We develop an exact framework to describe the non-Markovian dynamics of an open quantum system interacting with an environment modeled by a generalized spectral density function. The approach relies on mapping the initial system onto an auxiliary configuration, comprising the original open system coupled to a small number of discrete modes, which in turn are each coupled to an independent Markovian reservoir. Based on the connection between the discrete modes and the poles of the spectral density function, we show how expanding the system using the discrete modes allows for the full inclusion non-Markovian effects within an enlarged open system whose dynamics is governed by an exact Lindblad master equation. Initially we apply this result to obtain a generalization of the pseudomode method [B. M. Garraway, Phys. Rev. A 55, 2290 (1997)] in cases where the spectral density function has a Lorentzian structure. For many other types of spectral density function, we extend our proof to show that an open system dynamics may be modeled physically using discrete modes which admit a non-Hermitian coupling to the system, and for such cases determine the equivalent master equation to no longer be of Lindblad form. For applications involving two discrete modes, we demonstrate how to convert between pathological and Lindblad forms of the master equation using the techniques of the pseudomode method.
We study non-Markovian dynamics of a two level atom using pseudomode method. Because of the memory effect of non-Markovian dynamics, the atom receives back information and excited energy from the reservoir at a later time, which causes more complicated behaviors than Markovian dynamics. With pseudomode method, non-Markovian dynamics of the atom can be mapped into Markovian dynamics of the atom and pseudomode. We show that by using pseudomode method and quantum jump approach for Markovian dynamics, we get a physically intuitive insight into the memory effect of non-Markovian dynamics. It sugges…
The pseudomode approach is discussed with an emphasis to Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad form of this approach. The connection of the pseudomode approach with solutions of both the Friedrichs model and Jaynes-Cummings model with dissipation at zero temperature is shown. The obtained results are applied to non-Markovian phenomena description in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complexes, estimations based on experimental data are done. A deformation approach to generalization of the pseudomode approach to the finite-temperature case is discussed.
We outline a non-perturbative approach for simulating the behavior of open quantum systems interacting with a bosonic environment defined by a generalized spectral density function. The method is based on replacing the environment by a set of damped harmonic oscillators - the pseudomodes - thereby forming an enlarged open system whose dynamics is governed by a Markovian master equation. Each pseudomode is connected to one of the poles of the spectral density when analytically continued to the lower-half complex frequency plane. Here, we extend previous results to a completely generic class of …
In open system approaches with non-Markovian environments, the process of inserting an individual mode (denoted as "pseudomode") into the bath or extracting it from the bath is widely employed. This procedure, however, is typically performed on basis of the spectral density (SD) and does not incorporate temperature. Here, we show how the - temperature-dependent - bath correlation function (BCF) transforms in such a process. We present analytic formulae for the transformed BCF and numerically study the differences between factorizing initial state and global thermal (correlated) initial state o…

Quantum Darwinism extends the traditional formalism of decoherence to explain the emergence of classicality in a quantum universe. A classical description emerges when the environment tends to redundantly acquire information about the pointer states of an open system. In light of recent interest, we apply the theoretical tools of the framework to a qubit coupled with many bosonic sub-environments. We examine the degree to which the same classical information is encoded across collections of: (i) complete sub-environments, and (ii) residual "pseudomode" components of each sub-environment, the c…
We identify the conditions that guarantee equivalence of the reduced dynamics of an open quantum system (OQS) for two different types of environments - one a continuous bosonic environment leading to a unitary system-environment evolution and the other a discrete-mode bosonic environment resulting in a system-mode (non-unitary) Lindbladian evolution. Assuming initial Gaussian states for the environments, we prove that the two OQS dynamics are equivalent if both the expectation values and two-time correlation functions of the environmental interaction operators are the same at all times for the…
Understanding and simulating non-Markovian quantum dynamics remains an important challenge in open quantum system theory. A key advance in this endeavour would be to develop a unified mathematical description of non-Markovian dynamics, and classify its complexity in the many-body setting. In this paper, we identify a general class of non-Markovian memory kernels, described by complex-valued radon measures, and define their dynamics through a regularization procedure constructing the corresponding system-environment unitary groups. Building on this definition, we then consider $k-$local many-bo…
One of the fundamental issues in the field of open quantum systems is the classification and quantification of non-Markovianity. In the contest of quantity-based measures of non-Markovianity, the intuition of non-Markovianity in terms of information backflow is widely discussed. However, it is not easy to characterize the information flux for a given system state and show its connection to non-Markovianity. Here, by using the concepts from thermodynamics and information theory, we discuss a potential definition of information flux of an open quantum system, valid for static environments. We pr…
Non-Markovian open quantum systems represent the most general dynamics when the quantum system is coupled with a bath environment. The quantum dynamics arising from many important applications are non-Markovian. Although for special cases, such as Hamiltonian evolution and Lindblad evolution, quantum simulation algorithms have been extensively studied, efficient quantum simulations for the dynamics of non-Markovian open quantum systems remain underexplored. The most immediate obstacle for studying such systems is the lack of a universal succinct description of their dynamics. In this work, we …
We analyze a system coupled to a bath of independent harmonic oscillators. We transform the bath in chain structure by solving an inverse eigenvalue problem. We solve the equations of motion for the collective variables defined by this transformation, and we derive the exact dynamics for an harmonic oscillator in terms of the microscopic motion of the environmental modes. We compare this approach to the well-known Generalized Langevin Equation and we show that our dynamics satisfies this equation.

We critically evaluate the most widespread assumption in the theoretical description of coherent control strategies for open quantum systems. We show that, for non-Markovian open systems dynamics, this fixed-dissipator assumption leads to a serious pitfall causing insurmountable difficulties in the effective modelling of the controlled system. We show that the only way to avoid these problems is a full microscopic description of the controlled system in presence of noise. We illustrate our findings with a paradigmatic example.
Generic non-Markovian quantum processes have infinitely long memory, implying an exact description that grows exponentially in complexity with observation time. Here, we present a finite memory ansatz that approximates (or recovers) the true process with errors bounded by the strength of the non-Markovian memory. The introduced memory strength is an operational quantity and depends on the way the process is probed. Remarkably, the recovery error is bounded by the smallest memory strength over all possible probing methods. This allows for an unambiguous and efficient description of non-Markovia…

We consider a general open system dynamics and we provide a recursive method to derive the associated non-Markovian master equation in a perturbative series. The approach relies on a momenta expansion of the open system evolution. Unlike previous perturbative approaches of this kind, the method presented in this paper provides a recursive definition of each perturbative term. Furthermore, we give an intuitive diagrammatic description of each term of the series, which pro- vides an useful analytical tool to build them and to derive their structure in terms of commutators and anticommutators. We…
Markovian approximation is a widely-employed idea in descriptions of the dynamics of open quantum systems (OQSs). Although it is usually claimed to be a concept inspired by classical Markovianity, the term quantum Markovianity is used inconsistently and often unrigorously in the literature. In this report we compare the descriptions of classical stochastic processes and quantum stochastic processes (as arising in OQSs), and show that there are inherent differences that lead to the non-trivial problem of characterizing quantum non-Markovianity. Rather than proposing a single definition of quant…
The non-Markovianity of the stochastic process called the quantum semi-Markov (QSM) process is studied using a recently proposed quantification of memory based on the deviation from semigroup evolution, that provides a unified description of divisible and indivisible channels. This is shown to bring out the property of QSM processes to exhibit memory effects even in the CP-divisible regime, in agreement with an earlier result. An operational meaning to the non-Markovian nature of semi-Markov processes is also provided.
We solve two long standing problems for stochastic descriptions of open quantum system dynamics. First, we find the classical stochastic processes corresponding to non-Markovian quantum state diffusion and non-Markovian quantum jumps in projective Hilbert space. Second, we show that the diffusive limit of non-Markovian quantum jumps can be taken on the projective Hilbert space in such a way that it coincides with non-Markovian quantum state diffusion. However, the very same limit taken on the Hilbert space leads to a completely new diffusive unraveling, which we call non-Markovian quantum diff…
Using random matrices, we study the reduced dynamics of a two level system interacting with a generic environment. In the weak coupling limit, the result can be obtained directly from known results for purity decay, and result in Markovian dynamics. We then focus on the case of strong coupling, when the dynamics is known to be non-Markovian. In this regime, the coupling dominates over the local parts of the Hamiltonian, and thus we treat the latter as a perturbation of the former. With the help of the linear response approximation, this allows us to obtain an analytical description of the redu…
