Higher moments of net-proton multiplicity distributions are applied to search for the QCD critical point. In this paper, we will present measurements for kurtosis ($κ$), skewness ($S$) and variance $σ^2$) of net-proton multiplicity distributions at the mid-rapidity ($|y|<0.5$) and transverse momentum range $0.4<p_{T}<0.8$ {\gevc} for Au+Au collisions at {\sNN} = 7.7, 11.5, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV, Cu+Cu collisions at {\sNN} = 22.4, 62.4 and 200 GeV, $d$+Au collisions at {\sNN} = 200 GeV and p+p collisions at {\sNN} = 62.4 and 200 GeV. The moment products $κσ^2$ and $S σ$ of net-proton distributions, which are related to volume independent baryon number susceptibility ratios, are consistent with Lattice QCD and Hadron Resonance Gas (HRG) model calculations at high energies ({\sNN} = 62.4 and 200 GeV). Deviations of $κσ^2$ and $Sσ$ for the Au+Au collisions at low energies ({\sNN} = 7.7, 11.5 and 39 GeV) from HRG model calculations are also observed.
In this paper, STAR's measurement of clan multiplicity is presented for AuAu collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV, for a variety of centrality classes. The mean number of particles per clan is found to decrease with decreasing centrality. Within the same centrality class, the mean number of particles per clan exhibits a reduction between 19.6 GeV and 62 GeV, with the minimum around 27 GeV. The structure is visible for most centralities, and most prominent for central collisions.
We present various order moments (Variance ($σ^2$), Skewness($S$), Kurtosis($κ$)) of net-proton multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions from the first phase of RHIC beam energy scan ({\sNN}=7.7$-$200 GeV). The measurements are carried out by the STAR detector at mid-rapidity ($|y|<0.5$) and within transverse momentum range $0.4<p_{T}<0.8$ {\gevc}. The product of moments ({\SD} and \KV) are predicted to be sensitive to the correlation length and connected to ratios of baryon number susceptibility. We observe deviations below Poisson expectations in the most central collisions for all of …
Results from the photon multiplicity measurements using a fine granularity preshower photon multiplicity detector (PMD) at CERN SPS are discussed. These include study of pseudo-rapidity distributions of photons, scaling of photon multiplicity with number of participating nucleons, centrality dependence of mean transverse momentum of photons, event-by-event fluctuations in photon multiplicity and localised charged-neutral fluctuations. Basic features of the PMD to be used in STAR experiment at RHIC and in ALICE experiment at LHC are also discussed.
The event-by-event multiplicity distribution, the energy densities and energy density weighted eccentricity moments epsilon_n (up to n=6) at early times in heavy-ion collisions at both RHIC (root-s=200 GeV) and LHC (root-s=2.76 TeV) are computed in the IP-Glasma model. This framework combines the impact parameter dependent saturation model (IP-Sat) for nucleon parton distributions (constrained by HERA deeply inelastic scattering data) with an event-by-event classical Yang-Mills description of early-time gluon fields in heavy-ion collisions. The model produces multiplicity distributions that ar…
We discuss the production of $D$-mesons and $J/ψ$ in high multiplicity proton-proton and proton-nucleus collisions within the Color-Glass-Condensate (CGC) framework. We demonstrate that the modification of the LHC data on $D$ and $J/ψ$ yields in high multiplicity events relative to minimum bias events arise from a significant enhancement of the gluon saturation scales of the corresponding rare parton configurations in the colliding protons and nuclei. For a given event multiplicity, we predict these relative yields to be energy independent from $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV at RHIC to the highest LHC ene…
Strong modification of event-by-event fluctuations in global observables was proposed by several authors as an indicator of the phase transition in system evolution. We report the results of the analysis of STAR TPC data on the charged multiplicity and mean transverse momentum fluctuations in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=130 GeV. We discuss the centrality dependence of the observed fluctuations and compare the results with available data from lower collision energies and ISR data.
In the PHOBOS experiment, charged particles are measured in almost the full solid angle. This enables the study of fluctuations and correlations in the particle production over a very wide kinematic range. In this paper, we show results of a direct search for fluctuations identified by an unusual shape of the pseudorapidity distribution. In addition, we use analysis of correlations of the multiplicity in similar pseudorapidity bins, placed symmetrically in the forward and backward hemispheres, to test the hypothesis of production of particles in clusters.
We present the first measurement of multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of photons in the pseudorapidity region 2.3 < eta < 3.7 for different centralities in Au + Au collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 62.4 GeV. The pseudorapidity distribution of photons, dominated by neutral pion decays, has been compared to those of identified charged pions, photons, and inclusive charged particles from heavy ion and nucleon-nucleon collisions at various energies. Scaling of photon yield with number of participating nucleons and limiting fragmentation scenario for inclusive photon production has been studie…
Dihadron correlations are measured in d+Au collisions at 200 GeV by the STAR detector. The correlated yields with uniform background subtraction are studied in high- and low-multiplicity collisions. The effects of multiplicity selection bias on jet-like correlations are discussed. Finite correlated yields are observed on the near-side at large pseudo-rapidity separation in high-multiplicity collisions.
The recent results on net-proton and net-charge multiplicity fluctuations from the beam energy scan program at RHIC have drawn much attention to explore the critical point in the QCD phase diagram. Experimentally measured protons contain contribution from various processes such as secondaries from higher mass resonance decay, production process, and protons from the baryon stopping. Further, these contributions also fluctuate from event to event and can contaminate the dynamical fluctuations due to the critical point. We present the contribution of stopped proton and produced proton fluctuatio…
We report the higher order moments of the net-charge multiplicity distributions for the Au+Au collisions at \sNN = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV in the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). The energy and centrality dependence of higher moments and their products (such as $σ^2/M$, $Sσ$ and $κσ^{2}$) are presented. The data are also compared to Poisson expectations and Hadron Resonance Gas model calculations.
We present results on charged particle and transverse energy densities measured at mid-rapidity in Au-Au collisions at sqrt(s_{NN})=200 GeV. The mean transverse energy per charged particle is derived. The results are presented as a function of centrality, which is defined by the number of participating nucleons, and compared to results obtained in Au-Au collisions at sqrt{s_{NN})=130 GeV. A comparison with calculations from various theoretical models is performed.
The PHOBOS experiment is well positioned to obtain crucial information about relativistic heavy ion collisions at RHIC, combining a multiplicity counter with a multi-particle spectrometer. The multiplicity arrays will measure the charged particle multiplicity over the full solid angle. The spectrometer will be able to identify particles at mid-rapidity. The experiment is constructed almost exclusively of silicon pad detectors. Detectors of nine different types are configured in the multiplicity and vertex detector (22,000 channels) and two multi-particle spectrometers (120,000 channels). The o…
The PHOBOS experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory is studying interactions of heavy nuclei at the largest energies available in the laboratory. The high multiplicity of particles created in heavy ion collisions makes precise vertex reconstruction possible using information from a spectrometer and a specialized vertex detector with relatively small acceptances. For lower multiplicity events, a large acceptance, single layer multiplicity detector is used and special algorithms are developed to reconstruct the vertex, resulting in high efficienc…
We analyze the first results on charged particle multiplicity at RHIC in the conventional eikonal approach and in the framework of high density QCD. We extract the fraction $F$ of the hadron multiplicity originating from ``hard'' (i.e. proportional to the number of binary collisions) processes; we find a strong growth of this fraction with energy: $F(\sqrt{s}=56 {\rm GeV}) \simeq 22%$, while $F(\sqrt{s}=130 {\rm GeV}) \simeq 37 %$. This indicates a rapid increase in the density of the produced particles. We outline the predictions of high density QCD for the centrality, energy, and atomic numb…
We report the first measurements of the moments -- mean ($M$), variance ($σ^{2}$), skewness ($S$) and kurtosis ($κ$) -- of the net-charge multiplicity distributions at mid-rapidity in Au+Au collisions at seven energies, ranging from $\sqrt {s_{\rm NN}}$= 7.7 to 200 GeV, as a part of the Beam Energy Scan program at RHIC. The moments are related to the thermodynamic susceptibilities of net-charge, and are sensitive to the proximity of the QCD critical point. We compare the products of the moments, $σ^{2}/M$, $Sσ$ and $κσ^{2}$ with the expectations from Poisson and negative binomial distributions…
The energy and system size dependence of pseudorapidity ($η$) and multiplicity distributions of photons are measured in the region -2.3 $\leq$ $η$ $\leq$ -3.7 for Cu + Cu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 and 62.4 GeV. Photon multiplicity measurements at forward rapidity have been carried out using a Photon Multiplicity Detector (PMD) in the STAR experiment. Photons are found to follow longitudinal scaling for Cu + Cu collisions for 0-10% centrality. A Comparison of pseudorapidity distributions with HIIJING model is also presented.
We investigate the measurement of the sixth order cumulant and its ratio to the second order cumulant ($C_6/C_2$) in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The influence of statistics and different methods of centrality bin width correction on $C_6/C_2$ of net-proton multiplicity distributions is demonstrated. There is no satisfactory method to extract $C_6/C_2$ with the current statistics recorded at lower energies by STAR at RHIC. With statistics comparable to the expected statistics at the planned future RHIC Beam Energy Scan II (BES II), no energy dependence of $C_6/C_2$ is observed in central…
We derive a simple analytical scaling function which embodies the predictions of high density QCD on the energy, centrality, rapidity, and atomic number dependences of hadron multiplicities in nuclear collisions. Both centrality and rapidity dependences of hadron multiplicity in $Au-Au$ collisions as measured at RHIC at $\sqrt{s}= 130 {GeV}$ are well described in this approach. The centrality and rapidity dependences of hadron multiplicity at $\sqrt{s}= 200 \ {GeV}$ run at RHIC are predicted; the variation of these dependences with energy appear different from other approaches, and can be used…
Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at RHIC is important to search for the existence of the critical point in the QCD phase diagram. Lattice QCD have shown that the predictions of the susceptibility of the medium formed in heavy-ion collisions can be sensitive to the various moments (mean ($μ$) =${<x>}$, variance ($σ^2$) = ${<(x-μ)^2>}$, skewness (S) = $\frac{<(x-μ)^3>}{σ^3}$ and kurtosis ($κ$) =$\frac{<(x-μ)^4>}{σ^4} -3$) of conserved quantities like net-baryon number ($Δ$B), net-electric charge ($Δ$Q) and net-strangeness ($Δ$S). Any non-monotonic behavior of the higher moments would confirm the e…
Recently, Chatterjee et al used a hadronic transport model to estimate the resolution with which various experimental quantities select the impact parameter of relativistic heavy ion collisions at collision energies relevant to the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Measures based on particle multiplicity at forward rapidity were found to be significantly worse than those based on midrapidity multiplicity. Using the same model, we show that a slightly more sophisticated measure greatly improves the resolution based on forward rapidity particles; this …
We compute transverse momentum and momentum integrated multiplicity distributions consistently in the IP-Glasma model for proton-proton and proton-lead collisions at the LHC, in deuteron-gold collisions at RHIC, and in heavy ion collisions at both RHIC and LHC energies. Several sources of sub-nucleon scale contributions to the multiplicity distributions are identified. Our results, which are constrained by inclusive and diffractive deeply inelastic scattering data from HERA, are compared to measured distributions for a range of collision energies. These results are an essential first step in q…
The PHOBOS experiment at RHIC has recorded measurements for Au-Au collisions spanning nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies from 19.6 GeV to 200 GeV. Global observables such as elliptic flow and charged particle multiplicity provide important constraints on model predictions that characterize the state of matter produced in these collisions. The nearly 4 pi acceptance of the PHOBOS experiment provides excellent coverage for complete flow and multiplicity measurements. Results including beam energy and centrality dependencies are presented and compared to elementary systems.
It has been suggested that local parity violation in QCD would lead to charge separation of quarks by the Chiral Magnetic Effect (CME) in heavy ion collisions. Charge separation could yield a dynamical charge multiplicity asymmetry with respect to the reaction plane. In this talk, we report results on charge multiplicity asymmetry correlations in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au and d+Au collisions by the STAR experiment, as well as from the RHIC beam energy scan. We found that the correlation results could not be explained by CME alone. To gain further insights, we study our results as a funct…
The first measurements of charged particle pseudorapidity distributions obtained from Au + Au collisions at the maximum RHIC energy sqrt(s_{NN}) = 200 GeV) using the PHOBOS detector are presented. A comparison of the pseudorapidity distributions at energies 130 and 200 GeV for different centrality bins is made, including an estimate of the total number of charged particles. Away from the mid-rapidity region, a comparison between Pb + Pb at SPS energy sqrt(s_{NN}) = 17.3 GeV and Au + Au at RHIC energy sqrt(s_{NN}) = 130 GeV indicates that the extent of the limiting fragmentation region grows by…
Fluctuations of conserved quantities are sensitive observables to probe the signature of QCD phase transition and critical point in heavy-ion collisions. With the UrQMD model, we have studied the centrality and energy dependence of various order cumulants and cumulant ratios (up to fourth order) of net-proton,net-charge and net-kaon multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$= 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4, 200 GeV. The model results show that the production mechanism of the particles and anti-particles have significant impacts on the cumulants of net-particles multiplici…
We study within the IP-Glasma and two-component MC-Glauber models the effects of initial state geometry and fluctuations on multiplicities and eccentricities for several collision species at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These include copper-gold (Cu+Au), gold-gold (Au+Au), and uranium-uranium (U+U) collisions. The multiplicity densities per participant pair are very similar in all systems studied. Ellipticities vary strongly between collision systems, most significantly for central collisions, while fluctuation driven odd moments vary little between systems. Event-by-event distr…
In the framework of various Glauber-like models we compute several correlation observables in nuclear collisions at the SPS, RHIC, and LHC energies. We analyze fluctuations of the eccentricity of the fireball created in the collision, in particular the {variable-axes} harmonic moments $ε^\ast$, as well as the fluctuations of multiplicity of charged particles. We find moderate model dependence of the scaled standard deviation $σ(ε^\ast)/ε^\ast$ on the choice of the particular Glauber model. For all considered models the values of $σ(ε^\ast)/ε^\ast$ range from $\sim$~0.5 for central collisions t…
Multiplicity and pseudorapidity ($η$) density ($dN_{\rm ch}/dη$) distributions of charged hadrons provide key information towards understanding the particle production mechanisms and initial conditions of high-energy heavy-ion collisions. However, detector constraints limit the $η$-range across which charged particle measurements can be carried out. Extrapolating the measured distributions to large $η$-range by parameterizing measured distributions and by using calculations from event generators, we characterize the production of charged particles over the full kinematic range. In the present …
Fluctuations and correlations of conserved quantities (baryon number, strangeness, and charge) can be used to probe phases of strongly interacting QCD matter and the possible existence of a critical point in the phase diagram. The cumulants of the multiplicity distributions related to these conserved quantities are expected to be sensitive to possible increased fluctuations near a critical point and ratios of the cumulants can be directly compared to the ratios of the susceptibilities from Lattice QCD calculations. In these proceedings, the measurements of the cumulants of net-proton multiplic…
The long-range pseudo-rapidity correlations observed in pp and p+Pb collisions at the LHC have stimulated extensive interest. The tantalizing observation of similar effect by PHENIX calls for careful examination of the RHIC d+Au data. In this talk, we present dihadron correlations in multiplicity-selected d+Au collisions by STAR, in both $Δϕ$ and $Δη$ and from both TPC and FTPC.
The paper presents my recent investigations of volume corrections on the cumulant products of net-charge distributions in statistical model, corresponding to the data reported by the STAR collaboration. The corrected statistical expectations, under simple Poisson approximations, can reasonably explain the data measured in experiment. The results indicate that volume corrections play crucial role in event-by-event multiplicity fluctuation studies.
We investigate degree of coherence of pion sources produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions using multi-particle interferometry. In order to obtain ``true'' chaoticity, lambda^true from two-pion correlation functions measured in experiments, we make a correction for long-lived resonance decay contributions. Using this lambda^true and the weight factor which are obtained from parameter fitted to two- and three-pion correlation function, we calculate a chaotic fraction epsilon and the number of coherent sources alpha for different colliding energies. The result gives constraints on the sour…
Centrality definition in A$+$A collisions at colliders such as RHIC and LHC suffers from a correlated systematic uncertainty caused by the efficiency of detecting a p$+$p collision ($50\pm 5\%$ for PHENIX at RHIC). In A$+$A collisions where centrality is measured by the number of nucleon collisions, $N_{\rm coll}$, or the number of nucleon participants, $N_{\rm part}$, or the number of constituent quark participants, $N_{\rm qp}$, the error in the efficiency of the primary interaction trigger (Beam-Beam Counters) for a p$+$p collision leads to a correlated systematic uncertainty in $N_{\rm par…
The STAR Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is used to record collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The TPC is the central element in a suite of detectors that surrounds the interaction vertex. The TPC provides complete coverage around the beam-line, and provides complete tracking for charged particles within +- 1.8 units of pseudo-rapidity of the center-of-mass frame. Charged particles with momenta greater than 100 MeV/c are recorded. Multiplicities in excess of 3,000 tracks per event are routinely reconstructed in the software. The TPC measures 4 m in diameter by 4.2 m long, m…
The recent preliminary results from central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = $ 130 GeV from the STAR experiment at RHIC are presented and discussed along with the results on the $Λ$(1520) production in cental Pb+Pb and p+p collisions at $\sqrt{s} = $ 17 GeV from the NA49 experiment at the SPS. The $Λ$(1520) is measured with the invariant mass reconstruction of the decay products in the hadronic channel (K$^{-}$, p). The mean $Λ$(1520) multiplicity scaled by the number of participants decreases from p+p to Pb+Pb collisions at the same energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 17 GeV. An upper limit estima…
High Energy collisions of nuclei usually lead to the emission of evaporation neutrons from both ``beam'' and ``target'' nuclei. At the RHIC heavy ion collider with 100GeV/u beam energy, evaporation neutrons diverge by less than $~2$ milliradians from the beam axis Neutral beam fragments can be detected downstream of RHIC ion collisions (and a large aperture Accelerator dipole magnet) if $θ\leq$ 4 mr but charged fragments in the same angular range are usually too close to the beam trajectory. In this 'zero degree' region produced particles and other secondaries deposit negligible energy when co…
Studying fluctuations of conserved quantities, such as baryon number, strangeness, and charge, provides insights into the properties of matter created in high-energy nuclear collisions. Lattice QCD calculations suggest that higher moments of these quantities are sensitive to the phase structure of the hot and dense nuclear matter created in such collisions. In this paper, we present first experimental results of volume and temperature independent cumulant ratios of net-charge and net-proton distributions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}\!=\!14.5 \,{\rm GeV}$ completing the first RHIC …
Probing the nature of the QCD phase transition with higher-order net-proton number fluctuation and local parton density fluctuation measurements at RHIC-STAR
The first three measurements from the RHIC program were results on global observables: charged particle multiplicity (N_ch), transverse energy (E_T) and elliptic flow (v_2). They offer a look at the large-scale features of particle production in high-energy nuclear collisions, with particular insight into entropy production and collective behavior. Results from all of the RHIC experiments are discussed in light of data from lower energy nuclear collisions as well as from high-energy hadronic collisions to test our current understanding of the collision dynamics.
Multiplicity fluctuations at midrapidity in p+p collisions at high energies are described by a negative binomial distribution and exhibit approximate Koba-Nielsen-Olesen (KNO) scaling. We find that these KNO fluctuations are important also for reproducing the multiplicity distribution in d+Au collisions observed at RHIC, adding to the Glauber fluctuations of the number of binary collisions or participants. We predict that the multiplicity distribution in p+Pb collisions at the LHC also deviates little from the KNO scaling function. Finally, we analyze various moments of the eccentricity of the…
Full jet reconstruction in heavy-ion collisions enables a complete study of the modification of jet structure due to energy loss in hot and dense QCD matter, but is challenging due to the high multiplicity environment. The STAR and PHENIX collaborations at RHIC have recently presented measurements of fully reconstructed jets from p+p, Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}} = 200 \mathrm{GeV}$. We review the first results on inclusive jet spectra, di-jets and fragmentation functions and discuss their implications on understanding of jet quenching.
We present a detailed study of particle production at mid-rapidity in proton + proton collisions at RHIC for sqrt(s)=200GeV. The transverse momentum spectra and the <pT> of inclusive hadrons and identified particles as a function of multiplicity are measured in minimum bias, "soft" and "hard" event classes. It is found that the multiplicity dependence of <pT> in soft events in proton + proton collisions does not change from RHIC to Tevetron while there is no such scaling behavior in minimum-bias and hard events. The baryon and strangeness production derived from the particle ratios of K-/pi- a…
The IP-Glasma model of CGC combined with the Lund model of PYTHIA provides a very successful description of hadron production from gluon dominated non-equilibrium matter in various small collision systems. This new CGC+PYTHIA framework, naturally reproduces several characteristic features of the hadronic observables such as the mass ordering of $v_{2}(p_{T})$ and $\langle p_{T}\rangle$, often ascribed to collectivity driven by hydrodynamics at the LHC. In this contribution we extend our work to provide a systematic comparison of particle spectra and multiplicity distributions in p+p and d+Au c…
We report on the first measurement of Mutual Coulomb Dissociation in heavy ion collisions. We employ forward calorimeters to measure neutron multiplicity at beam rapidity in peripheral collisions. The cross-section for simultaneous electromagnetic breakup of Au nuclei at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=130$ GeV is $σ_{MCD}=3.67\pm 0.25$ barns in good agreement with calculations.
A very recent paper by the CMS collaboration \cite{cms_ridge} has created large discussion in the media, which call it important but did not explain why, in some places even calling it "unundestandable". While it is of course too soon to know what causes the correlations in question, a very similar observation in heavy ion collisions at RHIC has rather simple explanation related to explosion of high energy density matter. Perhaps this observation is the first hint for an explosive behavior in pp, which was anticipated and looked for for decades, yet never been seen.
Femtoscopic measurements at a variety of facilities have established a clear dependence of spatial scales with event multiplicity and particle transverse mass ($m_T$) in heavy ion collisions from $\sqrt(s_{NN}) \sim 2-200 GeV$. The $m_T$-dependence is thought to arise from collective, explosive flow of the system, as probed by independent measurements, while the multiplicity dependence reflects the increased spatial extent of the final state with decreasing impact parameter. Qualitatively similar dependences have been reported from high energy hadron and lepton collisions, where the conceptual…
We discuss several observables measured by PHOBOS that show common scaling features in Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at RHIC energies. In particular, we examine the centrality and energy dependence of the charged particle multiplicity, as well as the centrality dependence of the elliptic flow at mid-rapidity. The discrepancy between Cu+Cu and Au+Au of the final state azimuthal asymmetry (elliptic flow), relative to the initial state geometry of the collision, can be resolved by accounting for fluctuations in the description of the initial geometry.
Thermal photon production at mid-rapidity in Au+Au reactions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV is studied in the framework of a 2D+1 hydrodynamical model that describes efficiently the bulk identified hadron spectra at RHIC. The combined thermal plus NLO pQCD photon spectrum is in good agreement with the yields measured by the PHENIX experiment for all Au+Au centralities. Within our model, we demonstrate that the correlation of the thermal photon slopes with the charged hadron multiplicity in each centrality bin provides direct empirical information on the underlying degrees of freedom and on the e…
We present predictions of the mean multiplicity yields for different centrality classes of Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 5.02$ TeV at the LHC, obtained using the Monte-Carlo Modified Glauber model (MGM) [1]. Contrary to generally used standard Glauber calculations, the MGM takes into account the energy conservation in the soft particles production. The only one efficient model parameter was tuned and fixed previously (k=0.35) by fitting the available data on multiplicity for all colliding systems up to RHIC energies. The MGM has shown already a good predictive capability for the yields at $\…
Two-pion correlation functions in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 130$ GeV have been measured by the STAR (Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC) detector. The source size extracted by fitting the correlations grows with event multiplicity and decreases with transverse momentum. Anomalously large sizes or emission durations, which have been suggested as signals of quark-gluon plasma formation and rehadronization, are not observed. The HBT parameters display a weak energy dependence over a broad range in $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$.
We report our calculation of jet quenching and its azimuthal anisotropy in the high energy AA and high multiplicity pA and dA collisions. The purpose of this study is twofold. First, we improve our previous event-by-event studies, by properly implementing $p_t$ dependence in the modeling. We show that, within the jet "monography" scenario featuring a strong near-Tc-enhancement of jet energy loss, the computed high-$p_t$ nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and the harmonic coefficients in its azimuthal anisotropy $v_{2,\,3,\,4}$, agree well with the available data from both Relativistic Heavy …
One of the main goals of the RHIC Beam Energy Scan (BES) program is to study the QCD phase structure, which includes the search for the QCD critical point, over a wide range of chemical potential. Theoretical calculations predict that fluctuations of conserved quantities, such as baryon number (B), charge (Q), and strangeness (S), are sensitive to the correlation length of the dynamical system. Experimentally, higher moments of multiplicity distributions have been utilized to search for the QCD critical point in heavy-ion collisions. In this paper, we report recent efficiency-corrected cumulan…
Charged hadrons (0.15 < pt < 4 GeV/c) associated with a large pt trigger particle (4 < pt < 6 GeV/c) are statistically reconstructed in the large acceptance STAR TPC for p+p and Au+Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=200 GeV. Preliminary results on transverse momentum distributions of these hadrons are presented, separately on the near and away side from the trigger particle. An increase in the multiplicity and total scalar pt of these hadrons from p+p to central Au+Au collisions is observed. The away side distribution is found to be significantly softened in central Au+Au with respect to p+p collisio…
The first results from Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=130 GeV obtained with the PHENIX detector in the Year 2000 run at RHIC are presented. The mid-rapidity charged particle multiplicity and transverse energy per participating nucleon rise steadily with the number of participants, such that transverse energy per charged particle remains relatively constant as a function of centrality. Identified charged hadron spectra as well as $\bar{p}/p$ and $K^+/K^-$ ratios are discussed. Charged particle and neutral pion transverse momentum distributions in peripheral nuclear collisions are consisten…
We present the multiplicity and pseudorapidity distributions of photons produced in Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at \sqrt{s_NN} = 62.4 and 200 GeV. The photons are measured in the region -3.7 < η< -2.3 using the photon multiplicity detector in the STAR experiment at RHIC. The number of photons produced per average number of participating nucleon pairs increases with the beam energy and is independent of the collision centrality. For collisions with similar average numbers of participating nucleons the photon multiplicities are observed to be similar for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at a given beam…
The charged-particle multiplicity distribution and the transverse-energy distribution measured in heavy-ion collisions at top RHIC and LHC energies are described using the two-component model approach based on a convolution of the Monte Carlo Glauber model with the Weibull model for particle production. The model successfully describes the multiplicity and transverse-energy distribution of minimum-bias collision data for a wide range of energies. The Weibull-Glauber model can be used to determine the centrality classes in heavy-ion collisions as an alternative to the conventional negative bino…
We present results for the charged-particle multiplicity distribution at mid-rapidity in Au - Au collisions at sqrt(s_NN)=130 GeV measured with the PHENIX detector at RHIC. For the 5% most central collisions we find $dN_{ch}/dη_{|η=0} = 622 \pm 1 (stat) \pm 41 (syst)$. The results, analyzed as a function of centrality, show a steady rise of the particle density per participating nucleon with centrality.
