The high energy asymptotics of QCD correlation functions is often used as a test for bottom-up holographic models. Since QCD is not strongly coupled in the ultraviolet domain, such a test may look questionable. We propose that the sum over resonance poles emerging in correlators of a bottom-up model should reproduce the structure of a Veneziano like amplitude at zero momentum transfer assuming equivalence of spin and radial states in the latter. This requires a five-dimensional background that suppresses the ultraviolet part in the effective action of a model. We give examples of emerging low-energy holographic models.
The formulae describing the radiative decays $η'(η)\rta\c\c$ in QCD beyond the chiral limit are derived. The modifications of the conventional PCAC formulae due to the gluonic contribution to the axial anomaly in the flavour singlet channel are precisely described. The decay constants are found to satisfy a modified Dashen formula which generalises the Witten--Veneziano formula for the mass of the $η'$. Combining these results, it is shown how the topological susceptibility in QCD with massive, dynamical quarks may be extracted from measurements of $η'(η)\rta\c\c$.
In this short note, we come back to the recent proposal put forward by Kharzeev and Levin [PRL 114 (2015) 24, 242001], in which they phenomenologically couple the non-perturbative Veneziano ghost to the perturbative gluon, leading to a modified gluon propagator (the "glost") of the Gribov type, with complex poles. As such, a possible link was made between the QCD topological θ-vacuum (Veneziano ghost) and color confinement (no physically observable gluons). We discuss some subtleties concerning gauge (BRST) invariance of this proposal, related to the choice of Feynman gauge. We furthermore pro…
A hypothesis is put forward that in the case of low-energy QCD, the holographic prescription for calculating the correlation functions may lead to the dual scattering amplitudes of Veneziano type at zero momentum transfer if the non-conformality is properly taken into account. A concrete example is proposed that demonstrates the idea.
QCD at finite, flavor independent quark mass is analyzed by using bottom-up holography in the Veneziano limit, where the backreaction of quarks to the gluon dynamics is fully included. The dependence on the quark mass of observables such as the bound state masses, the chiral condensate, the S-parameter, and the critical temperatures is studied. Many of the results are argued to be universal, i.e., independent of the details of the holographic model, and compared to explicit computations in the V-QCD models. The effect of adding four-fermion operators in QCD is also discussed.
We consider four scalar mesons scattering in large-Nc QCD. Using the worldline formalism we show that the scattering amplitude can be written as a formal sum over Wilson loops. The AdS/CFT correspondence maps this sum into a sum over string worldsheets in a confining background. We then argue that for well separated mesons the sum is dominated by flat space configurations. Under additional assumptions about the dual string path integral we obtain the Veneziano amplitude.
Solving the properties of dense QCD matter is an extremely challenging problem because standard theoretical tools do not work at intermediate densities. The gauge/gravity duality may help to provide answers in this region. I give a brief review of recent progress in this field, focusing on the V-QCD model, which is one of the most sophisticated holographic models of QCD. I discuss predictions for the phase diagram, the equation of state, and properties of baryons. I apply these results to analyze the properties of neutron stars and to quark matter production in neutron star mergers.
We discuss holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit (the V-QCD models), concentrating on phenomena near the "conformal" phase transition taking place at a critical value of the ratio x = N_f/N_c. In particular, we review the results for the S-parameter, the technidilaton, and the masses of the mesons.
We initiate the study of Regge theory in a bottom-up holographic model for QCD in the Veneziano limit, where the backreaction of the quarks to the gluon dynamics is included. We determine the parameters of the model by carrying out a precise fit to the meson spectrum in QCD. The spectrum for spin-one and pseudoscalar mesons is well reproduced. We then generalise the model to incluce higher spin fields in the bulk trajectories dual to the Pomeron and meson Regge trajectories at the boundary. With this setting, we fit the masses of the mesons with spins $J=2$, $3$, and $4$,as well as the experim…
In this note we report on the analysis of the zero temperature spectra of glueballs and mesons for holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit. We work within a holographic bottom-up model named V-QCD which takes into account the full backreaction of the flavor degrees of freedom. By studying the fluctuations of this model we compute spectra of mesons and glueballs as a function of x=N_f/N_c. The spectra are discrete and gapped (modulo the pions) in the QCD regime, where x is below the critical value x_c at which the conformal transition takes place. The masses uniformly converge to zero in the wal…
We revisit the $U(1)_A$ anomaly in the holographic model of low-energy QCD by Witten, Sakai, and Sugimoto, presenting a new and direct derivation of the Witten-Veneziano mechanism for generating the mass of the $η'$ through an anomalous mixing of the Ramond-Ramond $C_1$ field with the singlet component of the pseudoscalar mesons. The latter turns out to have a kinetic mixing with the normalizable modes of the $C_1$ field representing pseudoscalar glueballs, yielding additional vertices for their production and their decay that dominate over those of the unmixed case considered previously in th…
We propose a holographic computation of the $2\rightarrow 2$ meson scattering in a curved string background, dual to a QCD-like theory. We recover the Veneziano amplitude and compute a perturbative correction due to the background curvature. The result implies a small deviation from a linear trajectory, which is a requirement of the UV regime of QCD.
We construct a class of bottom-up holographic models with physics comparable to the one expected from QCD in the Veneziano limit of large N_f and N_c with fixed x = N_f/N_c. The models capture the holographic dynamics of the dilaton (dual to the YM coupling) and a tachyon (dual to the chiral condensate), and are parametrized by the real parameter x, which can take values within the range 0 <= x < 11/2. We analyze the saddle point solutions, and draw the phase diagram at zero temperature and density. The backreaction of flavor on the glue is fully included. We find the conformal window for x >=…
Based on the Veneziano ghost theory of QCD, we estimate the cosmological constant $Λ$, which is related to the vacuum energy density, $ρ_Λ$, by $Λ= 8πG ρ_Λ$. In the recent Veneziano ghost theory $ρ_Λ$ is given by the absolute value of the product of the local quark condensate and quark current mass:$ρ_Λ = \frac{2N_{f}H}{m_{η'}}c |m_{q}<0|:\bar{q}q:|0>|$. By solving Dyson-Schwinger Equations for a dressed quark propagator, we found the local quark condensate $<0|:\bar{q}q:|0> \simeq -(235 MeV)^{3}$, the generally accepted value. The quark current mass is $m_{q} \simeq$ 4.0 Mev. This gives the s…
We investigate the phase diagram of QCD-like gauge theories at strong coupling at finite magnetic field $B$, temperature $T$ and baryon chemical potential $μ$ using the improved holographic QCD model including the full backreaction of the quarks in the plasma. In addition to the phase diagram we study the behavior of the quark condensate as a function of $T$, $B$ and $μ$ and discuss the fate of (inverse) magnetic catalysis at finite $μ$. In particular we observe that inverse magnetic catalysis exists only for small values of the baryon chemical potential. The speed of sound in this holographic…
We study the dependence of the chiral condensate on external magnetic field in the context of holographic QCD at large number of flavors. We consider a holographic QCD model where the flavor degrees of freedom fully backreact on the color dynamics. Perturbative QCD calculations have shown that $B$ acts constructively on the chiral condensate, a phenomenon called "magnetic catalysis". In contrast, recent lattice calculations show that, depending on the number of flavors and temperature, the magnetic field may also act destructively, which is called "inverse magnetic catalysis". Here we show tha…
We use the holographic V-QCD models to analyse the physics of dense QCD and neutron stars. Accommodating lattice results for thermodynamics of QCD enables us to make generic predictions for the Equation of State (EoS) of the quark matter phase in the cold and dense regime. We demonstrate that the resulting pressure in V-QCD matches well with a family of neutron-star-matter EoSs that interpolate between state-of-the-art theoretical results for low and high density QCD. After implementing the astrophysical constraints, i.e., the largest known neutron star mass and the recent LIGO/Virgo results f…
Holographic models in the T=0 universality class of QCD in the limit of large number N_c of colors and N_f massless fermion flavors, but constant ratio x_f=N_f/N_c, are analyzed at finite temperature. The models contain a 5-dimensional metric and two scalars, a dilaton sourcing TrF^2 and a tachyon dual to \bar qq. The phase structure on the T,x_f plane is computed and various 1st order, 2nd order transitions and crossovers with their chiral symmetry properties are identified. For each x_f, the temperature dependence of p/T^4 and the quark-antiquark -condensate is computed. In the simplest case…
We consider the U(1) problem within the AdS/CFT framework. We explain how the Witten-Veneziano formula for the eta' mass is related to a generalized Green-Schwarz mechanism. The closed string mode, that cancels the anomaly of the gauged U(1) axial symmetry, is identified with the eta' meson. In a particular set-up of D3-branes on a C3/(Z3xZ3) orbifold singularity, the eta' meson is a twisted-sector R-R field.
YM and QCD are known to be renormalizable, but not ultraviolet finite, order by order in perturbation theory. It is a fundamental question as to whether YM or QCD are ultraviolet finite, or only renormalizable, order by order in the large-N 't Hooft or Veneziano expansions. We demonstrate that Renormalization Group and Asymptotic Freedom imply that in 't Hooft large-N expansion the S-matrix in YM is ultraviolet finite, while in both 't Hooft and Veneziano large-N expansions the S-matrix in confining QCD with massless quarks is renormalizable but not ultraviolet finite. By the same argument it …
A holographic model of QCD in the limit of large number of colors, $N_c$, and massless fermion flavors, $N_f$, but constant ratio $x_f=N_f/N_c$ is analyzed at finite temperature and chemical potential. The five dimensional gravity model contains three bulk fields: a scalar dilaton sourcing ${\rm Tr}F^2$, a scalar tachyon dual to $\bar qq$ and a 4-vector dual to the baryon current $\bar q γ^μ q$. The main result is the $μ,T$ phase diagram of the holographic theory. A first order deconfining transition along $T_h(μ)$ and a chiral transition at $T_χ(μ)>T_h(μ)$ are found. The chiral transition is …
Using the trace anomaly and low energy relations, as well as the Witten-Veneziano formula for the mass of the $η'$ meson, we have developed a formalism which makes it possible to express the gluon condensate, the topological susceptibility and the mass of the $η'$ meson as a functions of the truly nonperturbative vacuum energy density which is one of the most important characteristics of the QCD true ground state. It was directly applied to the numerical evaluation of the chiral QCD vacuum topological structure within its quantum zero momentum modes enhancement model. A rather good agreement w…
We first suppose that low-energy hadron pair photoproduction reactions gamma(*) gamma(*) -> h h-bar are dominated by s-channel resonance contributions. Their normalization is then calculated by their correspondence with the Reggeon term in the Regge parametrization of the gamma h total cross sections. For the case of p p-bar, we make use of the measured gamma p total cross section, and for the case of K+K-, we make use of the corresponding total cross section that is estimated using Regge factorization. For hadrons that have no such data, we can only provide rough estimation based on the addit…
We suggest that the solution to the cosmological vacuum energy puzzle is linked to the infrared sector of the effective theory of gravity interacting with standard model fields, with QCD fields specifically. We work in the framework of low energy quantum gravity as an effective field theory. In particular, we compute the vacuum energy in terms of QCD parameters and the Hubble constant $H$ such that the vacuum energy is $ε_{vac} \sim H \cdot m_q\la\bar{q}q\ra /m_{η'} \sim (3.6\cdot 10^{-3} \text{eV})^4$, which is amazingly close to the observed value today. The QCD ghost (responsible for the so…
The QCD formulae for the radiative decays $η,η'\to\c\c$, and the corresponding Dashen--Gell-Mann--Oakes--Renner relations, differ from conventional PCAC results due to the gluonic $U(1)_A$ axial anomaly. This introduces a critical dependence on the gluon topological susceptibility. In this paper, we revisit our earlier theoretical analysis of radiative pseudoscalar decays and the DGMOR relations and extract explicit experimental values for the decay constants. This is our main result. The flavour singlet DGMOR relation is the generalisation of the Witten-Veneziano formula beyond large $N_c$, s…
We consider quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with Nc colors and Nf quark flavors at finite quark chemical potential mu_q or isospin chemical potential mu_I. We specifically address the nature of the ``Silver Blaze'' behavior in the framework of 1/Nc expansion. Starting with the QCD partition function, we implement Veneziano's Nf/Nc expansion to identify the density onset. We find the baryon mass M_B and the pion mass m_pi appearing from different order of Veneziano's expansion. We argue that the confining properties are responsible for the Silver Blaze in the region of m_pi/2 < mu_q < M_B/Nc. We p…
We discuss the phenomenological implications of assuming a Veneziano-type spectrum for the vector and axial-vector two-point functions in QCD at large Nc. We also compare the phenomenological results with those of Lowest-Meson Dominance, and find that they agree.
This paper focuses on some issues about condensates and renormalization in AdS/QCD models. In particular we consider the consistency of the AdS/QCD approach for scale dependent quantities as the chiral condensate questioned in some recent papers and the 4D meaning of the 5D cosmological constant in a model in which the QCD is dual to a 5D gravity theory. We will be able to give some arguments that the cosmological constant is related to the QCD gluon condensate.
The holographic model of V-QCD is used to analyze the physics of QCD in the Veneziano large-N limit. An unprecedented analysis of the CP-odd physics is performed going beyond the level of effective field theories. The structure of holographic saddle-points at finite $θ$ is determined, as well as its interplay with chiral symmetry breaking. Many observables (vacuum energy and higher-order susceptibilities, singlet and non-singlet masses and mixings) are computed as functions of $θ$ and the quark mass $m$. Wherever applicable the results are compared to those of chiral Lagrangians, finding agree…
AdS/QCD is an extra-dimensional approach to modeling the light hadronic resonances in QCD. AdS/QCD models are generally successful at reproducing low-energy observables with around 10-20% accuracy, depending on the details of the model. We discuss the motivation for these models, their intrinsic limitations, and some recent results.
In this paper the quark zero modes creation effect is studied in the context of the AdS/QCD approach. This effect is generated, in presence of instantons, by a new that can be added in the bulk.
The AdS/QCD holographic wave function of basis light-front quantization (BLFQ) for vector meson $J/ψ$ is applied in this manuscript. The exclusive production of $J/ψ$ in diffractive process is computed in dipole model with AdS/QCD holographic wave function. We use IP-Sat and IIM model in the calculation of the differential cross section of the dipole scattering off the proton. The prediction of AdS/QCD holographic wave function in BLFQ gives a good agreement to the experimental data.
We present a study of electroexcitation of nucleon resonances with higher spins, in a soft-wall AdS/QCD model, comparing our results with existing data from the CLAS Collaboration at JLab, from MAMI, and other experiments.
The mass spectrum of Delta resonances is compared to predictions based on three quark-model variants, to predictions assuming that chiral symmetry is restored in high-mass baryon resonances, and to predictions derived from AdS/QCD. The latter approach yields a nearly perfect agreement when the confinement property of QCD is modeled by a soft wall in AdS.
We demonstrate another success of the AdS/QCD correspondence by showing that an AdS/QCD holographic light-front wavefunction for the $ρ$ meson generates predictions for the cross-sections of diffractive $ρ$ production that are in agreement with data collected at the HERA electron-proton collider.
We investigate the transverse charge densities of the deuteron in a soft-wall AdS/QCD model by considering both the unpolarized and the transversely polarized cases. The deuteron form factors are derived from the soft-wall AdS/QCD model and it is shown that the calculated results agree with the phenomenological parametrization and experimental data. The transverse charge densities of the deuteron are also derived from the soft-wall AdS/QCD model, and we notice slight deviations from those of the phenomenological parametrization.
Chiral symmetry is an essential concept in understanding QCD at low energy. We treat the chiral condensate, which measures the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry, as a free parameter to investigate the effect of partially restored chiral symmetry on the physical quantities in the frame work of an AdS/QCD model. We observe an interesting scaling behavior among the nucleon mass, pion decay constant and chiral condensate. We propose a phenomenological way to introduce the temperature dependence of a physical quantity in the AdS/QCD model with the thermal AdS metric.
In this work, we consider an extension to the matching procedure proposed by Brodsky and de Teramond to obtain the two-body wave functions in the light-front formalism for holographic models. We compute the light-front wave function (LFWF) considering different static dilaton fields and AdS-like geometric deformations. We also prove that this procedure holds for general AdS/QCD models in asymptotically AdS geometries.
We present a comparative study of nucleon structure such as electromagnetic form factors, transverse charge and magnetization densities in three different models within AdS/QCD framework.
We present a study of proton GPDs in both momentum and position spaces using proton wavefunction obtained from AdS/ QCD. Here we consider the soft wall model. The results are compared with a phenomenological model of proton GPDs.
We calculate the photon emission rate and the electrical conductivity of the QGP at finite temperature and finite chemical potential using AdS/QCD approximations in an AdS Reissner Nordstrom background. To do so, we supposed the medium properties to be encoded in a geometric background. The results obtained in the hard wall and soft wall model are consistent with the observed phenomenology and they also in agree with other holographic results, as the D3/D7 or the Sakai Sugimoto models, suggesting the universality of AdS/CFT conjecture as tool to explore QCD.
We propose a model for baryons at finite temperature using AdS/QCD correspondence. In this model, we modify the AdS spacetime into the AdS-Schwarzchild spacetime and consider a couple of bulk spinors in this background. Solving this model, we get an eigenvalue equation for the baryon masses. We then investigate the effects of temperature on the baryon masses numerically, and find an interesting temperature dependence. Our result is consistent with the results from lattice QCD and other phenomenological models.
We show that AdS/QCD generates predictions for the rate of diffractive rho meson electroproduction that are in agreement with data collected at the HERA electron-proton collider.
In this manuscript, a unified approach to hadron physics from holographic point of view is described. After introduction of a general setup for meson-nucleon system based on the bottom-up approach of QCD (AdS/QCD), as an illustration, we specifically examine meson-nucleon couplings. This is an example of the notion we call "holographic unification" in hadron physics.
This note focuses on the large-N behaviour of the Hard Wall model of QCD and clarifies the AdS/QCD dictionary formulated on the basis of the AdS/CFT correspondence. It is shown how short-distance studies performed in the framework of the AdS/QCD Soft Wall model allow one to determine unambiguously the chiral symmetry breaking function in the Hard Wall model. Especially, the different forms of the field/operator prescription are emphasized. The large-N behaviour of the Hard Wall model is then checked considering the vector and gravitational form factors of the pion in the chiral limit.
Using the light front wave functions for the nucleons in a quark model in AdS/QCD, we calculate the nucleon electromagnetic form factors. The flavor decompositions of the nucleon form factors are calculated from the GPDs in this model. We show that the nucleon form factors and their flavor decompositions calculated in AdS/QCD are in agreement with experimental data.
We use the functional form of the QCD running coupling to modify the conformal metric in AdS/CFT mapping the fifth-dimensional z-coordinate to the energy scale in the four-dimensional QCD. The resulting type-0 string theory in five dimensions is solved with the Nambu-Goto action giving good agreement with the Coulombic and confinement $Q \bar Q$ potential.
We use an AdS/QCD holographic wavefunction to generate predictions for the rate of diffractive ρ-meson electroproduction that are in reasonable agreement with data collected at the HERA electron-proton collider.
A fully back-reaction geometry model of AdS/QCD including the strange quark is described. We find that with the inclusion of the strange quark the impact on the metric is very small and the final predictions are changed only negligibly.
We present a study of the $N^*(1535)$ resonance electroexcitation in a soft-wall AdS/QCD model. Both the transverse $A_{1/2}^p$ and longitudinal $S_{1/2}^p$ helicity amplitudes are calculated resulting in good agreement with data and with the MAID parametrization.
We construct the dilaton potential in the gravity dual theory of AdS/QCD for the warp factor of Refs.{1,2}. Using this AdS_5-metric with properties similar to QCD, we find that the gravity dual leads to a meaningful gauge coupling in the region between the charmonium and bottonium mass, but differs slightly from QCD in the extreme UV. When we fix the ultraviolet behavior in accord with the beta-function, we can obtain good agreement with the overall heavy quark-antiquark potential. Although the leading order proportional to -α^{4/3}/r differs from perturbative QCD, the full potential agrees qu…
We study further the soft-wall AdS/QCD model with a cubic potential for the bulk scalar. We analyze the spectra of pseudoscalar, scalar, vector and axial-vector mesons. We also study the spin-1/2 nucleon spectrum and the pion-nucleon coupling. All of them have a good agreement with the experimental data.
We construct an improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model with a cubic coupling term of the dilaton and the bulk scalar field. The background fields in this model are solved from the Einstein-dilaton system with a nontrivial dilaton potential, which has been shown to be able to reproduce the equation of state from lattice QCD with two flavors. The chiral transition behaviors are investigated in the improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model with the solved gravitational background, and the crossover transition can be realized. Our study provides a possibility to address the deconfining and chiral phase transitio…
We incorporate chiral symmetry breaking in a soft-wall version of the AdS/QCD model by using a modified dilaton profile and a quartic term in the bulk scalar potential. This allows one to separate the dependence on spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking. The resulting mass spectra in the scalar, vector and axial-vector sectors compares favorably with the respective QCD resonances.
We show that the nucleon spectrum in a hard-wall AdS/QCD model can be improved by use of a relatively large IR cutoff. All of the spin-1/2 nucleon masses listed in PDG can be fit quite well within 11%. The average error is remarkably only 4.66%.
By using a new parametrization of the dilaton field and including a cubic term in the bulk scalar potential, we realize linear confinement in both meson and nucleon sectors within the framework of soft-wall AdS/QCD. At the same time this model also correctly incorporate chiral symmetry breaking. We compare our resulting mass spectra with experimental data and find good agreement between them.
The spectrum of doubly heavy baryons, hadrons made up of two heavy quarks and one light quark, is computed through a potential model with relativistic kinematics. The expression for the $Q\bar Q$ potential comes from the AdS/QCD correspondence.
