Let $G$ be a simply connected, solvable Lie group and $Γ$ a lattice in $G$. The deformation space $\mathcal{D}(Γ,G)$ is the orbit space associated to the action of $\Aut(G)$ on the space $\mathcal{X}(Γ,G)$ of all lattice embeddings of $Γ$ into $G$. Our main result generalises the classical rigidity theorems of Mal'tsev and Saitô for lattices in nilpotent Lie groups and in solvable Lie groups of real type. We prove that the deformation space of every Zariski-dense lattice $Γ$ in $G$ is finite and Hausdorff, provided that the maximal nilpotent normal subgroup of $G$ is connected. This implies that every lattice in a solvable Lie group virtually embeds as a Zariski-dense lattice with finite deformation space. We give examples of solvable Lie groups $G$ which admit Zariski-dense lattices $Γ$ such that $\mathcal{D}(Γ,G)$ is countably infinite, and also examples where the maximal nilpotent normal subgroup of $G$ is connected and simultaneously $G$ has lattices with uncountable deformation space.
In this article, we discuss the local rigidity of Clifford-Klein forms of homogeneous spaces of 1-connected completely solvable Lie groups. In fact, we introduce a splitting of the local rigidity: vertical rigidity and horizontal rigidity. By using this splitting, we refine some existing results about the local rigidity and introduce a new approach to Baklouti's conjecture about the local rigidity.
Let $M$ be a compact connected pseudo-Riemannian manifold on which a solvable connected Lie group $G$ of isometries acts transitively. We show that $G$ acts almost freely on $M$ and that the metric on $M$ is induced by a bi-invariant pseudo-Riemannian metric on $G$. Furthermore, we show that the identity component of the isometry group of $M$ coincides with $G$.
We present several deformation and rigidity results within the classes of closed Riemannian manifolds which either are $2k$-Einstein (in the sense that their $2k$-Ricci tensor is constant) or have constant $2k$-Gauss-Bonnet curvature. The results hold for a family of manifolds containing all non-flat space forms and the main ingredients in the proofs are explicit formulae for the linearizations of the above invariants obtained by means of the formalism of double forms.
Given a closed hyperbolic Riemannian surface, the aim of the present paper is to describe an explicit construction of smooth deformations of the hyperbolic metric into Finsler metrics that are not Riemannian and whose properties are such that the classical Riemannian results about entropy rigidity, marked length spectrum rigidity and boundary rigidity all fail to extend to the Finsler category.
We propose a unified computational framework for the problem of deformation and rigidity of submanifolds in a homogeneous space under geometric constraint. A notion of 1-rigidity of a submanifold under admissible deformations is introduced. It measures how a deformation deviates from a one parameter family of motions up to 1st order. We implement this method to rigidity of CR submanifolds in spheres. A class of submanifolds called Bochner rigid submanifolds are shown to be 1-rigid under type preserving CR deformations. This 1-rigidity is then extended to a local rigidity, which roughly states …
We study scalar curvature deformation for asymptotically locally hyperbolic (ALH) manifolds with nonempty compact boundary. We show that the scalar curvature map is locally surjective among either (1) the space of metrics that coincide exponentially toward the boundary, or (2) the space of metrics with arbitrarily prescribed nearby Bartnik boundary data. Using those results, we characterize the ALH manifolds that minimize the Wang-Chruściel-Herzlich mass integrals in great generality and establish the rigidity of the positive mass theorems.
In this paper, an obstruction against the integrability of certain infinitesimal solitonic deformations is given. Using this obstruction, we show that the complex projective spaces of even complex dimension are rigid as Ricci solitons although they have infinitesimal solitonic deformations.
We classify the translators to the mean curvature flow in the three-dimensional solvable group $Sol_3$ that are invariant under the action of a one-parameter group of isometries of the ambient space. In particular we show that $Sol_3$ admits graphical translators defined on a half-plane, in contrast with a rigidity result of Shahriyari for translators in the Euclidean space. Moreover we exhibit some non-existence results.
Unlike Legendrian submanifolds, the deformation problem of coisotropic submanifolds can be obstructed. Starting from this observation, we single out in the contact setting the special class of integral coisotropic submanifolds as the direct generalization of Legendrian submanifolds for what concerns deformation and moduli theory. Indeed, being integral coisotropic is proved to be a rigid condition, and moreover the integral coisotropic deformation problem is unobstructed with discrete moduli space.
Let $(X, g_0)$ be a complete, simply connected Riemannian manifold with sectional curvatures $K_{g_0}$ satisfying $-b^2 \leq K_{g_0} \leq -1$ for some $b \geq 1$. Let $g_1$ be a Riemannian metric on $X$ such that $g_1 = g_0$ outside a compact in $X$, and with sectional curvatures $K_{g_1}$ satisfying $K_{g_1} \leq -1$. The identity map $id : (X, g_0) \to (X, g_1)$ is bi-Lipschitz, and hence induces a homeomorphism between the boundaries at infinity of $(X, g_0)$ and $(X, g_1)$, which we denote by $\hat{id}_{g_0, g_1} : \partial_{g_0} X \to \partial_{g_1} X$. We show that if the boundary map $\…
We prove that the bi-invariant Einstein metric on $SU_{2n+1}$ is isolated in the moduli space of Einstein metrics, even though it admits infinitesimal deformations. This gives a non-Kähler, non-product example of this phenomenon adding to the famous example of $\mathbb{CP}^{2n}\times\mathbb{CP}^{1}$ found by Koiso. We apply our methods to derive similar solitonic rigidity results for the Kähler--Einstein metrics on `odd' Grassmannians. We also make explicit a connection between non-integrable deformations and the dynamical instability of metrics under Ricci flow.
The Stoker problem, first formulated in 1968, consists in understanding to what extent a convex polyhedron is determined by its dihedral angles. By means of the double construction, this problem is intimately related to rigidity issues for 3-dimensional cone-manifolds. In a former paper, two such rigidity results were proven, implying that the infinitesimal version of the Stoker conjecture is true in the hyperbolic and Euclidean cases. In this second article, we prove that local rigidity holds and obtain that the space of convex hyperbolic polyhedra with given combinatorial type is locally par…
The deformation theory of hyperbolic and Euclidean cone-manifolds with all cone angles less then 2π plays an important role in many problems in low dimensional topology and in the geometrization of 3-manifolds. Furthermore, various old conjectures dating back to Stoker about the moduli of convex hyperbolic and Euclidean polyhedra can be reduced to the study of deformations of cone-manifolds by doubling a polyhedron across its faces. This deformation theory has been understood by Hodgson and Kerckhoff when the singular set has no vertices, and by Weiß when the cone angles are less than π. We pr…
The paper is centered around a new proof of the infinitesimal rigidity of smooth closed surfaces with everywhere positive Gauss curvature. We use a reformulation that replaces deformation of an embedding by deformation of the metric inside the body bounded by the surface. The proof is obtained by studying derivatives of the Hilbert-Einstein functional with boundary term. This approach is in a sense dual to proving the Gauss infinitesimal rigidity, that is rigidity with respect to the Gauss curvature parametrized by the Gauss map, by studying derivatives of the volume bounded by the surface. We…
Using a hyperKähler rotation on complex structures of a Calabi-Yau 2-fold and rolling of an isotropic 2-submanifold in a symplectic 6-manifold, we construct, by gluing, a natural family of immersed Lagrangian deformations of a branched covering of a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold and study how they deviate from being deformable to a family of special Lagrangian deformations by examining in detail Joyce's criteria on this family. The result suggests a potential image-support rigidity of A-branes that wrap around a special Lagrangian 3-sphere in a Calabi-Yau 3-fold, which res…
We show that any compact orientable hyperbolic 3-cone-manifold with cone angle at most πcan be continuously deformed to a complete hyperbolic manifold homeomorphic to the complement of the singularity. This together with the local rigidity by Hodgson and Kerckhoff implies the global rigidity for compact orientable hyperbolic 3-cone-manifolds under the same angle assumption.
In this note, we study deformations of quaternionic hyperbolic lattices in larger quaternionic hyperbolic spaces and prove local rigidity results. On the other hand, surface groups are shown to be more flexible in quaternionic hyperbolic plane than in complex hyperbolic plane.
We show that if the structure algebra of a Riemannian foliation F on a closed manifold M is nilpotent, then the integral of the Álvarez class of (M,F) along every closed path is the exponential of an algebraic number. By this result and the continuity of the Álvarez class under deformations shown in arXiv:1009.1098v2, we prove that the Álvarez class and the geometrically tautness of Riemannian foliations on a closed manifold M are invariant under deformation, if the fundamental group of M has polynomial growth.
We study deformations of irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces $S$ of the compact type, known to be locally rigid, as projective-algberaic manifolds and prove that no jump of complex structures can occur. For each $S$ of rank $\ge 2$ there is an associated reductive linear group $G$ such that $S$ admits a holomorphic $G$-structure, corresponding to a reduction of the structure group of the tangent bundle. $S$ is characterized as the unique simply-connected compact complex manifold admitting such a $G$-structure which is at the same time integrable. To prove the deformation rigidity of $S$ it …
This thesis is divided into two parts. In the first part we study completely integrable systems, and their underlying structures, in detail. We study their deformation theory and the different equivalence relations surrounding it. We motivate the definition of weak equivalence (found in the literature) by studying different interpretations of the concept `singular Lagrangian foliation'. Finally, we prove a normal form theorem inspired by the Moser path method. In the second part we study the deformation theory of a PDE with a pseudogroup of symmetries in general. We prove that a solution is ri…
In this paper we extend the local scalar curvature rigidity result in [6] to a small domain on general vacuum static spaces, which confirms the interesting dichotomy of local surjectivity and local rigidity about the scalar curvature in general in the light of the paper [10]. We obtain the local scalar curvature rigidity of bounded domains in hyperbolic spaces. We also obtain the global scalar curvature rigidity for conformal deformations of metrics in the domains, where the lapse functions are positive, on vacuum static spaces with positive scalar curvature, and show such domains are maximal,…
This is the second article of a sequence of research on deformations of Q-curvature. In the previous one, we studied local stability and rigidity phenomena of Q-curvature. In this article, we mainly investigate the volume comparison with respect to Q-curvature. In particular, we show that volume comparison theorem holds for metrics close to strictly stable positive Einstein metrics. This result shows that Q-curvature can still control the volume of manifolds under certain conditions, which provides a fundamental geometric characterization of Q-curvature. Applying the same technique, we derive …
Suppose that a compact quantum group Q acts faithfully and isomet- rically (in the sense of [10]) on a smooth compact, oriented, connected Riemannian manifold M . If the manifold is stably parallelizable then it is shown that the compact quantum group is necessarily commutative as a C \ast algebra i.e. Q = C(G) for some compact group G. Using this, it is also proved that the quantum isometry group of Rieffel deformation of such manifold M must be a Rieffel-Wang deformation of C(ISO(M))
We study the deformation of spherical conical metrics with at least some of the cone angles larger than $2π$. We show in this note via synthetic geometry that for one family of such metrics, there is local rigidity in the choice of cone positions if angles are fixed. This gives an evidence of the analytic obstruction considered in recent works of Mazzeo and author.
This work builds on the foundation laid by Gordon and Wilson in the study of isometry groups of solvmanifolds, i.e. Riemannian manifolds admitting a transitive solvable group of isometries. We restrict ourselves to a natural class of solvable Lie groups called almost completely solvable; this class includes the completely solvable Lie groups. When the commutator subalgebra contains the center, we have a complete description of the isometry group of any left-invariant metric using only metric Lie algebra information. Using our work on the isometry group of such spaces, we study quotients of sol…
We apply the Nash-Moser theorem for exact sequences of R. Hamilton to the context of deformations of Lie algebras and we discuss some aspects of the scope of this theorem in connection with the polynomial ideal associated to the variety of nilpotent Lie algebras. This allows us to introduce the space $H_{k-nil}^2(\mathfrak{g},\mathfrak{g})$, and certain subspaces of it, that provide fine information about the deformations of $\mathfrak{g}$ in the variety of $k$-step nilpotent Lie algebras. Then we focus on degenerations and rigidity in the variety of $k$-step nilpotent Lie algebras of dimensio…
Take two isomorphic convex co-compact co-infinite volume Kleinian groups, whose regular sets are diffeomorphic. The quotient of hyperbolic 3-space by these groups gives two hyperbolic 3-manifolds whose scattering operators may be compared. We prove that the operator norm of the difference between the scattering operators is small, then the groups are related by a coorespondingly small quasi-conformal deformation. This in turn implies that the two hyperbolic 3-manifolds are quasi-isometric.
