This paper addresses a gap in the classifcation of Codazzi tensors with exactly two eigenfunctions on a Riemannian manifold of dimension three or higher. Derdzinski proved that if the trace of such a tensor is constant and the dimension of one of the the eigenspaces is $n-1$, then the metric is a warped product where the base is an open interval- a conclusion we will show to be true under a milder trace condition. Furthermore, we construct examples of Codazzi tensors having two eigenvalue functions, one of which has eigenspace dimension $n-1$, where the metric is not a warped product with interval base, refuting a remark in \cite{Besse} that the warped product conclusion holds without any restriction on the trace.
We prove a lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on a compact Riemannian spin manifold depending on the scalar curvature as well as a chosen Codazzi tensor. The inequality generalizes the classical estimate from [2].
We prove several Liouville-type non-existence theorems for higher order Codazzi tensors and classical Codazzi tensors on complete and compact Riemannian manifolds, in particular. These results will be obtained by using theorems of the connections between the geometry of a complete smooth manifold and the global behavior of its subharmonic functions. In conclusion, we show applications of this method for global geometry of a complete locally conformally flat Riemannian manifold with constant scalar curvature because its Ricci tensor is a Codazzi tensor and for global geometry of a complete hype…
In this paper we deal with the following problem: Find all Riemannian metrics on a manifold that can be realized isometrically as immersed hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space. We study this problem for a wide class of metrics on hypersurfaces arising from Codazzi tensors.
In this paper, we classify three-dimensional Lorentzian Lie groups on which Ricci tensors associated to Bott connections, canonical connections and Kobayashi-Nomizu connections are Codazzi tensors associated to these connections. We also classify three-dimensional Lorentzian Lie group with the quasi-statistical structure associated to Bott connections, canonical connections and Kobayashi-Nomizu connections.
We discuss a gap in Besse's book, recently pointed out by Merton, which concerns the classification of Riemannian manifolds admitting a Codazzi tensors with exactly two distinct eigenvalues. For such manifolds, we prove a structure theorem, without adding extra hypotheses and then we conclude with some application of this theory to the classification of three-dimensional gradient Ricci solitons.
A decomposition theorem is established for a class of closed Riemannian submanifolds immersed in a space form of constant sectional curvature. In particular, it is shown that if $M$ has nonnegative sectional curvature and admits a Codazzi tensor with "parallel mean curvature", then $M$ is locally isometric to a direct product of irreducible factors determined by the spectrum of that tensor. This decomposition is global when $M$ is simply connected, and generalizes what is known for immersed submanifolds with parallel mean curvature vector.
We extend a classical result by Derdzinski and Shen, on the restrictions imposed on the Riemann tensor by the existence of a nontrivial Codazzi tensor. The new conditions of the theorem include Codazzi tensors (i.e. closed 1-forms) as well as tensors with gauged Codazzi condition (i.e. "recurrent 1-forms"), typical of some well known differential structures.
Using global considerations, Mess proved that the moduli space of globally hyperbolic flat Lorentzian structures on $S\times\mathbb{R}$ is the tangent bundle of the Teichmüller space of $S$, if $S$ is a closed surface. One of the goals of this paper is to deepen this surprising occurrence and to make explicit the relation between the Mess parameters and the embedding data of any Cauchy surface. This relation is pointed out by using some specific properties of Codazzi tensors on hyperbolic surfaces. As a by-product we get a new Lorentzian proof of Goldman's celebrated result about the coinciden…
Derdzinski and Shen's theorem on the restrictions posed by a Codazzi tensor on the Riemann tensor holds more generally when a Riemann-compatible tensor exists. Several properties are shown to remain valid in this broader setting. Riemann compatibility is equivalent to the Bianchi identity of the new "Codazzi deviation tensor" with a geometric significance. Examples are given of manifolds with Riemann-compatible tensors, in particular those generated by geodesic mapping. Compatibility is extended to generalized curvature tensors with an application to Weyl's tensor and general relativity.
We prove conformal versions of the local decomposition theorems of de Rham and Hiepko of a Riemannian manifold as a Riemannian or a warped product of Riemannian manifolds. Namely, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for a Riemannian manifold to be locally conformal to either a Riemannian or a warped product. We also obtain other related de Rham-type decomposition theorems. As an application, we study Riemannian manifolds that admit a Codazzi tensor with two distinct eigenvalues everywhere.
We prove new lower bounds for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on compact manifolds whose Weyl tensor or curvature tensor, respectively, is divergence free. In the special case of Einstein manifolds, we obtain estimates depending on the Weyl tensor.
We prove a new lower bound for the first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator on a compact Riemannian spin manifold by refined Weitzenböck techniques. It applies to manifolds with harmonic curvature tensor and depends on the Ricci tensor. Examples show how it behaves compared to other known bounds.
We review some recent results concerning lower eigenvalues estimates for the Dirac operator [6, 7]. We show that Friedrich's inequality can be improved via certain well-chosen symmetric tensors and provide an application to Sasakian spin manifolds.
We generalized Xiang, Qi and Wei's results on the M-eigenvalues of Riemann curvature tensor to higher dimensional conformal flat manifolds. The expression of M-eigenvalues and M-eigenvectors are found in our paper. As a special case, M-eigenvalues of conformal flat Einstein manifold have also been discussed, and the conformal the invariance of M-eigentriple has been found. We also discussed the relationship between M-eigenvalue and sectional curvature of a Riemannian manifold. We proved that the M-eigenvalue can determine the Riemann curvature tensor uniquely and generalize the real M-eigenval…
It is proved that a compact Kahler manifold whose Ricci tensor has two distinct, constant, non-negative eigenvalues is locally the product of two Kahler-Einstein manifolds. A stronger result is established for the case of Kahler surfaces. Irreducible Kahler manifolds with two distinct, constant eigenvalues of the Ricci tensor are shown to exist in various situations: there are homogeneous examples of any complex dimension n > 1, if one eigenvalue is negative and the other positive or zero, and of any complex dimension n > 2, if the both eigenvalues are negative; there are non-homogeneous examp…
We consider deformations of metrics in a given conformal class such that the smallest eigenvalue of the Ricci tensor to be a constant. It is related to the notion of minimal volumes in comparison geometry. Such a metric with the smallest eigenvalue of the Ricci tensor to be a constant is an extremal metric of volume in a suitable sense in the conformal class. The problem is reduced to solve a Pucci type equation with respect to the Schouten tensor. We establish a local gradient estimate for this type of conformally invariant fully nonlinear uniform elliptic equations. Combining it with the the…
Given a Riemmanian manifold, we provide a new method to compute a sharp upper bound for the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian for the Dirichlet problem on a geodesic ball of radius less than the injectivity radius of the manifold. This upper bound is obtained by transforming the metric tensor into a rotationally symmetric metric tensor that preserves the area of the geodesic spheres. The provided upper bound can be computed using only the area function of the geodesic spheres contained in the geodesic ball and it is sharp in the sense that the first eigenvalue of geodesic ball coincides with o…
The aim of this paper is to classify compact, simply connected Kähler manifolds which admit J-invariant Killing tensor with two eigenvalues of multiplicity 2 and n-2 and with constant eigenvalue corresponding to 2-dimensional eigendistribution.
As is known, the Blaschke tensor $A$ (a symmetric covariant $2$-tensor) is one of the fundamental Möbius invariants in the Möbius differential geometry of submanifolds in the unit sphere $\mathbb S^n$, and the eigenvalues of $A$ are referred to as the Blaschke eigenvalues. In this paper, we continue our job for the study on the submanifolds in $\bbs^n$ with parallel Blaschke tensors which we simply call {\em Blaschke parallel submanifolds} to find more examples and seek a complete classification finally. The main theorem of this paper is the classification of Blaschke parallel submanifolds in …
The Riemann curvature tensor is a central mathematical tool in Einstein's theory of general relativity. Its related eigenproblem plays an important role in mathematics and physics. We extend M-eigenvalues for the elasticity tensor to the Riemann curvature tensor. The definition of M-eigenproblem of the Riemann curvature tensor is introduced from the minimization of an associated function. The M-eigenvalues of the Riemann curvature tensor always exist and are real. They are invariants of the Riemann curvature tensor. The associated function of the Riemann curvature tensor is always positive at …
In this paper we study the problem of conformally deforming a metric to a prescribed symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Schouten tensor on compact Riemannian manifolds with boundary. We prove its solvability and the compactness of the solution set, provided the Ricci tensor is non-negative definite.
We study the problem of conformally deforming a metric to a prescribed symmetric function of the eigenvalues of the Ricci tensor. We prove an existence theorem for a wide class of symmetric functions on manifolds with positive Ricci curvature, provided the conformal class admits an admissible metric.
We argue that two dimensional classical SU(2) Yang-Mills theory describes the embedding of Riemann surfaces in three dimensional curved manifolds. Specifically, the Yang-Mills field strength tensor computes the Riemannian curvature tensor of the ambient space in a thin neighborhood of the surface. In this sense the two dimensional gauge theory then serves as a source of three dimensional gravity. In particular, if the three dimensional manifold is flat it corresponds to the vacuum of the Yang-Mills theory. This implies that all solutions to the original Gauss-Codazzi surface equations determin…
In Riemann geometry, the relations among two transversal submanifolds and global manifold are discussed. By replacing the normal vector of a submanifold with the tangent vector of another submanifold, the metric tensors, Christoffel symbols and curvature tensors of the three manifolds are linked together. When the inner product of the two tangent vectors vanishes, some corollaries of these relations give the most important second fundamental form and Gauss-Codazzi equation in the conventional submanifold theory. As a special case, the global manifold is Euclidean is considered. It is pointed o…
