We present measurements of the triaxial dark matter halo shapes and alignment correlation functions in the Millennium and Millennium-2 dark matter N-body simulations. These two simulations allow us to measure the distributions of halo shapes down to 10% of the virial radius over a halo mass range of 6E9 - 2E14 M_sun/h. We largely confirm previous results on the distributions of halo axis ratios as a function of halo mass, but we find that the median angle between halo major axes at different halo radii can vary by a factor of 2 between the Millennium-1 and 2 simulations because of the different mass resolution. Thus, error in the shape determinations from limited resolution is potentially degenerate with the misalignment of halo inner and outer shapes used to constrain Brightest Cluster Galaxy alignments in previous works. We also present simplifying parameterizations for the 3-D halo-mass alignment correlation functions that are necessary ingredients for triaxial halo models of large-scale structure and models of galaxy intrinsic alignments as contaminants for cosmic shear surveys. We measure strong alignments between halos of all masses and the surrounding dark matter overdensities out to several tens of Mpc/h, in agreement with observed shear-galaxy and cluster shape correlations. We use these measurements to forecast the contribution to the weak lensing signal around galaxy clusters from correlated mass along the line-of-sight. For prolate clusters with major axes aligned with the line-of-sight the fraction of the weak lensing signal from mass external to the cluster can be twice that predicted if the excess halo alignment correlation is assumed to be zero.
Ecology of dark matter haloes -II. Effects of interactions on the alignment of halo pairs
The standard cosmological paradigm currently lacks a detailed account of physics in the dark sector, the dark matter and energy that dominate cosmic evolution. In this paper, we consider the distinguishing factors between three alternative models - warm dark matter, quintessence and coupled dark matter-energy - and \lcdm{} through numerical simulations of cosmological structure formation. Key halo statistics - halo spin/velocity alignment between large-scale structure and neighboring haloes, halo formation time and migration - were compared across cosmologies within the redshift range 0$\leq$$…
Using $N$-body simulations of cosmological large-scale structure formation, for the first time, we show that the anisotropic primordial non-Gaussianity (PNG) causes a scale-dependent modification, given by $1/k^2$ at small $k$ limit, in the three-dimensional power spectra of halo shapes (intrinsic alignments), whilst the conventional power spectrum of halo number density field remains unaffected. We discuss that wide-area imaging and spectrocopic surveys observing the same region of the sky allow us to constrain the quadrupole PNG coefficient $f_{\rm NL}^{s=2}$ at a precision comparable with o…
We present two new diagnostics based on the intrinsic shape alignments of group/cluster size dark matter halos to disentangle the effect of $f(R)$ gravity from that of massive neutrinos. Using the snapshot data from a series of the {\small DUSTGRAIN}-{pathfinder} $N$-body simulations for the Planck $Λ$CDM cosmology and three $f(R)$ gravity models with massive neutrinos ($ν$), we first determine the probability density functions of the alignment angles between the shape orientations of massive halos and the minor principal axes of the local tidal fields. The numerically obtained results turn ou…
The fuzzy dark matter (FDM) scenario has received increased attention in recent years due to the small-scale challenges of the vanilla Lambda cold dark matter ($Λ$CDM) cosmological model and the lack of any experimental evidence for any candidate particle. In this study, we use cosmological $N$-body simulations to investigate high-redshift dark matter halos and their responsiveness to an FDM-like power spectrum cutoff on small scales in the primordial density perturbations. We study halo density profiles, shapes and alignments in FDM-like cosmologies (the latter two for the first time) by prov…
The shape of dark matter haloes plays a critical role in constraining cosmology with upcoming large-scale structure surveys. In this paper, we study the correlations between the triaxial shapes and formation histories in dark matter haloes in the MultiDark Planck 2 N-body cosmological simulation. We find that halo ellipticity is strongly correlated with halo properties that serve as proxies of halo formation history, such as halo concentration and the peak-centroid offset. In particular, the correlation between halo ellipticity and halo concentration is nearly independent of the halo density p…

We investigate the alignment of galaxies and haloes relative to cosmic web filaments using the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulation. We identify filaments by applying the NEXUS+ method to the mass distribution and the Bisous formalism to the galaxy distribution. Both web finders return similar filamentary structures that are well aligned and that contain comparable galaxy populations. EAGLE haloes have an identical spin alignment with filaments as their counterparts in dark matter only simulations: a complex mass dependent trend with low mass haloes spinning preferentially parallel to and high mass…
The Relation Between Halo Shape, Velocity Dispersion and Formation Time
The non-spherical shapes of dark matter and gas distributions introduce systematic uncertainties that affect observable-mass relations and selection functions of galaxy groups and clusters. However, the triaxial gas distributions depend on the non-linear physical processes of halo formation histories and baryonic physics, which are challenging to model accurately. In this study we explore a machine learning approach for modelling the dependence of gas shapes on dark matter and baryonic properties. With data from the IllustrisTNG hydrodynamical cosmological simulations, we develop a machine lea…
We use the IllustrisTNG suite of cosmological simulations to measure intrinsic alignment (IA) bispectra of dark matter subhalos between redshifts 0 and 1. We decompose the intrinsic shear field into E- and B-modes and find that the bispectra $B_{δδ\mathrm{E}}$ and $B_{δ\mathrm{EE}}$, between the matter overdensity field, $δ$, and the E-mode field, are detected with high significance. We also model the IA bispectra analytically using a method consistent with the two-point non-linear alignment model. We use this model and the simulation measurements to infer the intrinsic alignment amplitude $A_…
We use a suite of $N$-body simulations to study intrinsic alignments (IA) of halo shapes with the surrounding large-scale structure in the $Λ$CDM model. For this purpose, we develop a novel method to measure multipole moments of the three-dimensional power spectrum of the $E$-mode field of halo shapes with the matter/halo distribution, $P_{δE}^{(\ell)}(k)$ (or $P^{(\ell)}_{{\rm h}E}$), and those of the auto-power spectrum of the $E$ mode, $P^{(\ell)}_{EE}(k)$, based on the $E$/$B$-mode decomposition. The IA power spectra have non-vanishing amplitudes over the linear to nonlinear scales, and th…
The anisotropy or triaxiality of massive dark matter haloes largely defines the structure of the cosmic web, in particular the filaments that join the haloes together. Here we investigate such oriented correlations in mass-Peak Patch halo catalogues by using the initial strain tensor of spherical proto-halo regions to orient the haloes. To go beyond the spherically averaged two-point correlation function of haloes we use oriented stacks to compute oriented two-point correlations: we explicitly break isotropy by imposing a local frame set by the strain tensor of the reference halo before stacki…
We investigate impacts of long-wavelength gravitational waves (GWs) on nonlinear structure formation by utilizing the tidal separate universe simulations. Based on the equivalence of a long-wavelength GW to a uniform tidal field in a local frame, we provide a way to incorporate a long-wavelength GW into the tidal separate universe simulation as an effective anisotropic expansion. This methodology enables us to study effects of GWs on large-scale structure efficiently. We measure the anisotropic imprint in the local power spectrum from the tidal separate universe simulations with GWs, which cor…

We present the on-going activity to characterize the geometrical properties of the gas and dark matter haloes using multi-wavelength observations of galaxy clusters. The role of the SZ signal in describing the gas distribution is discussed for the pilot case of the CLASH object MACS J1206.2-0847. Preliminary images of the NIKA2 and ALMA exposures are presented.
Aims: We study the dependence of the dynamical properties of dark matter halos on their environment in a whole-sky $Λ$CDM light-cone simulation extending to $z\sim 0.65$. The properties of interest are halo shape (parametrized by its principal axes), spin and virialisation status, the alignment of halo spin and shape, as well as the shape-shape and spin-spin alignments among halo neighbours. Methods: We define the halo environment using the notion of halo isolation status determined by the distance to its nearest neighbor. This defines a maximum spherical region around each halo devoid of othe…
The alignment between halo spins and the cosmic web is still poorly understood despite being a widely studied topic. Here, we study this alignment within the context of tidal torque theory (TTT) and deviations from it. To this end, we analyze the evolution of the shape and spin direction of proto-haloes, i.e. of all the volume elements associated to a $z=0$ halo, with respect to the present-day filaments. We find that the major axis of proto-haloes undergoes a major change, from being strongly perpendicular to the filament spine in the initial conditions, to being preferentially aligned at the…
