We derive a sequence of measures whose corresponding Jacobi matrices have special properties and a general mapping of an open quantum system onto 1D semi infinite chains with only nearest neighbour interactions. Then we proceed to use the sequence of measures and the properties of the Jacobi matrices to derive an expression for the spectral density describing the open quantum system when an increasing number of degrees of freedom in the environment have been embedded into the system. Finally, we derive convergence theorems for these residual spectral densities.
We study electron pumping in the strong coupling and non-Markovian regime. Our model is a single quantum dot with periodically modulated energy and tunnelling amplitudes. We identify four parameters to control the direction of the current: the driving phase, the coupling strength, the driving frequency and the location of the maxima of the spectral density. In the high-frequency regime, we use a Markovian embedding strategy to map our model to three serial quantum dots weakly coupled to the reservoirs allowing us to use a Floquet master equation. We observe a rectification effect of the pumped…
Ontological theories of quantum mechanics describe a single system by means of well-defined classical variables and attribute the quantum uncertainties to our ignorance about the underlying reality represented by these variables. We consider the general class of ontological theories describing a quantum system by a set of variables with Markovian (either deterministic or stochastic) evolution. We provide the first proof that the number of continuous variables can not be smaller than 2N-2, N being the Hilbert space dimension. Thus, any ontological Markovian theory of quantum mechanics requires …
A matrix product state approach to non-Markovian, classical and quantum processes is discussed. In the classical case, the Radon-Nikodym derivative of all processes can be embedded into quantum measurement procedure. In the both cases, quantum and classical, the master equation can be derived from a projecting a quantum Markovian process onto a lower dimensional subspace.
We propose a method to study the thermodynamic behaviour of small systems beyond the weak coupling and Markovian approximation, which is different in spirit from conventional approaches. The idea is to redefine the system and environment such that the effective, redefined system is again coupled weakly to Markovian residual baths and thus, allows to derive a consistent thermodynamic framework for this new system-environment partition. To achieve this goal we make use of the reaction coordinate mapping, which is a general method in the sense that it can be applied to an arbitrary (quantum or cl…
Spontaneous collapse models and Bohmian mechanics are two different solutions to the measurement problem plaguing orthodox quantum mechanics. They have, a priori nothing in common. At a formal level, collapse models add a non-linear noise term to the Schrödinger equation, and extract definite measurement outcomes either from the wave function (e.g. mass density ontology) or the noise itself (flash ontology). Bohmian mechanics keeps the Schrödinger equation intact but uses the wave function to guide particles (or fields), which comprise the primitive ontology. Collapse models modify the predict…
We exploit the properties of chain mapping transformations of bosonic environments to identify a finite collection of modes able to capture the characteristic features, or fingerprint, of the environment. Moreover we show that the countable infinity of residual bath modes can be replaced by a universal Markovian closure, namely a small collection of damped modes undergoing a Lindblad-type dynamics whose parametrization is independent of the spectral density under consideration. We show that the Markovian closure provides a quadratic speed-up with respect to standard chain mapping techniques an…
For a quantum gas, being subject to continuous feedback of a macroscopic observable, the single-particle dynamics is studied. Albeit feedback-induced particle correlations, it is shown that analytic solutions are obtained by formally extending the single-particle Hilbert space by an auxiliary degree of freedom. The particle's motion is then fed by colored noise, which effectively maps quantum-statistical correlations onto the single particle. Thus, the single particle in the continuously controlled gas follows a non-Markovian trajectory in phase-space.
We study the dynamics of the 2+1 Dirac oscillator exactly and find spin oscillations due to a {\it Zitterbewegung} of purely relativistic origin. We find an exact mapping of this quantum-relativistic system onto a Jaynes-Cummings model, describing the interaction of a two-level atom with a quantized single-mode field. This equivalence allows us to map a series of quantum optical phenomena onto the relativistic oscillator, and viceversa. We make a realistic experimental proposal, at reach with current technology, for studying the equivalence of both models using a single trapped ion.
One long-standing difficult problem in quantum dissipative dynamics is to solve the spin-boson model in a non-Markovian regime where a tractable systematic master equation does not exist. The spin-boson model is particularly important due to its crucial applications in quantum noise control and manipulation as well as its central role in developing quantum theories of open systems. Here we solve this important model by developing a non-Markovian quantum Langevin approach. By projecting the quantum Langevin equation onto the coherent states of the bath, we can derivie a set of non-Markovian qua…
We report an experiment on mapping a quantum state of light onto the ground state spin of an ensemble of Cs atoms with the life time of 2 milliseconds. Quantum memory for one of the two quadrature phase operators of light is demonstrated with vacuum and squeezed states of light. The sensitivity of the mapping procedure at the level of approximately one photon/sec per Hz is shown. The results pave the road towards complete (storing both quadrature phase observables) quantum memory for Gaussian states of light. The experiment also sheds new light on fundamental limits of sensitivity of the magne…
Here, a new two-dimensional process, discrete in time and space, that yields the results of both a random walk and a quantum random walk, is introduced. This model describes the population distribution of four coin states |1>,-|1>, |0> -|0> in space without interference, instead of two coin states |1>, |0> .For the case of no boundary conditions, the model is similar to a Markov chain with a stochastic matrix, i.e., it conserves the population distribution of the four coin states, and by using a proper transformation, yield probability distributions of the two quantum states |1>, |0> in space,…
New exact analytical bound-state solutions of the D-dimensional Klein-Gordon equation for a large set of couplings and potential functions are obtained via mapping onto the nonrelativistic bound-state solutions of the one-dimensional generalized Morse potential. The eigenfunctions are expressed in terms of generalized Laguerre polynomials, and the eigenenergies are expressed in terms of solutions of irrational equations at the worst. Several analytical results found in the literature, including the so-called Klein-Gordon oscillator, are obtained as particular cases of this unified approach
We develop the equivalence between the two-dimensional Dirac oscillator and the anti-Jaynes-Cummings model within a q-deformed scenario. We solve the Hamiltonian spectrum and the time evolution for number and coherent initial states, focusing on the appearance of the Zitterbewegung effect. We show the lack of preservation of the q-deformed versions of the total angular momentum that reproduces a collapse-revival structure. We provide suitable relations for the non relativistic limit.
We present a general scheme to map correlated nonequilibrium quantum impurity problems onto an auxiliary open quantum system of small size. The infinite fermionic reservoirs of the original system are thereby replaced by a small number $N_B$ of noninteracting auxiliary bath sites whose dynamics is described by a Lindblad equation. Due to the presence of the intermediate bath sites, the overall dynamics acting on the impurity site is non-Markovian. With the help of an optimization scheme for the auxiliary Lindblad parameters, an accurate mapping is achieved, which becomes exponentially exact up…
We report on optical detection of a single photostable Ce3+ ion in an yttrium aluminium garnet (YAG) crystal and on its magneto-optical properties at room temperature. The quantum state of an electron spin of the emitting level of cerium ion in YAG can be initialized by circularly polarized laser pulse. Furthermore, its quantum state can be read out by observing temporal behaviour of circularly polarized fluorescence of the ion. This implies direct mapping of the spin quantum state of Ce3+ ion onto the polarization state of the emitted photon and represents one-way quantum interface between a …

Non-Markovian effects are important in modeling the behavior of open quantum systems arising in solid-state physics, quantum optics as well as in study of biological and chemical systems. The non-Markovian environment is often approximated by discrete bosonic modes, thus mapping it to a Lindbladian or Hamiltonian simulation problem. While systematic constructions of such modes have been previously proposed, the resulting approximation lacks rigorous and general convergence guarantees. In this letter, we show that under some physically motivated assumptions on the system-environment interaction…
A new model maps a quantum random walk described by a Hadamard operator to a particular case of a birth and death process. The model is represented by a 2D Markov chain with a stochastic matrix, i.e., all the transition rates are positive, although the Hadamard operator contains negative entries (this is possible by increasing the dimensionality of the system). The probability distribution of the walker population is preserved using the Markovian property. By applying a proper transformation to the population distribution of the random walk, the probability distributions of the quantum states …
The dynamics of finite dimension open quantum systems is studied with the help of the simplest possible form of projection operators, namely the ones which project only onto one dimensional subspaces. The simplicity of the action of the projection operators always leads to an analytical solution of the dynamical master equation, even in the non-Markovian case, in any perturbative order. The analytical solution correctly reproduces the short-time dynamics, and can be used to recursively recover the dynamics for an arbitrary time interval with arbitrary precision. The necessary number of relevan…
We experimentally demonstrate an ultrafast method for preparing spin states of donor-bound electrons in GaAs with single laser pulses. Each polarization state of a preparation pulse has a direct mapping onto a spin state, with bijective correspondence between the Poincaré-sphere (for photon polarization) and Bloch-sphere (for spin) state representations. The preparation is governed by a stimulated Raman process and occurs orders of magnitude faster than the spontaneous emission and spin dephasing. Similar dynamics governs our ultrafast optical Kerr detection of the spin coherence, thus getting…
The (Berry-Aharonov-Anandan) geometric phase acquired during a cyclic quantum evolution of finite-dimensional quantum systems is studied. It is shown that a pure quantum state in a (2J+1)-dimensional Hilbert space (or, equivalently, of a spin-J system) can be mapped onto the partition function of a gas of independent Dirac strings moving on a sphere and subject to the Coulomb repulsion of 2J fixed test charges (the Majorana stars) characterizing the quantum state. The geometric phase may be viewed as the Aharonov-Bohm phase acquired by the Majorana stars as they move through the gas of Dirac s…
In this paper, the 2+1 Dirac-Moshinsky oscillator (2+1 DMO) coupled to an external isospin field is mapped onto the Jaynes-Cummings model (JCM), which describes the interaction between two two-level systems and a quantum single-mode field. The time-dependent wave function and the density matrix are obtained in the two cases. In the first case, the quantum number state is considered, while in the second case, the coherent state is considered as an initial state. The effect of both the detuning parameter and the coherence angle are studied on the entanglement and on the population inversion. It …
The time-convolutionless (TCL) projection operator technique allows a systematic analysis of the non-Markovian quantum dynamics of open systems. We introduce a class of projection superoperators which project the states of the total system onto certain correlated system-environment states. It is shown that the application of the TCL technique to this class of correlated superoperators enables the non-perturbative treatment of the dynamics of system-environment models for which the standard approach fails in any finite order of the coupling strength. We demonstrate further that the correlated s…
Open quantum systems (OQS) cannot always be described with the Markov approximation, which requires a large separation of system and environment time scales. Here, we give an overview of some of the most important techniques available to tackle the dynamics of an OQS beyond the Markov approximation. Some of these techniques, such as master equations, Heisenberg equations and stochastic methods, are based on solving the reduced OQS dynamics, while others, such as path integral Monte Carlo or chain mapping approaches, are based on solving the dynamics of the full system. We emphasize the physica…
A new model that maps a quantum random walk described by a Hadamard operator to a particular case of a random walk is presented. The model is represented by a Markov chain with a stochastic matrix, i.e., all the transition rates are positive, although the Hadamard operator contains negative entries. Using a proper transformation that is applied to the random walk distribution after n steps, the probability distributions in space of the two quantum states |1>, |0> are revealed. These show that a quantum walk can be entirely mapped to a particular case of a higher dimension of a random walk mode…
We develop an exact framework to describe the non-Markovian dynamics of an open quantum system interacting with an environment modeled by a generalized spectral density function. The approach relies on mapping the initial system onto an auxiliary configuration, comprising the original open system coupled to a small number of discrete modes, which in turn are each coupled to an independent Markovian reservoir. Based on the connection between the discrete modes and the poles of the spectral density function, we show how expanding the system using the discrete modes allows for the full inclusion …

Motivated by recent prototypes of engineered atomic spin devices, we study a fully connected system of $N$ spins $1/2$, modeled by the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model of a collective spin $s=N/2$ in the presence of Markovian dissipation processes. We determine and classify the different phases of the dissipative LMG model with Markovian dissipation, including the properties of the steady-state and the dynamic behavior in the asymptotic long-time regime. Employing variational methods and a systematic approach based on the Holstein-Primakoff mapping, we determine the phase diagram and the spect…
Repulsive and attractive interactions usually lead to very different physics. Striking exceptions exist in the dynamics of driven-dissipative quantum systems. For the example of a photonic Bose-Hubbard dimer, we establish a one-to-one mapping relating the cases of onsite repulsion and attraction. We prove that the mapping is valid for an entire class of Markovian open quantum systems with time-reversal invariant Hamiltonian and physically meaningful inverse-sign Hamiltonian. To underline the broad applicability of the mapping, we illustrate the one-to-one correspondence between the nonequilibr…
Neuroevolution, a field that draws inspiration from the evolution of brains in nature, harnesses evolutionary algorithms to construct artificial neural networks. It bears a number of intriguing capabilities that are typically inaccessible to gradient-based approaches, including optimizing neural-network architectures, hyperparameters, and even learning the training rules. In this paper, we introduce a quantum neuroevolution algorithm that autonomously finds near-optimal quantum neural networks for different machine-learning tasks. In particular, we establish a one-to-one mapping between quantu…
With the rapid progress in quantum hardware, there has been an increased interest in new quantum algorithms to describe complex many-body systems searching for the still-elusive goal of 'useful quantum advantage'. Surprisingly, quantum algorithms for the treatment of open quantum systems (OQSs) have remained under-explored, in part due to the inherent challenges of mapping non-unitary evolution into the framework of unitary gates. Evolving an open system unitarily necessitates dilation into a new effective system to incorporate critical environmental degrees of freedom. In this context, we pre…
Relations of simulated annealing and quantum annealing are studied by a mapping from the transition matrix of classical Markovian dynamics of the Ising model to a quantum Hamiltonian and vice versa. It is shown that these two operators, the transition matrix and the Hamiltonian, share the eigenvalue spectrum. Thus, if simulated annealing with slow temperature change does not encounter a difficulty caused by an exponentially long relaxation time at a first-order phase transition, the same is true for the corresponding process of quantum annealing in the adiabatic limit. One of the important dif…
