, we introduce a probe field. The gravity dual of a localized fermionic impurity in 1+1-dimensional host matter is constructed by embedding a localized 2-dimensional Anti-de Sitter (\ads{2})-brane in the bulk of \ads{3}. This helps us construct an impurity charge density which acts as a source to the bulk equation of motion of the probe gauge field. The functional form of the charge density is obtained independently by solving the equations of motion fo…
This is a contribution for the Proceedings of the Conference Hot Quarks 2016, held at South Padre Island, Texas, USA, 12-17 September 2016. I briefly review some thermodynamic and baryon transport results obtained from a bottom-up Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton holographic model engineered to describe the physics of the quark-gluon plasma at finite temperature and baryon density. The results for the equation of state, baryon susceptibilities, and the curvature of the crossover band are in quantitative agreement with the corresponding lattice QCD results with $2+1$ flavors and physical quark masses. …
Semi-holographic models of non-Fermi liquids have been shown to have generically stable generalised quasi-particles on the Fermi surface. Although these excitations are broad and exhibit particle-hole asymmetry, they were argued to be stable from interactions at the Fermi surface. In this work, we use this observation to compute the density response and collective behaviour in these systems. Compared to the Fermi liquid case, we find that the boundaries of the particle-hole continuum are blurred by incoherent contributions. However, there is a region inside this continuum, that we call inner c…
The Holographic Space-time (HST) model of inflation has a potential explanation for dark matter as tiny primordial black holes. Motivated by a recent paper of Barrau\cite{barrau} we propose a version of this model where some of the Inflationary Black Holes (IBHs), whose decay gives rise to the Hot Big Bang, carry the smallest value of a discrete symmetry charge. The fraction $f$ of IBHs carrying this charge is difficult to estimate from first principles, but we fix it by requiring that the crossover between radiation and matter domination occurs at the correct temperature $T_{eq} \sim 1 eV = 1…
We study the phase structure of the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model in the plane of temperature and baryon chemical potential, including the effect of a nonzero current quark mass. Our study is performed in the decompactified limit of the model, which, at least regarding the chiral phase transition, appears to be closer to real-world QCD than the original version. Following earlier studies, we account for the quark mass in an effective way based on an open Wilson line operator whose expectation value is identified with the chiral condensate. We find that the quark mass stabilizes a configuration w…
