The mass spectrum of Delta resonances is compared to predictions based on three quark-model variants, to predictions assuming that chiral symmetry is restored in high-mass baryon resonances, and to predictions derived from AdS/QCD. The latter approach yields a nearly perfect agreement when the confinement property of QCD is modeled by a soft wall in AdS.
We study the Delta I =3/2 and Delta S =2 amplitudes for hyperon decays of the form (B to B(prime) pion) at lowest order in chiral perturbation theory. At this order, the Delta I=3/2 amplitudes depend on only one constant. We extract the value of this constant from experiment and find a reasonable description of these processes within experimental errors. The same constant determines the Delta S =2 transitions which, in the standard model, are too small to be observed. We find that new physics with parity odd Delta S=2 interactions can produce observable rates in hyperon decays while evading th…
We calculate magnetic moments of light baryons and N -> Delta gamma transition characteristics using a manifestly Lorentz covariant chiral quark approach for the study of baryons as bound states of constituent quarks dressed by a cloud of pseudoscalar mesons.
We examine the electromagnetic properties of the Delta(1232) resonance within the self-consistent chiral quark-soliton model. In particular we present the Delta form factors of the vector-current GE0, GE2 and GM1 for a momentum-transfer range of $Q^{2} \leq 1GeV^{2}$. We apply the symmetry-conserving quantization of the soliton and take 1/N_c rotational corrections into account. Values for the magnetic moments of all decuplet baryons as well as for the N-Delta transition are given. Special interest is also given to the electric quadrupole moment of the Delta.
We demonstrate how heavy mass methods, previously applied to chiral perturbation theory calculations involving the interactions of nucleons and pions, can be generalized to include interactions with the $Δ(1232)$ in a systematic formalism which we call the "small scale expansion."
We apply the perturbative chiral quark model to the gamma N -> Delta transition. The four momentum dependence of the respective transverse helicity amplitudes A(1/2) and A(3/2) is determined at one loop in the pseudoscalar Goldstone boson fluctuations. Inclusion of excited states in the quark propagator is shown to result in a reasonable description of the experimental values for the helicity amplitudes at the real photon point.
We study the 5D Rarita-Schwinger fields to describe spin 3/2 baryons in AdS/QCD. We calculate the spectrum of spin 3/2 baryons (Delta resonances) and their form factors, together with meson-baryon couplings from AdS/QCD. The transition form-factors between Delta and nucleon are evaluated. Both pion and rho meson couplings have the same origin in the bulk and hence unified. The numerical values for the meson-baryon transition couplings are consistent with the values obtained from other methods. We also predict the numerical values of some new couplings associated with Delta resonances.
We discuss electro-magnetic and weak axial N-Delta transition amplitudes in the linear sigma-model and the Cloudy-Bag Model as typical representatives of chiral quark models. We show that good qualitative understanding of the transition can be obtained in models which, in addition to the pion cloud, incorporate a fluctuating sigma-field inside the baryon.
I discuss the problem of constructing an effective low-energy theory in the vicinity of a resonance or a bound state. The focus is on the example of the $Δ(1232)$, the lightest resonance in the nucleon sector. Recent developments of the chiral effective-field theory in the $Δ$-resonance region are briefly reviewed. I conclude with a comment on the merits of the manifestly covariant formulation of chiral EFT in the baryon sector.
I discuss the role of the Delta I = 1/2 selection rule in K -> pi pi decays for the theoretical calculations of eps'/eps. Lacking reliable ``first principle'' calculations, phenomenological approaches may help in understanding correlations among different contributions and available experimental data. In particular, in the chiral quark model approach the same dynamics which underlies the Delta I = 1/2 selection rule in kaon decays appears to enhance the K -> pi pi matrix elements of the gluonic penguins, thus driving eps'/eps in the range of the recent experimental measurements.
In kaon decay, electromagnetic radiative corrections can generate shifts in the apparent Delta I = 3/2 amplitude of order alpha A_0/A_2 ~ 22 alpha. In order to know the true Delta I = 3/2 amplitude for comparison with lattice calculations and phenomenology, one needs to subtract off this electromagnetic effect. We provide a careful estimate of the electromagnetic shift in the amplitude, which shows that it is smaller than naive expectations, with a fractional shift of delta A_2/A_2 = -0.016 +- 0.01.
We report a theoretical study of the axial Nucleon to Delta(1232) ($N\toΔ$) transition form factors up to one-loop order in relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory. We adopt a formalism in which the $Δ$ couplings obey the spin-3/2 gauge symmetry and, therefore, decouple the unphysical spin-1/2 fields. We compare the results with phenomenological form factors obtained from neutrino bubble chamber data and in quark models.
We describe the pion electroproduction processes in the $Δ$(1232)-resonance region within the framework of chiral effective-field theory. By studying the observables of pion electroproduction in a next-to-leading order calculation we are able to make predictions and draw conclusions on the properties of the $N\to Δ$ electromagnetic form factors.
We calculate the width of the delta resonance at leading two-loop order in baryon chiral perturbation theory. This gives a correlation between the leading pion-nucleon-delta and pion-delta couplings, which is relevant for the analysis of pion-nucleon scattering and other processes.
Chiral symmetry is an essential concept in understanding QCD at low energy. We treat the chiral condensate, which measures the spontaneous breaking of chiral symmetry, as a free parameter to investigate the effect of partially restored chiral symmetry on the physical quantities in the frame work of an AdS/QCD model. We observe an interesting scaling behavior among the nucleon mass, pion decay constant and chiral condensate. We propose a phenomenological way to introduce the temperature dependence of a physical quantity in the AdS/QCD model with the thermal AdS metric.
Relations between nucleon, $Δ$ and nucleon-$Δ$ electromagnetic properties associated with chiral physics which have been derived in a pure large-$N_c$ limit are greatly modified in a combined large $N_c$ and chiral limits; the large $N_c$ relations are valid for $(M_Δ-M_N)/m_π<<1$. The E2/M1 ratio for the nucleon-$Δ$ transition is shown to scale as $ε^{-1}$ (with $ε\sim 1/N_c$, $ε\sim m_π/Λ$ with $Λ$ a typical hadronic scale) in the combined large $N_c$ and chiral expansions as opposed to $N_c^{-2}$ in the pure large $N_c$ expansion.
Hedgehog model predictions for the leading nonanalytic behavior (in $m^{2}_{π}$) of certain observables are shown to agree with the predictions of chiral perturbation theory up to an overall factor which depends on the operator. This factor can be understood in terms of contributions of the $Δ$ isobar in chiral loops. These physically motivated contributions are analyzed in an expansion in which both $m_π$ and $M_Δ-M_N$ are taken as small parameters, and are shown to yield large corrections to both hedgehog models and chiral perturbation theory.
We study the axial amplitudes for the N-Delta transition in models with quarks and chiral mesons. A set of constraints on the pion field is imposed which enforces PCAC and the off-diagonal Goldberger-Treiman relation. The quark contribution to the amplitudes in general strongly underestimates the C^A_5 amplitude as well as the piNDelta strong coupling constant. We show that the results are considerably improved in models that, in addition to the pion cloud, incorporate a fluctuating sigma field inside the baryon.
We use a configuration space chiral model in order to evaluate nucleon and delta sigma-terms. Analytic expressions are consistent with chiral counting rules and give rise to expected non-analytic terms in the chiral limit. We obtain the results $σ_N=46$ MeV and $σ_Δ=32$ MeV, which are very close to values extracted from experiment and produced by other groups.
The three complex form factors entering the $Δ\to Nγ^\ast$ vertex are calculated to ${\cal O}(ε^3)$ in the framework of a chiral effective theory with explicit Δ(1232) degrees of freedom included. It is shown that the low q^2 behavior of the form factors is governed by $πN$, $πΔ$ loop effects. Predictions are given for the q^2-dependence of the three transition-multipoles $M1(q^2), E2(q^2), C2(q^2)$. Furthermore, the role of presently unknown low energy constants that affect the values of the multipole ratios EMR(q^2) and CMR(q^2) is elucidated.
We study the momentum and the quark mass dependence of the axial nucleon to Delta(1232) transition form factors in the framework of non-relativistic chiral effective field theory to leading-one-loop order. The outcome of our analysis provides a theoretical guidance for chiral extrapolations of lattice QCD results with dynamical fermions.
We study the |Delta I|=3/2 amplitudes of the octet-hyperon decays B -> B' + pion and of the decays Omega^- -> Cascade + pion in the context of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory. For the octet-hyperon decays, we investigate the theoretical uncertainty of the lowest-order predictions by calculating the leading non-analytic corrections. We find that these corrections are within the expectations of naive power counting and, therefore, that this picture can be tested more accurately with improved measurements. For the Omega- decays, we obtain at leading order two operators responsible for the…
We incorporate chiral symmetry breaking in a soft-wall version of the AdS/QCD model by using a modified dilaton profile and a quartic term in the bulk scalar potential. This allows one to separate the dependence on spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking. The resulting mass spectra in the scalar, vector and axial-vector sectors compares favorably with the respective QCD resonances.
Chiral corrections to the delta axial charge are determined using heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. Knowledge of this axial coupling is necessary to assess virtual-delta contributions to nucleon and delta observables. We give isospin relations useful for a lattice determination of the axial coupling. Furthermore we detail partially quenched chiral corrections, which are relevant to address partial quenching and/or mixed action errors in lattice calculations of the delta axial charge.
We construct an improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model with a cubic coupling term of the dilaton and the bulk scalar field. The background fields in this model are solved from the Einstein-dilaton system with a nontrivial dilaton potential, which has been shown to be able to reproduce the equation of state from lattice QCD with two flavors. The chiral transition behaviors are investigated in the improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model with the solved gravitational background, and the crossover transition can be realized. Our study provides a possibility to address the deconfining and chiral phase transitio…
Heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is briefly reviewed, paying particular attention to the role of the spin 3/2 delta resonances. The concept of resonance saturation for the baryonic sector is critically discussed. Starting from a relativistic formulation of the pion-nucleon-delta system, the heavy baryon chiral lagrangian including spin 3/2 resonances is constructed by means of a 1/m-expansion. The effective theory obtained admits a systematic expansion in terms of soft momenta, the pion mass $M_π$ and the delta-nucleon mass difference $Δ$.
We give a further study on the improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model with two flavors. The chiral transition behaviors are studied in the case of finite chemical potential, with the chiral phase diagram obtained at zero quark mass. The thermal spectral functions of the vector and axial-vector mesons are calculated, and the in-medium melting properties of the mesons are investigated. We find that the chiral transition behaviors and the meson melting properties at finite chemical potential can be qualitatively described by the improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model, except in the region of large chemical p…
We classify compactifications of the type IIB superstring on AdS_{5} x S^{5}/Γ, where Γis an abelian group of order n<= 12. Appropriate embedding of Γin the isometry of S^5 yields both SUSY and non-SUSY chiral models that can contain the minimal SUSY standard model or the standard model. New non-SUSY three family models with Γ=Z_8 are introduced, which lead to the right Weinberg angle for TeV trinification.
Suppose that the weak interaction Hamiltonian of four-flavour SU(4) chiral effective theory is known, for a small charm quark mass m_c. We study how the weak Hamiltonian changes as the charm quark mass increases, by integrating it out within chiral perturbation theory to obtain a three-flavour SU(3) chiral theory. We find that the ratio of the SU(3) low-energy constants which mediate Delta I=1/2 and Delta I=3/2 transitions, increases rather rapidly with m_c, as \sim m_c ln (1/m_c). The logarithmic effect originates from "penguin-type" charm loops, and could represent one of the reasons for the…
We investigate in detail the chiral thermal transition of QCD in an improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model with a simply modified 5D conformal mass of the bulk scalar field. We also present a calculation in this model for the light meson spectra and other low-energy characteristic quantities including the pion form factor, the pi-rho coupling constant and the decay constants of pi, rho, a_1, which are shown to result in a good agreement with experimental data except for the pion decay constant. The thermal behavior of chiral condensate is studied. It is found that such a simply improved soft-wall mo…
We study the decays Omega^- -> Cascade+pion using heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory to quantify the |Delta I|=1/2 rule in these decay modes. The ratio of |Delta I|=3/2 to |Delta I|=1/2 amplitudes is somewhat larger in these decays than it is in other hyperon decays. At leading order there are two operators responsible for the |Delta I|=3/2 parts of the Omega^- decays which also contribute at one loop to other hyperon decays. These one-loop contributions are sufficiently large to indicate (albeit not definitely) that the measured width ratio of Omega^-->Cascade^0+pion^- to Omega^-->Cascad…
We study the chemical potential effects on the chiral phase transition in a simply improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model, which can realize consistently the properties of linear confinement and spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking. The $μ-T$ phase diagrams with both zero and physical quark masses have been obtained from this model. For the case of physical quark mass, the chiral transition has a crossover behavior at low chemical potential. With the increase of the chemical potential $μ$, the critical temperature $T_c$ descends towards zero, and the crossover transition turns into a first-order one…
We investigate the role of the delta isobar in the reaction $πd\to πd$ at threshold in chiral effective field theory. We discuss the corresponding power counting and argue that this calculation completes the evaluation of diagrams up to the order (m_pi/M_N)^(3/2), with m_pi (M_N) for the pion (nucleon) mass. The net effect of all delta contributions at this order to the pion-deuteron scattering length is (2.4 +/- 0.4)x 10^(-3) m_pi^{-1}.
We give a further study on chiral phase diagram in the improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model with $2+1$ flavors. The equations of motion for the octet pseudoscalar, vector and axial-vector mesons are derived to compute the octet meson spectra and relevant decay constants, by which the model parameters are determined. The chemical potential effects on thermal transition of chiral condensate are investigated, which enables us to obtain the chiral phase diagram in the $μ-T$ plane. We find that the critical end point linking the crossover transition with the first-order phase transition still exists an…
We study the chiral phase transition with 2 + 1 quark flavors in an improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model, which can produce the light meson spectrum and many other low-energy quantities consistent with experiments in the two-flavor case. The chiral transition behaviors of the quark condensates at different quark masses are analysed in detail, and the (m_{u,d}, m_s) phase diagram for the quark sector has been obtained from the improved soft-wall model. We find that the features of the calculated phase diagram are completely consistent with the standard scenario, which is supported by lattice simula…
We perform a relativistic chiral effective field theory calculation of the radiative pion photoproduction ($γp \to π^0 p γ'$) in the $Δ$-resonance region, to next-to-leading order in the ``delta-expansion''. This work is aimed at a model-independent extraction of the $Δ^+$ magnetic moment from new precise measurements of this reaction. It also predicts the chiral behavior of $Δ$'s magnetic moment, which can be used to extrapolate the recent lattice QCD results to the physical point.
We present a new analysis of the Delta I = 1/2 rule in K --> pi pi decays and the B_K parameter. We use the 1/N_c expansion within the effective chiral lagrangian for pseudoscalar mesons and compute the hadronic matrix elements at leading and next-to-leading order in the chiral and the 1/N_c expansions. Numerically, our calculation reproduces the dominant Delta I = 1/2 K --> pi pi amplitude. Our result depends only moderately on the choice of the cutoff scale in the chiral loops. The Delta I = 3/2 amplitude emerges sufficiently suppressed but shows a significant dependence on the cutoff. The B…
We report on a simulation in progress of an SU(2) X U(1) fermion-Higgs model with two *non-degenerate* fermion doublets. The Zaragoza proposal for chiral lattice fermions is used; naive fermions are studied for comparison. The aims of this simulation are a non-perturbative study of the decoupling of species doublers, of triviality bounds on the Higgs and fermion masses and of the phenomenological quantity Delta-rho.
We analytically prove that the existence of the delta-function singularity in the chirally-odd twist-3 distribution $e(x)$ of the nucleon is inseparably connected with the nonvanishing quark condensate as a signal of the spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking of the QCD vacuum. This singularity in $e(x)$, which would be observed as a sizable violation of the 1st moment sum rule, is then interpreted as giving a very rare case that the nontrivial vacuum structure of QCD manifests in an observable of a localized QCD excitation, i.e. the nucleon.
It has been argued recently that the inclusion of the chiral logarithms in extrapolation of the lattice data can shift the value of the hadronic parameter xi = (fBs sqrt(B_{Bs}))/(fBd sqrt(B_{Bd})), from 1.16(6) to 1.32(10) and even higher. If true, that would considerably change the theoretical estimate for the ratio of oscillation frequencies in the neutral Bs- and Bd-systems, and would affect the standard CKM unitarity triangle analysis. In this letter we show that (fBs/fBd) \approx (fK/fpi), and thus the uncertainty due to the missing chiral logs is smaller than previously thought. By comb…
We investigate the in-medium behavior of mesons at finite temperature and baryon chemical potential within a soft-wall model of AdS/QCD. We use a quartic scalar potential to obtain the correct form of chiral symmetry breaking. At zero quark mass the chiral phase transition is second-order, becoming a crossover at physical quark mass. At zero baryon chemical potential, we find a chiral transition temperature of 155 MeV in the chiral limit and a pseudo-transition temperature of 151 MeV at physical quark mass, consistent with lattice results. In the low-temperature limit, the second-order transit…
We calculate the masses of the nucleons and deltas in twisted mass heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We work to quadratic order in a power counting scheme in which we treat the lattice spacing and the quark masses to be of the same order. We give expressions for the mass and the mass splitting of the nucleons and deltas both in and away from the isospin limit. We give an argument using the chiral Lagrangian treatment that, in the strong isospin limit, the nucleons remain degenerate and the delta multiplet breaks into two degenerate pairs to all orders in chiral perturbation theory. We s…
We study the $ΔI = 1/2$ rule for kaon decays and the $B_K$ parameter for $K^0 - {\bar K}^0$ mixing in a dual 5-dimensional holographic QCD model. We perform, in the chiral limit, computations of the relevant four-point current-current correlators, which depend upon self-interactions among the 5D bulk fields. Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking ($χ$SB) is realized through boundary conditions on the bulk fields. Numerical results are analyzed in comparison with QCD, chiral perturbation theory ($χ$PT) and data, finding reasonable agreement with the experimental values of the $g_8$ and $g_{27}$ p…
We calculate the hadronic matrix elements to $O(p^4)$ in the chiral expansion for the ($ΔS =1$) $K^0 \to 2 π$ decays and the ($ΔS=2$) $\bar K^0$-$K^0$ oscillation. This is done within the framework of the chiral quark model. The chiral coefficients thus determined depend on the values of the quark and gluon condensates and the constituent quark mass. We show that it is possible to fit the $ΔI =1/2$ rule of kaon decays with values of the condensates close to those obtained by QCD sum rules. The renormalization invariant amplitudes are obtained by matching the hadronic matrix elements and their …
The leading one-loop corrections to the gravitational form factors of the delta resonance are calculated in the framework of chiral effective field theory. Various contributions to the energy-momentum tensor and the renormalization of the low-energy constants are worked out. Using the small scale expansion, expressions for static quantities are obtained and the real and imaginary parts of the gravitational form factors are calculated numerically.
We calculate the form factors of the electromagnetic nucleon-to-$Δ$-resonance transition to third chiral order in manifestly Lorentz-invariant chiral effective field theory. For the purpose of generating a systematic power counting, the complex-mass scheme is applied in combination with the small-scale expansion. We fit the results to available empirical data.
We develop a formalism to calculate form factor and charge density distribution of pion in the chiral limit using the holographic dual model of QCD with hard-wall cutoff. We introduce two conjugate pion wave functions and present analytic expressions for these functions and for the pion form factor. They allow to relate such observables as the pion decay constant and the pion charge electric radius to the values of chiral condensate and hard-wall cutoff scale. The evolution of the pion form factor to large values of the momentum transfer is discussed, and results are compared to existing exper…
Transverse densities describe the spatial distribution of electromagnetic current in the nucleon at fixed light-front time. At peripheral distances b = O(M_pi^{-1}) the densities are governed by chiral dynamics and can be calculated model-independently using chiral effective field theory (EFT). Recent work has shown that the EFT results can be represented in first-quantized form, as overlap integrals of chiral light-front wave functions describing the transition of the nucleon to soft-pion-nucleon intermediate states, resulting in a quantum-mechanical picture of the peripheral transverse densi…
We consider chiral symmetry breaking AdS / QCD models with cubic and quartic potentials in the scalar sector and a z dependent mass for scalars in the bulk. In these models it is possible to get good mesonic spectra using current quark masses.
We present the results of a third order calculation of the pion-nucleon scattering amplitude in a chiral effective field theory with pions, nucleons and delta resonances as explicit degrees of freedom. We work in a manifestly Lorentz invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory using dimensional regularization and the extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. In the delta resonance sector, the on mass-shell renormalization is realized as a complex-mass scheme. By fitting the low-energy constants of the effective Lagrangian to the $S$- and $P$-partial waves a satisfactory des…
We develop a generalized version of heavy-baryon chiral perturbation theory to describe pion-nucleon scattering in a kinematic domain that extends continuously from threshold to the delta-isobar peak. The $P$-wave phase shifts are used to illustrate this framework.
We consider mesons composed of light and heavy quarks and discuss the construction of the corresponding meson wave functions in soft-wall AdS/QCD. We specifically take care that constraints imposed by chiral symmetry breaking and by the heavy quark limit are fulfilled. The main results are: i) the wave functions of light mesons have a nontrivial dependence on the current quark mass, which gives rise to a mass spectrum consistent with the one including explicit breaking of chiral symmetry; ii) the wave functions of heavy-light mesons generate their correct mass spectrum, the mass splittings of …
We study the |Delta I|=3/2 amplitudes of hyperon non-leptonic decays of the form B->B'+pi in the context of chiral perturbation theory. The lowest-order predictions are determined in terms of only one unknown parameter and are consistent within errors with current data. We investigate the theoretical uncertainty of these predictions by calculating the leading non-analytic corrections. We also present an estimate for the size of the S-wave Lambda and Cascade decays which vanish at leading order. We find that the corrections to the lowest-order predictions are within the expectations of naive po…
The chirally-odd twist-3 parton distribution function e(x) of the nucleon is studied in the large-Nc limit in the framework of the chiral quark-soliton model. It is demonstrated that in spite of properties not shared by other distribution functions, namely the appearance of a delta(x)-singularity and quadratic divergences in e(x), an equally reliable calculation is possible. Among the most remarkable results obtained in this work is the fact that the coefficient of the delta(x)-singularity can be computed exactly in this model, avoiding involved numerics. Our results complete existing studies …
There is an important connection between the low energy theorems of QCD and the energy dependence of the Delta resonance in pi-N scattering, as well as the closely related gamma^{*} N -> pi N reaction. The resonance shape is due not only to the strong pi-N interaction in the p wave but the small interaction in the s wave; the latter is due to spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD (i.e. the Nambu-Goldstone nature of the pion). A brief overview of experimental tests of chiral perturbation theory and chiral based models is presented
We present a new calculation of long-distance contributions to the K --> pi pi amplitudes using the 1/N_c expansion within the framework of chiral perturbation theory. Along these lines we compute the chiral loop corrections to the operators Q_1, Q_2, Q_6, and Q_8. In the numerical analysis we present values for B_6^(1/2) and B_8^(3/2). We discuss also the implications for a theoretical understanding of the Delta I=1/2 selection rule.
In this paper a model incorporating chiral symmetry breaking and dynamical soft-wall AdS/QCD is established. The AdS/QCD background is introduced dynamically as suggested by Wayne de Paula etc al and chiral symmetry breaking is discussed by using a bulk scalar field including a cubic term. The mass spectrum of scalar, vector and axial vector mesons are obtained and a comparison with experimental data is presented.
We investigate the dependence of the chiral condensate $<\bar qq>$ on the temperature and quark density using the soft-wall holographic model of QCD, adopting geometries with black holes at finite temperature and quark chemical potential $μ$. We find that, for $μ$ below a critical value, increasing the temperature the condensate decreases and vanishes at a temperature $\tilde T\simeq 210$ MeV (at $μ=0$). An analogous behaviour is observed increasing the chemical potential at fixed temperature. These results agree with the findings obtained by other methods. We also comment on the robustness of…
