Advanced neutral particles analyzer for plasma diagnostic with possibility of simultaneous measurements of energy distributions of D and H ions has developed in the Budker Institute of Nuclear Physics. The analyzer was used in two plasma facilities with injection of fast neutrals - on the MST reversed field pinch (University of Wisconsin) and the field reversed configuration C-2 (Tri Alpha Energy). In this paper, the design of the analyzer, calculation of efficiency of registration, results of analyzer calibration and experimental results from MST and C-2 experiments are presented
An Imaging Neutral Particle Analyser (INPA) diagnostic has been designed for the ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) tokamak. The AUG INPA diagnostic will measure fast neutrals escaping the plasma after CX reactions. The neutrals will be ionised by a 20 nm carbon foil and deflected towards a scintillator by the local magnetic field. The use of a neutral beam injector (NBI) as active source of neutrals will provide radially resolved measurements while the use of a scintillator as active component will allow us to cover the whole plasma along the NBI line with unprecedented phase-space resolution ($ < $ 12 keV …
Energy analyzers are important plasma diagnostic tools with applications in a broad range of disciplines including molecular spectroscopy, electron microscopy, basic plasma physics, plasma etching, plasma processing, and ion sputtering technology. The Hyperbolic Field Energy Analyzer (HFEA) is a novel device able to determine ion and electron energy spectra and temperatures. The HFEA is well suited for ion temperature and density diagnostics at those situations where ions are scarce. A simulation of the capacities of the HFEA to discriminate particles of a particular energy level, as well as t…
Measurements of Ion velocity distributions are one of basic goals of space plasma studies. There is variety of ion and electron spectrometers (e.g. Wuest et al, 2007, Young et al., 2007, Zurbuchen and Gershman, 2016, Vaisberg et al, 2016). The most frequently used ion spectrometer is top-hat analyzer (Carlson et al., 1983) consisting of toroidal electrostatic analyzer, electrostatic scanner and time-of-flight section with thin foil as start element and ion pre-acceleration. We describe new energy-mass analyzer with electrostatic scanner providing hemispheric field-of view with small aberration…
Producing a dense background plasma for neutralization purposes is experimentally difficult and requires a large amount of energy. We show that even an underdense background plasma with a small relative density can achieve high neutralization of intense ion beam pulses. Using particle-in-cell simulations, we show that if the total plasma electron charge is not comparable to the beam charge, electron emitters are necessary for effective neutralization, but are not needed if the plasma volume is large. Several plasma densities are investigated, including the case of electron emitters without pla…
An impact of neutrals on anomalous edge plasma transport and zonal flow (ZF) is considered. As an example, it is assumed that edge plasma turbulence is driven by the resistive drift wave (RDW) instability. It is found that the actual effect of neutrals is not related to a suppression of the instability \textit{per se}, but due to an impact on the ZF. Particularly, it is shown that, whereas the neutrals make very little impact on the linear growth rate of the RDW instability, they can largely reduce the zonal flow generation in the nonlinear stage, which results in an enhancement of the overall…
The low-frequency limit of Maxwell equations is considered in the Maxwell-Vlasov system. This limit produces a neutral Vlasov system that captures essential features of plasma dynamics, while neglecting radiation effects. Euler-Poincaré reduction theory is used to show that the neutral Vlasov kinetic theory possesses a variational formulation in both Lagrangian and Eulerian coordinates. By construction, the model recovers all collisionless neutral models employed in plasma simulations. Then, comparisons between the neutral Vlasov system and hybrid kinetic-fluid models are presented in the line…
An experimental study of Ion Acoustic (IA) wave propagation is performed to investigate the effect of neutral density for argon plasma in an unmagnetized linear plasma device. The neutral density is varied by changing the neutral pressure, which in turn allows the change in ion-neutral, and electron-neutral collision mean free path. The collisions of plasma species with neutrals are found to modify the IA wave characteristics such as the wave amplitude, velocity, and propagation length. Unlike the earlier reported work where neutrals tend to heavily damp IA wave in the frequency regime ω<ν_in …
A relation between physical consequences of the so-called Ehrenfest's Paradox and the radial electric field in the classical quasi-neutral tokamak plasma is shown. Basic author's approach to the relativistic nature of the tokamak has been described in [1]. The experiment which can resolve the Ehrenfest's Paradox is presented.
We present a study of the expansion of an ultracold neutral plasma (UCNP) with an initial density distribution that decays exponentially in space, created by photoionizing atoms shortly after their release from a quadrupole (or biconic cusp) magnetic trap. A characteristic ion acoustic timescale is evident in the evolution of the plasma size and velocity, indicating the dynamics are reasonably well described by a model of hydrodynamic expansion of a quasi-neutral plasma. However, for low plasma density and high initial electron temperature, excess ion kinetic energy in the vicinity of the cent…
Neutral atoms can strongly influence the intrinsic rotation and radial electric field at the tokamak edge. Here, we present a framework to investigate these effects when the neutrals dominate the momentum transport. We explore the parameter space numerically, using highly flexible model geometries and a state of the art kinetic solver. We find that the most important parameters controlling the toroidal rotation and electric field are the major radius where the neutrals are localized and the plasma collisionality. This offers a means to influence the rotation and electric field by, for example,…
Molecular dynamics simulations are used to model ion and neutral temperature evolution in partially-ionized atmospheric pressure plasma at different ionization fractions. Results show that ion-ion interactions are strongly coupled at ionization fractions as low as 10^-5 and that the temperature evolution is influenced by effects associated with the strong coupling. Specifically, disorder-induced heating is found to rapidly heat ions on a timescale of the ion plasma period (~10s ps) after an ionization pulse. This is followed by the collisional relaxation of ions and neutrals, which cools ions …
We study the long-time evolution of the ion temperature in an expanding ultracold neutral plasma using spatially resolved, laser-induced-fluorescence spectroscopy. Adiabatic cooling reduces the ion temperature by an order of magnitude during the plasma expansion, to temperatures as low as 0.2 K. Cooling is limited by heat exchange between ions and the much hotter electrons. We also present evidence for an additional heating mechanism and discuss possible sources. Data are described by a model of the plasma evolution, including the effects of ion-electron heat exchange. We show that for appropr…
The accurate measurement of plasma potentials at high pressure is investigated with the emissive probe. The emissive probe I-V characteristic of argon plasma obtained at 100 Pa is interpreted in detail, showing two inflection points in the I-V trace. The accurate plasma potentials at high pressure can be determined from the first inflection point potentials (the higher potential) by the improved inflection point method of the emissive probe, while the second inflection point is a result of the additional ionizing phenomenon caused by the collision between the emitted electrons and the neutral …
We create streaming ultracold neutral plasmas by tailoring the photoionizing laser beam that creates the plasma. By varying the electron temperature, we control the relative velocity of the streaming populations, and, in conjunction with variation of the plasma density, this controls the ion collisionality of the colliding streams. Laser-induced fluorescence is used to map the spatially resolved density and velocity distribution function for the ions. We identify the lack of local thermal equilibrium and distinct populations of interpenetrating, counter-streaming ions as signatures of kinetic …
We report on the laser-driven generation of purely neutral, relativistic electron-positron pair plasmas. The overall charge neutrality, high average Lorentz factor ($γ_{e/p} \approx 15$), small divergence ($θ_{e/p} \approx 10 - 20$ mrad), and high density ($n_{e/p}\simeq 10^{15}$cm$^{-3}$) of these plasmas open the pathway for the experimental study of the dynamics of this exotic state of matter, in regimes that are of relevance to electron-positron astrophysical plasmas.
Nonlinear dynamics of collisionless non-neutral plasma in an external electrical trapping field is considered. Time-dependent solution of the nonlinear Vlasov-Poisson equations are obtained. The influence of initial conditions on the dynamics of charged layer is discussed.
A tutorial overview on the angular scattering models of Electron-Neutral, Ion-Neutral, Neutral-Neutral, and Coulomb Collisions in Monte Carlo collision modeling on low temperature plasma
We report on the self-induced electron trapping occurring in a ultracold neutral plasma that is set to expand freely. At the early stages of the plasma, the ions are not thermalized follow a Gaussian spatial profile, providing the trapping to the coldest electrons. In the present work, we provide a theoretical model describing the electrostatic potential and perform molecular dynamics simulations to validate our findings. We show that in the strong confinement regime, the plasma potential is of a Thomas-Fermi type, similar to the case of heavy atomic species. The numerically simulated spatial …
This work addresses linear transport in turbulent media, with emphasis on neutral particle (atoms, molecules) transport in magnetized fusion plasmas. A stochastic model for turbulent plasmas, based upon a multivariate Gamma distribution, is presented. The geometry is a 2D slab and turbulence is assumed to be statistically homogeneous. The average neutral density and ionization source, which are the quantities relevant for integrated simulations and diagnostic applications, are calculated analytically in the scattering free case. The boundary conditions and the ratio of the turbulence correlati…
The 3-D exact analytical solutions of ideal two fluid plasma, single fluid plasma (MHD) and neutral fluid equations have been found using physically justifiable assumptions. Surprisingly these solutions satisfy all non-linearities in the systems. It is pointed out that these solutions explain the fundamental mechanism behind the creation of vast variety of ordered structures in plasmas and fluids. In the limiting case of two dimensional (2-D) dependence of fields, the theoretical model for plasma is applied to explain the formation of spicules in solar chromosphere. It is pointed out that the …
Electron heating in an ultracold neutral plasma is modeled using classical molecular dynamics simulations in the presence of an externally applied magnetic field. A sufficiently strong magnetic field is found to reduce disorder induced heating and three body recombination heating of electrons by constraining electron motion, and therefore heating, to the single dimension aligned with the magnetic field. A strong and long-lasting temperature anisotropy develops, and the overall kinetic electron temperature is effectively reduced by a factor of three. These results suggest that experiments may i…
Self-organization of a long-lived structure is one of the remarkable characteristics of macroscopic systems governed by long-range interactions. In a homogeneous magnetic field, a non-neutral plasma creates a "thermal equilibrium" which is a Boltzmann distribution on a rigidly rotating frame. Here, we study how a non-neutral plasma self-organizes in inhomogeneous magnetic field; as a typical system we consider a dipole magnetic field. In this generalized setting, the plasma exhibits its fundamental mechanism that determines the relaxed state. The scale hierarchy of adiabatic invariants is the …
The role of turbulence in setting boundary plasma conditions is presently a key uncertainty in projecting to fusion energy reactors. To robustly diagnose edge turbulence, we develop and demonstrate a technique to translate brightness measurements of HeI line radiation into local plasma fluctuations via a novel integrated deep learning framework that combines neutral transport physics and collisional radiative theory for the $3^3 D - 2^3 P$ transition in atomic helium. The tenets for experimental validity are reviewed, illustrating that this turbulence analysis for ionized gases is transferable…
Low-temperature plasma (LTP) processing is a green and flexible food processing technology with only known limitation of low energy efficiency. Three established fundamental mechanisms of plasma food processing includes: i) physical damage to membranes and internal cellular components due to bombardment of energetic ions: ii) radicals and charged species led chemical reactions: iii) and radiation-induced modifications. In this investigation, we present a new mechanism of generation and extraction of energetic $N_2$ neutrals from glow discharge plasmas for efficient food processing. For nitroge…
A theoretical model is developed and evaluated using a Vlasov-Poisson treatment to calculate radiofrequency (RF) electric field heating rates for magnetized electrons in neutral plasma when the magnetic and electric field directions are colinear and when the RF is of sufficiently high frequency. This calculation reduces to the theory for magnetized longitudinal AC conductivity introduced by Oberman and Shure [C. Oberman and F. Shure, Phys. Fluids 6, 834-838 (1963)] in the low-amplitude limit when the electron oscillation velocity is much less than the thermal velocity. For electron coupling st…
We calculate exact one-dimensional collisionless plasma equilibria for a continuum of flux tube models, for which the total magnetic field is made up of the `force-free' Gold-Hoyle magnetic flux tube embedded in a uniform and anti-parallel background magnetic field. For a sufficiently weak background magnetic field, the axial component of the total magnetic field reverses at some finite radius. The presence of the background magnetic field means that the total system is not exactly force-free, but by reducing its magnitude the departure from force-free can be made as small as desired. The dist…
The optical diagnostic observing D-alpha line emission along multiple chords in the boundary region close to the plasma absorber, is recently installed at the gas dynamic trap. The implemented pattern of viewing lines is suitable for a tomographic reconstruction of local emissivity profiles, although steps towards increasing the channel count and extending of angular plasma coverage must be taken. The optical registration system of a modular design uses avalanche photodiodes with wideband amplifiers for a large signal dynamic range and the effective time resolution of 1 mks. The iterative back…
We present a general expression for the probability distribution function of electric field in a plasma cloud formed by the impact of a laser pulse on a gas or a solid body. We also present the results of numerical calculation of this function for the case of non-interacting particles depending on the plasma cloud size. It takes into account the ionic microfield and the macrofield arising from the charge imbalance. As the charge imbalance increases, the effect of a sharp increase in the distribution function for large field values is observed. Good agreement between the calculation of the shif…
We present a detailed experimental study of gas flow induced motion of dust particles in a DC glow discharge plasma. The characteristics of the dust dynamics are investigated as a function of the differential gas flow rate, the background neutral pressure, the dust particle size as well as the neutral species of the gas. The experiments have been carried out in the table top Dusty Plasma Experimental (DPEx) device in which a plasma is created between a disk shaped anode and a grounded cathode in a $Π$-shaped pyrex glass tube. The asymptotic steady state flow velocity of the injected micron siz…
We numerically investigate the dust charging in the sheath, by using the usual fluid approximation, it is extended to include self consistently the dust charge variation. The grain charge becomes a new self consistent dynamic variable, it is found that dust grains are first charged negatively at the sheath edge and then begin to be charged positively in the sheath. The numerical results show that the initial velocity of dust charged grains, sized grains and the density ratio of ion to electron at the sheath edge have affected the neutral point of dust charge. Moreover, the neutral point of dus…
The electron component of an ultracold neutral plasma (UCP) is modeled based on a scalable method using a self-consistently determined mean-field approximation. Representative sampling of discrete electrons within the UCP are used to project the electron spatial distribution onto an expansion of orthogonal basis functions. A collision operator acting on the sample electrons is employed in order to drive the distribution toward thermal equilibrium. These equilibrium distributions can be determined for non-zero electron temperatures even in the presence of spherical symmetry-breaking applied ele…
A new version of GBS (Ricci et al. Plasma Phys. Control. Fusion 54, 124047, 2012; Halpern et al. J. Comput. Phys. 315, 388-408, 2016; Paruta et al. Phys. Plasmas 25, 112301, 2018) is described. GBS is a three-dimensional, flux-driven, global, two-fluid turbulence code developed for the self-consistent simulation of plasma turbulence and kinetic neutral dynamics in the tokamak boundary. In the new version presented here, the simulation domain is extended to encompass the whole plasma volume, avoiding an artificial boundary with the core, hence retaining the core-edge-SOL interplay. A new toroid…
It is economical to devise ways and means to simplify a multi-species particle system. The single fluid MHD description of a plasma is sufficiently adequate to study plasma phenomena . A plasma containing multi-species of particles can also be described by representing each particle species by the corresponding fluid. A partially ionized plasma consisting of electrons, ions and the neutral particles can be described as a single fluid by appropriately combining the dynamics of each of the species. The three component plasma can also be reduced to a two-fluid system. The most obvious way is to c…
The effects of friction on the ion acoustic (IA) wave in fully and partially ionized plasmas are studied. In a quasi-neutral electron-ion plasma the friction between the two species cancels out exactly and the wave propagates without any damping. If the Poisson equation is used instead of the quasi-neutrality, however, the IA wave is damped and the damping is dispersive. In a partially ionized plasma, the collisions with the neutrals modify the IA wave beyond recognition. For a low density of neutrals the mode is damped. Upon increasing the neutral density, the mode becomes first evanescent an…
We suggest an approach for using microwave radiation in diagnostics of ultracold neutral plasma. Microwave scattering from ultracold neutral plasma is calculated . Simple formulations are get and indicate that the dipole radiation power of ultracold neutral plasma does not depend on density profile $n_e(r)$ and $ω$ when $ω\ggω_{pe0}$, but on the total electron number $N_e$. This method provides the information of $N_e$ and from which we can get the three body recombination rate of the plasma, which is extremely important in the researches of ultracold neutral plasma.
Radio-frequency-driven atmospheric pressure plasma jets (RF APPJs) play an essential role in many technological applications. This work studies the characteristics of these discharges in the so-called non-neutral regime where the conventional structure of a quasi-neutral bulk and an electron depleted sheath does not develop, and the electrons are instead organized in a drift-soliton-like structure that never reaches quasi-neutrality. A hybrid particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collisions (PIC/MCC) simulation is set up, which combines a fully kinetic electron model via the PIC/MCC algorithm with a dr…
Radio Frequency (RF) driven helicon plasma sources are commonly used for their ability to produce high-density argon plasmas (n > 10^19/m^3) at relatively moderate powers (typical RF power < 2 kW). Typical electron temperatures are < 10 eV and typical ion temperatures are < 0.6 eV. A newly designed helicon antenna assembly (with concentric, double-layered, fully liquid-cooled RF-transparent windows) operates in steady-state at RF powers up to 10 kW. We report on the dependence of argon plasma density, electron temperature and ion temperature on RF power. At 10 kW, ion temperatures > 2 eV in ar…
The pressure and internal energy of an ultracold plasma in a state of quasi-equilibrium are evaluated using classical molecular dynamics simulations. Coulomb collapse is avoided by modeling electron-ion interactions using an attractive Coulomb potential with a repulsive core. We present a method to separate the contribution of classical bound states, which form due to recombination, from the contribution of free charges when evaluating these thermodynamic state variables. It is found that the contribution from free charges is independent of the choice of repulsive core length-scale when it is …
In most PIC/MCC simulations of radio frequency capacitively coupled plasmas (CCPs) several simplifications are made: (i) fast neutrals are not traced, (ii) heavy particle induced excitation and ionization are neglected, (iii) secondary electron emission from boundary surfaces due to neutral particle impact is not taken into account, and (iv) the secondary electron emission coefficient is assumed to be constant, i.e. independent of the incident particle energy and the surface conditions. Here we question the validity of these simplifications under conditions typical for plasma processing applic…
Conventional snowplow/1-D models assume the existence of single completely ionized plasma sheet in the discharge chamber of pulsed plasma thrusters (PPTs). However, extensive experimental analysis and observations suggest the presence of multiple plasma streams and partial ionization of the propellant gas. A multi-layered plasma-neutral mass sheet one-dimensional numerical model is developed for PPTs in the present paper. The model accounts for the secondary plasma sheets generated due to the crowbar breakdowns as well as the neutral gas generated after the main discharge. The model accurately…
