A recent updated version of the Lanzhou quantum molecular dynamics is reviewed, in which the momentum dependence of symmetry potential and the effective mass splitting of proton and neutron in nuclear medium are included in the model. The in-medium nucleon-nucleon (NN) elastic cross sections are evaluated with the scaling approach according to the effective mass and their influence on collective flows in heavy-ion collisions are discussed. The inelastic cross sections, in particular for the process of the channel N$Δ\rightarrow$NN, are parameterized in accordance with the available experimental data. It is found that the in-medium cross sections play a significant role on isospin emissions and result in a flat distribution for transverse flows and elliptic flows of free nucleons comparing with the in-vacuum ones. The rapidity distribution of the difference between neutron and proton transverse flows is sensitive to the stiffness of nuclear symmetry energy as a promising observable, which can not be influenced by the in-medium effect and collision centrality. Furthermore, the elliptic flow of free energetic nucleons in the case of the mass splitting of $m_{n}^{\ast}>m_{p}^{\ast}$ is also related to the symmetry energy. However, the pion flows weakly depend on the symmetry energy and the mass splitting.
Contractions of orthogonal groups to Euclidean groups are applied to analytic descriptions of nuclear quantum phase transitions. The semiclassical asymptotic of multipole collective Hamiltonians are also investigated.
Rigidities of even-even nuclei were estimated and compared with nuclear charge radii. Correlation of maximal nuclear rigidities with minimal values of r0 parameters was revealed. Influence of effective surface tension on nuclear properties was discussed.
Exact canonically conjugate momenta Pi_{2mu} in quadrupole nuclear collective motions are proposed. The basic idea lies in the introduction of a discrete integral equation for the strict definition of canonically conjugate momenta to collective variables phi_{2mu}. A part of our collective Hamiltonian, the Pi_{2mu}-dependence of the kinetic part of the Hamiltonian, is given exactly. Further, phi_{2mu}-dependence of the kinetic part of the Hamiltonian is also given.
The main result of this study consists in working out a microscopic description of collective motion in hot nuclei, allowing to express the parameters of a phenomenological collective model in terms of nucleonic quantities.
The nuclear collective excitations are studied within Landau Fermi liquid theory. By using the nucleon-nucleon interaction of the linear sigma-omega model, the nuclear collective excitation energies of different values of $l$ are obtained, which are fitted with the centroid energies of the giant resonances of spherical nuclei, respectively. In addition, it is pointed out that the isovector giant resonances except l=1 correspond to the modes that protons are in the creation state and neutrons are in the annihilation state, and vice versa. Some mixtures of the nuclear collective excitation state…
In this paper the possibility of the excitation of collective nuclear motion with attosecond laser pulses is investigated. Following our earlier results (Lasers in Engineering 11 (2001) p. 259) the hyperbolic heat transport for nuclear matter is formulated and solved. It is shown that in the vicinity of the 30 MeV excitation energy the recollided electrons can excite the giant collective motions - thermal wave inside the nuclei. Key words: Attosecond laser pulses; Electronuclear reactions; Thermal waves; Giant Resonances.
In this paper, we review the roles of collective modes in nuclear reactions. We emphaize the strong couplings of various collective states with the monopole and quadrupole motions. In inelastic excitation, these couplings can be seen as an important source of anharmonicity in the multiphonon spectrum. In fusion reaction, the breathing and quadrupole motions strongly affects the oscillation of protons against neutrons. Finally, the modification of the collective properties induced by a large amplitude dilution might be the origin of the nuclear multifragmentation, directly related to the nuclea…
Basing on the Bohr collective quadrupole Hamiltonian the $A$-dependence of the Grodzins product is derived and the proportionality coefficient for the Grodzins relation is evaluated. The result obtained is in a correspondence with the experimental data.
The collective excitation of nuclear matter is analyzed in a bosonized Landau Fermi liquid model. When the nonlinear self-interacting terms of scalar mesons are included in Walecka model, the collective excitation energy of nuclear matter can be obtained self-consistently, and the calculation results are consistent with the corresponding experimental data of the nucleus ${}^{208}Pb$ when the quantum number of the orientation of the total spin $m$ is zero. The cases with the nonzero $m$ values are also studied, and it is found that the collective excitation energy of nuclear matter decreases wi…
We study isovector collective excitations in nuclear matter by employing the linearized Landau-Vlasov equation with and without a non-Markovian binary collision term at finite temperature. We calculate the giant dipole resonance (GDR) strength function for finite nuclei using Steinwedel-Jensen model and also by Thomas-Fermi approximation, and we compare them for 120Sn and 208Pb with experimental results.
In a nucleus which has two Hartree states deformed in quadrupole symmetry, i.e., prolate state and oblate state, the nuclear residual interaction derived in the present theory beyond the Hartree approximation acts as the restoring force for the spherical symmetry of the nuclear system to be recovered so that the deformed nucleus makes collective tunneling transitions between prolate states and oblate states. We derive the Hamiltonian that is effective not only for the Hartree states but also for the collective tunneling transitions between the Hartree states. Solving the secular equation for t…
We apply a new calculation scheme of a finite element method (FEM) for solving an elliptic boundary-value problem describing a quadrupole vibration collective nuclear model with tetrahedral symmetry. We use of shape functions constructed with interpolation Lagrange polynomials on a triangle finite element grid and compare the FEM results with obtained early by a finite difference method.
We review the theory of nuclear collective vibrations evolved over decades from phenomenological quasiclassical picture to sophisticated microscopic approaches. The major focus is put on the underlying microscopic mechanisms of emergent effects, which define the properties of giant resonances and soft modes. The response of atomic nuclei to electromagnetic and weak fields is discussed in detail. Astrophysical implications of the giant resonances and soft modes are outlined.
The shell model Monte Carlo (SMMC) approach allows for the microscopic calculation of statistical and collective properties of heavy nuclei using the framework of the configuration-interaction shell model in very large model spaces. We present recent applications of the SMMC method to the calculation of state densities and their collective enhancement factors in rare-earth nuclei.
The relation between collective modes and the phase transition in low density nuclear matter is examined. The dispersion relations for collective modes in a linear approach are evaluated within a Landau-Fermi liquid scheme by assuming coexisting phases in thermodynamical equilibrium. Temperature and isospin composition are taken as relevant parameters. The in-medium nuclear interaction is taken from a recently proposed density functional model. We found significative modifications in the energy spectrum, within certain range of temperatures and isospin asymmetry, due to the separation of matte…
The recent progress on the study of the collective excitation in relativistic nuclear matter is reviewed. The collective excitation modes are derived by meson propagators in nuclear matter. The mesons we study are $σ, ω, γ$ and $π$ mesons. For pion, we derived not only the relativistic particle - hole, delta - hole excitations but also antiparticle excitations, such as particle - antiparticle, antidelta - particle, delta - antiparticle excitations. By calculating the dispersion relation and the spin - isospin dependent response function, the effects of all these excitation are studied.
The nuclear collective models introduced by Bohr, Mottelson and Rainwater, together with the Mayer-Jensen shell model, have provided the central framework for the development of nuclear physics. This paper reviews the microscopic evolution of the collective models and their underlying foundations. In particular, it is shown that the Bohr-Mottelson models have expressions as macroscopic limits of microscopic models that have precisely-defined expressions in many-nucleon quantum mechanics. Understanding collective models in this way is especially useful because it enables the analysis of nuclear…
The status of the macroscopic and microscopic description of the collective quadrupole modes is reviewed, where limits due to non-adiabaticity and decoherence are exposed. The microscopic description of the yrast states in vibrator-like nuclei in the framework of the rotating mean field is presented.
Collective mass tensor derived from the cranking approximation to the adiabatic time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (ATDHFB) approach is compared with that obtained in the Gaussian Overlap Approximation (GOA) to the generator coordinate method. Illustrative calculations are carried out for one-dimensional quadrupole fission pathways in 256Fm. It is shown that the collective mass exhibits strong variations with the quadrupole collective coordinate. These variations are related to the changes in the intrinsic shell structure. The differences between collective inertia obtained in cranking and…
For nuclear level densities, a modification of an enhanced generalized superfluid model with different collective state enhancement factors is studied. An effect of collective states on forming the temperature is taken into account. The ready-to-use tables for the asymptotic value of $a$-parameter of level density as well as for addition shift to excitation energy are prepared using the chi-square fit of the theoretical values of neutron resonance spacing and cumulative number of low-energy levels to experimental values. The systematics of these parameters as a function of mass number and neut…
In the framework of mean-field based transport approaches, we discuss recent results concerning collective motion and low-energy heavy ion reactions involving neutron-rich systems. We focus on aspects which are particularly sensitive to the isovector terms of the nuclear effective interaction and the corresponding symmetry energy. As far as collective excitations are concerned, we discuss the mixed nature of dipole oscillations in neutron-rich systems. On the other hand, for reactions close to the Coulomb barrier, we investigate the structure of pre-equilibrium collective dipole oscillations, …
The discovery of the atomic electric dipole moment (EDM) would reveal the simultaneous violation of parity (P) and time-reversal (T) invariance. The EDM can be induced by T-odd forces between the nucleus and atomic electrons. As the nuclear dipole moment is screened according to the Schiff theorem, the appropriate nuclear operator is the Schiff moment that may exist in nuclei under PT-violation. We briefly review the current experimental situation and discuss more in detail the ideas concerning possible collective mechanisms for the enhancement of the nuclear Schiff moment. The most promising …
Towards the microscopic theoretical description for large amplitude collective dynamics, we calculate the coefficients of inertial masses for low-energy nuclear reactions. Under the scheme of energy density functional, we apply the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate (ASCC) method, as well as the Inglis' cranking formula to calculate the inertias for the translational and the relative motions, in addition to those for the rotational motion. Taking the scattering between two $α$ particles as an example, we investigate the impact of the time-odd components of the mean-field potential…
Isoscalar collective modes in a relativistic meson-nucleon system are investigated in the framework of the time-dependent Thomas-Fermi method. The energies of the collective modes are determined by solving consistently the dispersion relations and the boundary conditions. The energy weighted sum rule satisfied by the model allows the identification of the giant ressonances. The percentage of the energy weighted sum rule exhausted by the collective modes is in agreement with experimental data, but the energies come too high.
In this note we concentrate on slow collective motion of isoscalar type at small but finite excitations, as given in nuclear fission, for instance. We report on microscopic results of transport coefficients, review how they depend on temperature and address the interplay of one and two body viscosity. We examine how transport properties might be influenced by chaotic behavior of nucleonic dynamics.
We present the basic concepts and our recent developments in the density functional approaches with the Skyrme functionals for describing nuclear dynamics at low energy. The time-dependent density-functional theory (TDDFT) is utilized for the exact linear response with an external perturbation. For description of collective dynamics beyond the perturbative regime, we present a theory of a decoupled collective submanifold to describe for a slow motion based on the TDDFT. Selected applications are shown to demonstrate the quality of their performance and feasibility. Advantages and disadvantages…
A detailed derivation of the collisional widths of collective vibrations is presented in both quantal and semi-classical frameworks by considering the linearized limits of the extended TDHF and the BUU model with a non-Markovian binary collision term. Damping widths of giant dipole and giant quadrupole excitations are calculated by employing an effective Skyrme force, and the results are compared with GDR measurements in Lead and Tin nuclei at finite temperature.
The coupled dynamics of low lying modes and various giant resonances are studied with the help of the Wigner Function Moments method on the basis of Time Dependent Hartree-Fock equations in the harmonic oscillator model including spin-orbit potential plus quadrupole-quadrupole and spin-spin residual interactions. New low lying spin dependent modes are analyzed. Special attention is paid to the spin scissors mode.
The bosonic excitations induced by the omega meson propagation in dense nuclear matter is studied within the framework of random phase approximation. The collective modes are then analyzed by finding the zeros of the relevant dielectric functions. Subsequently we present closed form analytical expressions for the dispersion relations in different kinematical regime. Next, the analytical behaviour of the in-medium effective propagator for the omega meson is examined. This is exploited to calculate the full spectral function for the transverse (T) and longitudinal (L) mode of the omega meson. In…
The general problem of dissipation in macroscopic large-amplitude collective motion and its relation to energy diffusion of intrinsic degrees of freedom of a nucleus is studied. By applying the cranking approach to the nuclear many-body system, a set of coupled dynamical equations for the collective classical variable and the quantum mechanical occupancies of the intrinsic nuclear states is derived. Different dynamical regimes of the intrinsic nuclear motion and its consequences on time properties of collective dissipation are discussed.
The global correlation in the observed variation with mass number of the $E2$ and summed $M1$ transition strengths is examined for rare earth nuclei. It is shown that a theory of correlated $S$ and $D$ fermion pairs with a simple pairing plus quadrupole interaction leads naturally to this universality. Thus a unified and quantitative description emerges for low-lying quadrupole and dipole strengths.
Collective inertial mass coefficients with respect to translational, relative, and rotational motions are microscopically calculated, along the collective reaction path self-consistently determined, based on the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate (ASCC) method. The impact of the time-odd component of the mean-field potential on the inertial masses are investigated. The results are compared with those calculated with the cranking formulae. The inertial masses based on the ASCC method reproduce the exact total nuclear mass for the translational motion as well as the exact reduced ma…
The Unitary Correlation Operator Method (UCOM) provides a means for nuclear structure calculations starting from realistic NN potentials. The dominant short-range central and tensor correlations are described explicitly by a unitary transformation. The application of UCOM in the context of the no-core shell model provides insight into the interplay between dominant short-range and residual long-range correlations in the nuclear many-body problem. The use of the correlated interaction within Hartree-Fock, many-body perturbation theory, and Random Phase Approximation gives access to various nucl…
Collective reaction paths for fusion reactions, $^{16}$O+$α$ $\rightarrow$ $^{20}$Ne and $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O $\rightarrow$ $^{32}$S, are microscopically determined, on the basis of the adiabatic self-consistent collective coordinate (ASCC) method. The collective path is maximally decoupled from other intrinsic degrees of freedom. The reaction paths turn out to deviate from those obtained with standard mean-field calculations with constraints on quadrupole and octupole moments. The potentials and inertial masses defined in the ASCC method are calculated along the reaction paths. The sub-barrier f…
We consider a slab of nuclear matter and investigate the collective excitations, which develop in the response function of the system. We introduce a finite-range realistic interaction among the nucleons, which reproduces the full G-matrix by a linear combination of gaussian potentials in the various spin-isospin channels. We then analyze the collective modes of the slab in the S=T=1 channel: for moderate momenta hard and soft zero-sound modes are found, which exhaust most of the excitation strength. At variance with the results obtained with a zero range force, new "massive" excitations are f…
The residual part of the realistic forces ---obtained after extracting the monopole terms responsible for bulk properties--- is strongly dominated by pairing and quadrupole interactions, with important $στ\cdotστ$, octupole and hexadecapole contributions. Their forms differ from the schematic ones through normalizations that lead to a universal $A^{-1/3}$ scaling for all multipoles. Coupling strengths and effective charges are calculated and shown to agree with the observed values.
Hydrodynamics is applied to describe the dynamics of relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The focus of the present study is the influence of a possible (phase) transition to the quark-gluon plasma in the nuclear matter equation of state on collective observables, such as the lifetime of the system and the transverse directed flow of matter. It is shown that such a transition leads to a softening of the equation of state, and consequently to a time-delayed expansion which is in principle observable via two-particle correlation functions. Moreover, the delayed expansion leads to a local minimum in…
A remarkably simple regularity in the energies of 0+ states in a broad class of collective models is discussed. A single formula for all 0+ states in flat-bottomed infinite potentials that depends only on the number of dimensions and a simpler expression applicable to all three IBA symmetries in the large boson number limit are presented. Finally, a connection between the energy expression for 0+ states given by the X(5) model and the predictions of the IBA near the critical point is explored.
This contribution reviews the present status on the available constraints to the nuclear equation of state (EoS) around saturation density from nuclear structure calculations on ground and collective excited state properties of atomic nuclei. It concentrates on predictions based on self-consistent mean-field calculations, which can be considered as an approximate realization of an exact energy density functional (EDF). EDFs are derived from effective interactions commonly fitted to nuclear masses, charge radii and, in many cases, also to pseudo-data such as nuclear matter properties. Although …
In-medium nucleon-nucleon scattering cross sections are explored by comparing results of quantum molecular dynamics simulations to data on stopping and on elliptic and directed flow in intermediate-energy heavy-ion collisions. The comparison points to in-medium cross sections which are suppressed at low energies but not at higher energies. Positive correlations are found between the degree of stopping and the magnitudes of elliptic and directed flows.
A geometrical model for tri-nuclear molecules is presented. An analytical solution is obtained provided the nuclei, which are taken to be prolately deformed, are connected in line to each other. Furthermore, the tri-nuclear molecule is composed of two heavy and one light cluster, the later sandwiched between the two heavy clusters. A basis is constructed in which Hamiltonians of more general configurations can be diagonalized. In the calculation of the interaction between the clusters higher multipole deformations are taken into account, including the hexadecupole one. A repulsive nuclear core…
We use the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck model to simulate the dynamical evolution of heavy ion collisions and to compare the effects of two parametrizations of the momentum--dependent nuclear mean field that have identical properties in cold nuclear matter. We compare with recent data on nuclear flow, as characterized by transverse momentum distributions and flow ($F$) variables for symmetric and asymmetric systems. We find that the precise functional dependence of the nuclear mean field on the particle momentum is important. With our approach, we also confirm that the difference between symmet…
A systematic study of the in-medium correction factor ($F$) on nucleon-nucleon elastic cross section is performed within the Ultra-relativistic Quantum Molecular Dynamics (UrQMD) model. The effects of the beam energy dependence of $F$ on the directed, elliptic flow and nuclear stopping in $^{197}$Au+$^{197}$Au collisions with energy ranging from $0.09$ to $0.8A$ GeV are explored. It is found that the directed, elliptic flow and nuclear stopping at relatively low energies are very sensitive to $F$, and the sensitivity gradually weakens with increasing beam energy. The beam energy dependent in-m…
The general problem of dissipation in macroscopic large-amplitude collective motion and its relation to energy diffusion of intrinsic degrees of freedom of a nucleus is studied. By applying the cranking approach to the nuclear many body system, a set of coupled dynamical equations for the collective classical variables and the quantum mechanical occupancies of the intrinsic nuclear states is derived. Different dynamical regimes of the intrinsic nuclear motion and its consequences on time properties of collective dissipation are discussed. The approach is applied to the descant of the nucleus f…
The (semi-)microscopic double-folding nucleus-nucleus optical potentials are suggested for consideration of inelastic scattering with excitation of collective nuclear states by using the adiabatic approach and the elastic scattering amplitude in the high-energy approximation. The analytical expression for inelastic scattering amplitude is obtained keeping the first order terms in the deformation parameter of a potential. Calculations of inelastic cross sections for the $^{17}$O heavy ions scattered on different nuclei at about hundred Mev/nucleon are made, and the acceptable qualitative agreem…
These conferences proceedings summarize the experimental findings of collective effects in nuclear collisions, as presented at the Quark Matter 2018 conference.
A phenomenological optical potential is generalized to include the Coulomb and nuclear interactions caused by the dynamical deformation of its surface. In the high-energy approach analytical expressions for elastic and inelastic scattering amplitudes are obtained where all the orders in the deformation parameters are included. The multistep effect of the 2$^+$ rotational state excitation on elastic scattering is analyzed. Calculations of inelastic cross sections for the $^{17}$O ions scattered on different nuclei at about hundred Mev/nucleon are compared with experimental data, and important r…
The goal of the present account is to review our efforts to obtain and apply a ``collective'' Hamiltonian for a few, approximately decoupled, adiabatic degrees of freedom, starting from a Hamiltonian system with more or many more degrees of freedom. The approach is based on an analysis of the classical limit of quantum-mechanical problems. Initially, we study the classical problem within the framework of Hamiltonian dynamics and derive a fully self-consistent theory of large amplitude collective motion with small velocities. We derive a measure for the quality of decoupling of the collective d…
An abrupt change in $α$ decay systematics around the N=126 neutron shell closure is discussed. It is explained as a sudden hindrance of the clustering of the nucleons that eventually form the $α$ particle. This is because the clustering induced by the pairing mode acting upon the four nucleons is inhibited if the configuration space does not allow a proper manifestation of the pairing collectivity.
To describe quantal collective phenomena, it is useful to requantize the time-dependent mean-field dynamics. We study the time-dependent Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (TDHFB) theory for the two-level pairing Hamiltonian, and compare results of different quantization methods. The one constructing microscopic wave functions, using the TDHFB trajectories fulfilling the Einstein-Brillouin-Keller quantization condition, turns out to be the most accurate. The method is based on the stationary-phase approximation to the path integral. We also examine the performance of the collective model which assumes th…
The nuclear landscape has been investigated within the triaxial relativistic Hartree-Bogoliubov theory with the PC-PK1 density functional, and the beyond-mean-field dynamical correlation energies are taken into account by a microscopically mapped five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian without additional free parameters. The effects of triaxial deformation and dynamical correlations on the nuclear landscape are analyzed. The present results provide the best description of the experimental binding energies, in particular for medium and heavy mass regions, in comparison with the results obtained…
Model independent, $m_1$, adiabatic, $m_{-1}$, and high-energy, $m_3$, energy weighted sums for the isoscalar and isovector nuclear excitations are investigated within the framework of the kinetic theory adopted to the description of a two-component nuclear Fermi-liquid. For both the adiabatic and scaling approaches, the connection of the EWS $m_{-1}$ and $m_3$ to the nuclear stiffness coefficients and the first- and zero-sound velocity is established. We study the enhancement factor $κ_{I}$ in the energy weighted sum $m'_1$ for the isovector excitations and provide the reasonable explanation …
A recapitulatory analysis of total nuclear cross sections of various nuclei is presented, which yields detailed knowledge on the different physical processes such as potential/resonance scatter and nuclear reactions. The physical base for potential/resonance scatter and the threshold energy resulting from Coulomb repulsion of nuclei are collective/oscillator models. The part pertaining to the nuclear reactions can only be determined by the microscopic theory (Schrödinger equation and strong interactions). The physical impact is the fluence decrease of proton beams in different media and the sc…
The Faddeev technique is employed to study the influence of both particle-particle and particle-hole phonons on the one-hole spectral function of 16O. The formalism includes the effects of nuclear fragmentation and accounts for collective excitations at a random phase approximation (RPA) level. The latter are subsequently summed to all orders by the Faddeev equations to obtain the nucleon self-energy. The results indicate that the characteristics of hole fragmentation are related to the low-lying states of 16O and an improvement of the description of this spectrum is required to understand the…
